My gut tells me it's fake. Never seen someone like that re-examine their mistakes or try to be accountable.

I feel that all the stories incredibly vindictive or horrible people who get what they deserve are fake. Not that there are not people like that, but in these stories people become almost cartoonishly evil.

This happened to my ex within two years of our breakup. After two and a half years together, she left me because she wanted to experience more and got with the “bad boy” at her job. She thought they were in a relationship, but he ghosted her after three months. The next guy did the same after six months. This one though she confronted at his home. He told her he never wanted a relationship and that they were just hooking up. After a string of one night stands and just being used for sex, she finally found someone who committed, only for him to leave five months later and not accept her back when she begged for him to get back together.

Two years after we broke up, she sent me a long message on Facebook, and we ended up talking on the phone. She told me all of the above during that convo. As much as I missed her and felt bad for her and still loved her, I fought the urge to rekindle anything. The person I once loved was long gone. I told her I had work in the morning and hung up on her.

She got the experience she wanted so what’s her problem?!

The problem:

The solution to nearly any problem is something that, in and of itself, is actually an entirely different problem.

Relationships are more of this. You don't choose solutions that make you right. You choose problems you want to share with someone.

This just happened to my friend.

He met a woman at work and really liked her. She already had three kids, but the father of her kids wasn't in the picture. She would constantly tell my friend that he treated better than anyone had ever treated her.

They dated for a little over a year before she broke up with him to start dating a "bad boy" who had a horrible reputation (they all worked together). He accepted it, wished her all the best. My friend eventually left that company and they lost touch.

This happened 2 years ago.

Just last week, she unblocked him from ig and added him again. He accepted. Her profile was full of posts about how unhappy she was with the "bad boy." They had a kid a year ago and she was now pregnant again. Bad boy is unemployed. All her posts are about how he does nothing, isn't supportive, disappears for days at a time, how much they fight, etc.

She sent my friend a long message telling my friend how much she missed him and they texted for a few hours, but my friend told her it would be best if they remained NC.

funny how "experience more" is always hopping on new dicks and not taking up paragliding or diving lessons for example.

106

u/kuavi 2d ago

Which ironically would probably help them learn to enjoy life more and be a better partner if they picked up a hobby or two.

When is told my partner i wanted to experience more we swam with sharks. Plenty of ways to get a thrill than a good snoo-snoo shesh

26

u/OutragedPineapple 2d ago

I seriously don't get this. I've never had remotely any desire to go hopping on different guys.

What I DO want to do is see different places, try different foods and experience new cultures! Visit Norway, go see the Highland Games in Scotland, see Irish step dancers in person, ride a burro through the Grand Canyon, things like that! Things that would be even better with experienced with someone you know and trust, not someone you've maybe known for a week and already banged!

6

u/Beautiful-Swimmer339 1d ago

It's often not about the sex itself, it's about getting a bunch of different exciting experiences altogether that would have been much harder to get by herself/themselves.

I have rented out rooms in a property to mainly young people since my teens now so I have seen many hundreds of people make different choices up close and I can tell you that a average young woman has the option to experience alot of the world "through" different guys.

For example one of my renters many years ago now was barely able to pay rent because of her low hours/pay from her job.

She also had a depression so going out to much and being too active didn't really seem to be an option.

But she still had one guy Weekly come over and cook for her and bring her food (as well as take care of her dishes and clean the shared kitchen) one guy that took her to travels throughout Europe, one guy who took her to motor festivals and car shows and one guy who got her invited to parties got her alcohol and one guy who got her behind the scenes at different zoos and visiting exotic animal collections.

So even despite her low energy and income she was able to experience a ton of cool things that would have just been of the table without engaging with men or if she was in a stable relationship unless her guy was rich.

She was essentially dipping her finger in many pots at the same time and many guys are definitely okay spending money/time/resources/contacts on a woman they are seeing even just on the downlow

My ex left and kept asking for news for 12 years. Usually every time she broke up with some guy.

Im pretty sure she regretted deeply leaving me and the nice life she had in Paris, but never once did she say so.

Our conversations always ended the same way, by her telling me how terrible of a man I was and she made the right choice x years ago.

So I understand the spirit of the post, but I don’t believe someone making such a life breaking mistake would have enough self reflection or courage to say it out loud or even quietly to themselves.

