Frozen tuition has gone from “sweet benefit” to actively harming students, faculty, and staff.

Feels like its been this way since just before my last year or so tbh

This doesn’t seem like a hot take, people have been saying this for years I feel

Facts. Not even keeping up with inflation was a mistake. The drop in quality from when I started to when I graduated was pretty noticeable

Food was the biggest thing. Every dining hall had things they were known for. Ford was steak, Hillenbrand had wings, Earhart thankfully still had the MYO stir fry and pizza last time I was there. People would literally walk from one side of campus to the other if a dining hall was serving their speciality. By the time I graduated all the dining halls served much the same things, even Windsor which was known for its healthier options. It was all burgers, fries, chicken tenders, pizza and General Tso’s chicken if that dining hall had an Asian food station. Some of the stations at dining halls and other food spots on campus just closed as well. The Earhart Cafe in the basement of Armstrong was the saddest for me

Edit: Getting housing was pretty easy as a freshman, then covid hit spring my sophomore year. I took the Fall 2020 semester at home, and in order to get back into on campus housing for Spring 2021 I had to enter a lottery. I ended up getting a Cary closet, but as a single which was pretty sweet. By my senior year the housing was bad enough that they had converted at least one common room in Cary into an octuple dorm room (definitely look up “Cary octuple”)

Edit 2: 8 dudes, 1 dorm from the Purdue Exponent

u/Cool_Giraffe6495 Aug 17 '26

FWIW meal plan cost is not frozen. It keeps going up every year (housing too).

5

u/niksjman Civil ‘22, Railroad Club Aug 17 '26

I’m willing to bet that is to compensate for the frozen tuition, and not to improve the food.

Georgia Tech froze their tuition for a while too. They’ve unfrozen it now

RIP Ichiban. If you know you know.

7

I lived at ichiban 2006-2009 before I turned 21. They did not card at all

9

u/Schrodingers_Nachos AAE 2018 Aug 16 '26

I remember taking my college GF (who was kinda bougie from Carmel) to our first date there on a half priced Wednesday. I felt like a baller picking up the tab without looking at the bill, but it was legitimately only a $17 tab.

I don't care how many health codes they violated, Ichiban forever.

8

u/WokeWook69420 Aug 16 '26

The same people that ran Rice Cafe, too.

Like a 30% chance at food poisoning, but you could get a 3 course meal delivered for $20, and that was with a $5 tip included for the driver.

u/Deliriously Management Aug 16 '26

Rice cafe was so good.

u/fastcarscheapwomen ME 2014 Aug 15 '26

Advertising “frozen tuition” when the “fees” have increased as much as tuition typically would is a joke

67

Still a crazy bargain even for OOS compared to other top tech schools.

Per semester. And CS pays it too.

But still better than the $90k/yr at UMich. or $67k at UIUC.

1

u/Cool_Giraffe6495 Aug 17 '26

Not anymore. Incoming 2026 OOS students will be paying more next year+

This is what I read a while ago:
Purdue to hold public hearing for tuition and fees proposal - News

They may have extended it another year for "non-resident"..... Perhaps someone can correct me with updated information.

Shit company, too. They pay worse-than-poverty wages and managers have played favorites with zero repercussions by the owner for literal decades.

17

u/urmomsammy #RealPurduePete Aug 16 '26

since they have a budget for a dining hall remodel every summer and did it badly (the new hillenbrand interiors suck, they just remodelled ford and it looks like a cafeteria), they should instead put that money into updating the old dorms like acs in tark, owen, wiley, and making hilltop nicer so we dont get mold poisioning.

78

u/GODST26 Aug 15 '26

Purdue dining courts aren’t bad

13

u/Critical-Bass7021 Aug 16 '26

Thank you! My god, I went to PU from ‘92-‘96.

Your dining halls (courts) are a paradise of choices!

We thought we were in heaven when we were able to start using our unused meals for Papa John’s, and we didn’t even care that we had to walk to Hillenbrand to take advantage! 😎

12

u/willemDefoesToes Aug 16 '26

rest in peace pre-covid dining halls

7

u/wolfmann99 CS 2004 Aug 16 '26

Its very different now. Each hall had their own dining, now its one big food court essentially south of wiley or h-3 as my dad would call wiley.

Miss my philly cheesesteak mondays though.

0

u/Critical-Bass7021 Aug 16 '26

Oh, I know! I’m not even ragging on “kids today!”, it’s just so funny to think how different it is now.

Imagine what it’s going to be like thirty years from now.

AI’m of the belief ai is not needed in 99% of cases and promoting it with this will only make the current issues with it worse.

Unsure, I stopped going there since I stopped having classes in that building.

1

u/brownie-milk Aug 17 '26

They do!!!! I hate it

65

u/BerryTea840 Aug 16 '26

For a campus as old as it is, Purdue needs to embrace more of the Victorian architecture style when building up the campus. It’s jarring and hideous to see gorgeous buildings like Windsor next to some modern architecture building like Bechtel.

Pick a lane.

1

u/ZCblue1254 Aug 16 '26

So true!!!!!

9

u/TheMazter13 PHYS 2026 Aug 16 '26

Armstrong is awful. The acoustics make every little sound magnified, and there is so much space wasted on what could be seating and workspaces. The seating that does exist is uncomfortable and wasteful (seat spaces made for 3-4 people are always taken up by just 1). It’s one of the least academically focused places on campus; it’s just Purdue’s networking/publicity building

Hicks is where real work gets done.

41

u/Minimum-Finding-4596 Aug 16 '26

Purdue has a beautiful campus

hilly brunch sucks. the only thing that's worth the hype is the sweet ambrosia aka the vanilla iced coffee 😋

Earhart is not a bad dining court (they have variety and usually there's at least one good dish available)

5

u/cfalcon279 Aug 16 '26

When I was at Purdue (I graduated 10 years ago), Earhart was the second-best dining court at Purdue (only behind Wiley).

2

u/rh71el2 Aug 16 '26

What's the ranking these days for all of them?

7

u/cfalcon279 Aug 16 '26

In my day, it was Wiley > Earhart > Ford > Hillenbrand > Windsor.

4

u/Chinosou ME 2027 Aug 16 '26

still mostly accurate imo. Id put earhart after hillenbrand but thats probably it

1

u/JerryFunny69420 Aug 22 '26

ford wiley earhart hillenbrand windsor

16

u/ArcherAggravating161 Aug 16 '26

Purdue has decent nightlife

1

u/Possible-Business-53 Aug 18 '26

Please expand on that. It sounds like the city council and school leadership are very conservative resulting in bars being very limited. From what I saw, there was very little to offer in West LA, considering how big the school is. Is the nightlife all Greek based?

u/EmphasisActive7513 Aug 16 '26

Everyone talks about CAPS or the university not doing enough whenever there's a student suicide. Purdue has one of the lowest suicide rates out of universities nationwide, and in my experience CAPS has been pretty helpful, especially the classes they do on helping coping mechanisms. It's a difficult rigor, especially for STEM, and ultimately there will always be suicides.

8

u/technicolordreampony Aug 16 '26

I was suicidal when I went to Purdue (2014-2018; freshman year was great but after that it went downhill) and CAPS literally turned me away, told me I'd be fine. I was only "fine" because I have wonderful parents who came to campus to make sure I was safe. If I didn't have them... yeah.

2

u/devboui Aug 21 '26

Yeah 100%, ive had and heard of somewhat similar experiences. caps fucking sucks
