Discussion I’ve watched Jayden Daniels play for four years and the reason he didn’t throw it away was to protect his completion percentage and QBR.
He rarely spikes or throws the ball away. He’d much rather tuck it and run when a play blows up.
He’s extension eligible in the offseason and GMs use these stats to suppress salaries in negotiations. Just look at how CJ Stroud vs Nick Caserio is playing out in Houston.

After the game he said it felt good to get back to his normal form. That’s a yikes from me, even though I like him. He should have been so angry at himself, but he didn’t seem to be at all. I guess they are just used to losing, idk.

u/Relevant-Site-2010 8h ago
Can’t believe JR had the foresight to pull that move so many years earlier just to show respect for JD

The whole team just lost track of time, everything took longer than they thought, nobody noticed they didn't have enough time to clock 2 plays and they cut the headset off when the play clock gets that low. It was just a stupid mistake by a defensive coach, new OC and a QB who didn't pay enough attention.

I wish Brady was the one commentating that game lol

u/matt-is-sad Detroit Lions 8h ago
My favorite part of Brady commentating is hearing him try so hard not to completely lose his shit whenever a QB does something dumb

Wish we had Manning and his guys watching it. Love seeing legends lose their shit at players being dumbasses

u/booponthenoggin 8h ago
No you don’t, he’d still be ranting about it. In point of fact when you changed the channel you’d be surprised to discover he was ranting on that channel as well.

Daniels thought they there was timeout left. Look at how non chalant he is getting out of the pile

Incorrect.
Jayden laid down on the field once he realized they couldn't win by 5

Does spiking the ball hurt stats?

u/TheDufusSquad New England Patriots 9h ago
Would have dropped his career completion percentage from 65.995% to 65.906%. Winners don’t accept a 0.09% dropoff.

Yeah it’s an incompletion. A spike works mechanically because it’s the same as spiking the ball in the dirt on a normal pass play. It’s not grounding because technically there are players in the area as well as we all know what you’re doing so would be dumb to be a penalty.
Same for kneeling. It’s the same as if you handed the ball off and the running back fell down.
Completely legit plays that have came from within the rule book that “feel” different due to their situations but fits in the rules.
5
u/Technical_Customer_1 7h ago
There’s actually just a special rule for spiking, it’s not because there are players in the area.
2
u/BlenderTheBottle 5h ago
Oh I legit did not know that. My dad always said it’s a legit play that we gave a special name and I guess I never fact checked the old man!

In the NFL yes. Kneel-downs hurt player rushing stats too.
In college those count as team incompletions and team rush stats, as well as a few other situations (e.g. a punter tries to pick up a low snap but his knee hits the ground).

How do you not know the situation at that stage of the game. That’s failing at the most basic of concepts in football
-1
u/Hodler_caved 8h ago
The asinine play call didn't help. There was no time to huddle up if you're running a play, as we saw.
5
u/Old_Barracuda_536 3h ago
If you can't run a play from huddle with 45 seconds, you deserve to lose.
2
u/Hodler_caved 3h ago
Agreed.
They called a play which required substitutions. 13 seconds on the clock when it was snapped. Clown show.
5
u/GuitarVast8752 5h ago
Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson pulled this all the time too. They’d rather get sacked for two than throw an incomplete.
When you start looking at stats that factor in these stat padding behaviors, they look noticeably worse.
For example, running for 3 on a passing down is objectively a failure and if reflected in the stats it looks really bad
1
u/Statalyzer 1h ago
True but without watching it, it's hard to tell; sometimes there just isn't a good place to throw the ball, and 3 is better than 0.

3
u/DorguHitsDingers 8h ago
Honestly it wouldn’t even surprise me. I’ve noticed a lot of QBs as of late running out of bounds taking a 1-2 yard loss instead of just throwing it away

u/eddiestarkk New York Giants 4h ago
Even the wide receivers weren't hurrying back. Or maybe they thought he threw it away.

Maybe a younger Rodgers. Old-man Rodgers will dirt the ball for literally no reason

Washington is a mess. They are old AF and don't even have a great cap situtation. Its one of those least likely to succeed teams.
Won't deny the talent tho.

he isn't alone. same reason watson ran it on 4th and 11 to end the game. no shot of getting a first down but didn't want a 50/50 ball that might get intercepted (or, just maybe, get a first down to keep cleveland's hope to win alive).

Fucking up having a bad record and having a elbow made of a 1 year olds knee cartilage.

u/gogoheadray 7h ago
This is absurd. JD5 throws the ball away all the time. His big issue when he first came into the league was he was always trying to never make a negative play. That’s why he always held onto the ball and would rarely throw it away. Thats not the case this year.
0
u/JadarianPryce Rob Lowe 7h ago
Brother we’re saying the same thing

u/gogoheadray 6h ago

Bumbling away the win to preserve your completion % for a bigger extension.
It's a galaxy brain negotiation move only Reddit could think of.

You might be right but you know what stat gets you paid the most in this league? Wins.

I mean, I agree. I am speculating but I’ve also watched a lot of his game. I think he just has to grow up and get some more experience.

You obviously haven’t watched the tape if you missed week 1 against Philly, he threw the ball away plenty there
