I have two words for you. Sarah Palin.

94

u/Veshaad Timendi Causa Est Nescire 5d ago

Yeah, and she was considered the crazy outlier (even by members of her own party). Look where we're at now...

97

u/Ok_Profile175 5d ago

Sarah Palin was the start of this type of proudly stupid republican politics. And the guy you're glazing is responsible for it.

27

u/Historical-Range6016 5d ago

Sell out your principles for a small chance to win. Huge black eye on his legacy.

10

u/HelloCanadaBonjour 5d ago edited 5d ago

He was already a POS too.

Even the thing this image is praising him for, McCain basically said something like "No, Barack Obama isn't a Muslim. He is a good man." ...so it was like he's also saying Muslim = not good.

He also cheated on his first wife after she was injured in a car accident.

He was also a warmonger, just like Trump and Bush. He had some controversy for making a joke out of the song "Bar-bar-bar Bar-barbara Ann, Barbara Ann, etc.", by turning it into "Bomb bomb bomb, Bomb bomb Iran".

He probably also killed a lot of innocent Vietnamese people as well.

He was a cheating, warmongering POS.

Nixon, Reagan and W were all precursors, each being worse.

10

u/Ok_Profile175 5d ago

I totally agree. But Sarah Palin was the Tea Party confidently dumb addition.

Bush Jr was dumb as a doornail. Reagan had Alzheimer's and dumb as a doornail. Dan Quayle, idiot. Palin was just another in a long line of aggressively stupid conservatives.

13

u/geGamedev 5d ago

Supposedly, Bush Jr was coached to act dumb because it would get him more votes. He had to keep up the act to keep them on his side. I think it was Obama that mentioned that in an interview. They are/were friends, or at least friendly colleagues, and spent time together before/after being president.

In other words, Republicans prefer dumb presidents, just like Trump "loves" the uneducated and is hated by smart people.

W.

He was a dumbass shell president with a legacy.

5

Correct. Sarah Palin was the beginning of the tea party and started the whole process which is what we’re dealing with Trump.

Remember when the media tanked her? They said this person is not suited to be in office and we need to expose that. That’s journalistic integrity.

My how times have changed.

3

u/Cyrano_Knows 5d ago edited 5d ago

EDIT: Misunderstood you. On a reread -you're saying the exact opposite of how I took it. You weren't holding up Sarah Palin as an example of integrity, but saying that the media called her out for being the first of the crazies.

My apologies

4

u/Electrical-Volume765 5d ago

Thanks for re-reading haha. Yes, she was a clown and they called it what it was. We lost that in the age of info-tainment

Sarah Palin is a Stephen Hawking level mind compared to this administration.

Biggest mistake McCain made was choosing Sarah Palin as his running mate. As astute as McCain was in most of his decisions, that decision cost him the election.

What’s weird is Sarah Palin would probably be a winning vp pick today. We’ve gotten a lot dumber.

3

u/External_Music_3927 5d ago

Probably not be a vp pick today—Sarah’s too old be part of Trump’s crew.

3

u/BigEarth3 5d ago

I’m saying if she was the same age she was when she ran with McCain

10

u/Elipses_ 5d ago

I always got the sense that it was a piece of political horse trading on his part, a belief that by doing so he could bring the Tea Party idiots on side without giving them anything important (as VP is so often a dead end). He probably figured he needed them to have a chance against an Obama who was still very popular.

Of course, he clearly didn't consider that people feared putting his age and health as the only thing between us an Palin as president. Considering he died in 2018, two years after the end of what would have been his first term if he won, it is debatable whether his lack of attention to this concern was justified or not.

I remember a video of a McCain campaign event where a woman got up and said that Obama was an Arab. And McCain’s response was “no M’am he’s a decent family man”.

At the time he got praise for this … but it always struck me that he said that no Arab could be a decent family man.

Here’s some old video of the exchange from the AP:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jrnRU3ocIH4&ra=m

But the real unchecked proto-maga right-wing weirdness started to happen at his rallies. And he more or less rolled with it.

