Haha oh sure buddy. I love that theyâre realizing theyâre hated at least. I hear MAGA saying theyâre not happy but also still saying âI love the guyâ so at this point I guess Iâll be happy with them just realizing everyone else thinks theyâre insane and unhinged.

u/hydrogenhypothesis 8d ago
About 30% of any given population are pro-authoritarian; they love strongmen type characteristics in their leaders. Historically strongmen are often both physically weak and incompetent. This doesn't stop the hero worship though.
31
u/Opening_Card3777 8d ago
Yup itâs just the same set of personality traits, you can gauge someoneâs personality on a very general, non-political range of topics and nail down their spot on the political compass pretty easily. I feel like most hardcore MAGA people i run into are just slight permutations of the same âguyâ.
18
u/hydrogenhypothesis 8d ago
It makes sense that who a person idolizes or identifies with determines their personality, just look at who Trump treats with deference. So for strongmen worship let's see: narcissistic, vain, capricious, greedy, and stupid. Did I miss anything?
Not really trying to be overly optimistic here, but at least we have a good example of how not to act...
23
u/Opening_Card3777 8d ago
Itâs also filling in the gaps of what they arenât, they need a strongman because they themselves are anxiety ridden and fearful of the world outside of their door, the strongman can take on the world that scares them. They are close minded and adverse to new ideas/experiences, the strongman packages them as threats to their way of life.
11
u/hydrogenhypothesis 8d ago
That's brilliantly put. A strongman seems to be a surrogate for a father figure, add in all that unrecognized trauma and mental illness, wow. I'd have compassion if all this outward turned pain and fear didn't cause so much harm.

Conservatives, by their definition and goals, are intentionally "the same". The whole ideology is about uniformity and resisting change/progress, and the best way to do this is by making sure everyone is the same.

In my experience, the moderate claim is most often used by people in fair weather times to come off as socially open or non confrontational politically. Theyâre also usually the first people to vote Republican when anything remotely progressive shows up.
6
u/bigmangina 8d ago
As an Aussie centrist, i have never voted for the right party because they just rank worse in every metric i prioritise, especially economically.
4
u/LayWhere 7d ago
Its crazy how conservatives get to own this 'good for econ' branding when its never true.
They're almost always worse for the economy, they're not even good for rich people unless you're like rich rich and corrupt. Honest businesses and normie rich suffer under lnp too, its all so exhausting.
12
u/jallen6769 8d ago
Im glad you said usually because I used to be the same, yet you won't find me voting for anyone that supports the current administration. Its never been because I don't want to be seen as a republican. Its always been because I feel two parties are a very inaccurate representation of the various beliefs and ideals held by the variety of people in this country.
I still view myself as independent (not affiliated with any party), and one of the funniest things that happened is when I took a long political compass test and landed dead center on the x axis. Literally 0.00 was my score after all of those questions. But since then I've begun to lean more progressive.
And yes. I do vote. Not just for the main positions either. My polling place is right behind my house so I have no excuse.

Now let's take a look at a survey of how people who identify themselves as libertarian tend to report that they vote
Not liking the two party system isn't the same as not recognizing that voting third party typically is equivalent to not voting.
Voting for candidates of either of the two parties that have a reasonable chance at winning has the same outcome regardless of how those casting the votes identify.
2
u/jallen6769 8d ago
As much as I don't like it, that doesn't mean I havent come to agree with what youre saying. I wish it was different but that gets me nowhere. I consider myself independent but I never said I vote as one. I used to identify as a libertarian but not anymore. I'm just me and I vote for the candidate that I feel has the best chances of making a positive impact on society

Are generalizations and extremist rhetoric what blue is against? I donât agree with every blue idea, but I have never voted red. Thinking someone has to agree with you on every single thing is silly.
The Democratic Party used to be about remaining level headed and not being hateful towards anybody that didnât see everything your way. Talking in such an extremist generalized manner is what Trump does.
Many of the democratic votes come from moderates and centrist that see the evil Trump has created. It would be wise not to push them away and to be a bit more open minded to people being allowed to believe in different things than you.
My Aunt was Republican all her life. A Nurse that was married to a Puerto Rican man and volunteered at a hospital changing bed pans until she was in her 80s (despite being very wealthy) decided to vote blue for the first time because she hated Trump and what he stood for. Do you really wanna villainize those types of people and push them away too? Both sides donât need to be crazy. Leave that to the reds.

Okay, and when asked how they align politically, do they say that
A: they don't associate with either major party, concluding with a non-answer.
Or B: they don't affiliate with either major party, but find the republican policies repulsive and behave accordingly.
The part people are bothered with is the non-answer, not the choice not to associate with either major political party.