35

u/excellent_p 2d ago

It sounded like she was talking with you to get the ego boost of dumping you again (even though you weren't dating) to feel better about herself when she was feeling low.

13

u/StarlightSurfing 2d ago

Why the hell are you keeping up with an ex whom you aren't on good terms with or have no platonic intentions with?

14

u/No-Archer-4713 2d ago

Petty revenge. I’m always very friendly but I let her know how good I have it since she left.

I should be thankful tbh, it was probably the best thing that could happen to me.

But there’s one thing I can’t forgive, that’s how many times she called me a loser, to the point I almost believed it.

Getting caught up in an affair, blowing up your relationship, and the affair fizzling is not all that uncommon of an outcome.

Her age and situation would also fit the time for life reflection.. she needs to get moving to have a couple of kids.

9

u/notarealcamera 2d ago

In what way is OOP cartoonishly evil, though?

7

u/TechnicalNobody 2d ago

They're not. Their actions aren't unrealistic, it's more their self awareness that is.

32

u/timekiller2222 2d ago

Paying attention to American politics at all? Cartoonishly evil would be an understatement.

8

u/KaiTheFilmGuy 2d ago

I think people who make bad choices kind of have a tendency to keep making bad choices. It's not them "becoming evil" it's usually just the person writing the story not giving them any grace anymore.

34

u/HenryDorsettCase47 2d ago

Yeah. Most of the time they either get away with by going on to live an undeserved happy life or by being incapable of self reflection and attributing all their woes to other people rather than their own personal choices.

Most shit you read on Reddit is fake. People exaggerate or make up stories in real life all the time so of course they’re going to even more when it’s anonymous on the internet.

8

u/SahiroHere 2d ago

Humans are very good at lying to theirselves. But I also think most people have occasional moments of clarity. Facing the truth is WAY too scary, though. So they decide to quickly flee into their flimsy lies again.

14

u/thestrong45playz 2d ago

Most of the time people who do anything they're not supposed to do only do it because it doesn't register as that substantial in their mind

But that's mostly for repeated offenders so I don't know how much it applies

Never seen someone like that re-examine their mistakes or try to be accountable.

It's rare to even see someone like that actually end up accountable.

The truth is - absolutely awful people who do awful things go on to be successful and live wonderful and fulfilling lives - while those who you'd empathize with, will go on to suffer immensely and will fail catastrophically in life.

I imagine the story of cheating on her fiance, then proceeding to be perfectly happy in her life, while her ex-fiance drank himself to death wouldn't get nearly as many up-votes.

I have. I have been in a similar situation. Broke up with the girl i dated shortly out of high school, such a sweet and kind person who loved me to death. Broke up with her because I thought I wanted to go meet other women, it was the first good long term relationship I had been in. Realized how much I needed her in my life, but when I went to ask to meet and talk, she told me she found someone.

6 years later and i've dated countless women. Most just want sex. I've met one that struck me as genuinely kind and good and thatI could see a future with. She hadn't dated since high school and didn't think she could do a relationship.

Meanwhile my ex has a kid and is living the life I now daydream about sharing with her.

It happens. Sometimes people mess things up and realize they lost the best thing that had ever happened to them.

Regardless of the authenticity of this post, why is everyone here under the belief that someone who cheated is incapable of self reflection and change?

A lot of people are suprisingly self reflective and self aware even if they continue to repeat the same behavioral patterns at different periods in their life.

22

u/AidanL03 2d ago

Fundamentally, acts of deception are far harder to forgive because it proves beyond doubt that it’s in your nature to lie, and plenty of people know the feeling of being cheated on/lied to/etc. and then were awkwardly begged for a second chance only for them to do it again because, well you cant trust them.

Cheating doesn’t just happen on a whim, we don’t think about it but there are several steps involved from finding partners to arranging the events, all of which demonstrate intent plus you have to consider the entire time they’re not telling their partner their true feelings, thats probably at least weeks/months maybe even years of deception about how they feel, what they want from the relationship, what their goals with you are and etc.

Sure they CAN change but fundamentally if you’re that comfortable with deception people are not going to give you the benefit of the doubt, nor should they.

17

u/Derpimus_J 2d ago

Because the possibility of that happening is very slim in real life. Especially narcissists, since they never self reflect.

