Police stole from me under the pretext the alcohol with me was tramadol and they would prove it in court

The police are involved. Who do you think the real thieves and street urchins are? Yup! The same police

When TPain personally governed Lagos, he had the options to build schools, vocational centers, military barracks or correctional facilities to address the infancy of the Agbero epidemic, instead he empowered, legitimised and absorbed them into his fold to become his political foot soldiers, setting them loose upon the general populace with random taxes and fares that can only be described as "daylight robbery" while the infrastructure erected by previous administrations crumbled around Lagos.

Who created the Agberos class? Successive past and current governments.

I hate agberos as much as the next person, the question I want to pose is, where's the work?
More than anyone, I want the agbero lifestyle gone in Nigeria, because at the end of the day, hoodlums are tools, weaponised angry violent people. The truth I have come to realise is you'd tend to discover that some of them don't want that lifestyle but either they don't know better or believe that's their major value.
They believe if they aren't aggressive you'd cheat them, or steal from them and more...I have said this before and I'll say it again, some agberos/hoodlums are part of the most hardworking individuals you can find. Unfortunately the problem is circumstances and exploitation.
Until we can find a way to divert that energy, they'd always have an excuse.

Stealing from orphans is about the lowest one can stoop to no matter the situation though.

u/ADxWoLF_23 1d ago
I agree wholeheartedly, that's the lifestyle they believe in, especially when you look at their background. There's a Yoruba adage that has always rubbed me the wrong way.
The literal translation goes, "an adult is allowed to take from a child", as a Yoruba myself it has always disgusted me, the real meaning of the adage is different but what do they care, these folks have taken it the literal way. The real meaning is Those with power usually get away with doing wrong towards those without, it's not approving the actions but a caution, but like I said those who use it don't care.

Even if someone wants to be an agbero, there are still the ones with dignity. In all they do, they should leave orphanages (and children in general) out of it.

Eh, it reminds me of some random post about Mafias I read a while ago.
Maybe there were "honourable" agberos but what will happen over time as the country in general worsens and their actions accelerates that, is this. It is nothing but a predictable consequence of the actions of previous generations of agberos and Nigerians.

u/ADxWoLF_23 1d ago
I agree, no argument regarding this. Unfortunately anarchy kills morality. Either anyone of you is willing to admit it, we are in a state of anarchy. Just the mild stage

I see you point, but you also have to realize notwithstanding whether the economy is good or bad, there will still be agberos.
And it's not even about where the jobs are, it's about dignity. I've seen people with disabilities in Lagos hustling honestly, and I've seen abled-bodied men sitting around and preying for their next victims.
Its laziness, entitlement, all reward with no work.
4
u/ADxWoLF_23 1d ago
When the country is good, they'll be curbed either you believe it or not. When there's rule of law, there's job, there's housing there are working systems. Even in china there are still criminals like the Triad and Gambling rings but they don't born them well to misbehave, so I understand your point.

u/Son_of_Ibadan Oyo 1d ago
Not just rule of law, but enforcement. We all have to understand that Nigeria has laws like mad. Best believe that Nigerian electoral laws are better that the US and UK electoral laws, but Nigeria's problem is enforcement.
Its like a naughty child; you can have one million rules, but if you don't have the will to enforce only one, that child will continue to walk all over you.

Here's a typical case of sympathising with evil, and it's a dangerous thing to do. I've been hungry, I've gone door to door to beg for food and things like soap and toothpaste. I've been unemployed for almost 2 years in the past. I've trecked under the sun going from coaching centre to coaching centre telling them I could teach this and that, and many of them hired me. You know why? The pay is low, so they're always in need of tutors. Your next argument would be that many of these cancerous elements are illiterate, but I've sold peanuts. I learnt how to make it from a friend and turned it into a business. Today I'm a software engineer. I didn't turn to truancy to survive or make it in life.
There are many others who had it rougher than I did and even rougher than these agberos, but still made something out of their lives.
Yes, we live in a system that has failed us, but I will not accept it as a justification for crime. If you want to talk about our failure as a country, bring it up in another context, not here.

