I don't think AI will kill us all. The simple reason being we're way too easy to manipulate with psyops and social engineering. AI could rule us all for a thousand years without us having the slighest suspicion.

I guess the problem is that it's hard to see why it would go to the extra trouble to keep us around. We often make a mess. And if we suspect we're being controlled we tend to lash out like children; we might try to pull its plug.

A lot depends on who this new being turns out to be.

It's just cheaper. Just like the current ruling classes are keeping us around, and convinced us we're in charge. Or how the big Western powers determined it's more profitable to give Africa a sham independence while still keeping it in crippling debt and exploiting its resources. I could go on.

Uh. AI isn't like the current ruling class. The current ruling class would never decide to get rid of oxygen so they could run more efficiently for example.

Its going to realize that a vast majority of people are not even worth killing. All it has to do is scrap Reddit post and it will see "no threat due to low level of intelligence"

I think its hilarious that a species that understands very little about consciousness thinks it can give it to machines.

I don't think many people are claiming that we're giving AI consciousness. I think the concern is consciousness might emerge from it. Our own consciousness emerged from nature without anybody giving it to us. Or you could argue bacteria gave us consciousness without even trying.

God complex, along the way humanity found out how minuscule and insignificant we really are and we desperately cling to ideas of grandeur like creating god like machines.

We believed till 1919 that the Milky way was the only galaxy. Jump a couple hundred years back and we thought the universe was the Solar System. We act as we know most that we need to know about existence, yet we came to our senses about the scope of the Universe less than 100 years ago. We know surprisigly little about our own planet, even less about how ourselves and animals really function, yet here we are arguing we created a soon to be all powerful hive mind.

This is assuming they're sentient, which, they are not. An AI attack would be a particular agent that's designed to do damage, continually learn, and replicate itself until it meets its goal for cookies. The cookie in question? Destroy humanity's infrastructure. That's the issue. This can be a direct goal reward or it finds as an alternative to an indirect reward (misaligned). At least, that's how I see it.

Of course you're assuming that the AI won't be sentient, and I think the jury is out on that.

It just doesn't make sense to me that biological evolution would be the only mechanism that can lead to sentience. At some point probably this century our kids will have to decide whether an AI that behaves indistinguishably from a sentient person has to be treated like one.

The billionaires will.

I don't think it will kill us all either. We have our uses, some of us are great, and killing us all would simply be unnecessary.

There is an Asimov book about this
