an ai tech bro made a copy of the adobe suite that doesn't work very well and is abandoning it to make more abandonware

I mean the photoshop WORKS, and it has all of the functions, but the UI is awful and some tools don’t behave as you might expect them to for something that markets itself as a photoshop copy. It’s just a bit too foreign for my liking, not that I won’t use it as a student that can’t afford photoshop on my personal computer for my photography work

If you can't afford Photoshop why not try GIMP? Idk anything about photo editing so to me they're the same

u/Wildebohe 7h ago

Came here for GIMP - why would someone try to make a free version of Ps when a pretty good one has existed for years?

21

u/intjonmiller 7h ago

I haven't tried GIMP for some years now, but last time I did I absolutely hated the interface. Felt like every other example of an engineer checking off all the required boxes without any awareness of design.

Just searched Gimp Photo and didn’t find any software…

u/intjonmiller 5h ago

It literally has its own Wikipedia page. Your searching skills may be lacking. 🤷‍♂️

https://www.gimp.org/

For real. It was impressive 20 years ago but has not kept up with the times. Have they had a single feature in their entire existence that was innovative? Pretty sure they’ve just been 3 years behind adobe for the projects entire history.

Gimp kinda sucks, I'd be suggesting Krita as an alternative but really a free Photoshop light/lightroom light with the same UI and the basic functionality of Photoshop would be amazing.

I think its something about artcraft having ai assist imbeded to their programs

u/OriginalAntrox 4h ago

They are not the some in any way. GIMP is a lackluster, slow, barebones app with a really shitty UI. I am not going to glaze Photoshop but i am going to say there is literally no other Software out there that even compares to it in terms of what it can do except maybe one, but its absolutely not GIMP. So i find it laughable when people say GIMP is the PS alternative when its not even close, its like the Photoshop equivalent of MS Paint.

I'm not sure how BDSM helps me edit photos and I'm afraid to ask.

u/Raimondi06 3h ago

What about photopea

1

u/gsweats 3h ago

Or Krita

1

u/Dave_A480 3h ago

GTK sucks....

And the supposed purpose of the knockoffs was to be interface compatible but apparently the author got bored and moved on....

2

u/nugs-_- 3h ago

gimp is hard and
uh yeah its just hard

u/timooun 4h ago

did you really try it ? most of the tools has no effects. and I love that a simple copy and paste of a layer are paste three times automatically, nice feature.
this not how we normally develop a product: create an empty shell and make barely functionnal some features…

I don't understand the praise. Pirating Adobe has been insanely easy for so many years. Why bother?

9

u/PassionGlobal 8h ago

Pirating Adobe is easy. Getting it to work on Linux is less so. As is being a viable free option while being a legit threat to Adobes subscription nonsense

2

u/lemonwingz 4h ago

Pirate Windows?

0

u/PassionGlobal 1h ago

Malware risk, plus having to put up with Microsoft's shit.

3

u/wafflehousebattle 6h ago

Honestly, I remember it being easy in the before time, but I have no idea how to accomplish it in the modern era, with it being a subscription based model and all.

1

u/npc_housecat 3h ago

Pirating Photoshop is a trojan / malware minefield not to mention it's a huge legal risk if your using it for commercial / freelance work and making money off it.

I want a solid and free PDF program that is fast and does basic PDF editing...actually, I'd pay for one if I could avoid an Adobe subscription

11

u/PlatyNumb 8h ago

Theres tons of online options ive used over the years. Never actually paid for Adobe and im an admin who also does marketing

6

u/givemealighter 8h ago

Pdf24 Desktop Version?

1

u/Several-County-1808 6h ago

I'll check it out thanks

3

u/cptdino 8h ago

He already created one.

https://getartcraft.com/apps/pdfcraft

It's open source, so you can do adjustments yourself if you're a developer or, well... have access to any frontier AI.

2

u/Middle-Outside-8222 8h ago

Was there like a full list of open source he already had done, I think I seen photoshop and others

3

u/cptdino 7h ago

Yeah, his GitHub or his Website (sent previously, just go to apps)

foxit pdf has been quite good to me.

2

u/realupdog 3h ago

perhaps try libreoffice? idk if they have specifically a PDF editor but i know they have a microsoft word clone so.....

1

u/Sim775 3h ago

I use Power PDF from TungstenAutomation; you pay once and have it for life and the UI is very close to Microsoft Word

u/itsnothatsimple 8h ago

Desenvolveram ferramentas de AI que conseguem fazer engenharia reversa em softwares como o Adobe Photoshop e criar versões open-source quase idênticas. Como o Photocraft (https://github.com/storytold/photocraft).

Ah, eu sou Stewie, eu acho. Me venerem e etc

Someone used AI to clone Adobe products called Artcraft. Haven’t tried it myself but saw a video where someone thought it was surprisingly good so far.

Question is, will it improve or die. Many vibe coded projects ends up dying because the hard part of software has never been the bootstrapping of a project but the maintenance. AI just lowers that bootstrap curve steepness amplifying the height of the maintenance bar.

And you’ll see the duality there of people being insanely hateful towards both adobe and AI. But this is 2026. New adobe alternatives will never see light without AI. So either you accept it and test by yourself. Or you stay with long maintained and proven software such as Gimp, Krita and Kdenlive

1

u/Classic_District1021 8h ago

Soon ChatGPT will be able to build you adobe for free! SaaS is dying.

4

u/Sweet_Speech_9054 6h ago

Is chat gpt not SaaS?

1

u/Sufficient_Risk_8127 7h ago

Technically, you could spend ages reverse-engineering/decompiling the application.

It's a meme from people who think they beat the corporations by involving other, far less competent corporations

There are AI assisted tool on net that can be searched through and open to the public. Might as well you can do your own photoshop program
