📆 He entered the shelter as an owner surrender on 9/27/2026 and has now been placed on the Major Medical Orange Alert.

✦ NOTES: Kurama is described as friendly and relaxed with children, playful and gentle with adults, and gentle with children. His owner reports that Kurama can be dog selective. He is reportedly tolerant of having his food bowl handled, being bathed, and being brushed. Kurama is partially potty trained and knows the commands sit, calm, and down. His owner describes him as a big-hearted good boy.

🩺 Medical Notes

1. Muscle atrophy is more severe on the right pelvic limb than the left pelvic limb.

Right pelvic limb to touching lameness, palpable possible complete dorsal luxation left pelivc limb, luxated patella left and right pelvic limbs

1. Scrotum has a very then layer of erosion due to abnromal gait causing the right pelvic limb to rub on the scrotum.

2. • X-rays are available upon request

These findings are concerning, but they do not automatically mean his condition is untreatable or that he cannot have a good quality of life. He is still a young puppy who deserves a thorough medical evaluation and a fair opportunity for treatment, rescue, or placement.

Look at these happy, handsome faces! Meet Gideon (A595892) and Hotchner (A595893)—two incredible, playful, friendly, energetic, and deeply loving Shepherd boys who urgently need a home right now!

Tragically, these sweet boys are out of time. They are on the urgent exit list at the San Bernardino City Animal Shelter with an absolute final deadline TODAY, October 12th at 2:00 PM PDT! Adopters or fosters are needed IMMEDIATELY to save their lives!

Gideon and Hotchner were brought in together back in mid-July after being found running around a park. Outside in the play yards, they come alive—splashing in water pools, running around joyfully, and showing everyone how fun and affectionate they truly are!

⚠️ UNDERSTANDING SHELTER REALITY:

To understand a shelter dog's behavior, please recognize that a municipal shelter is NOT a rescue, boarding facility, or doggy daycare. Dogs are confined 23.5 hours a day in small, windowless cells on bare concrete floors without beds, blankets, or soothing toys. They endure relentless noise—constant barking, shouting, and metal doors slamming. Forced multi-dog kenneling without proper socialization and unorganized "open feeding" creates overwhelming fear and competition, naturally triggering defensive instincts. With only ~20 minutes of daily yard time, these extreme conditions push loving dogs to react out of pure panic and stress.

Gideon and Hotchner have endured months in these harsh conditions and desperately need loving homes where they can decompress, feel secure, and be treated as best friends! They can be adopted together or separately to safe, loving homes.

Bio

This calm and gentle 11‑year‑old senior is at risk due to severe periodontal disease with sinusitis in the left nares, a Grade IV heart murmur, and cataracts. Despite his medical challenges, he is an incredibly sweet, easy‑to‑handle old man who mostly sleeps and enjoys quiet company. He doesn’t walk on leash but leans into your presence with a soft, trusting energy. He never barked once during evaluation and remained peaceful throughout. He deserves a safe, loving place to rest and receive the care he needs.

10/10: Pet has been prescribed Doxycycline for 28 days as part of our new heartworm therapy. Pet is to go home with remaining Doxycycline prescribed.

RX: Doxycycline 100mg Tabs – 10mg/kg(Round down) BID x 28 days.

DX: Chemisry Profile/CBC=Nonregenerative Anemia; Total RBC count 4.73 (5.65-8.87); HCT=30.7% (37.3-61.7); Hgb=10.5 (13.1-20.5); Elevated Total WBC=21.82 (5.05-16.76); Neutrophilia; Monocytosis; Eosinophilia; Hyperglobulinemia; Remaining labwwork within normal limits.

A: Severe periodontal disease with sinusitis in the left nares; Grade IV heart murmur; cataracts; possible cognitive dysfunction syndrome

P: TX: Clindamycin (150mg/ml) .28cc SQ

RX: Clindamycin 25mg 1.5T BID 10 days

Needs to have dental workup at a full service animal clinic.
