Meme needing explanation Petah?
Why has 8gb ram made a resurgence again in 2026? ( according to this meme)

AI data centers caused the price of RAM to increase a lot
so havin 8GB ram is now flex in 2026

It's gotten rough, at work (tech company) we have been scavenging our old EOL servers for their ddr3 ram and finding it doesn't even fit in half our vm hosts :( now I just have a little baggie of ram on my desk I can't do anything with.

eBay it.
Put that money towards something else you need.
Never let tech sit around for too long.

Aren’t there adapters for that? Or am I oversimplifying it?

u/spine_slorper 10h ago
No not really, I'm sure you could manage something if you REALLY wanted to but it would be bad, they have different voltages, different notch places and different pin counts

u/polkacat12321 11h ago
Idk how much of a flex it is considering modern smartphones have 16

I was just sitting here thinking my phone has 12gb of ram... and my laptop had 32gb... idk what I would do with 8.

u/Accurate_Potato_8539 11h ago
Though in reality it's not. It's more like 16 is a flex where 32 used to be. Most decent laptops still pack 8 gigs.

Same. And most of the time I play games that originally released in the 90s and early 2000s.

I still play modern games (that will run on Linux) with a 1070ti lol. She ain't the best at it but she does a damn fine job for her age.

Mother of all bottlenecks (lwkey same situation, 32 gigs and a 1050 to)

u/Hot_Anybody8244 11h ago
It's running on a tomahawk b450 with a Ryzen 7 2700x and a SATA SSD 💀
I still have my old prebuilt with a 1050 in it tucked away in the closet. It comes out every now and then when I need a second rig to test some shit but it usually stays in the closet

B450 Aorus Pro\ Ryzen 9 3950X\ RTX 2080\ 1TB SSD\ 32GB\
My favourite games are Baldur's Gate 1 + 2. BG3 is basically the only new game I play ocasionally on my computer (but mostly on the PS5).\ The Settlers 2, Command amd Conquer Red Alert, Interstate' 76, Half-Life 1 and 2, Archimedian Dynasty...

I'm more impressed with gaming on linux with an Nvidia card.

u/Hot_Anybody8244 11h ago
It's actually not bad. The only hiccup I've seen is kernel level anti cheat games don't work. Anything with battleye and most with eac (easy anti cheat has a switch to enable Linux support per game, but the developers of that game have to manually turn that on. It's not the default.) but I don't play much of those anymore anyway.
As for the card, Nvidia support seems to be pretty damn good now. You can even get support for the 40 and 50 series if you're willing to fiddle fuck with an arch distro. But my 1070ti no longer gets driver updates, so I installed the drivers once which were automatically detected on Linux Mint and I've been good since.

Interesting. I always had to fight with linux when using nvidia, but my current AMD setup just works OOB. Not missing much with anticheat, anything with kernel level isnt worth playing. I certainly dont miss it.

Lmao a whopping 32 Gb of RAM so I can play Age of Empire II (1999) and Sim City 4 (2003).

I wanted to return to AoE2 at some point. Such a good game. Do you play the old version or the HD / definitive edition?

Heyy, wanna invite me to your house to hang out? I'll bring pizza! (I promise I won't steal your RAM)

Thanks to our AI Overlords, 8GB of ram is actually really good now.

u/TheOtakuAmerika 11h ago
It's not, it's just a monetary flex. 8gb is still shit. Very expensive shit.

2005-2025 is likely referring to your PC only having 8gb of RAM, while 2026 is referring to obtaining an 8gb RAM stick since prices have become insane, in that getting your hands on one is pretty good. If you manage to get two sticks of 8gb of RAM, its still pretty solid for your PC nowadays. Also, always remember that two sticks is better than one. What I mean is, a PC running on one stick of 16gb, will run worse than a PC with two sticks of 8gb.

Having 8 gigs of ram wasn't a thing back in 2005. Windows XP Pro 64-bit did come out that year, which could utilize 8 gigs, but it was not in wide use by gamers or common consumers. Windows Vista in 2007 started bringing 64-bit OS to regular consumer use with Home Premium version and going forward from that 64-bit got more and more common with each new Windows version, but it would be around 2015 when 8 gigs became the default sweet spot to have if you were doing gaming.
So the meme is pretty bad, specifically because those years really don't make any sense. Well at least the 2005 part isnt making sense

J here.
Tldr: Allowances have been made for a joke. The premise is impossible but if can work on a shorter timeline of good in 2015 bad in 2025 and good in 2026 in specific reference to DDR4 gaming ram.
Long version: There are different kinds of ram and not even DDR3 existed back in 2005, things would need to be really bad for people to go older than that. Also maybe impossible. I don't know enough about it but I think its not possible to run even windows 7 on older motherboards that use DDR2. With software evolving overtime what you would be able to run would not even open a bower so yeah not really worth bragging.
Serial Designation J out.

8gb ram before was a lot, in 2025 Microsoft was trying to push windows 11 with copilot that consumes a lot of rem, so Microsoft itself said the minimum should be 16gb.
But until then ram was cheap and got crazy expensive because of AI data centers and people can't afford it anymore
