Well fuck yeah man... The U.S. needs subs in the Great Lakes to keep tabs on us Canadians, who apparently have been able to take advantage of the most powerful and greatest country in history of Universe for decades now by sending them watered down maple syrup, sub standard hockey sticks, and Justin Bieber.

But actually did you know the German U505 (thank you commenter) was floated to Chicago I think from Louisiana after it was captured and hidden. Had the Enigma machine on it. Helped the Allies win the war. Crazy. They built the museum around the submarine. Thereās a video on how they did it, that they show at the exhibit.

At first glance I assumed the new press secretary read her script wrong. But nope, the Administration is building a submarine repair center in Cleveland.
I'm assuming this is a campaign stunt. Trump made the announcement at a rally for Jon Husted, who is in a tight Senate race against Sherrod Brown. I will be shocked if this repair center actually happens, considering the closest thing Cleveland has to an ocean is Lake Erie.

Well, a bunch of the LCS are built in Marinette, MI and transit the Great Lakes on their way to their initial deployment. 1. The Erie Canal: A Hard Stop
The Problem: Current Navy nuclear submarines are roughly 33 to 44 feet wide and draw about 32 feet of water when surfaced.
The Reality: The Erie Canal is only about 12 to 14 feet deep, and its locks are only 45 feet wide. Your submarine would immediately run hard aground at the canal entrance in Tonawanda. Furthermore, your sail (the tower) would smash into the first low bridge it encountered.
2. The St. Lawrence Seaway: Too Shallow and Too Small
The Problem: The St. Lawrence Seaway and Welland Canal locks have a strict depth restriction known as Seaway-Max, allowing a maximum ship draft of 30 feet (with some channels dropping to a minimum depth of 27 feet).
The Reality: Even on the surface, a nuclear submarine draws too much water and its hull would drag along the shallow riverbed long before reaching the ocean. Additionally, larger Ohio-class or Columbia-class submarines are too wide (42+ feet) and long to safely navigate the tight turns and dimensions of the Welland Canal lock system.

In her defense, Lake Erie is connected to the St Lawrence Seaway, which does feed out to the Atlantic ocean. I'm not sure you could get a submarine through there, but if you could, there are parts of Lake Erie that are deep enough for a submarine. I'm not sure you would ever station the thing there. Downtown Cleveland has a nice port with the Great Lakes ore freighters that go in and out of there so it's got to have some depth, but still, it seems weird. I mean if you're going to station them in the great lakes, why not station them in Lake Ontario? Er...., I mean Lake America? That would make the most sense since the quickest avenue back out to the Atlantic Ocean where the wars would probably be fought with submarines.

u/GH057_807 10h ago
There's a Navy Submarine Repair Facility that just got announced, which for some reason is slated to be built in Cleveland.
I imagine this is what she was referencing.
I don't know how they plan on bringing the submarines there, or why they didn't build it near an ocean. I have some uneducated guesses though.
4
u/Falconjth 9h ago
Senator Husted of Ohio is up for election after being appointed to the position. His web presence is crowing about having secured the facility for the state.
There could possibly be some reason that whatever the facility will do is okay with being on barges or trucks; however, the current location appears to be completely political for this specific election and it's entirely possible that an internal review will conclude on Nov. 4th that actually there's no deep water port that a submarine could effectively use at that location and it gets canceled.
5
u/GravitasFailures 9h ago

Parts for submarines are going to be sent there for repair because the St. Lawrence River connects the Great Lakes to the Atlantic.
"A 46,000-square-foot facility designed to manufacture, repair, and maintain critical parts and components for virtually all current and future U.S. submarines."
"Components will be shipped inland to Cleveland for refurbishment because Northeast Ohio offers an ideal manufacturing workforce"
