I canceled my subscription to NYT because they just kept hammering on about Biden’s age, and yet we hear nothing about Trump or McConnell.

u/Andreus 23d ago

NYT is also a genocidally transphobic shitrag, so thank you for not giving it your custom.

Republicans are great at manufacturing an issue and hounding it nonstop. Conservative media will just latch onto something and talk about it 24/7 for weeks. They get into a snake eating it tail thing where people are talking about it, so it’s important and the people care about it so we need to talk about it.

Democrats just aren’t good at it. Democratic media is seemingly much more fragmented and is much less hypocritical. They are a little more news focused and less propaganda arms. (Fox personalities are actively coordinating with Trump for example). Additionally, there is so much terrible things coming from Trump nothing stays for very long before he’s done something else to move onto.

[fixed an autocorrect error]

18

u/voodoodahl 23d ago

Democrats just aren’t good at it.

No, democrats just don't own 99.995% of media. Even before fascist oligarchs bought it up, it was owned by merely extreme right oligarchs who catered to Republicans but tried to keep a little credibility. Those days are over. They're state media now.

10

u/IHerebyDemandtoPost 23d ago

No, there largely isn’t any partisan Democratic media who understands their mission is to help their ā€œsideā€ in the same way Fox News/Newmax/Talk Radio/etc. all act as partisan agents with a political agenda to help the Republican party.

2

u/Tjbergen 23d ago

NYT, New Yorker, MSNBC...

16

u/ElectricalTurnip87 23d ago

There is no "Democratic" media. Wtf are you even talking about? Why do people still buy the lie from right-wing entertainment?

2

u/0utlaw-t0rn 23d ago

There is no democratic mass media but strongly democratic leaning media does exist. Crooked Media, Meidas Touch, and Brian Tyler Cohen for example are definitely strongly democratic focused. But they are a lot rarer and less developed overall than the conservative media.

6

u/ElectricalTurnip87 23d ago

They're not media. They produce nothing other than a podcast that reads headlines from other print news. Media literacy is a problem on both the left and right... thank you for showing the other side.

I see stuff on the news everyday about Mitch and Trump. About Mitch being shuttled around in a wheel chair. see news about Trump sleeping or walking a certain way or maybe a bruise on his hand. Hammering Biden. They covered for Biden at every turn. He’s sharp as a tack. Nobody can keep up with him. What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream?

2

u/Mundane-Mud2509 23d ago

They should have been hammering Biden on his age, he wouldn’t have made through the term. On the same note they should be hammering McConnell on his age and ability to do his job and Trump on being a lying, raping, incompetent buffoon.

We need an age limit for politicians!

18

u/Carnivean_ 23d ago

You need voters to vote for policies and ranked choice/single transferable voting. The 2 horse race, entrenched incumbency stuff is killing your country.

Once you have the ability to vote for someone without corporate sponsorship, even if they only get 10% of the vote, without it being a de facto vote for the incumbent, then you will get change.

4

u/Legitimate_Ad_7822 23d ago

Been saying this for years

16

u/NoCard753 24d ago

We need a cognitive ability test with full results made available to the public. A lot of people still have all their cookies well into their 70s and even 80s.

8

u/ForeignRevolution905 24d ago

You’re right- people get early onset Alzheimer’s etc too- semi- annual cognitive tests seem like a good idea for people in power.

8

u/Lichondis 23d ago

Mitch McConnell is worth $30M. Most high ranking politicians, in fact, have enough money to bribe a doctor to clear them to run for office again. But a hard age limit is a hard age limit, and no amount of money can change your age

11

u/Lichondis 23d ago

A lot of 13 year olds would be perfectly competent drivers. Plenty of 25 year olds would make a fine president. But most kids are too dumb and uncoordinated to dive, most 25 year olds are too immature to run a country, and most 75 year olds are too out of touch and mentally declining to be effective lawmakers. We put hard age limits on stuff for many reasons. We definitely need one for a career disproportionately filled by wealthy elites. You can bribe a doctor to say youre still sharp as a tack. You cant bribe yourself younger.

