Man, this freaked me out. I didn't do anything wrong, but I feel like if I don't admit to it, getting wrongly accused would be even worse.

Granted, I graduated 15 years ago and never took PHYS241, but you can never be too sure who they will go after.

u/nitko87 CHE 2022 Jul 28 '26

Reminds me of a recurring nightmare I have where it’s the last day of senior year and I check my degree progress and see that I somehow forgot to take/complete an English course.

15

u/watchthenlearn ME 14 Jul 28 '26

Those are the worst. I used to get the one where it's finals week and I realize I have to take a final for a class I didn't even know was on my schedule.

6

u/Catharsius Jul 28 '26

I graduated years ago but I still get exactly this type of nightmare

3

u/_Silver_Phoenix Jul 28 '26

I get this nightmare all the time. I also get one where I didn’t realize I was in a class until halfway through the semester and I can’t drop it so I have to just take the F

1

u/vortec42 Jul 29 '26

I still get dreams like these and I graduated 25 years ago.

1

u/BorderSuspicious8856 Jul 29 '26

Literally had that dream last night 😭

11

u/throwawayvinu Jul 29 '26

Graduated 25 years ago. Anyone have the email where I can confess.

5

u/urUpstairsNeighbor Jul 28 '26

I graduated 11 years ago and even I’m scared I’ll be accused

i just posted it

14

u/AlmondManttv Jul 28 '26

You guys have an oral section to the exam, right? How does that work.

7

u/Puzzled-Hamster-4892 Jul 28 '26

What happened?

15

u/federocher Jul 28 '26

i just made a new post with the piazza message on it. AI cheating accusations for the whole class. Its giving CS240.

1

u/Puzzled-Hamster-4892 Jul 28 '26

Can it be related to what is happening with lockdown browser in a university in Mexico? They are accusing people on cheating for the admission exam

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '26

I’m pretty sure the problem was with lockdown browser

Yes I’m taking a math class online over summer and all exams are in person and it is super easy there’s locations available pretty much everywhere to take and it is very smooth

252

u/AlmondManttv Jul 28 '26

NGL, the ones getting caught are always the ones straight up pulling out phones in front of cameras or throwing the entire exam into AI.

In the words of Turkstra, if you're going to cheat at least be good at it.

46

u/Realistic-Wait2819 Jul 28 '26

i have a friend that does that but you genuinely cant see the phone in the recording and hes mastered that art. i dont have the balls to do that though

I'm scared that I'll be accused just by me looking off into the distance lol. On my last exam, my watch triggered because it considered my heart rate to be too high while sitting.

10

u/MoneyRequirement2591 Jul 28 '26

I initially read that as the lockdown software flagging you for having a high heartbeat lmao

7

u/AlmondManttv Jul 28 '26

Lockdown soft is sketchy AF, hopefully it doesn't know how to determine heart rate yet.

2

u/Decrypted13 Ph.D. Student, Mathematics Jul 29 '26

Yeah I hate Lockdown browser. Outside of school, do you know what software is called when it locks your system down until you do something? Ransomware.

It's literally ransomware.

1

u/AlmondManttv Jul 29 '26

Yes, lockdown browser is honestly sketchy. I run linux and I have to pull out a Mac and a chromium browser for the exams, it's awful.

5

u/Cheap_Bug4324 Jul 28 '26

that's my fear, I'll stare at my keyboard when im nervous bc I don't know what else to look at and im scared they'll think im cheating because of that 😭

2

u/Realistic-Wait2819 Jul 28 '26

yes bro im always catching myself looking at something else

3

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '26

9

u/AlmondManttv Jul 28 '26

Some distance classes use honorlock or lockdown browser. Both record camera, but honorlock records the screen as well since it's a chrome browser extension.

You have to basically show the phone to the camera or talking to someone ig?

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '26

14

u/AlmondManttv Jul 28 '26

You never know. In CS240 students were just blindly throwing the entire assignment into AI and copy/pasting without review.

8

u/KnownTeacher1318 Jul 28 '26

Some hopeless idiots

3

u/CardFindingDuck Jul 28 '26

That's what I find most offensive - the lack of elegance in the cheating effort. It's like going to see a magician and they just yell, "Look over there!"

0

u/PiggyPump Jul 28 '26

Huh? Turkstra never said that, but yes, there were many ways to cheat in CS240. Including stopping the Git uploads when making on the server. And just simply copying a little bit of code at a time.

3

u/AlmondManttv Jul 28 '26

I believe he said that a few years ago.

1

u/PiggyPump Jul 29 '26

Okay I am mistaken, but I wasn't there at that time ("a few years ago").

1

u/AlmondManttv Jul 29 '26

I think it was around 3 years ago

50

u/world-changer7997 Jul 28 '26

I graduated. but how would they know who cheated esp with people using AI apps. Is this to scare students to plead guilty? How hard was the exam?