13

u/No_Celebration_3737 2d ago edited 2d ago

Because 99% of the time the ones who cheat aren't capable of it.

They being capable of compartmentalize their cheating and their relationship is how they can cheat in the first place.

10

u/Low_Map346 2d ago

I think there has to be some shame if you are actually reflecting on a wrong you committed and want to change. The story in the OP seems to be only self pity and no shame.

5

u/RedditDummyAccount 2d ago

This. That person doesn’t appear to regret the actual act of cheating but rather that their life didn’t turn out as good as they wanted, which they had a chance at but ruined 3 months before the wedding

3

u/The_walking_man_ 2d ago

Correct. Definitely fake. Showing too much remorse and self awareness. The wording feels off too.

These people throw pity parties for themselves and rant about why they can’t have that. It was only a one night stand before the wedding!? What’s wrong with that??

3

u/wildmoonrising 2d ago

It’s totally fake. It kinda wraps up too perfectly. Somehow the person who was cheated on fully recovers quickly and has a happily ever after, while the cheater forever has a life in shambles.

There’s definitely aspects of these things that do happen but they’re not some TV movie where all the storylines add up and resolve.

Friend of mine never got engaged, but had it so much worse than this.

Super nice guy, but he never had many girlfriends. Had a steady girlfriend though college but she broke up with him because he started neglecting her for his friends and videogames.

A few years after college he started hooking up with a girl he met at a local bar. He told us he met someone and was very proud that she was "great in bed". She moved in with him not long after and they started "dating" (we said he was crazy to have her move in so fast but he didn't care). He introduced all his friends and family to her. She was nice enough, but always gave me bad vibes. Like when I met her for the first time she gave me a full on hug and held on just a little too long. She was weird, and not overly attractive (we felt he could do better) but he was happy and we were happy for him.

After a year or so he started talking about proposing. He was watching family and friends all move on with life getting married, having kids, etc. so he was getting the bug.

Eventually he caught her at the same bar he met her at flirting with another guy. She swore it was just in good fun, and she would never cheat on him. After a long talk she admitted to him that she had slept with over 70 guys total, before and after meeting him, and was "addicted to sex".

He broke up with her not long after that. Sold his house and moved to a different city. Bought a new house, got a new job, and moved on with his life. Pretty quickly he was doing well in every department but love. He just couldn't find anyone. But he was still the same dude we always knew and he seemed happy. He got a dog and focused on other parts of his life.

5 or so years later he was diagnosed with cancer. The doctors did tests and determined it was the cancer you get from HPV. Given his history with women and sex, he was convinced it was from the girl who had slept with over 70 dudes (and if we were being honest we all thought so too). He admitted to not using a condom with her repeatedly. He wasn't shy about the details of his life and used to talk about it with us regularly with regret.

And thus began his 5 year battle with cancer. Multiple rounds of chemo, radiation, and pain. He lost his hair, lost so much weight he looked like a different person, his teeth started eroding and eventually fell out. He had to get a tube inserted in his chest because he couldn't eat anymore from the radiation causing damage to his esophagus. Every time he went into remission it would come back 6 months later. He had surgeries to remove tumors and skin grafts to repair the areas they cut out, but it kept coming back.

But he somehow kept positive. You'd never know talking to him on the phone that anything was wrong, other than the change in his voice all his friends and family noticed due to the surgeries and damage to his throat.

Shortly after his last round of chemo ended a few winters ago he got COVID. Wound up in the hospital. We were all scared to death because his body was already weak from the chemo. After a week or so in the ICU he was released to go back home. He called me to let me know he was out, said he felt pretty good. I told him I was glad and that I hoped we could get together soon. He said he had an appointment to get his teeth fixed soon. He was so positive and sounded happy to be out of the hospital.

By the next morning he was gone. Passed away in his sleep. His mom had come up to take care of him and she found him in his bed. His body finally gave up.

Regardless of whether the story OP posted is made up or not, please make sure to take the time to actually learn about your partners before falling so hard that not using protection, engagement, marriage, or kids come into play. I hear so often about people getting hitched after 6 months or less... I'm sorry but you don't know that person at all after 6 months. Even longer than that sometimes people don't really know the people they are with until it's too late.

