It seems that it was pretty easy for security experts to spot the Russian bot traffic. It really makes you wonder why the Nazis running X didn't spot it and stop it themselves.
15
u/dsmith422 9h ago
Why would the people at Twitter stop it? Musk, Trump, Putin, Thiel, Xi, etc are all part of the same oligarch project to take all power and wealth from the people and hoard it for themselves.

2

u/BZLuck 5h ago
IIRC correctly they did spot it. For a moment in time X showed the posters location and a huge amount of them straight up didn't correlate at all with the vitriol that was being spewed. They were posting American politics but were nearly all in places like Thailand, Nigeria, Bangladesh.
One account called āMAGA NATION,ā which had nearly 400,000 followers and posts multiple times a day, was based in Eastern Europe.
They disabled that feature as quickly as they enabled it. Oopsy!
16
u/notJustaFart 9h ago
No, there's no wondering about it.
People that are too stupid and under-educated love the simple honey-pots like anti-vax rhetoric while having zero concern about a child's health when it comes to predatory sexual abuse.
To them, one is God's chosen path while the other is an abomination of humanity except their choices differ from the rational ones.

I saw the full tweet with the chart posted elsewhere this morning and felt like only displaying the mentions of "Fauci" with the start date being the day of the data center bombings, without showing data from previous days, was a poor way to make a definitive point. I'll just repost my comment from that thread:
I wish all of these charts that people are posting would show a bit of the timeline before the data centers went down as well. Like, was "Fauci" also mentioned ~40k times per day in the days/weeks/months leading up to the data center attacks? It'd be helpful to add in that extra context. If there was some reason for Fauci to be in the news around October 8th, it'd make sense for his name to be mentioned more around that date specifically. I personally don't know WHY he would be "trending" as I haven't heard anything about Fauci since those hearings a few months back when MAGA was upset about him pleading the fifth. And it'd been well over a year since I recalled hearing anything about him before that. I'm just irked by the way this data is being shown.
Edit: Out of curiosity, I googled "Fauci" -- went to "news" -- sorted by date.. Apparently he popped up on some popular "news sites" 4-5 days ago (so essentially around the same time of those Russian data center attacks) concerning something to do with his "diary". There's around a dozen or so separate news links from those dates, but fewer in the days that followed. So a trend that pretty cleanly follows this chart.
I'm not saying that there's absolutely no correlation but, from my understanding, simple but effective social media misinformation bot farms can feasibly be run out of some random dude's basement by jury-rigging a few dozen old smartphones together. I'd be curious as to what extent those massive advanced Russian data centers were mostly used for. Social media bots? It's a realistic possibility, but it seems like there could also be far more nefarious things to utilize those types of data systems for outside of simply trying to sway MAGA idiots on Twitter by mentioning "Fauci" a few thousand times.
I don't want people to assume I'm trying to frame this as "there's no way that there is any correlation between those Russian data centers being destroyed and a drop in right-wing MAGA bot activity." But I just don't think that's necessarily what's happening with this example. I'm also not a fan of disingenuous information being peddled and suspiciously framed datasets being displayed as a "gotcha" just because it fits a certain narrative. Because there's not much difference between that and misinformation bots. This chart basically just shows an uptick in "Fauci" mentions on Twitter because he was moderately in the news cycle that day and, as the news cycle continued to churn with more topical stories over the following days, his Twitter mention trends decreased accordingly.

u/Mighty_K 5h ago
This whole thing is hopium.
Not a single claim is backed by data sadly.
The only thing that we down is search bot traffic from that one site. Even overall Russian bot traffic is pretty much unchanged.

u/FrostyD7 5h ago
The main thing people seem to be hoping for out of this story is irrefutable proof that Russia is meddling in our elections and favoring Trump in that pursuit. But we already have it.
3
u/throwaway490215 4h ago
What people are hoping for is that their fellow citizens are better people than they might currently believe. I mean, we also already have statistical proof of that, how social media screws a with your perception, but it'd be nice if it was all Russian bots and everybody else was blameless. Scapegoats are very cathartic.

I'm curious what the breakdown in the drop in mentions is between bots going offline and people who would have shared/reinforced the bot's message.
There's of course interest in understanding how much of the right-wing discourse was manufactured, but it would be interesting to know if there's much of a corresponding drop in engagement from the people the bots are targeting.

