ok so basically according to the geneva convention you are not allowed to use the red cross symbol for anything except for the actual red cross but many video games (including pizza tower) have the red cross symbol on the medkit item thingy. when the red cross found out they were NOT happy and forced every game to change the red cross symbol. most games just tweaked around the color of the cross, including pizza tower. so yeah thats why hope this helps

Geneva checklist.

24

u/Dry_Perspective3095 Apr 03 '26

Yeah I rember something like that happing to subnatica the medkits where red but then changed to green

18

u/SupahKoops Apr 03 '26

TF2 manages to skirt this requirement with the red medic by having the cross not be actually red, it’s technically a different shade, like ever so slightly orange-ish, and might be slightly different in shape too iirc.

11

u/tomtheconqerur Apr 03 '26

How would they enforce that exactly?

13

u/Zymosan99 Brick Apr 03 '26

The Geneva convention is international law

2

u/MangleFnafFan99 Peppino Apr 04 '26

Cute Mad Mew Mew pfp, do you know the artist?

0

u/tomtheconqerur Apr 04 '26

Ok? That doesn't answer my question regarding how they are going to enforce international law.

3

u/UNSKILLEDKeks Apr 06 '26

"Some" countries recognize international law, so they can sue under those countries' jurisdictions if the game devs are in said country

Overall, it's just easier for devs to change it and then not have to care

Using the red cross if youre not the actual red cross is a warcrime

u/fat-ralph Apr 03 '26

its not a warcrime

gus is a pizza chef

Still a war crime, among us and deltarune both had to change their red crosses to blue

89

u/Any_Bath_3296 Apr 03 '26

And Stardew valley, there's probably a lot more examples

40

u/Saccboimoment The Noise Apr 03 '26

LittleBigPlanet 3 too (in a update they recolored the crosses on eve's texture and sticker from the journey home dlc to be yellow)

6

u/KindFineVulpine Apr 04 '26

Same with Ultimate DOOM and DOOM II. If I recall correctly, the logo on the medkits was changed to a red-and-white pill when the games were released with DOOM 3 BFG Edition, with subsequent releases changing it to a green cross.

2

u/wallmort_shopping_bg Apr 04 '26

I've seen it happen In Die of death, with caretaker originally they had a red cross on their hat now it's green

16

u/PokeRang Apr 03 '26

Skullgirls as well. Valentine's crosses were changed to pink.

rimworld changed the medicine sprite?

idk if it counts but when earthbound was brought over to the USA, the hospitals had their red crosses removed

4

u/AzericTheTraveller Apr 03 '26

Deep Rock Galactic chose green for theirs when they had to change it

11

u/fat-ralph Apr 03 '26

well there’s no need to downvote me about it, i was just joking :[

8

u/Dangerous_Owl_6855 Apr 03 '26

Also Skullgirls had to change Valentine's design a bit to make the crosses on her outfit pink instead of red because of this

1

u/enchanted-glimmer-4 Apr 05 '26

40

u/Sniggledumper Apr 03 '26

As everyone said, it violates the Geneva convention. On paper I guess it makes sense, so people can recognize them easily during a conflict, or so combatants don’t try to disguise themselves as the Red Cross. But I’m not sure how the halo 1 med kit is causing issues for them.

14

u/That-Advance-9619 Apr 03 '26

You see, video games using the red cross is a real issue and a warcrime 'cause the Covenant, unlike human militants and the UNSC -which are pretty much an stand-in for the US military in Halo- are famous for targeting humanitary aid workers trying to help people being targeted by imperialistic governmen--

Wait.

11

u/glitchy_45- Apr 03 '26

Same with stardew valleys sign

1

u/No_Lie_Bi_Bi_Bi Apr 10 '26

It's to set a very clear precedent that's universally understood. "This is the red cross specifically" to use it elsewhere genericizes it.

19

u/JoyousLilBoy Apr 03 '26

Becuase of the law.

18

u/K_Body Apr 03 '26

War crime

14

u/Laserdog10 Apr 03 '26

Unfortunately nobody can use the Red Cross these days cause it's a legit warcrime. The green color admittedly still works cause green in games usually means "healing item" lol.

5

u/TheNekoKatze Apr 03 '26

Geneva convention

5

u/Funny-Echo-4956 Apr 03 '26

geneva conventions try to do anything other than force video games to have a green cross in them challenge (impossible)

10

u/HawloKnight Apr 03 '26

it’s a war crime for some stupid reason

3

u/SgoutDungoPizzaTower Apr 04 '26

sometuing something red cross in videogame = war crime

2

u/Sasstellia Apr 03 '26

Probabely because it breaches copyright for the Red Cross. It may depend on country.

2

u/LunariOther Apr 04 '26

thanks to the geneva convention, you literally cannot use a red cross.

extremely corny, but a war crime.

Geneva Convention

1

u/Averagegenshinplay25 Apr 04 '26

The Geneva convention and medical laws, they legally aren’t allowed to use the red cross so they use green (i think)

1

u/Express-Record7416 Mushroom Toppin Apr 04 '26

To avoid copyright issues

2

u/burgersonmymind6806 Apr 04 '26

No, it's because it violated the Geneva convention and is recognised as a war crime

1

It's bcause of the Geneva Convention

1

geneva convention

1

u/pavlo_theplayer Apr 04 '26

its a warcrime apparently, but its just so dumb that it makes me want to make a game with red cross in it out of spite

1

u/ElainaLycan Apr 06 '26

As everyone else has stated, it violated the Geneva Convention but the reasons are a tad bit more nuanced than people give it credit for.

The reason the red cross isn't supposed to be used is because in times of war when medics rushed out on the field they used red crosses to identify themselves as medics and would tend to their men and civilians caught in the crossfire, it's a literal war crime to use the red cross on the field if you are infact not a medic. War medics also are not supposed to be targeted as they are considered noncombatants so it also violates the convention to kill them as well

I do think it's stupid that you cannot use red crosses for games but I get why you shouldn't be using it since it was specifically made for war medics.

1

u/SandPoot Apr 06 '26

Because the red cross is stupid

1

u/Dutchmon64 Apr 07 '26

It's spot the difference, clearly

1

u/heatblade12 Apr 08 '26

And if I dont comply? What csn they do?

1

u/Decimator24244 Apr 08 '26

Because the Red Cross (the organization) said the Red Cross (the symbol) is protected under the Geneva Convention and its a trademark.

1

u/adel-- Apr 03 '26

iirc it breaks the geneva convention and is a secret war crime /ref