14

u/hard14sub1 5d ago

Yeah, I think you can take it that way. But, from the clip, i think they are separate thoughts.

The lady said "he's an Arab" and McCain started shaking his head no. Quote: "He's a decent, family man citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with."

He had just told another person that he didn't need to be scared of an Obama presidency.

I don't take that as saying that IF he was an Arab, he can't be a family man.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jrnRU3ocIH4

4

u/Jpatrickburns 5d ago

I took it that way, when I watched it live. A decent man, not an Arab.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Sienile 5d ago

I don't remember the first part of that clip, only the part where the woman asks the question and he responds. Really, the first part is even better.

I don't ever recall him being pro-MAGA. He was against Trump from the start. I do think he went quite a bit off the rails with picking Sarah Palin for VP. She was essentially a Trump precursor and that may have been why Trump decided he could run after they failed.

u/GainfullyRetired 5d ago

He got some bad, bad advise when he ran for president.

I was a big fan though I disagreed with many of his policies but I thought he always tried to be a good public servant. Loved watching him talk to Jon Stewart.

He changed when he ran for president. I'm sure it was campaign strategists that told honk to play to the far right.

4

u/hard14sub1 5d ago

Agreed. I'd have voted for him. But, he was 70+ and the VP was f'n Sarah Palin.

6

u/barrosoOso 5d ago

I don't think he had a choice at that point. When he was running for president he was at his worst. He gave himself to the party for the chance to be the president. But before that, he was a solid person. And after that he was a solid person. I'll judge him for giving in. But I won't condemn him for it.

4

u/Jogger_Dodger 5d ago

Palin was the beginning. She was already a governor but didn't have national attention. But she captured the Conservative voters' hearts and minds by being as shamelessly ignorant, and as proudly uninformed as they were.

Henceforth, American Conservatives were done being lied to by slick beltway insiders; from now on they'd be lied to by fellow rubes, obvious hucksters, blue collar dimwits, and folksy grifters of every stripe.

3

u/NapoleonBlownapart9 5d ago

Idiot Pride! Narcissist Power! Sociopathy is beautiful! Then smartphones and social-gonorrhea media networked them all, like a malformed Voltron. Thus began the dumbest dark age. Doesn’t help most Americans are conformist lames who wear their ignorance like a badge of honor. 24

u/willinaustin 5d ago

That's how you know this weirdly charismatic POS started a cult with the dumbest/worst Americans. Politicians used to have their campaigns torpedoed because they said potato wrong, or cheered in a weird way at a rally, or had their picture taken while sitting in a tank.

Meanwhile, this vile creature breaks every social norm known to man, tramples on every ideal we Americans are supposed to hold dear, and it only made him MORE popular with those people. If Trump told his supporters to jump off cliffs en masse to own the libs they'd do it.

If John McCain had won the election, he wouldn't have been nearly as bad as Trump, no question about that.    But that's a very low bar to clear.

19

u/Dry_Counter533 5d ago edited 5d ago

Just broadly speaking … I don’t think it’s an accident that Trump happened right after the first black President.

Obama was so smart, so controlled, so disciplined, so competent … like this vision of what the world could be. It’s like white folks rejected it on a visceral level and chose chaos. We nuked our own futures rather than enjoy the dividends of black excellence. It was that threatening.

I’m not saying it right … you know how Jim Crow happened only after freed black men started to get elected to Congress after the Civil War? And the labor market distortions caused by coerced labor effectively blocked the south from innovating and industrializing? Centuries of economic degradation … shooting ourselves in the damn foot … is the price white folks are willing to pay to not have to think about black excellence, or black power. To put black power firmly in the rear-view. I kinda think of Trump like that.

3

u/Dumptruck_Johnson 5d ago

Trump sucks for white people too, economically at least. But hey, got that green card to say racist shit and get a free pass. Win some, lose some.

9

u/PaupersSerenades 5d ago

That’s the point of who you’re replying to.

