Discussion PewDiePie is trying to distill GPT-Sol

Post image

he has been trying to build a local model by learning from GPT-Sol’s responses. He says OpenAI banned his account twice during the process. Irony is OpenAI’s own models were trained on vast amounts of information from the open web. So where do we draw the line between learning from AI and copying it?

Discussion Sir, Dario just dropped opus 5.5 and it beats GPT-6 astra at agentic coding on medium effort while being 80% cheaper… beats fable 5.1 on every benchmark… 30% faster than opus 5… and sir… they even raised the usage limits and gifted everyone a tibo style banked reset…

Discussion Account Deactivated due to Biological Research

This is pretty wild. My OpenAI account got deactivated due to what they flagged as "Prohibited Biological Use."

I'm a biology student researching agricultural improvements for U.S. crops. I asked how to legally receive beneficial bacteria from the University of Oxford through established USDA channels—bacteria my university and I had already agreed on, with zero negative effects, all under strict institutional supervision.

After appealing and submitting official research documentation and papers explaining the entire project, they upheld the decision. No real review. No chance to provide evidence.

It's frustrating. I've been loyal since OpenAI's founding, started with DALL-E when it launched. But that loyalty doesn't matter when moderation systems can't distinguish between legitimate supervised research and actual abuse.

As a college student working under extreme institutional oversight, these blanket limitations make advancing biological science unnecessarily difficulty. There's got to be a better process than this.

Anyone has any idea how to fix this?

UPDATE: Found some connections at OpenAI and they unbanned my account. I got it back. Now i have to find a way to get Trusted Access. Thanks everybody for leaving your comments and support!

Discussion Fields Medalist on the OpenAI Math Release

Hugo Duminil-Copin

Fields Medal (2022) · Professor, IHES and University of Geneva

I expected that one day we would be surpassed, and that it would happen systematically. But yesterday’s announcement hit with a force I had not anticipated. Dozens of papers deal with topics I was working on. Between results that beat you to the finish line and thousand-page proofs, I don’t even know where to look anymore.

Not a single one of the major open problems I have publicly mentioned throughout my career (whether in a talk, a lecture, an article, or even a grant proposal) was left untouched by the announcement. Everything has been claimed to be proved.

I expected to see a few of them in the list. But not all of them. Not all at once. Not with such nonchalance.

“For the glory of the human mind,” they said…

The shock is immense. I am paralysed. Tomorrow, we will find a way forward. We will rethink our profession and how we work. We are a resilient community, and I have no doubt that we will adapt. But for now, I simply don’t have the energy. I think back on all those years, all those faces… I think of my colleagues, my students… And I fear I won’t be able to find the right words.

Discussion Enjoy ChatGPT while it lasts…. the ads are coming

Post image
9.5k Upvotes

Right now ChatGPT feels “free”- but nothing on the internet ever stays free. Google didn’t invent search to be useful, they invented it to sell ads.

That same pill bottle of ads revenue is sitting on the table for OpenAI, Perplexity, Anthropic… all of them. The pressure to monetize will push them down the exact same path: ads baked right into your “answers.”

So yeah, ChatGPT looks at ads revenue like medicine. When they start swallowing it, does AI discovery just become the next surveillance machine?

(I originally posted this in r/ownyourintent. Wanted to know this sub's thoughts.)