Of course there are examples where people meet at a bar and are married by the next day and it works out... but more often than not people who get married and start lives together without really ever knowing the other person regret it. Take my friends story as a warning against moving too fast and being focused on the physical aspects of a relationship too much. Learn who you are with, get to know and love them for who they are and not what they do to you physically. Get to know their friends and family and once you have a complete picture move forward.

Peace and love to you and yours.

By the next morning he was gone.

This appears to be incredibly common with people who are about to die. They feel great just a day or so before the end.

135

u/KoburaCape 2d ago

It's because the body stops spending its energy trying to recover. This is a well-documented phenomenon.

25

u/dan_dares 1d ago

Less so with metastatic cancers, more so with other disorders.

Cancers are normally putting pressure on areas that cause immense pain, the Terminal lucidity before death doesn't counter this.

Cancer deaths are miserable.

Also please go and get the HPV vaccine, male or female if you haven't. I went back and got it after it became available for men, one partner or many, doesn't really matter. Why take the risk? It may not work in all cases but a simple thing can save lives. HPV can cause numerous cancers, and is not a joke.

3

u/fullblossom7672 1d ago

I did a social marketing campaign about cervical cancer awareness catered towards mostly women back when I was in college, and there was also a free ongoing vaccination campaign to go with it. It had the opposite effect, because mostly men came to get vaccinated... But I felt proud nevertheless because I felt like I did my part in preventing atleast a small percentage of HPV amongst my college peers.

This is heartbreaking, I decided it years ago but this strengthens my resolve to always use a condom/ask about STDs.

29

u/Healthy-Dimension485 2d ago

It is important that you know that the condom does not protect against HPV, nor the cancer causing strains of HPV. The condom does not cover the entire area thru which a virus can be transmitted, which is why the HPV vaccine was invented. The ONLY reliable way of not getting the HPV, aside from abstinence is the vaccine.

7

u/Prinnykin 2d ago

I always thought the same, but I still got screwed over.

My ex lied to me about having herpes, so now I have this shit for life.

I also got chlamydia when I was in a serious long term relationship. You cannot trust anyone.

13

u/Chukwura111 2d ago

What cancer is this that you describe?

40

u/yeetedhaws 2d ago edited 2d ago

Men can get throat or penile (or anal but im assuming not in the above scenario) from hpv. Its uncommon, takes 5-20 years to develope, and also means ops friend never did an sti screen for hpv. It can be easily treated before it becomes cancerous.

Eta because people are asking: orarisk for hpv can reliable test for hpv dna in the mouth (meaning it can be used for men), anal smears help with anal hpv, and penile samples can be taken but are a bit unreliable because of how thick glans skin is. There are tests for men but hpv is carried by 90% of men and is considered low risk so generally if someone is asymptomatic most practitioners skip testing.

9

u/jimlahey420 2d ago

My understanding is that men can't be screened for HPV. Maybe that's changed more recently? But back when he was diagnosed he was only diagnosed because he was having pain when swallowing food. They found lesions in his throat and the stage 3 cancer.

It's the same cancer Michael Douglas got.

There is a vaccine for cancer causing strains of HPV that women AND men can take. Please, take it. You do not deserve to die just because your partner used to sleep eith someone else. You do not deserve to die just for having sex.

It is funny to think about it when ur young, but ain shit funny once the virus develops the cancer. Ive witnessed the radiation therapy and treatment of a woman with a cervical cancer and it is such an uncomfortable, painful and dreadful process. She said she regrets not taking the vaccine when she was younger, and urged me to take one if i didnt.

This sounds like the wet dream of someone who was cheated on.

What more often ends up happening is that the cheater continues living their life the way they always have and the one who was cheated on is the one who has to heal and overcome the trauma of what happened.

The majority of cheaters live their whole life throwing away good things for short term gratification. Rarely do they have the self awareness and more importantly the self control to understand where they went wrong and prevent it from happening again.

28

It’s fucking sad man.  My ex-wife was a huge Internet celebrity, I was never part of her public persona, she ended up having a big affair with another YouTuber, and the other guy doesn’t even know she was ever married.  None of her fans know.  She got to go directly from cheating on me to living this glamorous life while I was left behind devastated, and what’s worse is that if her partner or her fans ever find out… well I’m not really looking forward to being doxxed and misrepresented by rabbid Internet vegans.  She’ll just go on her channel and lie and I am not about to try to do some public bullshit fight.