They hate Black Americans so much they’d rather starve than see them as equal in any sense.

6

u/XenophileEgalitarian 5d ago

"You know how,"

Ima stop you right there, King. They dont.

23

u/MiI0rd 5d ago

In rallys, there were people who called Obama a foreigner etc. He corrected them and said he respected Obama. He was a real politician. Not one I supported, but he knew the word compromise

3

u/TScottFitzgerald 5d ago

They called him an Ayrab to be specific. I also recall one guy calling him Barack Osama.

6

u/TobyFunkeNeverNude 5d ago

To be clear, I agree he was better than today, but I will call out the way he addressed the claim.."He's an Arab." "No, he's a good family man." The implication being that Arabs aren't family men?

All that to say, I get where he was coming from and he wasn't trying to insult, but man it's not the BEST wording haha

I don’t disagree with you, but one has to go far afield to find a national leader worse than Trump. I can’t think of an American president that even comes close. Trump is fundamentally corrupt and incompetent and the regime is a direct threat to our democracy and democratic governments around the world. I’m in my 60s and a lifelong political observer. Nothing in our history approaches the staggering incompetence and monumental corruption of this clown

19

u/Wray-Nerely 5d ago

I always wondered if John McCain had won the election in 2008, would Trump have still ran for president in 2016?

Without Trump's birther movement with Obama losing the presidency, he probably wouldn't have been glorified by the racists in America. In turn, there wouldn't be the MAGA movement either.

3

u/Pristine-Bite2768 5d ago

I'm convinced Trump only won as a response to there being a black president. Republicans could not stand that. Now if there was a woman black president the republicans would run a KKK grand wizard and they would win.

5

u/Veshaad Timendi Causa Est Nescire 5d ago

I'm not saying Obama isn't. Personally he's the best president we've had in the past 30 years. I'm saying I miss the days when there was an actual election between individuals that didn't devolve into the complete farce and circus that things have become with MAGA. Hell, even Romney was a much better opponent than Trump, JD, Rubio, and the like. 8

u/_Vinsanity_ 5d ago

Ok, I get it. But you have to understand that all republican policy since Regan has been engineered to stoke racial grievances and destroy the working class in favor of transferring wealth to rich and corporations. Decorum was lost 50 years ago because the rich realized they could propagandize a vast majority of the country as the fairness doctrine was done away with. Roger Ailes realized the GOP would proactively destroy the country perniciously because Regan’s presidency removed the guardrails. The Oligarch owned Media has enabled the rich to turbocharge this with minimal impact because they own the distribution of information. Now all these tech giants are poisoning your mind with reckless abandon. It’s very bad guys, i think it’s a wrap.

7

u/Kind_Fix7025 5d ago

McCain deserves the respect. I didn't agree with his views on a lot of subjects, but he was a man of character and served his country and never whined about it. Today's republican party specifically Trump could learn a lot from a guy like McCain. Like being fair, decent and human. End of rant

8

u/AmericanCitizenry 5d ago

He was a Republican at a time when we knew the party was Racist towards Obama, had a racist history of culture wars from Reagan and his 80's racist welfare queens policy. He was still a Republican after we knew the Republican party had lied to get us into a war in Iraq, killing millions of innocent civilians.

McCain might have done something noble once in 1971 by staying in that prison camp, instead of letting his Admiral Father get him out, but I'd argue he was always a POS worthy of the trash bin, snd the real reason he stayed in that camp was because of his interpersonal relationship with said Admiral Father, wanting to prove he was a man, make his father proud, while at the same time punishing his father with mental and emotional abuse unknowing his sons condition.

Fuck McCain. He just wasn't brave enough to show the true face of the party he supported, and arguably on a different day, would have acted differently.

Fuck Republicans. And everyone who supports them.

u/WileEWeeble 5d ago

That was grandstanding to appeal to middle. McCain had infinity opportunities to shame and stop Fox and his VP from implying Obama was a “secret Muslim”…and that Muslims aren’t just automatically bad.

