Guide MacPro6,1 GPU Pass thru (D500 GPUs) solved

Hi everyone, I made a new account for this post. I'm going to go a head and post this on a few other forums where there might be some interest. I'm also not sure if anyone solved this problem before, but if they had then the internet long forgot about it. Anyway, I managed to get GPU (the D500) passthrough working on my MacPro 6,1 (the trashcan model) in Proxmox version 9. I know it's a VERY niche problem to have, but I consolidated it all on my GitHub for it.

And yes, I used to AI on the project, so be mad about if you want... idc... I suck at writing guides and papers, so it is what it is. I hope at the very least it can help someone out there if they run into the same issue. At least it's documented.

Dude, if this works... this is a big deal. Thanks.

It works on my machine (and I hope it works for others), but unfortunately that’s about all I can promise. Extracting the ROMs (in my test rig) came directly off the machine. The ROM file on the TechPowerUp website doesn’t work, and even if you try to modify it, it still won’t work. So you gotta extract it from the machine itself, but it’s there. Apple just hides the thing in the EFI because that’s a totally “apple thing” to do. Unfortunately this script is very customized to my machine, and it’ll take a little bit of effort to get working on others (no one-size fits all solution yet) but it’s a start, and a repeatable process. Took me like 30+ reboots to get the startup timings right, and even then the GPUs still dropped out again after about 5 seconds, but would resurrect themselves later on but would remain non-functional after the initial dropout even though they registered as working. Basically just plugging their ears and humming really loudly while saying they’re working, but they weren’t actually doing anything.

this is awesome!

how long did it take you to work on it until you achieved stability?

With the help of AI, about 16hrs and 30+ reboots… would have taken days or weeks otherwise (especially since I have a job, and this is just a hobby to me). And since the GPUs lie to the OS I get why no one ever found a solution. The techpowerup ROM also doesn’t work. Extract the ROM off your machine, apple hides it in the EFI…lol
