That's the "new" True Earth projection that the UN just voted for, Al Gore was wearing it 25 years ago

236

u/TucsonKhan 7h ago

So, hipster Gore. He was doing it before it was cool

128

u/Brandunaware 7h ago

A leading advocate for policies to address climate change. Helped inspire the movie Love Story. Instrumental to funding for the early Internet.

Is it time for the Al Goreissance?

24

u/sangimil 7h ago

He would have been a fine president in place of the one there that just gave our country away to his Texas oil bros, but he was quite a bit of a hypocrite. He has/did lived quite an extravagant life and all the while he scrubbed his conscience clear of most environmental wrongdoing with carbon offset credits. I get it to a point but he for sure took a lot of advantage flying in private jets and riding around in suburban when people who were also spreading environmental consciousness were flying commercial and buying hybrids. I will admit either had tradeoffs but I always got a bit of arrogant “do as I say not as I do” vibes from him.

24

u/Accurate_Potato_8539 6h ago

I dont think he's a hypocrite necessarily. You can think what you will about carbon offset credits, but my guess is Gore mostly believes in them. He's that generation of politician and that type of wonk.

Al Gore lacked the charisma

He had the Clinton policies but not his Charisma and he suffered from proportionality

21

u/Far-in-a-car 5h ago

Let’s not forget he did win…

9

u/Ro4b2b0 4h ago

I have both headlines that the dispatch ran. At my house we got “Gore wins!!!” and at my grandparents house their headline said “Bush wins!!!”

2

u/Imatsu 4h ago

He is the former next president of the United States

7

u/Cogwheel 6h ago

Too bad there are so many unavailable Al Gore puns thanks to The Algorithm

-1

u/far2deep 7h ago

Just like he did with his secretary

61

u/morknox 7h ago

Its called "Equal Earth projection", not "true earth". This map isnt more "true" than the mercator projection. All projections are faulty in some way or another. There is no way to accuretely represent the surface of a sphere on a 2-dimensional projection.

40

u/Atomsq 7h ago

Not with that attitude

6

u/artificerone 7h ago

It's upside down too if that helps.

1

u/Tricky-Act-31415 7h ago

Try longitude instead? :)

9

u/SolidDandylion 5h ago

The mercator is known as one of the worst though, it makes Canada and Greenland book absolutely massive, almost as big as Africa. Extremely misleading

6

u/Icanfallupstairs 4h ago edited 3h ago

Different maps serve different purposes, and the mercator map was never intended to give a representation of the relative size of the countries. If you want an accurate depiction you need a globe.

The equal earth map shows size better, but is terrible for judging distance, but that's fine because no one is judging it based on that, as it isn't the point of the map.

The mercator isn't a bad map at all. Changing the map to something that is more relevant to current sensibilities is fine, but it's silly to try and say that the old one is bad or wrong.

3

u/j-steve- 3h ago

Counterpoint: fuck mercator all my homies gate mercator

1

u/iceseafire 1h ago

Don't try sailing with equal earth on Mercator is best map for navigation

1

u/senorgraves 2h ago

Mercator is dope because it makes Europe legible which otherwise is just a bunch of tiny countries. Also makes it possible to do states in the US if you wanna

2

u/ScreechUrkelle 7h ago

Sounds like something a defeatist would say

2

u/NohWan3104 4h ago

Bullshit.

No one's implying it has to be perfect

But 'more true' is absolutely a thing.

X being 10% off, y being 80% off, 10% isn't perfect but 'more true' a bit clumsy phrasing, but more accurate.

3

u/SolidDandylion 5h ago edited 5h ago

No it's not, look at South America. It's a different projection, maybe the one we have been using in Europe all this time.

It's not the mercator (massive Greenland) but it's not the new UN one (flat nose South America)

It's probably the equirectangular one

1

u/Invinciblez_Gunner 6h ago

Does it have New Zealand

1

u/Sir_Thequestionwas 6h ago

Oh I thought it was a map without New Zealand

1

u/TheDwiin 1h ago

Yep, it decentralizes the northern hemisphere which overly stretches Europe, Russia and NA to appear much bigger than they actually are.