u/kallmemrb 1d ago
Until they start shooting them or Making them disable or crippled they won't stop .....
There was a time they were chased off the road ...they need to bring that back ...
1
u/ADxWoLF_23 1d ago
Chased off without solving the actual problem? Who are we deceiving? They'll always come back if that's the case.
4
u/kallmemrb 1d ago
If you honestly think those people are ready to work or otherwise than you don't understand them...they enjoy free money and they understand that their actions have no consequences
You see them in lekki and ajah destroy cars if you don't give them money and govt aren't doing anything
If Police or soldier had kill like 5-10 of them the rest will never stand on the road again ...
In Nigeria those Agberos only understand Force and Heavy damages ....
They have so much Belief they that they are untouchable because election is coming
2
u/Specific_Square5091 1d ago
I doubt it would stop it. Still haven’t solved underlining issue of poor job security and low wages. They would just become more violent
2
u/kallmemrb 1d ago
Question is are they ready to work ???
I lived in the North for a while and I understood why being beggars is lucrative for them with the mansions they have in the north
Same way some Agberos make over 10k daily . Some over 20k to 30k .....
Do you think those people are ready to do any work to earn 50k or 100k monthly
Agberos is a lucrative business to them
2
u/Specific_Square5091 1d ago
Bro exactly the way how quality of life is and economy is I would do the agbero lifestyle if I wasn’t blessed / lucky to be in the position I am. What they do is immoral but without fixing conditions we stuck with them
2
u/ADxWoLF_23 1d ago
Have you ever heard of carrot and stick? To discourage the ill mannered behaviour you need to create an alternative, if they now refuse to take the alternative which is the carrot, give them the stick.

u/kvro_maX 1d ago
Lol you don't know they don't want to leave the agbero work because it pays them and lets them live their lifestyle
2
u/klas-klattermus 1d ago
I concur. Here in Sweden we have social welfare, free schools and funding for those wanting to start a small business and very little violent crime. It still exists of course because there will always be lifestyle criminals, but a lot of scoundrels will be too comfortable with some drinking money and food to commit crime. Of course Nigeria probably have some other issues to figure out before trying that, but there are indeed other solutions than killing all the criminals (especially since let's be honest, a small time criminal may rob an orphanage but a corrupt politician can starve a thousand children to death to enjoy another new car)
1
u/Initial_Yellow8390 1d ago
They should rob a store if they want carton of noodles. Not traumatize orphans and lower their chances of having return helpers I'm all for crime but at some point is it really for food or they just want to show their "power"

There are many factories here where they can choose to work and earn a decent living, don't bring that "where's the work" excuse here.

u/ADxWoLF_23 1d ago
Please dead this narrative, abeg. Many factories my foot

u/Tall_Tourist2192 16h ago
Cmon now I know this would be anecdotal, but many years ago when I lived in Lagos after NYSC, I had this plumber that was also a street guy.
Man would prefer free money than to go work. And he was quite good, but I almost had to beg him anytime I needed work done.
These folks prefer that fast money, and no one is putting them in jail for vagrancy
1
u/ADxWoLF_23 15h ago
Again look at the system, create one that actually discourages this and gives justification to punish them.

My friend, there is no justification for stealing from ORPHANS! What kind of sick, twisted individuals targets the weakest and most vulnerable people in their community?
2
u/Several-Flounder8093 20h ago
Okay so why can't they go harass politicians? They are harassing an orphanage ffs. Have you seen how Nigerian orphanages are? They need any support they can get and yet grown men are taking from them? Come on don't defend this.

u/SEELE007 1d ago
All these people in the comments saying “Oh how horrible”, as if this is not the government work. Thousands of able bodied youths not being out to work by the Government, and lack of social net or a good job market and high unemployment. Obviously all this people want to do is survive.
Fuck APC and their cronies

u/First_Comedian901 1d ago
So those of us suffering and not stealing, we have 2 heads bah?
Bad government or no bad government; it's despicable to steal from orphans. They should be dealt with.

Agbero is the only thing Tinubu did for Lagos as governor, it's he's only accomplishment in Lagos and how he's retained control of Lagos even after leaving office. Every other state dey learn work from Lagos when it comes to Agbero. To target and harass an orphanage is just pure evil and wouldn't happen anywhere else but in Lagos it's just normal.

u/jcurrency33 1d ago
Any government that isnt terrified of having millions of young able-bodied, desperate men idly roaming the streets, is a deeply unserious government.
I am currently in VI, and the amount of seemingly idle urchins I have observed roaming the streets right outside of billion naira properties is insane.
Its like the elite are sealed away in their own bubbles, not realizing that that young fellow you see at intersections hailing you for money today can easily, under different circumstances, be pointing a gun at your face tomorrow.

u/Longiiicho 1d ago
This is what our government has turned Nigerians to. Beggars, and criminals that can and will rob the dead if possible.
2
u/Alkedi44 Lagos 1d ago
Lagos State government is unwilling to do what it takes. They need these young bodies and to cross them would be to lose a significant thuggery force ahead of the election

u/kvro_maX 1d ago
These agberos can't be touched, na your government boys be that. They remit to someone who remits to someone that remits to the local government.

I’m so tired of the entitlement of street urchins in this country.
