Work gave them a few weeks off after birth, what more did you want?

1 in 4 women in the United States return to work within 2 weeks of giving birth. 2/3 within 3 months.

I’m three weeks postpartum, not from the US and could not fathom going back to work now let alone a week ago. I haven’t even stopped bleeding yet. WTAF

u/rcknmrty4evr Sep 05 '26

It’s fucking horrific. I had postpartum bleeding for weeks and weeks after giving birth. I was peeing myself, bleeding, in diapers for so long bc I pushed for 5~ hours. I cannot FATHOM going to work, leaving my baby, in that condition. Yet so many of my fellow American women are forced to every single day.

I will die on the hill that separating a mother and baby before they’re ready is a human rights violation.

I spent a few months as Director of Nursing at a nursing home. One of my CNAs came back to work a week after giving birth. Her husband had been laid off and they needed the money for food and rent. It was that or homelessness.

I was grateful for 10 weeks then cried for a few months every day in the car on my way to work before I accepted my reality. It's a fucking joke.

I thought y'all wanted equality?

u/Cal-Capone Sep 04 '26
  1. Men and women should both get more than 10 weeks off for a baby (poorer countries than the US seem to manage this)
  2. Equality doesn't exactly apply to a situation where only one person in the couple has physically birthed a person.
  3. You actually can do shared parental leave schemes that make the process pretty damn equal. This process is of course complicated by breastfeeding if that is the chosen method to feed the baby, but there are ways to manage this if wanting to give the father some time to look after the baby.

Yep! That's why we believe dads deserve the same amount of parental leave that mothers are fighting for🙂

17

u/Maximum-Class5465 Sep 04 '26

My job didn't give me as much pay, but I gladly took parental leave when my children were born.

It was great honestly

6

u/TFABulous337 Sep 04 '26

This was job protected medical leave, covered under FMLA. Not paid parental leave. And yes, I would love for all parents to have reasonable leave, obviously, since I'm not a psychopath. 😊

Equity. Laws that treat everyone fairly so that the outcome is similar. Women needs more time off from birth. But also both sbould get way more time to raise an infant. As always capitalism is the problem.

-15

u/Rybocephus Sep 04 '26

Lol y'all think that people who choose not to work as hard or as often should get the same pay and benefits. That dog just don't hunt.

8

u/not_a_moogle Sep 04 '26

Uh, yes. I hate capitalism. Work should not be a requirement to keep living

-11

u/Rybocephus Sep 04 '26

Do you not realize that communist systems starved and worked their populations to death by design? Sociopolitical ideologies and economic systems are not the problem. People are the problem. I'm obviously wasting my time here but whatever

11

u/nobearpineapples Sep 05 '26

Why do people act like it’s one or the other? Were not bound by two systems made by the dead

8

u/not_a_moogle Sep 05 '26 edited Sep 05 '26

Who said anything about communism? The population surge weve had in the last 100 years thanks to better advancements in Healthcare and technology means its much easier for people to live longer and survive from smaller health issues.

Capitalism is not compatible with this. Theres way too many people unable or too old to work.

A social safety net needs to be started by the government. And you can not exclude people from thay system just because.

Society needs an overhaul, and paying people to be parents or caregivers for the elderly is a good start. Let them contribute to humanity in a wayb thats not just creating value from their labor.

Other countries give much longer times off for child birth to bith parents. Why cant we?

1

u/Rybocephus Sep 05 '26

You can choose to believe that welfare programs and societal aid does not exist if you like. You can also choose to believe that capitalism is the source of all societal problems. I have neither the time, energy nor inclination to discuss this any further.

Haha, literally no one said shit about communism. Something tells me you have no idea how much you just outed yourself. This convo is way over your head buddy.

2

u/ieatpossums Sep 05 '26

The reason people don’t get adequate maternity leave isn’t because people aren’t working as hard or often genius. Even if it was- it doesn’t matter what you do- everyone deserves the same maternity leave. Should we give slackers less FMLA as a punishment if they get cancer? Same concept.

2

u/rcknmrty4evr Sep 05 '26

Right so every other developed nation, and many developing nations, figuring out parental leave while America is too inept and incompetent to do the same is a good thing lmao okay champ whatever affirms your algorithmically formed biases

3

u/SwiftSakura_13 Sep 05 '26

“Equality” when only one party is actually carrying the baby to term and breastfeeding lmao

-1

u/Crystalcrey Sep 05 '26

You know breastfedding isn't essentiel right? And what about the father that need to support the mother? Making and raising a baby is a 2 people job.

