I don’t know what to make of this, and I’m genuinely curious to hear what other people think.
My grandparents on my mother’s side live in a large house in Italy. It has two separate apartments, one upstairs and one downstairs, connected by a garden.
When I was growing up, my grandparents lived upstairs, while my great-grandmother lived downstairs. She passed away when I was 18, and nobody lived in her apartment after that.
I’ve been living in France for the past ten years, but I visit my family in Italy every summer. I have a cat, and since my grandmother isn’t particularly fond of cats jumping on the furniture, I usually stay in the downstairs apartment with my cat. It’s the perfect arrangement because my cat can be a cat without upsetting my grandmother.
Or at least, it should be.
I want to clarify something before going any further: I’m not a psychic, and I don’t claim to have any special abilities. However, I’ve occasionally experienced this strange sensation throughout my life where I feel that I’m not alone. Sometimes I even get the impression of whether the presence is male or female, or whether it’s someone familiar to me. It doesn’t happen often, and I can’t explain it.
Anyway, during my stays in my great-grandmother’s old apartment, I started experiencing some genuinely unsettling things.
First, I kept waking up multiple times during the night. I already struggle with insomnia, but this was different because I would wake up hearing noises.
Sometimes, it sounded as though someone was in the kitchen. Other times, I heard footsteps and what sounded like someone running / walking upstairs.
The strangest part is that my cat would sometimes sit there meowing at the ceiling. She has never done this anywhere else, and it was particularly unusual for her.
One night, in particular, I distinctly remember hearing what sounded like someone really walking around upstairs. It was around 2 a.m.
At first, I tried not to think too much about it. Old houses make noises, after all. But that night, I experienced this horrible sensation that I can only describe as feeling that something was wrong. I couldn’t explain why, and I couldn’t identify what I felt was there. I just felt deeply uncomfortable.
So I picked up the intercom that connects the two apartments and called my grandmother.
My grandmother answered. Since insomnia runs in our family, she was awake too.
I asked her whether she had been walking around upstairs. She said no. I asked whether she had gotten up to use the bathroom. Again, no. She told me she had only just gotten up to answer the intercom.
Here’s the part that really stuck with me: the moment I called upstairs, the footsteps and running noises stopped.
I explained what I’d been hearing, and my grandmother eventually came downstairs. We made ourselves some chamomile tea and talked about it.
That’s when she reminded me of something I’d almost forgotten.
My great-grandmother used to say strange things too.
During the last years of her life, she became blind. She would sometimes insist that children were running around the house upstairs.
At the time, we didn’t think much of it. We assumed she was simply getting old.
But looking back, I’m not entirely sure what to make of it.
I work in a nursing home as a psychologist, and I’m familiar with dementia and cognitive disorders. My great-grandmother generally seemed lucid to me. She knew who I was, knew where she was, understood the date, followed the news on television, and could discuss politics and current events with me. She remembered an incredible amount of things and could hold perfectly normal conversations.
The only thing I particularly remember finding strange was her insistence that children were running around.
I remember telling her that there were no children in the house anymore. I was around 17, and I certainly wasn’t running around upstairs at night. Whenever I questioned her about it, she would change the subject and ask me about school, my friends, or ballet.
I never really connected those memories with my own experiences until my grandmother brought them up that night.
And now I can’t stop wondering about it.
Why did my great-grandmother describe the noises as children running around? Why did I hear what sounded like footsteps? And why did I have such a horrible feeling that something was there, when the sensation itself didn’t feel anything like children?
I couldn’t even identify whether the presence I sensed was male or female. I just felt that something was there, and that something wasn’t right.
My cat’s behavior made everything even stranger, although I know animals can react to sounds and stimuli that we don’t notice.
Nothing ever appeared to me. I never saw a figure or anything that I could definitively identify as paranormal. It was the noises, the sensations, and the strange similarities with my great-grandmother’s experiences that bothered me.
I also researched the house afterward, but I couldn’t find anything suggesting that something terrible had happened there.
What’s interesting is that I had occasionally slept downstairs with my great-grandmother when I was younger, and I never experienced anything unusual back then. She also never mentioned the children before she became blind, as far as I can remember.
After spending an entire month sleeping approximately four hours a night because I kept waking up to these noises, I eventually decided to stay at my parents’ house during subsequent visits to Italy. Their house is even older and larger, but I’ve never experienced anything similar there.
I haven’t wanted to sleep downstairs again.
My grandmother refuses to try sleeping there herself because she doesn’t see the point.
Part of me wonders whether I should go back and spend a night there to see whether anything happens again. Another part of me really doesn’t want to.
I’m not claiming that the apartment is haunted. I genuinely don’t know what happened, and I’m open to ordinary explanations. But the combination of the noises, my cat’s behavior, that horrible sensation, and my great-grandmother’s stories has left me with questions I can’t seem to shake.
Has anyone experienced something similar, particularly in a place where an older relative reported hearing or seeing things before them? And does anyone have any thoughts about why my great-grandmother might have described hearing children running around?
I’d genuinely like to hear your experiences and theories.