They have a relationship advice podcast now

Bad people cheat. Good people get cheated on. Good people will naturally attract good people until they find the right good person for them.

If you are a stable, put together individual, this scenario in the OP is the most likely outcome. Because people like this don't drown in a hole somewhere after being cheated on. They have some level of self respect, and tend to have more to offer than just being one half of a relationship

24

u/MimeSweeper360 2d ago

This is so true. I was cheated on. It hurt for a while but a few months after we broke up I met my now wife.

11

u/Sad-Roll-Nat1-2024 2d ago

Same. Was with someone for longer than I'd like to admit. Found out after being with her for 2years that she'd been cheating on me the whole time. Amongst other things.

After a while I was finally able to leave. Moved in with my parents to get my feet under me (4 states away). Met my now wife at my first job I got.

Married, 2 kids. Both work. In our own place (not a house yet, an apartment).

Every now and then my ex will show up on my "people you may know". I'll look, and it's literally the same, just a different guy every 6 months to a year. Still cheating. Still doing other stuff. And blasting it on the internet for all to see.

Glad I'm happy now and she's just as miserable as before.

I agree with your point, so what’s the issue you take with mine?

Sometimes people want this kind of vindication for being cheated on, that the cheaters life fell apart and they realize that you were the prize all along, but you often don’t get it. Often the cheater goes on living their life happily the way they always have. The good people they hurt along the way are the ones who suffer.

Ultimately the cheaters life is a miserable one. Good people understand that. Cheaters often don’t.

When I was in my early 20s I was seeing this girl that was pregnant with a dude's kid that was in jail for beating the shit out of her. I didn't know she was pregnant until about a month in. She was terrified of him getting out of jail, she testified against him even... I'm there for the birth of her child, I played dad for about 4 months. Then the second he gets out of jail she cheats on me with him. She tells me its best for the baby if she gives her real dad a shot and they're all better off that way. At this point I don't even care, I didn't sign up to be a dad but I was ready to do it.

Fast forward 3 months. I'm reading the paper and the headline reads something like "Diaper dealing mom drives with tot  and pot." It's her. She was caught driving high on Marijuana with multiple dime bags of weed stashed inside her diaper bag and the baby in the back. Back when people cared about weed being schedule 1. Supposedly she told the cops her boyfriend put them there and she was going to sell them. The worst part? She was pregnant with his second kid during this interaction.

Never felt so vindicated in my life. Ya, those kids are definitely going to live a better life without me. My life since hasn't been all sunshine and rainbows but I dodged a fucking bullet there.

u/TrandaBear 2d ago

Yeah these people keep feeding the negative wolf inside them and wonder why positive things dont magically happen.

19

u/_Edgarallenhoe 2d ago

Honestly this is exactly why I somewhat look down on people who cling onto the idea of people who have wronged them suffering as some form of karma. More often than not, people who have hurt you are not going to suffer a dismal and horrible life and if your own peace hinges on that, you aren’t doing yourself any favours.

So many people today seem to think there will be a never ending supply of great partners to come along. I am not a believer in "the one" but finding people who are a great fit isn't easy. And as someone who is older, I can assure you it gets exponentially harder as you age. Screwing up a good relationship to "experience more" can be a huge mistake.

59

u/NairbZaid10 2d ago

Fake af. Too dramatic and too much accountability from a cheater to be true

11

u/figosnypes 2d ago

This is what I was thinking. Cheaters always see themselves as the victim and the person they cheated on as the villain.

This is kind of like an ex-gf of mine. Who, after she dumped me to date another guy, got pregnant by him immediately, but they didn't last more than 6 months. FF to now, and she has three kids from three different men, and remarried her third husband. I'm honestly not keeping tabs on her, but she's FB friends with my SIL (brothers wife), and apparently still posts all her drama there.

17

u/NB-Heathen 2d ago

She wished to experience more. She got what she wanted just not the way she envisioned it. Should have specified she wanted good experiences I guess 🤷‍♂️

Prob fake but I don’t understand why so many people want to “experience more” or “live more” before settling down, and why 9/10 its just having sex with a bunch of people.