He stood there at the front of the Senate chamber. Held his arm out wide (despite the old injuries as a POW). Paused for effect and hit them with the thumbs down.

I truly believe if they had given him the nomination over W. In 2000 the world would be a very different place. His platform was fiscal conservatism over tax cuts, broad immigration reforms to allow workers to become citizens more easily, and he wanted campaign finance reform that would have killed off Super PACs.

When he finally got the nod in 2008 it was too late. He’d lost a step and compromised his core values for party loyalty, Once the handlers forced the pick of Pali it was over before it started.

I liked him in 00 but couldn’t support him in 08.ince.

u/amicalg 5d ago

I would probably vote for him. As a republican myself i want my party to have balls and have healty debate for an healty gouvernment. Not the MAGA crap

13

u/Clone_JS636 5d ago

My dad voted Republican every election until 2012. He liked Obama as a president even if he considered himself Republican leaning (more conservative, Christian, etc). With the way the party is now, he's a "vote blue no matter who" mindset, and he talks a lot about how he mourns what the party used to be.

I can't relate, but I can at least empathize with that.

4

u/amicalg 5d ago

I liked Obama, he was a good president. But i didn't liked every thing he did. I also didn't voted for him. But that do not mean i hated him.

4

u/MagReg2020 5d ago

A respectable position. I disliked George W Bush as a liberal, but I never agreed with the claims he was "killing for oil" or some kind of sociopathic monster. He was a good man, but very not-competent for the challenges he faced. Trump is basically Satan to my mind, didn't like Hillary much either. I think Obama's going to be the best president I'd lived to see in office.

Republican=MAGA at this point. Yall try to separate yourselves but you support their same precedents which have led to project 2025 being implemented. Just like a cop who watches another cop beat someone and acts like it’s not their fault when they could have stopped them if they made the moral decision.

Same here. Could never be garbage like them. But I genuinely miss what it once was.

7

u/Wray-Nerely 5d ago

I'm sorry you're party sucks now.

9

u/amicalg 5d ago

They truly do. But even as a republican, i voted for Biden and Harris in the last tow election. I saw quickly in 2016 that trump was too far from my value as republican.

8

u/Wray-Nerely 5d ago

I considered Rubio when he ran. Didn't know he's turn out to be so spineless.

John McCain was a great American hero. It doesn’t matter what side of the aisle you’re on. He was a tremendous patriot.

3

u/HoldItBetweenUrKnees 5d ago

I have a tremendous respect for all that serve, especially if they are deployed in a war zone. That said, McCain was not a good aviator. He was not a good midshipman at The Naval Academy. Read any biography about McCain. His fellow midshipmen said he was too hot-headed to be in a leadership roll. He finished 894th out of 899 graduating seniors in 1958. Everyone that knew him said that he did not possess the intelligence to fly. But when your father is an admiral in the Navy and Commander-in-Chief, Pacific Command, you get to fly anyway. Yes, he got shot down. Yes, he spent 5-1/2 years in a POW camp. Yes, he refused to be released early because of who his father was. If his father wasn’t in command at the time, McCain would not be allowed to pilot a plane. He wouldn’t have been shot down. If he were a more competent pilot, could he have been more reactive with counter-measures? Perhaps a better pilot, in the exact same situation, doesn’t get shot down. It’s like the morons that climb a peak that they are not qualified to climb and have to be air-lifted off the mountain. Are they brave for trying or stupid by placing themselves in the situation?

I didn’t agree with him on much, but I could respect him as a human being.

Republicans of character don’t exist since McCain.

This is the worst result of orange fuckface, we have lost all decorum in our government and it actually relied on that to work properly. When people were decent first and could lose with character. Completely gone and it is spiraling out of control with these useful idiots in charge of the billionaires interests

2

u/Fragrant-Concert2848 5d ago

JOHN McCain was the only republican i ever respected

2

u/PapaGummy 5d ago

Courage ye, but even more - integrity. If any of the GOP had integrity, the courage would follow.