1

u/coulls 41m ago

Correction. It’s the older”Peters Projection” as the new “Equal Earth” Projection was a 2018 creation.

1

u/sunnyvas 38m ago

Should’ve been our President

133

u/Catch_ME 7h ago edited 7h ago

This is proposed replacement to the Mercator map.

Africa is bigger than Canada in this map. Spoiler, Africa is bigger than Canada in real life

Edit: here's a scene from the West Wing that explains it very well  https://youtu.be/eLqC3FNNOaI

10

u/CubbyNINJA 5h ago

And to make it better, Canada is really fucking big

Source: I’m Canadian.

7

u/naoife 4h ago

I mean it's big but its no Africa

2

u/Tartrus 2h ago

So big it almost doesn't fit into Texas!

2

u/MaintenanceLazy8892 6h ago

I just rewatched this today! One of my favorite eps. 🤙

1

u/SolidDandylion 5h ago

No it isn't, look at South America.  I think it is this one : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equirectangular_projection

There are very many

1

u/RaisingEve 1h ago

And an ep of Map Men where they debate different projections of maps. “Knowing Africa is huge is important”

1

u/InspectorPoe 22m ago

Nope, that is not new. That is just normal fucking map, the one Europe, Africa and Asia uses for decades, just Americas are not in the centre here.

-2

u/mylifeonearth_ 7h ago

It's even much bigger than Russia. Which we use to study as biggest on map.

8

u/FN20817 7h ago

Yes that’s because Russia is the biggest country

5

u/ThroatDistension 7h ago

Which we use to study as biggest on map.

Russia is still the biggest country.

36

u/DoctorMedieval 7h ago

18

u/tim123113 7h ago

maybe it's hiding behind the cup. lol

10

u/Caffeine_Cowpies 7h ago

But it is still a map with no New Zealand.

Because New Zealand is a psy op. Nobody has actually been there

7

u/throwaway34627594 7h ago

That's where Frodo and Gandalf live.

5

u/listerbmx 7h ago

Shhhh don't be telling everyone

0

u/DoctorMedieval 6h ago

They’re taking the hobbits to Isengard!

5

u/softwaredoug 7h ago

Sorry New Zealand, you took all the sea level rise. But thanks for taking one for the team.

1

u/Sir_Thequestionwas 6h ago

I remember this the UN decided to make Africa Larger and in turn the raising water levels swallowed New Zealond whole. It's so unfortunate that the entirety of New Zealand was rarely above the sea level.

1

u/Chefmeatball 7h ago

Is the cup covering it?

28

u/BlindedByBeamos 7h ago

I love that his cup placement ensures that NZ is once again, not visible on the map.

6

u/Jim_oz 7h ago

It's the Mike Wazowski of countries

16

u/Aeon_Return 7h ago

Bring back short shorts.

8

u/RooneyD 6h ago

Man, if Gore invited me around to his place, and when I turned up he was wearing those, I would know Im getting lucky

2

u/Sad-Concert8525 46m ago

Just go with the flow bro

6

u/Plrdr21 6h ago

They never left, you just need to be bold enough to wear them. Real runners never quit wearing these.

6

u/Aeon_Return 6h ago

Straight woman approved. Men, if your gams are up to the challenge, show 'em off! We like a bit of eye candy too 🔥

5

u/Sir_Thequestionwas 6h ago

Fun Fact - 80% of supposed female legs in advertisments are actually male. Basically 80% of female leg models are male.

this is just an urban legend there is no evidence of this whatsoever

1

u/potataoboi 2h ago

split shorts are the best shit ever if youre running any distance

6

u/tanfierro 5h ago

dont zoom in on gores dick, ok?

4

u/ilovjedi 7h ago

I (F) miss when men used to wear shorts like this.

2

u/Plrdr21 6h ago

Some of us still do.

3

u/Plrdr21 6h ago

I just want to point out that this is what mens athletic shorts should look like. This and Tom Selleck in Magnum PI are examples of how mens shorts should be. The 80s-mid 90s got plenty of things wrong but short shorts were peak. Somewhere between 1993 and the early 2000s men's shorts seemed to have changed from shorts designed for men with legs, to shorts designed for men afraid to let anyone see their kneecaps.

