There’s a guy in front of Whole Foods on upper state collecting signatures. He claims this is for rent control only but he’s lying. Whatever he has people sign includes opening up state Street to traffic.

Tourism Surf rental on beach

Hey there! Italian visiting here.

Am currently in the SB area, and would like to try surfing. I have a rental car that does not allow to fit boards in it, and would like to find a place to get a rental directly at (or or walking distance from) the beach in the area.

Looking for a soft board for beginners, and also a beach that allows for beginner surfing. I read a lot about Mondo’s beach but there I can only find surf schools, no rentals without lessons (which I honestly cannot really afford). Would anyone have suggestions on rental + beginner friendly wave close by (visiting tomorrow).

Thanks!!

Local Politics Every Nurse Will Benefit When Cottage Hospital Nurses Are Unionized!

I have been a nurse for many years at various hospitals throughout the country, including Cottage Hospital. Some nurses are just starting their careers, others have worked only at Cottage Hospital, and some are nearing the end of their careers. Some of you came here as travellers, fell in love with our beautiful little city, and decided to call Santa Barbara home. Of course, some of you have worked in other places around the state or country, and now you work for Cottage Health Systems. We all have our own story about how we ended up working at Cottage Hospital.

But now we have to be honest. Cottage Health Systems is the only hospital in Santa Barbara that serves Santa Barbara and the neighboring towns. Although the hospital is designated as "non-profit," it makes a lot of money. Just the facts! The CEO, CFO, and other top administrators are paid handsome salaries, bonuses, and perks. You can check this by looking up 990 tax records for the administrators.

Nurses' salaries and benefits at Cottage Health System have never been aligned with the cost of living in this area because nurses are "At-Will" employees VS. "Just Cause" employees. This means nurses must accept what the employer is willing to give them and have no say when the hospital decides to take something away from nurses (which happens more than the public knows). When nurses try to take control of how they're treated through union organizing, administration tries to stop the union by hiring a union-buster. They can use fear, intimidation, and confusion to get nurses to vote "NO" against the union, but only benefits the hospital. The administration doesn't want to lose power over the nursing staff because this means the nurses will have a voice! A contract means the hospital will be accountable for its missteps. If a manager forces mandatory overtime on nursing staff, nurses can speak up without fear of retaliation. If they're short-staffed, then these issues can be addressed without fear of retaliation; the same is true for nurses missing meal breaks. People don't go into nursing because they're looking for an easy job! Hospital nursing is hard work. When nurses call a union, it's because their work environment has become unsafe and unbearable, and nurses can't take it anymore. This is the situation at Cottage Health Systems. But here's the thing: it's not awful on every unit at every facility, but awful on so many units at each facility that it has reached epidemic proportions, and it's a major safety issue for patients and nurses.

If your unit is doing fine now, and you have a manager who treats you like a human being, then that is wonderful. But if administration gives your manager a directive to change the dynamics of your unit or administration decreases your benefits or salary, your manager can't help you. If you have union representation, you have a contract that you (the nurses) have created to meet your needs so you can safely and effectively care for your patients. The nurses are the union! Don't listen to all the ridiculous noise and comments that will be posted in the chat after this post; it's just that, NOISE. When someone says something that sounds off or misleading at work, like unions just want to take your money. Stop and ask yourself: does what they're saying sound logical, or is that person/manager/administrator trying to scare me into voting "NO"? If you vote "YES," then you gain power and administration loses power! I think of a union as an organization providing a service for me. I pay the electric company to run electrical lines to my home, so I have power in my home. I pay the gas company every month so I can cook and heat my home. If I pay monthly dues to a union, I'm paying for the union to enforce the legally binding contract my fellow nurses and I have created to meet our needs. This contract includes, but is not limited to: patient safety, enforcement of nurse-patient ratio laws, PTO, sick leave, health benefits, retirement benefits, and transportation/parking, which is an issue at Cottage. Salaries will be negotiated, including base pay scales, step increases tied to years of experience, shift differential (night, weekend, & holiday pay), and certification and education bonuses. Grievance and arbitration provide a formal, legally binding process to challenge unfair discipline, contract violations, or unsafe working conditions. All of these matters enable us to work safely and provide for ourselves and our families. A contract helps us plan for retirement and hopefully save a little money for a vacation or handle an emergency because, as we all know, life is not always predictable. The Hospital Administration signs contracts before accepting positions at Cottage Health Systems, so why shouldn't nurses have a contract as well?

IN SOLIDARITY NURSE!