5

u/ddplz 23d ago

On that note, Trump takes cognitive tests weekly (according to him) and his "doctor" rates him A++++++++ every time so its important to have an unbiased mediator writing these tests... And good luck getting that set up lmao.

2

u/Vimes-NW 23d ago

He's a special little boy

2

u/atkars 23d ago

Those tests can be bought. Corruption does things.

2

u/codingclosure 23d ago

They still have very little skin in the game at that point.

2

u/summertimeaccountoz 23d ago

A lot of people still have all their cookies well into their 70s and even 80s.

It doesn't matter. The problem is not just cognitive ability; there is such a thing as being old enough that you lose touch with the population as a whole.

But maybe don't set a fixed value? Maybe set the mandatory retirement age to "average life expectancy in the country minus 10 years", or something like that.

24

Trump cant keep his eyes open or even form coherent sentences without going off on mad tangents.

McConnell doesn't even know where the fuck he is 90% of the time. He had to be reminded to vote NO with Republicans when he nearly voted yes with democrats.

Both should be removed. Age AND term limits are very fucking needed. Half the people running the country have a foot in the grave and too old of a way of thinking

The NYT handed the election to the Pedodent after the debate. Instead of reporting that Biden had a bad night they flat out stated that Biden was too old for a second term without ever comparing him to his further gone and equally ancient opponent. Well, thats relatively simple. Billionaires either already owned media outlets or bought out more media outlets and can make "important" content what they want it to be. Also, double standards only exist when Republicans say they do.

2

u/reddit_is_geh 23d ago

Guys... I take it you're all just youngin's just now coming into politics. Politics has been, is, and always will be hypocritical. The sooner you come to terms with this, the less you will be annoyed with it.

The issue is you often don't see it as clearly when you're side is being hypocrticial, because it comes packaged with a nuanced excuse as to "why it's different and justified when we do it". But then when the other side does it, all nuance is stripped, and there's a demand for purity. The saying is, "Nuance for me; purity for thee"

2

u/Mindless_Chest_1079 23d ago

Ragebait. People have talked about McConnell constantly for months, including conservative friends and family I know.

Sorry sorry but that's absolutely false. But nobody complained about by this age but they complained about is mental health. It was very apparent that he was dealing with diminished faculty, most likely as a result of this but it wasn't the age itself that was the problem.

If trump couldn't find his way off a stage without a team of guide-aides then people would be complaining about him too,

1

u/ArmsVSeaOfTroubles 24d ago

There is plenty of mention of his age and sleepiness on the news. Do you actually watch it? Also on social media. Redditors post and upvote posts about his age all the freaking time. I despise Trump, but you’re being deliberately obtuse to think hardly anybody in media talks about his age.

why do people say the media hasn't been harping about this when everything you fucking know about this comes from the media... like we have information any other way... obviously they have been making it known... why are there so many posts like this?

It's not a double standard. It's hypocrisy used as a weapon against the people.

Conservatives have been complaining about him for a long time, it’s all over X

Don't forget Kay granger in 2024, texas rep who was found living an old age home after missing sessions for months

Conservatives don't operate on a morals first principle. The accumulation of power through any all means necessary is their mode of operation. When you understand that, you can not only stop being so confused, but you can also make informed choices and gain awareness when dealing with or opposing conservative minded people.

the main stream media has overconsolidated and been co-opted by moneyed right wing interests.

just look at what Zaslav did after taking over CNN, who he put in power, how he changed things.

this is why we used to break up monopolies.

media SHOULD be decentralized to allow for different opinions. Now, instead we have a handful of media companies bought out by billionairs and cronies of massive companies all colluding to control the narative they choose to feed us.

You Americans let him win. Then you complain.

If you have time to complain, do something about it.

No wonder the rest of the world is cutting off ties with your country.

Nah, it was dementia symptoms that caused concern. That's why there should be an upper age limit, around retirement age sounds good to me.

You have corporate media, with an agenda. Truthfulness is out the window. Even Reddit editors are in on it, walking on eggshells. Using the word l-i-e, flags the comment.