2

u/Due-Teaching-2812 5d ago

A man of dignity. He’s rolling in his grave.

2

u/Moerdacq 5d ago

Integrity in politics is a reflection of how they believe they need to act. If Fox News and social media is reacting positively to Trump, then that’s what they give us. In a way Fox News and social media created Trump

2

u/Tasty_Orange_1714 5d ago

Honor is a thing of the past now, at least as far as the GOP are concerned.

Edit: Rest well Bro. McCain.

2

u/MaysEffect 5d ago

Republican honor and diplomacy died with him unfortunately.

2

u/fitzysbuna 5d ago

and he also stood up for Australia when trump and friends leaked a call about our Prime minister ! RIP American Hero John McCain !

2

u/tschawartz12 5d ago

I remember him coming in off the top ropes with the 3am thumbs down vote that prevented Obama care from being repealed. Then Trump criticized the hell out of him and later on tried to take credit for saving it.

2

u/UR0LY3N 5d ago

“Courage” is a funny way to pronounce “integrity”..

2

u/Cyrano_Knows 5d ago

MAGA turned against Regan and or shoved their fingers in their ears and shouted FAKE NEWS FAKE NEWS at the concept that maybe Trump has tariffs wrong due to Reagan having once giving a very clear and concise speech about why he was against the idea of using them (too broadly or strongly).

2

u/External_Music_3927 5d ago

McCain was a great man despite being a republican. His was the deciding vote to secure Obamacare for millions of people. He always treated his office with respect, dignity and integrity.

2

u/Darkcwboy 5d ago

Thomas Massie is almost the only one I can think of that has courage to stand up against the stupidity. At least hes starting to call out shit more now thst he got voted out. Hes like 🤷🏻‍♂️ what do I have to loose now.

3

u/AmputeeHandModel 5d ago

I'll give him credit for that, but it's only because he's on his way out. He could've spoken up at any time before, but he didn't, because he knows if you speak against the king, he'll fund your opponents and demean you on Fox News and Truth Social and you'll lose.

2

u/MaddyKet 5d ago

I firmly believe it was the fact that he had cancer and he saw first hand what happens (and realized he was lucky with US paying his healthcare) that made him vote thumbs down. Conservatives only care when it happens to them.

That being said, I don’t think he was a truly terrible guy like all republicans are now. He was definitely the last of his kind.

2

u/Prize-Echidna-5260 5d ago

Republi-cunts

2

u/RowInevitable7986 5d ago

He was a true patriot and a gentleman.

2

u/MasterChiefette 5d ago

The difference between McCain and current MAGA/Republicans is McCain is a decent human being...they aren't.

2

u/Svell_ 5d ago

John Mccain was a bloodthirsty monster who's entire political career could be described as flirting with good but choosing evil every time

2

u/Tom1952Phx 5d ago

True and so Sad. John was a hero and more a Statesman and Man of Integrity Hegseth and Rubio along with Late Senator from South Carolina who used to learn from Senator McCain. But that golf game with Trump really got hom rattled

2

u/Informal_Process2238 5d ago

McCain did the absolute minimum any decent person should have done in those situations he is only extraordinary compared to the dregs of society the average republican politician

2

u/CasimirGabriev 5d ago

No, McCain was an asshole. "Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran." He used a slur against Vietnamese people in an interview.

2

u/CyanLight9 5d ago

I remember when people pretended to be decent. Now they can't even bother with that.

3

u/PaladinHan 5d ago

We need to stop romanticizing the pre-Trump GOP. MAGA didn’t come out of nowhere; it’s been building to this ever since the party realignment began in the 60s and 70s. Trump was the inevitable result of decades of anti-intellectualism and white supremacy wrapped up in nationalism. All he did was free them to say the quiet parts out loud.

The so-called “Never-Trumpers” still vote with him 95 percent of the time.