44

u/federocher Jul 28 '26

Obvs don't know for sure, but my opinion is that they're probably trying to fear monger students into confessing. What I'm worried about is them just shooting off accusations blind and punishing students who did the work legit.

14

u/AlmondManttv Jul 28 '26

I think there's a good amount of this going on as well. But with how blatantly some students cheat, you never know.

3

u/federocher Jul 28 '26

ye. I'm sure they got some damming evidence on a couple people and just decided to shoot their shot with these posts to see if they can catch any more ppl.

-2

u/world-changer7997 Jul 28 '26

whats the passing grade for the class? how badly would a 0 in an exam affect you. whats the passing grade for engineering students (assuming they take most of it) like IE or ME

1

u/olliebeetle Aug 11 '26

Exams are 60% of the total grade. Getting a 0 would be detrimental.

5

u/Purphect Jul 28 '26

Yes this looks like a ploy to get people to confess. My guess is they have a couple of sure fire cheaters and unactionable question marks on a handful of others.

3

u/lmaccaro CNIT 2006, MS 2010 Jul 28 '26

If they knew who it was they wouldn’t send this email.

2

u/gregm12 Jul 28 '26

I would bet that there are a handful of cases where cheating via AI is incredibly obvious. There's probably also a bunch of cases that look somewhat borderline.

Proving something was paraphrased AI is almost impossible, so this is just cleaner if they can get all of the obvious AI cheaters and at least some of the questionable ones to confess.

1

u/BorderSuspicious8856 Jul 29 '26

Episode II, really

1

u/minecon1776 Jul 29 '26

No we will get those in 15 years and they will be worse than everyone thought... until they make 3 more 20 years after that

26

u/Indiana_ECI Jul 28 '26

Online courses, AI, and financial pressures to pass students create a perfect storm. Employers are losing trust that a degree from a particular program at a particular university represents any level of knowledge or competence. When a product's quality control is eliminated, the perceived value plummets. Why would companies not lean into replacing workers with AI when they suspect the workers they hire are just AI middlemen anyhow?

11

u/ImaginaryPie8934 Jul 28 '26

Would people actually confess if they did it? or is this just a way to gather more evidence?

3

u/CardFindingDuck Jul 28 '26

It's a way to confirm suspicions. This is why you say nothing (unless you are bad at cheating and you left the AI prompt in your answer or your phone came into view, etc).

Hello Ishan Deo, GTA of PHYS 241. I think I can speak for all of my fellow students that no one has cheated on the past exams. I’m personally appalled that you think this would be an issue and trying to bait students into confessing something (that did not occur) on social media is pretty odd.

would you still get the F if the accusation turned out to be false?

-1

u/ImaginaryPie8934 Jul 28 '26

Good take, what are your thoughts on the 2k1 incident in regards to this?

8

u/Stellar_Hegemony Jul 28 '26

This makes zero sense to me. We’re allowed to use whatever calculator we want, and scratch work is a necessity (and there's a lot of it). With those two already, you’re prolly going to get a bunch of “looking away” and “handheld device” flags. Heck, Deo's nice enough and lets us have food and drink at our desks too as long as we show it in the environment check. So, I have my doubts that all these flags came from looking at another part of the desk. If he has handheld detection off on the Respondus settings (because we're allowed calculators), it would mean almost all flags would come from “looking away” or other “missing” flags. Leads me to believe this is either a scare tactic from a wildly high average or that some students literally got out of their chairs and/or shoved their phone into the camera.

Posting names, information, or posting a link to them is not allowed, as detailed in Reddit's Personal Information Policy. It's not our decision to make, it's against Reddit's TOS and could result in the removal of the subreddit., This however, doesn't always mean that you can't mention names. Public figures are exempt from this policy, along with anyone mentioned in a journalistic capacity, such as the local/national news. For more information about what and what doesn't count as "personal information", you can check out this FAQ.

10

u/CardFindingDuck Jul 28 '26

Admit nothing. Deny everything. Make counteraccusations.

i think you just want the thrill of being right and catching a cheater and your delusions being proven correct, ishan. we all know this is your account and it’s frankly embarrassing on your part

3

u/Acrobatic-Road-6504 Jul 28 '26

i dont know what the correct answer is to this whole ordeal, but the guilty flee when none pursue, so it may be best to stay silent until accused (either falsely or rightfully so) and take action from there.

With accusations, what does the process look like? do they email you with 'proof' and make you defend yourself or...? I genuinely don't understand how this looks from the ODOS/prof side of things, but for students who are wrongly accused I think it would be nerve-racking.

I guess we have a little less than 15 hours til the proposed deadline so here we go.

7

u/DrJChen Boilermaker since last century Jul 28 '26

The process looks like this: The instructor fills out a form (link goes to the actual form for those that want to see what goes in it) which goes to the OSRR. The OSRR looks at it, arranges a meeting with the student, and makes a ruling. Worth noting is that the OSRR goes by "preponderance of evidence" rather than "hard" proof. Essentially, in the OSRR's own words, if it was "more likely than not" that the student committed the alleged violation(s), then the student is found responsible.

