To be faaaiiir, Dubya had been doin the oil baron thing and ruining the Texas Rangers (baseball team, not the LEOs) for years before they elected him to the governorship… but he’s about as elite as they come, blue blood New Englander to the bone. The accent is also fabricated, take a listen to Jeb! to hear what he “should” speak like.
Funny thing is, they’ve done it for decades. Trump is a rich kid from Queens that literally lived atop a golden tower on 5th Ave, the Bushes are multi-generational American royalty, Reagan was a (shitty) Hollywood actor. Ya gotta go back to Nixon to find a working class Republican president (and he was still a Californian lawyer, certified “coastal elite” by the time he rose to national prominence).
Meanwhile ya gotta go back to Kennedy to find a Democratic president from the real deal upper crust… and I partially blame them (and the Roosevelts) for instilling the modern myth of the gregarious rich in the minds of Americans. Note: the Kennedys (not you Joe or Jr) and Roosevelts were great, but they left an imprint on older generations especially, regarding the intent of the elite.
W is a genuine Texan but he also comes from a family of wealth. This will lead to a lot of assumptions that I agree with but I want to highlight one fact that I think is important. Something probably gone forever in the modern era...
What separates the Bushes from modern politicians is the standard of military service. George H Bush was a distinguished combat pilot in WW2. George W Bush got criticism for being treated like royalty, but he was still a pilot and flying is dangerous.
The Bushes have a history of service and none of us would lose sleep at night wondering why an American president flirts with Russia and bullies our friends. it is sad that such a mid president can suddenly seem like a utopia in hindsight to this MAGA shit.
Bush was a war criminal, undermined our civil rights, definitely allowed corruption to happen under his watch, but he never gave the impression that he would actually destroy the country for a buck.
He was a top 5 worst president of all time but he at least loved America.
