If you’ve ever read philosophers you know that’s not true. At least half of them are dangerously pre-nut

Is OP dense? Like if he can’t see what is going on on the right then my guy is either 8 years old, trolling or genuinely dense.
Heck, even at 8 when I didn’t even know still how babies were made I would feel a tingle tingle in my willy when I saw a pic like that.

Philosophers will write many books on the topic, biologists say it's just to procreate

Biologists have many divorces, usually after telling the spouse "it's not love it's just a desire to procreate!"
86
u/jsbach90 9h ago
Dr. Hartman here,
I'm not gonna lie to you, I took an oath in medical school. Actually, I took a lot of things in medical school- but that's not the point, the point is no matter what anybody says we're here for, we're here to get laid and make life continue on living and nobody can argue with that.
16
u/youburyitidigitup 9h ago
To be fair, it doesn’t say our purpose, it says the purposes of life. Not all living organisms reproduce through sex.
10
u/Artistic-Value-2022 9h ago
we actually dont have a purpose at all. the instinct to procreate is just a strong trait to have for procreation.
4
u/Greata2006 8h ago
This
Procreation is not the meaning of life. It's just that we were naturally selected to feel immense satisfaction from procreating. Which is nothing surprising.
1
u/Maleficent_Memory831 7h ago
It's not a purpose unless there's a creator. Otherwise it's just instinct. It takes the philosophers to say why there's more to life than just blind obedience to baser impulses.
4
u/Artistic-Value-2022 7h ago
i dont think you need philosophers for that at all. you are your own master. choose your own purpose

Lots of people work on a construction site - not all of them lay bricks
Find a balance between being happy, doing good to others and contributing to society. Ever heard the phrase ‘it takes a village’?

u/youburyitidigitup 9h ago
No, they’re just an evolutionary dead end. It happens in nature as well. Evolution is driven by organisms reproducing more than other organisms of the same species.

Not everyone who is alive has a meaningful life.
Or: life has no meaning unless you make it.
4
u/throwawaychubbymilk 5h ago
Absolutely not - us non-breeders do other things that indirectly help our species dominate. We care for the extended family unit, smooth over squabbles, and help raise the next generation well - because when daddy's out hunting and mommy's gathering and grandma is dead, infertile/asexual/homosexual auntie/unc/etc. is what makes the system work.
I could be wrong, I'm regurgitating some half remembered white papers on why dedicated homosexuality exists across species.

I would replace "procreate" with "enable the success of your genetics" maybe. I remember seeing a video ("it's ok to be smart" I think) asking why elephants have grandmothers if the purpose of life is to procreate, and the grandmother elephants are to old to continue procreating. If I remember correctly the conclusion was that it enables greater success for genetics because they are able to share knowledge, protect, and watch after other members of their family, thereby improving the likelihood that those members of the family with be successful in procreation.
0
u/jalintorei 9h ago
They should mate with other people who can't procreate or in-service theyr companions to procreate without them.
2
u/Sallowjoe 9h ago
Oh we can and do definitely argue with that, and it's definitely wrong.
Procreation is necessary to continue forms of life but that doesn't make it the purpose of those forms of life. This is mistaking an enabling condition of having a purpose at all for the purpose itself.
In other words, sex is a means of procreating, procreating is a means of continuing a form of life, but neither are therefor (per se) the "end" of that form of life in a "final cause" sense.
Treating it as why we're here is like saying "We're here to keep ourselves here". It's basically vacuous.
And I would stress form of life, not just life in general, which doesn't require procreation to continue - if life needed life to give birth to it we'd have a paradox.

Biologists say reproduction is the meaning of life. Technically they're not wrong
6
u/pellyenjoyer 8h ago
Maybe for lower forms of conscienceless. Humans can create things other than babies
3
u/Dascewlm8 4h ago
What purpose does it serve to create things if no one reproduces?
-1
u/pellyenjoyer 4h ago
Making art itself is rewarding. I dont make art because someone might see it. I make art because I like to.
All existence is going to be gone one day. What’s the point of doing anything?
2
u/AcidicSwords 4h ago
yes but at the end of the day everything we create in some way ties back to the continuation of existence or making existence bearable, and having kids is really just "existence of humankind"
1
u/pellyenjoyer 4h ago
That’s not true. I could create something that could specifically make existence worse.
1
u/Big_Iron_Cowboy 5h ago
Yeah I’ve created some things in my life, but nothing as amazing as my babies