5

u/rcknmrty4evr Sep 05 '26

My husband got 5 days off of work after we had our son. What in my comment makes you believe I’m okay with that?

4

u/PolicyWonka Sep 04 '26

That’s why both parents should receive at least 6 months of parental leave.

6

u/Twiggle71489 Sep 05 '26

I went back at 3 weeks while my husband got 12 weeks of paternity, 10 of which he spent getting high, cheating, and whining to his mommy that his wife didn’t pay attention to him. (Yes he my ex now)

Something’s gotta change, I just don’t know what.

5

u/TarantulaWithAGuitar Sep 05 '26

I used to work with a lady who was fired for not coming in to work her shift the day after she went into surprise labor a few weeks early and had her kid, because she "didn't give enough notice" of her absence.

4

u/MeltedChocolateOk Sep 06 '26

That's actually a lawsuit there.

6

u/3sorym4 Sep 05 '26

Holy shit. I’ve never seen that statistic. That’s more horrifying than I thought.

I was so anemic at 2wks postpartum still. I would not physically have been able to make the walk from the parking lot to my office at that point.

Mitch McConnell has been getting the best healthcare (our) money could buy for 3 months. Her insurance company pressured her out of care after less than 5 full days.

11

u/Alternative-Car-1896 Sep 05 '26

And some people wonder why others get violent at those who pressure and deny.

6

u/Fonzee327 Sep 05 '26

There is no way Mitch McConnell is alive, I guess possibly in some sort of nonfunctioning state

3

u/katieb1300 Sep 05 '26

In any other administration, this would be a huge conspiracy and would be investigated. The news wouldn't stop talking about his whereabouts (or lack thereof) and people would probably go to prison for lying about his condition and collecting benefits until his retirement.

In. Any. Other. Administration.

2

u/TeeFry2 Sep 06 '26

His cadaver gas been getting free healthcare. AND his family is still getting his paychecks.

82

u/a_hockey_chick Sep 04 '26

No no...this is the US Best we can offer is a few days.

45

u/Tjep2k Sep 04 '26

Unless your a member of congress! Then you get paid time off.

27

u/TootsieLuuuuu Sep 04 '26

Even if you're dead!

31

u/Super_Pan Sep 04 '26

Eternity leave.

35

u/asfrels Sep 04 '26

Unpaid

3

u/brokenwing2023 Sep 04 '26

That guy from Florida said moms should be back to work in two days. Otherwise they get lazy.

12

u/bangobingoo Sep 04 '26

And you might get demoted cause you’re a mum now and you might care about your kid more than work.

4

u/skrulewi Sep 04 '26

Have you tried killing the poor?

3

u/Sancticide Sep 04 '26

Can you just work on your laptop while you push or something?

3

u/corybomb Sep 04 '26

I'm just going to comment to let others know that despite all the anti-USA sentiment across this website, my wife gets 6 month maternity leave and I as a male get 2 months. Its not always shit.

2

u/FoxxieMoxxie69 Sep 05 '26

That’s because your job chooses that. It’s OPTIONAL. It’s not mandatory. Other countries have longer leaves mandated, and they actually provide support to moms after giving birth, while still earning their income.

2

u/corybomb Sep 05 '26

I understand it’s optional. We also have FMLA and states that where that offer mandatory paid leave. My point is that Reddit is so polarizing that only the most negative views of the US rise to the top of comments.

2

u/FoxxieMoxxie69 Sep 05 '26

The point is this treatment in the US isn’t universal. So the majority of Americans aren’t getting proper care or an equal amount of time off. FMLA is a bandaid solution and is still nothing close to what other governments mandate for the entire population.

1

u/BeepBopBippityBop Sep 04 '26

Please can you kindly tell me you are joking.

11

u/iamafriscogiant Sep 04 '26

If you can't work and raise your kids while I barely work and never see my kids, what value in society do you actually have?

3

u/Opetyr Sep 04 '26

Nah as the orange turd states. Americans don't want or need holidays so why would they been allowed leave of any sort.

1

u/benice_orgohome13 Sep 04 '26

It’s insane to have off for only 6 week

1

u/Dangerous-Tax-4689 Sep 05 '26

It was a vacation. Damn! I wish I could go on ‘maternity leave’. /s

-1

u/Obiwan-Kenhomie Sep 04 '26

We're blaming her not getting enough maternity leave for her killing her kids now lol? If anything if she was that bad she needed to be away from the kids not with them more
