That was a the point of the show it is a direct reflection of the MAGA cult. Kripke has stated multiple times Homelander is a stand in for Trump.

So it is not so much they have become the cult but they are the cult and that is point of the show. And just like Homelander when they start becoming more extreme the cult and Homelander doubles down. There was even an entire character that was showing a normal decent guy someone who had married a woman of color and was the stepdad to a child of color falling into the cult showing us that I could happen to decent people, they aren’t all monsters at first that Homelander/trump colors their reality into becoming monsters.

It’s an incredibly interesting and well written show I am squeamish around the violence and gore but the characters the writing and the production are top notch.