u/sirfray 8h ago
Nah the biologist is wrong because their answer just sidesteps the question. Imagine someone asks “what is the meaning of death?” and I just post a pic of someone being murdered. Same thing.
4
u/TacticalReader7 7h ago
That's a silly analogy, there's only one natural way to create life and it's via breeding. While murder is merely one of many many things that results in death.
Biologically speaking death is useful because it stops the older organisms from seizing resources that are needed for younger ones to live and procreate which stimulates evolution. Imagine if every single human that has ever lived was still alive today, it would be a mess.
1
1
u/PhilospohicalZ0mb1e 2h ago
Death was not an adaptation. It’s just a consequence of life. Nothing is indestructible. The reason organisms are mortal is the same reason machines are mortal: wear. Nothing interesting to it.
Besides, “meaning” differs significantly from “purpose”, which probably differs from “function” as well. Which everyone in this conversation is kind of missing out on.

u/fuckingthrowaway556 7h ago
Its not wrong, humans are the only creatures that have a different answer.

Philophers: super thought out, in depth explanation of the meaning of life that the average person probably wouldn't recognize.
Biologists: pass on your genes.
2
u/Size---Queen 9h ago
Biologically you are programmed via hormones to reproduce ( or just have sex)
Philosophy depending on who you read paints a picture of life it's meaning etc.... outside of sex.

Life through the lens of biology is to survive and reproduce. These are two necessities for the vitality of any living species.
1
u/Fxg120xYXDE5 8h ago
Brian here, too hung over to bother with decorum.
Google deontological ethics and come back once you've developed a thorough understanding of it, and you'll have learned a little bit about one of many philosophical concepts.
Google biological imperative, and you'll understand why a biologist's answer could least partially be summed up with that photo.

u/RattleNHum1 8h ago
Both are true. To be in love is not to be in a philosophical balance, and to find a philosophical balance, is not the same as attaining love.

The meaning of life is a necklace of pearls? Makeup and nail polish? Chewing on thumbs?

u/Craving_Suckcess 7h ago
the joke is mostly 'reproduction', which is simple and allows the inclusion of an erotic image (yes the joke is basically porn) vs the complexity of the other answer.
that being said, I don't think a biologist that stopped to examine the question would even conclude that as the 'meaning' of life. reproduction isn't even the 'purpose' of life, it's just a self reinforcing pressure that is a prominent drive by merit of the evolutionary success of the drive. Life does not 'intend' to reproduce itself any more than any aspect of a beings design is intentional, it's just that life that reproduces itself continues forward, and repeats the genetics that lead to itself being reproduced. Including the drive to reproduce.
Life doesn't have a biological goal, it's just a set of aimless processes that were refined into ones that appear pointed, via the ones not leading to successful reproduction not resulting in repetition and mutation into more complex varieties. The only way for propagation to be the 'goal' of life, is if life was created with the initial purpose of continuance. Which I don't believe it was, it was just random happenstance. Life has no inherent goal even in the biological sense, it's just that life that continues to occur continues to occur, which allows us to experience it both personally and observationaly.
1
u/Resident-Rooster2916 7h ago
Philosophers have a deeper meaning to the purpose of life. Biologists answer the question more simply, as in universal life by the chemistry definition, which prioritizes reproduction.

1
u/Actual_Law_505 7h ago
Philosophers tend to use abstract concepts. Biologist interpret in the context that nature wants us to reproduce and to avoid extinction.

Biology doesn't care what your dreams or ambitions are. Biology only cares that you're using the tools that nature has provided to survive and procreate. You didn't evolve in such a way as to make your life easier but to bust a nut successfully!

To be fair, the left side of the image is pretty unclear to me. We've got ... an x-ray of a guy doing Tai Chi, maybe? and he's like ... in the corner of an unreadable text? Or maybe a bunch of books or bricks or something? It kind of looks like text, but I can't actually see any writing. I don't ... I don't know what that means. The meaning of life is like ... fighting against books? Or something? The terrible crushing weight of our own knowledge?
Hopefully there are literally zero posters who need the right side of the image explained, but then again ... this is Peter Explains the Joke, and I'm pretty sure some of you people need instructions to remember how to breathe in the morning, so ... sex.

The meaning of life, in the biological sense, is to successfully pass your genes to the next generation. So the answer is not sex, per se, but reproduction - in the biological sense.