1

u/potataoboi 2h ago

youre thinking of what are essentialy basketball shorts, you can get split shorts with or without liners pretty easily

1

u/Careless-Two2215 7h ago

It shows he should have been the president but our time line sucks.

2

u/InterestingCabinet41 6h ago

The 90s were a weird time, man.

2

u/Carthonn 6h ago

World would have been a lot different if we actually counted all the votes in 2000.

2

u/repeat_offender_ 4h ago

Why’s it looking at me

2

u/Extreme-King 4h ago

Clearly New Zealand doesn't exist...can't see it on the map

2

u/TrainerPublic 4h ago

Imagine if he had won.

2

u/Affectionate_Gas222 4h ago

But can we just take a moment to remember when men wore booty shorts.

2

u/Public_Knee6288 2h ago

No new zealand

4

u/luna_rey55 7h ago

Maybe it has something to do with the size of continents on the map

2

u/Thomassaurus 7h ago

That's also what I'm wondering just because I think I heard something about a new world map a bit ago.

1

u/avid-shrug 7h ago

It looks like an equal-area projection, which is the same type of map the UN adopted recently with some controversy

1

u/Barilla3113 7h ago

It's the Gall–Peters projection I think, displays the size of continents much more accurately than Mercator (which is infamous for making Europe look much larger than it actually is).

1

u/dangernoodlezzz 7h ago

The world would be different if he wouldn’t have been cheated out by George W Bush

1

u/LA31716 6h ago

Man-bear-pig map

1

u/THRILLMOVSE 5h ago

Not sure if the cup is covering it, but, I don't think New Zealand would fit on there

1

u/Charming_Airline7419 5h ago

I say thank you to Gore every time I log on to the internet.

1

u/GreedyFatBastard 4h ago

Who's the guy behind al gore?

1

0

u/New-Acanthisitta-641 7h ago

Why is this on here again? This is so stupid.

You are the joke.

2

u/Invader_Skooge22 6h ago

OP thought there was a punchline to be explained

1

u/New-Acanthisitta-641 5h ago

Now that's funny!

0

u/Ummummbaba 4h ago

0

-1

u/AirRaptor12 7h ago

0

u/Wide_Appointment5602 5h ago

Am I the only one bothered by how short their shorts are. Idk man shorts should be around the knees I don’t want to be seeing your upper thighs

2

u/Affectionate_Gas222 4h ago

The 1900s were wild.

-1

u/uwill1der 7h ago

its a more accurate map than what we had been using to that point.

The Gall-Peters projection

2

u/Specialist_Sector54 7h ago

All projects are inaccurate in some way, Mercator and Gall-Peters are both flawed, Mercator distorts size and distance to maintain angles and shapes, Gall-Peters distorts angles and shapes to maintain size.

Big proponent of the Robinson or Winkel-Tripel.

Gall-Peters just looks kinda ugly because it distorts the shapes of landmasses so much.

0

u/PreciousTC 7h ago

Oh phew. Glad that's finally handled. Guess I'll have to protest something else now lmao

Russia is knocking at Europe's door and this is what the UN focuses on LOL

0

u/uwill1der 7h ago

this was 30 years ago

0

u/PreciousTC 7h ago

This was 2 weeks ago

0

u/Barilla3113 7h ago

The UN can do more than one thing at once?

0

u/PreciousTC 7h ago

Are they, though?

3

u/TrollerCoasterWoo 7h ago

They have trouble with one thing at once

0

u/morknox 7h ago

Its note more accurate if you are interested in shape. Only more accurate in terms of size of landmasses.

-2

u/TheGipper80 7h ago

Can we all just agree that if any president wears shorts like that again, we automatically invoke the 25th?

3

u/kreaganr93 7h ago

This man lost the presidency to a genocidal madman. So no, we will not be doing that. Lol

-4

u/Historical-Record227 7h ago

Man the president was just dressing like a slut in the 90s, huh?