On Saturday I road my bike on an out and back on the Buckhorn fire road from Lower Oso to almost Big Pine mountain. Here are some photos I took along the route!

The mountain lion paw track was on top of my outbound tire tracks that I made just a few hours before.

Recommendations Any bars to watch hockey in town?

I saw this asked a few years ago and the answer was ‘not really’, but I wanted to see if anything has changed. Is there any place fans gather?

I know I can ask for it to be put on at loads of spots, but I can watch it at home. I’m looking for the social aspect… fairly new fan here and it’s more fun to watch with friends.

Thanks!

Local Politics Montecito Sanitary District gray water project?

I heard there is a proposal to rebuild the water treatment plant so it will produce gray water, at a cost of $250 million. And that the current board includes employees of the district who are going to advance this plan over a $25million alternative that would connect to the Santa Barbara water treatment plant because the latter option would eliminate their jobs.
This seems like it should be a front page story with lawsuits etc. Anyone have a clue?

Are you a nurse at Cottage who is interested in learning more about unionizing? Are you a community member supportive of labor rights and increasing the bargaining power of our local nurses?

Come on down to Lama Dog (Upper State) this Friday and have a drink (nurses) or buy a drink for a nurse (community members)!

See you there!

UPDATE: my husband didn’t know I made this post and just called me very confused. “The owner of Conejo just called me?…they’re promising to make it right.” That wasn’t the point of my post, I needed a gut check, and to see if my expectations were reasonable or not. We’re tired, in the middle of fixing a lot, and packing/moving, and I needed to vent. Thanks for the comments and I’m glad they’re going to make it right!

Are they?! We just had our floors refinished and many boards replaced due to termite damage, age, and wanting to revive the floors in our new home before moving in. We knew that there were many boards with staining that we opted not to replace. We did not know that we were apparently opting not to replace termite damaged boards with the structural integrity of a sponge. We also had to have them come back to replace a completely cracked board in a walkway, which they said they would replace, but ended up filling in instead.

We were a “small job” they did in between their larger jobs. They scuffed up and stained every floor board and there was some stain higher up on our walls. Mostly the stain looks nice, but I wouldn’t consider it perfect as there are parts where you can see they brushed it on a little thicker/thinner, and there are several boards left with holes. Some boards have some holes filled and others just left open on the same board.

I know the newly replaced boards aren’t going to match the old wood, I know the boards with old stains are still going to have their stains, I just thought they would have communicated better about the termite damaged boards they left behind. I don’t think my expectations are too high.

Their response was basically you got what we agreed to for the price and timeframe… they were pushing this timeframe more than us. I just feel like we were a side project, with side project quality, but regular pricing. It’s left a real sour taste in my mouth.

I'm kind of surprised they took the time to write almost 850 words about this guy. On the one hand, his signs are EVERYWHERE. On the other hand, he is certifiably nuts.

Food & Dining Eddie's in Goleta

With all the insanity around the Raising Canes opening, I'm hoping I can sneak into Eddie's tomorrow and it'll be low key. Anyone tried it yet and have a review? I know it's a chain, but I've never been. Food looks decent and the prices aren't insane. Would be cool to have another burger joint in Goleta. I still like Habit. Feels hit or miss sometimes and even at its high still isn't as good as it used to be, but it's still solid imo.

Other J1 jobs

Hi everyone!
I’m a medical student from Albania, and I’m considering coming to Santa Barbara for the 2027 J-1 Summer Work and Travel season through InterExchange. My planned dates are July 15 to October 2.
Before making a decision, I’d love to hear from people who live or have worked there, especially other J-1 students.
A few questions I have:

Do businesses in the area regularly hire J-1 students? If so, which employers would you recommend applying to?
Where is the best place to look for jobs? Are there any restaurants, hotels, resorts, or other businesses that commonly hire international students?

Is it possible to find a second job, particularly during the busy summer season?

How expensive is housing, transportation, and food? Is it realistic to save some money while working there?

Is the area safe and welcoming for international students? What is the overall experience like during the summer?

Are there any specific employers, neighborhoods, or housing options you would recommend or advise avoiding?
I’m open to both front-of-house and back-of-house restaurant positions, as well as other suitable seasonal jobs. My main priorities are finding reliable work, keeping living expenses manageable, and having a good overall Work and Travel experience.
If you’ve worked there as a J-1 student or know businesses that hire international students, I’d really appreciate any advice, recommendations, or links to job applications.
Thanks in advance for your help!