3

u/shershae 5d ago

He lost because of this. Winning is more important than doing what is right in todays political climate. People will knowingly vote against their self interest to hurt the ones they hate.

2

u/StevieTvboy 5d ago

They have traded in their morals and dignity in order to keep power. They are afraid of him and his followers coming to their houses

3

u/FreshLiterature 5d ago

Because McCain lost and Republicans ALWAYS learn the wrong lesson when they lose.

The entire Party is optimized towards accumulating power. They suck at governing.

2

u/mOOnKuLT 5d ago edited 5d ago

Nobody currently in the republican party spent 6 years in a Vietnamese POW prison camp during that war we should've have been in. Surely it gave him a slightly different perspective.

2

u/Sir_thinksalot 5d ago

His daughter went all in on the anti-American pro-Trumpism once he died. It was very sad and made her look horrible.

2

u/LazerWolfe53 5d ago

The guy was a honest class act and actually had honor.

However, does it bug anyone that he didn't bother addressing that the woman was calling Obama an Arab like it was an insult?

"He's an Arab!"

"No, ma'am. He's a decent, family man."

Imagine someone saying that about any other race "He's half white"

"No, ma'am. He's a decent, family man."

2

u/Federal_Dependent296 5d ago

I disagreed with McCain/Republicans on everything, but at least him, you could have Respect for. I haven’t respected a Republican since. Honestly, since then, I consider most Republicans to be Traitors to the United States Of America!

2

u/Respbid1 5d ago

Real true American hero was John McCain

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Two7358 5d ago

I disagree with most of McCains policies and directions, however he at least had a belief system and integrity.

2

u/retroplayer1990 5d ago

McCain was as conservative red party member as one can ever be. Yet, in comparison to many others now adays, the man had morals. Plus he was a patriot not a traitor.

2

u/serrida 5d ago

A modicum of decency? Sen. John McCain had a bit more than a modicum, the man was a walking example of good class and character. I might've disagree with him on almost everything politically, at least I knew he genuinely loved and wanted the best for the USA.

2

u/FlailingatLife62 5d ago

mccain wasn't perfect, but the dude had principals and morals and he had more backbone than any of the lowly worthless worms in the repub party now. this is a man who was given the chance to be released early from POW prison in Vietnam, and he refused because they wouldn't also let out his fellow prisoners at the same time. Dude had BALLS. Real ones.

2

u/dd463 5d ago

Remember when the worst thing a candidate for president said was "That one."

2

u/thejohnykat 5d ago

They barely had it then.

2

u/deten 5d ago

They'll just say that's why he lost

2

u/NotAFanOfLeonMusk 5d ago

He is the only Republican my mother deeply respects.

2

u/PeePeeKitties88 5d ago

Have you ever talked to a Muslim person about how they felt when McCain did that? He basically drew a line between being Muslim and being a decent person like he felt Obama was. And liberals everywhere rejoiced about how good a person McCain was by saying that Obama was not a Muslim because he was a decent person.

2

u/Abject_Giraffe562 5d ago

The last of the great ones.

2

u/jander05 Prefer Coffee But Fill My Cup 🫖 5d ago

Or when it was understood that we are all on the same side. Its because McCain was one of the last real patriots in that party who put country first.

2

u/rblackinrva 5d ago

This says it all.

2

u/AssumptionLive2246 5d ago

He knew what it meant to be an honorable American.

2

u/Southpolarman 5d ago

I did not agree with John McCain's politics. I will also never say he did not have this country's best interest at heart. He was the last of the reasonable republicans who would talk and not use hyperbole and rhetoric constantly. Again he stood for what he believed in. Today's republicans stand for whatever the orange ballsac wants them to that day.

2

u/whenisnowthen 5d ago

John McCain was a conservative, and did not pretend to be anything other than what he was. If you disagreed with his political views he would make his case and listen to yours. The fact that Donald Trump hated him so much says a great deal of positive things about John McCain. Senator McCain's strength of character and his intrinsic morality are characteristics that are no longer tolerated in the GOP.