Correlation isn't causation. A graph showing fewer mentions doesn't tell us why they dropped. You'd need a lot more data before drawing that conclusion.

Perhaps because itās bullshit?
However, independent digital forensics and platforms tracking state-backed influence have discredited the narrative that these events are linked: ⢠Natural Trend Cycle: Public tracking data demonstrates that mentions of āFauciā peaked briefly around October 8th, due to localized news coverage regarding his personal diaries. The subsequent decline on the chart represents a standard social media interest drop-off following a minor news cycle. ⢠No Impact on Bot Networks: Cybersecurity analysts and tracking organizations like dTeam (which evaluates Moscow-linked cyber operations) investigated social media traffic following the data center strikes. They confirmed to BBC Verify that there was no noticeable drop or statistical deviation in active Russian bot clusters or known coordinated troll networks across platforms during this timeframe. ⢠Misattributed Quote: The graphic attributes the text to āDr. Neil Stone, Infectuous Disease Doctorā (misspelling infectious). While a post mirroring this sentiment was shared by a personal profile under that name on X, it was framed purely as speculative text. It does not originate from a verified media investigation or a publication from an authoritative body.

All these posts are so stupid. It's just cherrypicking (or something similar).
Mentions of everyone goes up and down each day. So you can pick twenty relevant names, look up all twenty stats, and two or three of them will have drops just by random fluctuation.
Then you post a graph "Mentions of Person 7 drop dramatically after Russian data center hit!" and reap all the upvotes and likes.

u/CookieRelevant 9h ago
It turns out that this too was a misinformation campaign.
Guess Dr. Stone fell for it.
1
u/FeRooster808 7h ago
Not exactly. It's just complicated.Ā
" The " Muted Network " effect is essentially the digital equivalent of dropping a cityās water pressure. Even if the main water towers (the state-sponsored elite troll farms) are untouched, a sudden drop in pressure means thousands of minor pipes, automated fountains, and local taps stop flowing entirely. Ā When applied to the Yandex data center strikes, this phenomenon breaks down into three layers of background noise that suddenly vanished from the internet over the past week." " While Russia's elite military and state intelligence groups hide their operations on private networks, thousands of low-level, commercial bot operatorsĀ use standard public clouds like Yandex Cloud.Ā Because Yandex Cloud lost massive availability zones, these commercial, gray-market bot farms lost their hosting and proxy connections. Throttling these "rent-a-bots" noticeably thinned out the chaotic, repetitive spam that usually floods politically sensitive threads".
"Influence campaigns are cyclical: before a troll farm posts a narrative, a swarm of automated data-harvesting tools must read social media feeds to see what topics are trending.
Many Russian-language analytics companies, marketing firms, and narrative-monitoring teams run their heavy data aggregation on Yandex infrastructure."
1
u/CookieRelevant 6h ago
Complicated by the fact that causation must be proven rather than simply seeing correlation and leaping to a conclusion like Dr. Stone did. Scientific processes take more time than what was taken.
So yes, he fell for it.
1
u/Original-Rush139 7h ago
That article doesnāt address mentions of fauchi on twitter.Ā
1
u/CookieRelevant 6h ago
The article is simply showing the sourse of the disinformation campaign. Dr Stone arrived at his conclusion without proving causation only correlation. As Hichen's Razor states "What can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence."

There is no verified data or formal tracking indicating a measurable, direct drop in mentions of "Fauci" on X specifically tied to the Yandex data center strikes, as the observed drops applied broadly to automated crawler/search traffic rather than specific political keywords or targeted social media user handles.

Another bot? Fauci has testified over 200 times in front of Congress. I don't blame him one bit for saying "enough is enough, go F yourself, I plead the 5th" after being dragged in front of a bunch of clowns yet again. The only reason this time made the news, and not the other 200 times, was because he refused to play along.
2
u/RutherfordSaint 6h ago
Yeah I mean literally he likely was told to plead the fifth to everything because it was a witch hunt. He said even something slightly contradictory and they woulda been like OH OH OH SEE GOTCHA SEE SEE? Which is what they wanted. The 5th amendment is there to not incriminate yourself... which also encompases mis-speaking and mistakenly not being consistent.
