BJC versus KU Medical in Kansas City WWP (week-Work Program benefits)

• Upvotes

I work as a Registered Nurse at Saint Luke’s Hospital, now BJC, in Kansas City Missouri. I Have been in the Week-end program for several years. The program consist of working every week-end for a total of 24 hours per week ( 2-12 hrs shifts) and as a reward getting paid for a total of 3 shifts per week. Benefits are mediocre, not the best in regard to health care coverage, PTO benefits suck! We are only allowed 4 days of PTO during the entire year, sick days come have to come out of those 4 days. We have young children at home who get sick from time to time and surely we end up needing to take more then 4 days off in a working year.

Going on a real vacation is not even a thing for any us, unless it is a short four or five days trip you take during the week days. After BJC finalized all the policies following take over Saint Luke’s Health System, a memo was sent out to the WWP nurses that the policy on call ins had been tightened to strictly four days and any call ins over that would result in getting kicked out of the program.

It truly feels like a well thought out punishment for getting paid the extra day, a fully earned reward for being at work every week- end all year long. Working every week-end is a choice that comes in my opinion with a sacrifice, we miss out all the social and family interactions when everyone gets together. The shifts are long and the day is over by the time we get back home. I understand this sacrifice comes with the choice of working every week-end, but the rigidity of the WWP policy on PTO at BJC/ Saint Luke’s is so strict is not fit for humans, we all get sick and we all should have the right to take a normal vacation every now and then.

Frankly we feel scammed on PTO benefits especially if it is true that KU Medical Center ( the competitor) WWP includes 6 days of PTO every six months, for a total of 12 days of PTO per year .

Please post to provide more information on your benefits if you work the WWP at any other health care facilities in the Kansas City Metro area. Your help is very much appreciated.

What is going on with my finger? Lime green tender spot.

I got acrylic nails done at a low down location in Roger’s park chicago. And I saw I had lot of lifting near the nail tips. They all have debris under the acrylic inverted my nail. My one finger started to hurt like a hang nail. It’s so tender that I pried off the acrylic to see what was happening. When I straighten my finger it becomes more painful. It’s tender to the touch and a bit hard due to being swollen. What is this? Green nail syndrome looks dark green.. my spot is lime green, I’ve never had pain like this. Or discoloration on my nail beds.

Please help.. it’s painful to bump into anything even lightly. When my finger touches my blanket it hurts.

Work shoes

2 Upvotes

Hi. What do you all do about your work shoes when coming home?

I used to keep the shoes at work and change them and leave it in a closet at work but now I don't have access to this closet no more.

Now I have a plastic Tupperware bin that I leave outside my front door and I put the dirty shoes into the bin before walking into the house. But in the morning I feel like it is a hassle. Walking out with slippers, change the shoes them throw my slippers back into the house. Close the plastic bin.

Also do you guys clean the bottom of your shoes with the purple wipes after your shift?

Healthcare should not depend on your zip code, income, or background — but for so many people, it still does.

I created this infographic for my school project on healthcare access because this topic hits close to home. We talk a lot about health, but not enough about the barriers that keep people from getting care: transportation, cost, language, internet access, and more.

People having to choose between health and survival. That is not just a stat, that is someones family.

Small things help: know the resources in your area, share reliable info, and connect people to care when you can.

Tip for anyone: Dial 211 or visit 211.org from any phone, anywhere in the US. It is free, confidential, and available 24/7. It connects you to your local center who can find low-cost or free clinics, dental care, prescriptions, food assistance, housing help, and more. No insurance needed to call.

What is one barrier you have seen in your community?

WOC nurses!

1 Upvotes

Hi! Are there any WOC nurses willing to answer a few interview questions for an assignment I have? I'm working on a paper about patient resources connected to my unit for my BSN. I'm an OR RN... we don't really have a direct hand in referring patients but I have sent requests for post-op ostomy education.

Even if you only feel like giving me one word answers or incomplete sentences I can work with that 😆

The WOC nurses at my hospital must be shy or too busy to respond to my emails..I get it..but my paper is due tomorrow and I'm panicking.

Please help! Even if you pick one question to answer 🙏🏾

  1. What are your credentials and role in caring for patients with new or established ostomies?

    1. How are patients typically referred to your service?
    2. What services and education do you provide?
    3. Are there eligibility requirements for patients?
    4. What barriers make it difficult for patients to access ostomy care?
    5. What barriers make patients less successful after discharge particularly disadvantaged patients?
    6. What benefits can specialized ostomy care provide?
    7. What can happen when patients don't have adequate follow up or supplies?
    8. In your experience, does providing patients with outpatient ostomy care help prevent complications, ED visits, or hospital readmissions?

Thank you wonderful Wound Care Queens-Kings-Beings out there for all you do!

- from a sequestered OR RN

Good sources to use for studying critical care material if I’m trying to work in ICU?

Which would you take??

I’m trying to decide between two California telemetry travel contracts and would love input from experienced travelers, especially anyone familiar with Stanford or Sacramento-area dignity hospitals.

About me: I’m an RN with 3 years of experience, primarily Med-Surg/Tele, with about 6 months of SICU experience now. I currently have a weekend-only staff ICU job in Alabama that pays unusually well because of weekend/night differentials, but I’m ready to leave and get back into traveling. I maintain a tax home in Alabama, so I’ll be duplicating housing expenses while in California. I also have debt I’m actively trying to pay down, so money matters, but work environment and quality of life matter a ton too.

Option 1: Stanford – Tele, nights

* 36 hrs/week
* 8 weeks
* Start date is the problem: currently looking like October 26, although I would strongly prefer November.
* I already spoke with the manager and came away feeling really good about the unit. I asked about ratios, floating, scheduling, expectations, etc., and nothing really concerned me.
* FlexCare says Stanford’s pay is based on years of RN experience. Three years is their minimum experience tier, which is where I fall. Nurses with 5+ years are being quoted around $300/ week more for the 8 week contract, so unfortunately there seems to be a pretty significant experience-based pay difference.
* It’s lower than I hoped for considering Palo Alto/Bay Area housing, but it’s only an 8-week commitment and I like the idea of having Stanford on my résumé.

Option 2: Sacramento mercy hospital – Tele, days

* 36 hrs/week
* 13 weeks
* November 10 start date
* The downside is scheduling/floating. They do not allow block scheduling. I could be floated among the five sister hospitals, may only find out about the different location 90 minutes before my shift, and could potentially be floated to another unit midshift.
* I don’t necessarily think it’s a dealbreaker, but it gave me more hesitation than anything I heard during the Stanford screening. I have worked at one of their dignity hospitals before and really enjoyed it though.
* The major advantage is that the November 10 start gives me plenty of time to give notice at my current job, arrange housing, and make the transition without rushing.
The pay is essentially the same for both around $2500…
My dilemma is basically that Stanford seems like the contract I’d rather work, but Sacramento has the start date I’d rather have. The pay on both are disappointing but I did negotiate that higher rate for the dignity hospital. It’s through med sol so with me having worked with both the agency and the hospital system previously, they agreed to raise it. My recruiter said I would be the highest paid on the unit.

Financially, I can make $2,500/week work, but because I’m maintaining my Alabama apartment and paying for California housing, this isn’t an amazing money contract for me. I’d be much more excited about Stanford if the package were closer to $3k/week and/or they could guarantee me a November start.

For those of you who have traveled for a while: Would you take the 8-week Stanford contract despite the lower-than-ideal pay and potentially rushed October start, or take the 13-week Sacramento contract for the guaranteed Nov. 10 start even with the floating/scheduling policies? Would you take neither and hold out for something better?