5

u/senseven 2d ago

Some relationship studies explained that many people have an irrational expectation of life. Every single thing you do in the relationship has to have some sort of vibe, be an "experience" or something you need to look forward to. Which is close to impossible to archive if you are not travelling with a circus. Those people are dependent on dopamine expectation loops. Even if the story is fake, those kind of people rarely change their colors. They keep doing what they are doing because the other path is just "boring".

u/plzicannothandleyou 2d ago

I can answer for you to calm your mind.

It happens when someone takes a screenshot or downloads someone else’s post to repost it themselves elsewhere.

A lot of subreddits have repost detection that will delete reposts, so you have to alter the image.

With text, you can’t flip the image, obviously. So you tilt the image.

This beats repost detection as well as causing a myriad of engagement just like yours. As well as people like me who explain to people like you who wonder how it got tilted. That makes the engagement usually much higher than the original post.

If you want to ask why people repost stuff, well, everyone on the internet has wondered that since the creation of the Internet.

I went through a similar scenario, only we were two months from the wedding and I found a journal chronicling her exploits with over thirty different men.

12

u/MilwaukeeMan420 2d ago

How does one find time to cheat with 30 different people while in a committed relationship?

We live together and each work 40+ hours a week. If she began cheating with even one person, her behavior would appear to change drastically. Did you two spend a lot of time apart?

I am really sorry that happend to you, that is awful. I am not doubting or shaming you. Just that 30 is insane number and I have questions.

15

u/CokBlockinWinger 2d ago

Over a ten year relationship. Part of that she was away at college. Also she was a master of manipulation and the fact unraveling that happened in the weeks afterwards would make a trash novel author blush.

Met my ex through facebook group. She flew over to meet me. Few months later i moved to other city to be with her. Year later, she called it off so she can go meet guy WHO travel. Btw she has 2 little kids. I have no kids. He has no kids. Well I would say he has good job. Has money when I wasn’t. So i ghosted her. Moved to other city. Sold my truck with shell. Brought me van within week. Traveling. Work evenings. Travel during mornings afternoon on day offs. It was simple. I enjoy that. Transfer to other states with same job. It was so simple. 5 years later. Debt paid off. I have money. Sometimes i would find myself wondering how she’s been doing then thought well im better off anyway. Im good. Debt free. Have money to do whatever i want.

I never forget her face when she discovered that im already in other state while she’s trying to FaceTime me. Figured to see what she wants. “You’re at Arizona?… oh….” And she was still in her same apartment.

You can think she’s bad person or something but to me. Nah. I aint mad at her at all. I was struck on job i don’t like till i quit and move to be with her then ghosted her. I end up met lot cool people while traveling. Saw many beautiful places.

Too easy to get options and replacements, she doesn't know the value of what she has/had.

I went through a similar thing for a period in my life, exceedingly successful (for a regular guy) with the ladies. Met like 2 solid potential life matches and a 3rd that would have been fiery romance (but would end in divorce, I'm sure). I was just too dumb and unknowledgeable to realize what was important at the time.

I make a point to learn from mistakes these days. One might say I've learned VERY much. (subtext: because I fucked up a lot). But I'm happy to report that I'm no longer that person I was.

Can't say everyone will learn from mistakes, but if you can, try. Future self will thank you!

When I recognized my own selfish and narcissistic qualities, and decided to be cognizant of the perspectives of others, I inadvertently became a much happier, more satisfied person. Scheming for oneself is a destroyer of karma.

Cheating is like the Dark Side of the Force. It's the quick and easy path to short term satisfaction but once you go down it, forever it dominates your destiny.

20

u/DavidNelsonNews 2d ago

Assuming this is a legitimate post, which is doubtful, she would never have achieved the happy life with him that she fantasize about because she wasn’t the kind of person who could create, maintain, and commit to that. It starts with who you are, your identity. That is what influences your choices and therefore your consequences. She needs to work on who she is, not any given decision that was or was not made. She’s getting the cart before the horse. The poor decisions that she continued to make after he left make this clear.

A lot of people will say "I don't want to commit or settle down because I don't want to miss out on experiences and other people" but that inherently means you miss out on experiencing a long, stable relationship with a partner you can grow and build with. Everything has an opportunity cost. No open door doesn't close another.
