It's fun to think you know something other people don't and it's fun to shit on people with tattoos you think are cringey, so people love to parrot it and have a little chuckle to themselves, which is its own kind of cringe.

They're originally Edo period Japanese criminal tattoos. Where they are and what they are mean different crimes. That's part of why Japan has such a negative view on tattoos.
44
u/wwaxwork 1d ago
I feel like if anyone should get a tattoo of the moment it should be the fistee not the fister. I have no idea what they could get and where but still it seems like the guy with the tattoo did not do the hard work in that situation.
→ More replies (3)10
u/EnvironmentalOwl6882 1d ago
A fistee seems less likely to substantially change their distance too, so a permanent tattoo would stay representative. A fister just needs to find a new person and their record could change far more easily, but then they've an outdated permanent tattoo of their old record to deal with.

People are weird about kink. Most of the guys I met through kink are much better about consent than most vanilla guys I've met. Might be projection from the vanilla guys tbh
832
u/TungstenOrchid 1d ago
I've had similar impressions. Awareness of dangers, and willingness to check that the other person is consenting before engaging has always been a basic courtesy in my experience.
In fact, sharing what they want, and how far they are comfortable going is for some a big part of what turns them on.
→ More replies (21)153

Was in a playroom at a gay bar the other night and the consent was adorable. “May I suck your dick?” “Will you fuck me?” All please and thank you.
26
274
u/CattusPater 1d ago
That makes perfect sense. Kink folks have spent some time thinking and talking about sexuality. They've tried different things with partners who've asked them to. They've experimented. The conversations surrounding sex are natural for them. Your average vanilla guy has a high probability of repressed trauma or religious guilt bred into them. (at least in the US)

Outside the US, I'd say it's less repressed trauma and more the fact that they want sex, they'll brag about it, joke about it, but talking about it seriously is just not the done thing, as though it would suggest they don't know what they're doing, which they find insulting. That's why they don't like discourse around consent, it suggests that not every woman they show their dick to is desperate to ride it.
85
u/yokyopeli09 1d ago
As an SA survivor I feel much safer in kink spaces where knowledge and respect of consent is spoken about upfront and often. Vanilla people can act like it's a given but then may not even be aware when they're doing something that's making themselves or their partner uncomfortable.

Reminds me about a story that was done on a concert venue operator. They said that the best crowds were always the ones for the death metal bands. Always the most polite, made sure everyone in the mosh pits were safe, they drank responsibly, and left the venue relatively clean. The worst were the indie rock and ska bands who trashed the bathrooms, threw drinks, got in fights, and tossed their trash on the ground around a trash can.
19
u/not_now_reddit 1d ago
Yes! That's part of why I love kink and kinky people. Consent is at the forefront of kink. I've found that vanilla people can be more squeamish about having those conversations, often taking it as an accusation that they would be the kind of person to violate someone's consent. But that can happen on accident through carelessness and not being in touch with how your partner is doing. There's also more of an understanding that sometimes sex needs to stop but it's nothing personal and it doesn't mean that you have to be done for the night

I remember as an undergraduate, I conducted a dramatic reading of Ann Rice's "Erotic Adventures of Sleeping Beauty" while two couples mimed the action of the book. Beauty had a scene with a male character where consent was dubious at best. (Big thematic twist was that it was his consent that was dubious.)
Everyone was fine.
But it ended with Beauty saying her wish was to serve, not be served.
And it was that, not the dubious consent, and not the flat out assault that was found elsewhere in those books, that freaked people out. Consensual preference to be in a subordinate place was too much. Forcing someone into that spot was fine, though.
It was a sobering moment.

Fisting really seems like the kind of deal where, excluding extreme examples, the recipient really needs to be on board
41
u/PastryGirl 1d ago
It takes a lot of trust and patience in order to relax enough. So yes the recipient needs to be on board, but in my experience the giver also needs to help create that bond or leap of faith to be so vulnerable.

Its marking prisoners, depending how many lines and how thicc you could tell which prison they where
24
u/TrafficDelicious4331 1d ago
It is from my understanding the large elaborate tattoos associated with yakuza came about to cover up these criminal tattoos and effectively wipe away the evidence they committed a crime
14
u/Triquetrums 1d ago
Let me cover up my criminal tattoo with this other tattoo that identifies me as part of a criminal gang. Nobody will be able to tell, I'm a genius!

Well around the time, which was the edo period that's more or less when the practice became commonplace, tattoos didn’t have the same negative connotation. In fact people whose job required working in heat or fire a lot, like smiths or firefighters, a full body tattoo was seen as basically clothing and better than just being bare skinned, but yes over time the tattoos did just end up being associates with criminals so the point became moot

Good old porn in the woods. One time my friends and I heard about a stash some other kids had talked about. We searched for a couple hours and finally found it, then moved it to another secret location in the woods. Eventually another kid found out about it from us talking and got caught by his mom while checking it out one day…. And it was gone. Such is the nature of woods porn.

I've seen different explanations depending on culture. Apparently, banding was used in the Edo period of Japan for prisoners, so in Japan they're associated with gangs.
In Western cultures, I've read that they're associated with mourning a loved one.
Honestly, I kind of hate the fisting joke as it's what people think of now seeing them when someone might actually have some kind of real significance tied to it.
