Never had him but Dr. Chen and Chenflix saved me in math.

Dr. Hollich for psych

Dr. Drown and Dr. Kern for organic chemistry

+9999 for Dr. Kern! Unbelievable for OChem. Originally got a D and was so confused. Retook it over the summer with Dr. Kern and got an A! Amazing professor 👏👏

I graduated ten years ago and I just wanted to shout out Dr. Michael Morrison. He taught a class called Society and Rock & Roll (which I believe still gets taught). It changed the way I saw music in the United States and how culture informs art. He passed away about a year after I took the course and I was heartbroken. Such a fantastic professor with an infectious energy and a love for the material.

31

u/henryo2005 19d ago

The new professor Dr. Atkinson introduces the class and talks about Morrison and how he started the class and taught it for a long time. He clearly has a lot of respect for him. Atkinson is also a great lecturer and very funny.

11

u/voidfor_lacroix 18d ago

I also graduated 10 years ago and loved Dr. Morrison. He and his wife, Dr. Nancy Gabin, gave me so much guidance as a first generation college student and influenced my career so much. I took every class they both offered, and I’m so grateful to have known them.

I saw him 5 years after having his class snd he still remembered me! I was working on campus at the time and he left and bought my whole team ice cream.

Mine:
Milind Kulkarni (Best prof I've ever had)
Kenji Matsuki
Chris Brinton
Maryam Al-Othman (I miss her so much, the one light in the darkness of ECE)

6

That's what I've heard too!

1

u/Noraus_alt CompE 2024++ 18d ago

OH they were one-of-a-lifetime experiences, you got to do it

1

u/RevolutionaryMath971 Purdue sold out to an orange pedophile 17d ago

Haha I'm taking the EE equivalent - 440...
Wish me luck

12

u/Future-Diver3607 18d ago

Most will never know the level of GOAT Al-Othman was. I don’t now the full story but she was openly at odds with the department and as a result was forced out of the 2K1 course coordinator position. She’s a very bright lady that cares about her students. However, if anyone knows more about her departure, I’d love to know and where she ended up.

11

u/VenusianTransit 18d ago

when she was forced out a year ago, i clearly remember ECE students complaining on this subreddit about it how she was “making the course too easy.” elitists ultimately forced her out, she received death threats and police were subsequently involved.

there is no denying the inherent difficulty of electrical engineering, and its corresponding intro course. it is a difficult course, especially for students like me who have learning disabilities and struggle enough as it is… but i can confidently say that i would not have passed the course in my first attempt if Al-Othman was not the professor. she genuinely cared about our learning. she especially cared about engr students in other disciplines (ie. mechanical, like myself) and sought to keep us from getting held up by a course that wasn’t even the focus of our major.

it’s really sad that Al-Othman’s departure was the consequence of gatekeepers who thought her approach to teaching made it too easy. she in fact made the content accessible to a larger audience.

7

u/RevolutionaryMath971 Purdue sold out to an orange pedophile 18d ago

2nd year ECE majors are assholes who don't know how bad it gets. They were complaining that they "weren't learning anything" and refused to think about the fact that they could take the A and learn on their own
Source: I was an TA for the course when shit hit the fan
Al-Othman was one of a kind, I really hope she's somewhere that treats her better now

8

u/cavsking21 MSEE 2027 18d ago

It's hilarious too because I had her as my recitation professor, and not only crushed 2k1, but crushed it in 2k2 as well. She makes it easy to understand the concepts, but I guess that makes people view her class as "not difficult enough". ECE is full of a bunch of students who view themselves as better than others and who continue to want to view themselves that way

6

u/Future-Diver3607 18d ago

That is truly sad to hear that. I was also an ME in her course. She made the content very approachable and almost exciting to attend lecture. I also remember her helpful study guys that were ADHD friendly. That is something that not a lot of other course coordinators or lectures tend to consider when they’re teaching their students.

While I do understand the weed out nature of the course I feel it is unjust and very gatekeepy of the ECE majors.

0

u/RevolutionaryMath971 Purdue sold out to an orange pedophile 18d ago

It sure is. ECE Majors are assholes (I'm an ECE)

Nah. A slide of more than 100 page for 1 lecture makes it hard to follow. He is very intelligent though, but not good at explaining. Especially when it comes to the code.

Shams Rahmani for soil science - actually the most wonderful prof for a surprisingly complex subject. Anna Paltseva - also super cool and she has so much passion and dedication towards her field Olga Lyanda - Geller is absolutely goated from the Russian department

u/dikenichi02 IE 18d ago

I’ve been here for a while but here’s my list:

Band:
Douglas Fletcher: man’s the goat, also a sweet guy.

Never had Conaway but ik he’s goated, same with Gephart

Engineering:
Lucky Cho: Goated overall, have him for IE 335, IE 343, or IE 530/STAT 513 if you can. His dog is also very cute!

Joaquin Goñi: Very good guy and the lectures were the best. Was also helpful with getting my proper testing accommodations on gradescope setup during the first exam.

Jim Jones: No explanation, if it wasn’t for him, I would have not done well in statics.

Tuba Karabiyik: Probably among the top 3 professors that I’ve had here, too bad she left to teach at George Mason:(

Sameer Naik: Monster of thermodynamics.

Brandon Pitts: I’m a bit biased with this since I do have him currently. So far his lectures are at times entertaining and very informative. He is also approachable after class!

Yuehwern Yih: No comment.

History:
LaBonte: Besides the good lectures she was very approachable and helpful especially with the secondary source assignment. If any of you guys are interested in history and medical devices, take her class in the spring!

2

u/Skloinks 18d ago

Dr. Richie in Physics!!! Coolest dude and super helpful!

2

I’d say Humphrey for Bio bc he really tries to make it fair and possible to get a great grade. Freid is also the EAPS goat and his classes are super fun and accessible to none science majors

Tim Rogers for ECE 437.

Haven’t had him but TNV within ECE as well.

Oh and Chris Brinton.

Not a professor but the ECE GOAT is def Niraj. He destined the queueing system (I was there before and after it was a thing and it was such a shitshow before that) as well as the webpages a lot of ECE labs are hosted on which has boosted accessibility and convenience for students and he’s designed and redesigned the ECE 362 labs which are phenomenal. I personally preferred the labs with the old micro but they’re both his design.

Bit of a hot take because a lot of people didnt like the Civil intro to geomatics class, but Steven Johnson was a pretty amazing professor if you got past intro level classes. I think he retired a few years back, but he definitely had a huge influence on where I ended up in my career.

Also, hes moved on from purdue, but Fred Mannering was awesome for traffic and transportation engineering.

Last one, Sameer Naik made ME200 / thermo so easy, he was great at teaching that class.

1

u/Rock3tDestroyer 18d ago

Robichaeux for physics too. Love him. Always super helpful both in class and office hours
