His business manager and accountant stole the money that was meant to pay RJ’s taxes. The unpaid taxes, with penalties, apparently ended up being more than what he earned with Breaking Bad. The IRS doesn’t give a fuck and holds individual taxpayers liable all the way?

He chose not to reveal her name or launch a massive public lawsuit because she had deeply rooted ties to local law enforcement, making any legal retaliation practically impossible and financially draining.

I remember him saying he actually got no money from the show.
All his earnings went to the taxman plus more due to a lying shitbag accountant.

That’s horrifying, though his role was not terribly substantial in terms of what he might collect from royalties etc. No disrespect, just pointing out his lower relative amount of screen time

I don't get it. How hard is it to manage your own money when your income is mainly from one show?
178

When BB first came out he was 16 or 17, so he got a lot of money very early in life and likely didn't know any better and was taken advantage of.

His business manager pocketed money that was meant to pay taxes and he ended up owing the IRS more than what he made due to the interest. That's what came up in Google so there may be more details.

He got decent money. He just ended up owing the IRS back dated pay. He had to pay more than what he made on the show
There was an interview He did. Just remember him saying it was a lady that ran off with his money and she claimed she's made all payments to the tax man.
It was infuriating to watch.

I know what you mean and I resonate with your sentiment, however his condition was one where he could not play a role that didn't also have it (without lots of CGI or being a VA).
18
u/robjohnlechmere 6h ago
RJ actually said in an interview that he was playing up his symptoms for the part, particularly his speech. People with conditions like cerebral palsy or other neurological conditions will often work to minimize the appearance of those symptoms. To me it’s brave to untrain your brain of it’s masking habit, instead hamming up the disability to make the character translate better.
You are of course correct that he would not be able to play someone completely able-bodied.

His manager, Addison Witt, embezzled his money into offshore accounts. I don’t get how she’s not in prison.
6
u/senseven 7h ago
In one of his last interviews, he says that would be throwing money into a fire pit. Its was apparently complicated what exactly happened. Some speculate that there was a deal because reporters could find any record of legal proceedings. If you want your money to be managed safely, get a someone with a CPA certification that sends you quarterly reports. Anybody else can do bad things and it will be construed that you were fine with it.

To anyone else with a disability that feels like giving up, I see you, I know its hard every day, and im proud of you for doing what you can, and for forgiving yourself for what you cant
121
u/Express_Aardvark8021 7h ago
everyones co-opting his death to push their own narrative, but his financial managers embezzled and stole all his money and didn't pay or file his taxes, and all of the money he earned from breaking bad was less than what he owed in penalties and fines, and this was also done to other actors as well
16
u/Unique_Skin_4235 2h ago
I do agree that the financial manager needs repercussions and made his life worse but he made less than 500k from Breaking Bad to begin with. I think the biggest issue is him seeing his peers get roles and him being left behind and mocked by pricks in the internet. He was struggling to find acting roles and wasn't on the path of making much more money. He probably blamed his condition for this. They should've gave him residuals from the studio.
21
u/Budget-Ambassador203 6h ago
Isn't this also pushing a narrative? That happened to him right in the wake of BB, the embezzlement was occurring for 5 years and he said it took him 10 years to pay off the debt to the IRS. Surely it wasn't the only factor here, though I don't doubt something like that is incredibly distressing and psychologically damaging.
13
u/Express_Aardvark8021 4h ago

Never give up, the same support you offer others shines right back at you. You are worthwhile and you provide inspiration to others each day to people you may not even realize. ❤️

Thank you so much. The world is so harsh and life isn't easy. I wish more people would acknowledge that and try to be understanding and empathetic of the things other people go through.

I had the pleasure of meeting RJ at Comic Con one time for a photo op. I was dressed as Walter White. When it was my turn his face lit up and he shouted "Dad!" I shout back "Walt Junior!" We both had a good laugh and talked about random stuff for a bit. The world lost a genuinely good person.

I’ve lived through multiple attempts. One that had me hospitalized for 11 harrowing days.
If you are thinking of ending things, it gets better. Go get help. An emergency room will not turn you away. 988 is always available on your phone. Call them.
I’m two and a half years from my hospitalization. I have some really bad days still. But some really beautiful ones too. I live next door to my brother now and I get to see him every day. I watch dogs for extra money on rover and am petting the cutest little fat chihuahua now. I write music and am designing my first ever synthesizer VST.
It does get better. Hang in there.

Yeah, bojack horseman has a really poignant episode where his father recites “The View From Halfway Down” which inspired directly by that quote and the quotes from others.
I can say that during my crisis, there was no regret in the action. But I woke up after, and self rescued. I shouldn’t have lived.
I woke up from the attempt on April fools day and managed to self rescue. It was the best April fools joke the universe ever played on me; although it was and sometimes is still so hard to see.

The problem is defining life as “bad” or “good.” Life has wonderful moments and devastating moments, moments when you want to dance and others when you want to curl up in a ball on the floor. Life is balanced, and that it what has saved me.

Honestly, I've found the opposite sadly. It does Not get better. I was 20 when I tried to OD on pills. Failed, found a new lease on life. That faded. Found a woman, that was nice, but found myself in the same doldrums. Thought having children would fill the gaps, make the grey skies clear. After 3 kids I can tell you now more than ever I realize I was never meant for this plane of existence, except now I'm stuck here, I can't leave my kids. But in my head I hate myself day in, day out. I can not over come it. Someday it will eat me alive. But I'm ok with that. I made that decision 21 years ago, and it has been looming, over my shoulder ever since. One day it will take me, and I'm at peace with that

7
u/Warm-Management-7323 5h ago
That’s just horrible OP. I’ve had to call 988 multiple times after my wife left me. We were together for 13 years and she was my best friend and I have multiple firearms for self-defense and I had to fight and fight and fight not to use them on myself, but I won the fight so that’s a good thing. I still think about her from time to time. She was beautiful absolutely stunning in fact, but just not a very good woman inside. Very cruel for even vindictive and controlling. I guess I just fell in love with her beauty and when we first met, she was a lot of fun. We had a lot of fun together. We laughed all the time, but then her mask fell off and that was that.

When i called 988 in NYC, it was worthless. Absolute trash. Had three suicide attempts afterward. 1 moderate, 1 very serious, and one near deadly where I needed a transfusion and spent 11-14 days in a bin. I am not convinced it wasn’t worth it but things are getting better. It’s been almost 10 months. I moved back home, got divorced. Finally found a job and getting my feet on the ground.
Just surround yourself with people that understand. Not those that ignore you or put you down. Be your best self.
Now I wear my scars with honor.

While we have an exception above, most attempts are actually pretty impulsive. The impulse passes. Sometimes time with someone who cares helps that impulse pass for long enough to get help.