I do not believe either party fully supports all of my beliefs. So I am somewhere in the middle. I believe that American politics fully lack a sensible balance across the entire spectrum. Conservative doesn't mean what the right has been doing for almost 20 years now. They pushed all the conservatives out of the Party when Trump took over.
The republican party is the party of being racist now and maybe occasionally they're gonna remember to bring up fiscal responsibility... but probably not.

I am a radical left libertarian. I am a man without a party, and in my opinion the rest of my party are hypocrites one and all. I believe in life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all of mankind that sets foot on American soil.
However I rarely tell people I am a libertarian because 99 percent of my party are just Republicans who hate taxes and care not for the freedoms of their fellow man.
That is a lot to unpack over casual conversation. So I just try to avoid it.
5
u/dax660 7d ago edited 7d ago
what is a "left libertarian"?
Libertarians think any public good is theft of their money via taxes. or that's how they began anyway - next to no government, and if you get poisoned by a massive corporation dumping water in your poor neighborhood, you simply hire a band of lawyers to challenge them in court!
Libertarians in my experience have the world view of a 13 year old - "everyone should be like me"
EDIT: just saw this shared below... and yeah, nope. I don't buy it. As soon as I hear "free-market" I lose interest. There are no free markets. To GET a free market, we should overnight, give everyone in the world the same amount of money - and enough to allow each person to make their own choice as to the life they want to live. THEN you would see a "free market" develop from peoples' preferences. It's just not gonna happen.
2
u/ResolveLeather 7d ago edited 7d ago
Libertarians are usually socially left. Politics, like gender, is a spectrum. Many conservatives, even MAGA's usually have a belief or two that are absolutely considered liberal. It's that most of ther beliefs skew to conservativism.
Left refers to left of center. Politicaly radical means to the left of liberalism. Even though many people consider conservatives as "radical" a more proper term to use for them would be "reactionary". I have some very proper radical beliefs.

There are only so many words for people who consistently prioritize freedom as part of their personal politics. Libertarian, anarchist, liberal. The term liberal has been coopted to refer to the establishment left, who are not consistently oriented around freedom, so describing oneself as a liberal when referring to your position on the lib/auth axis doesn't really get the point across. Most people don't associate a "liberal" with freedom the way they do with libertarians and anarchists. I don't know if libertarian is the best choice either because, like you said, it's origins and current actions are economically right wing. Anarchist is probably the worst term you could use unless you're actually an anarchist.
The question then is how should someone with economically and socially progressive as well as freedom oriented views label themself? Liberal is too auth, libertarian is too right, so funny enough it seems that shortening it to "lib" is the best course of action to avoid misunderstandings.

Libertarianism is fundamentally incompatible with left wing politics. Left wing politics is about using the tools of legislation, regulation and taxation to ensure equality of opportunity and outcome. Libertarianism is fundamentally opposed to the use of any of those tools for any purpose.

College educated men aged 22-40 are 50% more likely to get married if they are conservative than liberal.
One interpretation of this may be that liberal women are extremely picky and are just choosing not to get married at some point. It's likely the conservatives are having quite a few more children as well. So the dating tip here is that you should just be very suspect and picky and greatly reduce your chances of every getting married.

How likely are liberal women in general to get married vs conservative women? That alone may hold the answer

I highly doubt that statistic is accurate at all. Not saying that you are lying about it or anything, but just that whoever "tracked" such a thing probably did not put in the absolutely extensive amount of effort it would take to accurately get that number

Go ahead and look at the study IFS.
Outside of the actual study by IFS, there are many that support its findings including Gallup (2026), AEI / Cahn & Carbone (2024), Pew Research (2010), Monitoring the Future (2010-Present).

I also think if I was in the dating world I would ask those questions on the first date. I wouldn't exclusively talk politics but I'd rather find out I'm in a date with a conservative immediately rather than waste my time.

I donât like telling girls I am political because when I am with a girl or on a date the last thing I want to do is talk politics, but I am very much on the left.

As a left leaning trans person, anyone who thinks this way is as dumb as MAGA

Any woman who puts that much stock in deciphering your apolitical beliefs is not a woman you want to date or marry. Let someone else deal with that headache.

u/QuirkyQuintuplet 8d ago
It doesn't make sense to say you aren't political, everything you do is dictated by politics.

At this point I am turned off by anyone that makes a simple political label a huge part of their identity. To me it signals arrogance and tribalism. I vastly prefer that someone thinks for themself.Â

u/Comander_Praise 8d ago
Just say your center if you really arnt political. Both sides just least to tribalism

I get the sentiment, but as a not very political guy Ive only ever voted left. I just rather be known for who I am and not labeled by my voting status. That being said Im in a loving relationship and I was forward with my beliefs and what I stood for from the jump, honesty best policy

I know I look like a conservative boomer biker type all the way.. AND I'm a USMC Vet.. BUT.. I'm Leftist. It was on my dating profile, NO MAGA. Very few women in my area were interested.
