This reminds me of a quote attributed to a Brazilian priest, who said âWhen I feed the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why they are poor, they call me a Communist.â

For clarification. He wasnât a communist.

u/ThePuceGuardian 6d ago edited 4d ago
HĂŠlder Pessoa Câmara OFS (7 February 1909 â 27 August 1999) was a Brazilian Catholic prelate who served as Archbishop of Olinda and Recife from 1964 to 1985 during the military dictatorship in Brazil. He was declared a Servant of God in 2015.
A self-identified socialist, Câmara was an advocate of liberation theology. He did social and political work for the poor and for human rights and democracy during the military regime. Câmara preached for a church closer to the disfavoured people. He is quoted as having said, "When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why they are poor, they call me a communist."

not sure why it gets used like that
Probably because it's a horrible system of government that strips people of their rights with some populist promise that isn't actually possible and then a ruling class lives in luxury while the economy collapses and everyone else starves.

IMO, Another center-left candidate who dangles true left wing ideas like free childcare, lower food costs and better education to get elected but knows he will never be called on to deliver.
This sort of Neo-liberal spouting leftist views is why we cannot have nice things. Just elect a republican instead of the guy cosplaying as a liberal?
3
u/JellaFella01 6d ago
I mean the same can be said for the republican candidates, most races' republican option is closer to an authoritarian than a fiscal conservative.
This isn't a what-aboutism, the two party system is stupid.

That's true, but it's not his quote. That has been going around since long before he was running.
1
u/Heavyspire 6d ago
The line is widely shared as an anonymous social commentary, though it is a modern variation of an older sentiment regarding economic distribution attributed to Martin M. McLaughlin (a senior fellow of the Overseas Development Council): "Poverty exists not because there isn't enough wealth in the world, but because it is inequitably distributed."
1
u/Interesting-Elk1300 6d ago
Thanks for this!
2
u/Heavyspire 6d ago
I did expect the quote to be attributed to some scholar or something, it was interesting to find out that it's more or less anonymous. I just knew it wasn't a quote created by him and I like the guy.

It's a bit pedantic, but poverty will always exist with any kind of income inequality because it's a relative term. Even Jesus acknowledges this in the Bible.
The standard of living for "poor" people today is better than the wealthy from 500 years ago, but still massively below the "rich" of today.

The issue is that the standard of living for poor and middle class today is significantly worse than 2 generations ago.
That's debateable. We have access to way more technology to make our lives easier, life expectancy is higher.
Sure, things like buying power and housing are more challenging in certain parts of the world. But disease is down, medicine is improved, almost everything is way more convenient, free entertainment is infinitely more accessible etc.etc..
→ More replies (6)1
u/JKlerk 6d ago
No it's not. The biggest difference between 2 generations ago and today is that there is a lot more competition for labor at almost all levels. The labor pool is global is many regards.

u/EatAllTheShiny 6d ago
It's really not, the goalposts have just been shifted, so when you look at it through those shifted goalposts, some things are indeed worse. It is in real estate affordability terms, but it's not in terms of how much of your income you need to spend on food and clothing and other high competitive industry outputs. how much access to entertainment and hobbies you have, how much cheaper travel is, how much more reliable your car is, so on and so on.

I think what Talarico means is that the wealthy prefer to keep socioeconomic classes as they are. Social services have always existed in some form across centuries to aid the impoverished or less fortunate. Entire families depended on each other's labor and there wasn't as much hierarchy in the household. Then came industrialization when american "serfdom" turned into factory work where a specific demographic could work for wages. It became implied that only the helpless can seek aid, and it's the flaws of the individual if they aren't able to earn wages. This turned the man into the central figure of the household since he could earn wages. This left women and other demographics excluded from power because they had to turn to social services / aid if they didn't have a man in their household since they weren't allowed to earn a wage. And so on so forth - the general public today believes if you aren't employed, you deserve it, and that services don't need funding because it's undeserved. Which is how the wealthy want it to be. As long as the wealthy don't have to share power, and they are celebrated as individuals who don't need to share their wealth, poverty will not receive the appropriate funding to serve all of those in need. This is just a short summary of centuries of building what is now the neocapitalist economy in the US.

See? I think it's him saying this kind of thing that is making GOP spend $7M a month in Texas to help Paxton. I think if it was just your average centrist dem beating Paxton, there'd be concern but not nearly this much urgency. The GOP has seen when the left has speakers who can frame concepts so simply like this, like AOC, Bernie, and Msmdani do, they are awfully hard to knock down.

in argentina when the people who say this get in power the first thing they do is squeeze the middle class to give free money (literally paying them for being poor) to poor people.
I mean, I'm a socialist at heart but in practice politicians from both sides of the spectrum will never touch the rich, the system is rigged.
1
u/notMotherCulturesFan 6d ago
The reason poverty BAD THING exists is not because we can't feed the poor DO GOOD THING, it's because we can't satisfy the rich.
1
u/fanxu1965 6d ago
Itâs not about what is enough. Itâs the ego saying, âI want to be richer than him or I want to be in the top 5 richest person in the world in the rankingâ. Itâs a continuous competition to feed their egos.

It's really that simple. Having billionaires when everyone else is struggling is just absurd. Wealth hoarders exploiting a broken system and preying the vulnerable should be illegal and considered a mental condition that needs treating. None of this is normal or okay.

Poverty exists because it's the natural state of everything alive in reality.
We really need to be asking ourselves the more important question: What is wealth, how is it created, and how can more people get it?
