Happy Indigenous People's Day Everyone!
We acknowledge that this gathering takes place on land whose ownership was not determined by modern academic committees, but by the older and more universally recognized institutions of history: discovery, settlement, cultivation, treaty, purchase, inheritance, and, when all else failed, conquest.
We further acknowledge that throughout human history, nearly every border on every map has been drawn not by consensus workshops but by the movement of peoples, the rise and fall of nations, and the fortunes of war.
We honor those who claimed title, defended it, improved it, and passed it down to their descendants. We recognize that property rights are meaningful only when someone is willing and able to secure them, and that civilization is built not merely by occupying land but by cultivating it, governing it, and leaving it better than it was found.
Above all, we give thanks to Almighty God, under whose providence kingdoms rise and fall, and through whose grace the Gospel spread across continents. We acknowledge the missionaries, settlers, pioneers, soldiers, and statesmen who carried the institutions of Christendom into new lands, establishing churches, laws, schools, farms, and communities.
While some commemorate history primarily through grievance, we choose to remember it also through achievement. We therefore acknowledge this land not only for who once walked upon it, but for what generations have built upon it: a civilization rooted in faith, ordered liberty, private property, and the belief that stewardship carries both rights and responsibilities.
To God be the glory, to lawful title its due respect, and to history the courtesy of being remembered as it was rather than as we might wish it had been. Amen.