The OSRR may impose University-level sanctions in addition to whatever the instructor does. The instructor can ask to be cc'ed on the ruling.

1

u/Acrobatic-Road-6504 Jul 28 '26

Do you think a student could reasonably prove their innocence or is it more likely OSRR would side with the professor and the evidence they have?

i.e. if a student has suspicious eye movement, could they argue against the cheating allegations or would it be pointless?

5

u/DrJChen Boilermaker since last century Jul 28 '26

I’ve sat through an OSRR conduct hearing before as an "advisor" (on a non-academic dishonesty case, to be fair). To their credit, the hearing officer gave the student ample opportunity to present the student's side. The student did a fantastic job advocating for themselves and laid out very compelling arguments, yet OSRR still ruled against them anyway. Every case is different, of course, but draw your own conclusions from that.

Whatever the outcome, students always have the right to appeal their grades. Though, that appeal process is handled right back through OSRR.

1

u/Acrobatic-Road-6504 Jul 28 '26

I appreciate your answer.

I'm a little worried about the whole thing but I guess I'll start panicking if I end up getting accused.

3

u/DrJChen Boilermaker since last century Jul 28 '26

That's right. No need to freak out too much in advance. For now, though, take a look at https://www.purdue.edu/odos/osrr/conduct/admin-conduct.php to review the process and your rights.

Best of luck to you!

2

u/Realistic-Wait2819 Jul 28 '26

so its possible to argue back or in other words if they accuse you its not automatic

5

u/Big-Duck-4969 Jul 28 '26

what happens if you get falsely accused?

11

u/CardFindingDuck Jul 28 '26

Same thing that happens if you get arrested falsely. Nothing happens to the professor or cops while you had several stressful days to say the least.

Also, should you be arrested, you should still say nothing. You have a 4th and 5th amendment - use them.

this is what I want to know...

8

u/fermentedkiwi Jul 28 '26

I got wrongly accused of cheating because two students and I sitting in the same vicinity coincidentally got the exact same answers in a 12-questions multiple choice exam. Drafted a 3-page set of claims and counters with statistics and answer probabilities, and they still rejected my claims.

I decided to opt for a one semester expulsion+F in my exam, the other two students preferred to proceed to Dean court and they got a year expulsion. Over unbased accusations.

The "law system" is so incredibly skewed in universities. Us 3 students were straight-A students as well. Other students who were in fact cheating got away scott free. I redid the exam next semester and got 91.

what happens if you get a first offense with the dean of students for cheating?

1

u/Remarkable_Lab9416 Jul 29 '26

This is entirely info I (bribed) out of my roommate last year But apparently the first time it’s a warning  You have to sign some document saying you won’t do it again And then take some course that you MUST get a 100% on.

But then again, he got caught making up quotes(which is still academic dishonesty funny enough) so i wouldn’t know if it’s the same for cheating on an exam…

probably safest for you to behave like a reasonable person and quit falsely accusing students without solid evidence, ishan. it’s up to you to be “lenient” and give a zero or report. your kindness could save someone’s life and future. with the stick you have so far up your ass and your lack of morals and compassion i doubt you understand that though.

2

u/No-Pack5087 Jul 28 '26

If one confesses and then withdraws from the class, could they still report them?

2

u/Strange-Feeling69420 Jul 28 '26

Same course but 2020, like an entire class got put on notice for cheating. We didn’t have ai but people were getting caught. I forget how they figured it out that anyone was cheating though.

but do they have to stay true to their word can’t they still report you if you confess

2

u/Legitimate_Algae421 Jul 28 '26

How would they know someone cheated esp if students these days use AI to help them with exams? Is this just a scare post so students confess

2

u/world-changer7997 Jul 28 '26

either they saw u using phone. or they added a bait question that if u used AI, it would give u an answer: idk how this would work if u use something like Claude Opus or some premium LLM, esp in todays age.

or they are gaslighting (prob not).

1

u/ranger3288 Jul 28 '26

If you didn't do anything what are you scared of?

29

u/Adriaplok ME 28 Jul 28 '26

turkstra has set precedence that you are guilty until proven innocent, especially with the number of false positives

-12

u/Legitimate_Algae421 Jul 28 '26

Idk who turkstra is but in America, by law it’s innocent until proven guilty lol. (I’m not a cs student)

14

u/burner46 Jul 28 '26

Purdue University is not a court of law.

11

u/AlmondManttv Jul 28 '26

There's always a chance that you get falsely accused, and with the current ODOS staff, there's no due process. ODOS is Judge, Jurry, and Executioner.

u/Neptune-8 Jul 30 '26

-4

u/PiggyPump Jul 28 '26

That's honestly his fault if he didn't collect phones at the beginning of the test, which prevents the kid in the back of the class from screwing over the test average by cheating.
