Discussion Amazing How The Vikings Are Not Being Discussed As Top Super Bowl Contendors
By virtue of having far and away the best defense in the league they are contenders. On that foundation alone they are top level contenders. If you allow fewer points than anybody else, you are on that basis alone legitimate Super Bowl contenders.
The last 3 Super Bowl Champions all had super elite defenses. We haven't seen a team win the Super Bowl without an elite defense since 2022, but that team had all time great Quarterback play.

u/OkProfessional6077 Detroit Lions 10h ago
The last 3 Super Bowl champions didn’t have massive Question Marks at QB.
TBD on Kyler and the Vikings on that front, but they definitely have a Championship D.

u/Elbeske Minnesota Vikings 10h ago
Darnold and Hurts are a blueprint that you don’t need an absolutely elite QB to win a Super Bowl if your defense and supporting cast are elite

Yeah just be a top 5 defense in the history of the NFL and you can trot out whoever at QB
10
u/octopusmonkey01 10h ago
I mean to be fair the Vikings are on that kinda pace this year. Not saying we’ll maintain it for sure but it’s not out of the question

just be a top 5 defense in the history of the NFL
Ya know it's funny that you say that

u/braumbles San Francisco 49ers 10h ago
Eh, darnold was the weak link for the Hawks and he managed to be safe with the ball for their run. Look at him this year.
1
u/alphawealthy 9h ago
he threw for 4000 yards, 25 TDs and has a passer rating of almost 100. that’s one hell of a weak link
7
u/braumbles San Francisco 49ers 9h ago
Ignoring the 20 total turnovers.
3
u/alphawealthy 9h ago
you take the good with the bad. he’s certainly not an all pro caliber QB but he was above average in 2025

u/kingchivo New York Jets 9h ago
Tbf to darnold, their run game is almost non existent. Not too many teams whod succeed with that dynamic. Seahawks def regretting paying shaheed over walker

Like the 5 game win streak to end the season last year where we only allowed 10ppg and beat the Lions with negative 9 total passing yards?

Yalls defense has been incredible the last 15 games or so. QB question marks are real though.

Maybe this year is different. It would honestly be fun to watch the Vikings be in the mix late in the year or relevant in the playoffs.
A vikings perfect season watch would be wild to watch

Last year they won 9 games with far worse qb play. The defense was good but not this level good. They are #1 in most categories on defense.
The offense needs to improve but the vikes haven't been all that healthy either.

Except for the games that they were forced to be on the field, they ironically put up more points than the other team did, but this is actually not REAL.
3
u/spondgbob 10h ago
They haven’t played any really good teams yet. Green Bay, Bears when losing Caleb, TB is a mess, Miami is just bad, and then New Orleans, who are good but not great.
Combine with is with Kyler Murray or Carson Wentz at QB and it just isn’t looking like a major threat. Have to wait until what they look like against Buffalo or San Francisco

u/ka1ri Minnesota Vikings 10h ago
You do realize caleb played 90% of the game right? Oh btw our 3rd stringer started

Also, you do realize that Caleb was likely going to score on the play he pulled his hammy on right? That would have been a TD for the Bears and a W.

I think this, along with the historically bad offense so far, are the main question marks. Feels a bit like when the Vikings had an amazing record but a negative point differential a few years back. Everyone was skeptical and, sure enough, they got knocked out by Daniel Jones.
This year isn't that, and the Vikings have a SB caliber defense so far. If the offensive performance we saw from gave five continues-ish against some tougher teams (the reason they're not #1 in the NFC right now is their SOS is quite low), I think people will start believing.
Not that it matters. Go win the SB and make everyone eat crow!

Tbf you’re talking about the Vikings
7
u/Elbeske Minnesota Vikings 10h ago
This is the real answer, everyone, fans included, have been bamboozled by the Vikes too many times recently to buy in to 5-0
1
u/Friendly-Profit-8590 10h ago
Yeah. I mean if the Minneapolis miracle only gets you through the divisional round they’re gonna need multiple acts of god to get to the Super Bowl.
1
u/LawComfortable8087 Green Bay Packers 2h ago
Look no further than the 03 and 16 vikings, started 6-0 and 5-0 and missed the playoffs. Every once in a while a not great team will start very hot, no one buys it, and by the end of the season everyone was proven right not to buy in.
1
u/midwesttransferrun Chicago Bears 10h ago
Wait long enough and if they keep winning then they’ll join the convo. It’s week 5, talk right now means absolutely nothing about the post season
2
u/Legitimate_Ad_7822 New England Patriots 10h ago
Because they will face teams that are good on both sides of the ball in the playoffs and they will lose.
2
u/GoVikingsGuy 10h ago
Beat San Fran in a few weeks and we can discuss playoffs. Until then this is a median playoff team likely to exit in 2nd round.
2
u/PoeSyeDun Buffalo Bills 10h ago
Probably because Week 1 always seems to be a fluke for a lot of teams (Packers), they beat the Bears but that was 9-3, not extremely impressive. Then they beat the Bucs, Dolphins, and Saints, all pretty shitty teams rn.
They play the Colts, Lions, Bills, Packers (again), and 49ers in the next window of games. If they escape with 3 wins, then they’ll be considered a contender or pretender.
Just the way the schedule for them has shaken out this year.
2

yes beat up on the bunk fins. the rain soaked bears and they child at QB acted like he stepped on a fuckin landmine with a hamstring strain. the packers are not good and one dimension offense. the saints a bit better but also have no run game. lastly Tampa that one is not the best either.
so I can kick my little sister's ass but I wouldn't brag about it.

Vikings are what the Texans were last year. Defense is playing great, but you have to figure it out on offense.

u/somepersonyoumayknow Detroit Lions 10h ago
I like KOC as a coach and hate the fact he’s in the division. But at what point do people start talking like this team’s success is only because of Flores the way people talked about Ben Johnson with the Lions.
1
u/Swimming-Discount-41 10h ago
It seems like Flores great defense schemes kill incompetent processors and good processing qb’s aren’t taken out of the game the same way
1
1
1
u/Public-Grapefruit-29 10h ago
Because they can't fucking score. Elite defense or not you still lose if you score fewer points. You need to at least be able to score reliably which the vikings cannot. Plus our defense is healthy I wouldn't bet on it staying that way.
1
1
u/gachzonyea Detroit Lions 10h ago
Now I’m a lions fan so it could be somewhat bias, but I do feel their offense is flawed and the defense while good is really capitalizing on blitzing and confusing bad olines or young and bad qbs and it will look different against teams or qbs more able to expose heavy blitz
1
u/Ant10102 10h ago
Need to see them play seattle, niners, pats, Detroit, and buffalo this year to have any confidence in their playoff potential. Can they keep up with elite teams/coaches with just an elite defense
1
u/Diligent-Chance8044 Green Bay Packers 10h ago
Brian Flores has a blitz rate over 50% no other defense up to the point this was recorded has blitzed to that extent. Yesterday 90%, that defense is going to live and die by how opponents deal with an overwhelming number of rushers. Flores is bringing the heat because he needs to anything given up by that team means the offense can not recover.
1
u/sickostrich244 San Francisco 49ers 10h ago
It's still very early in the season and they have only beaten one good team.
1
u/Mr_SlimC 10h ago
Did you forget the Houston Texans last season? Arguably a similar level defense and Stroud held them back. I’m sorry but Murray and Wentz or whoever will have to step it up a lot more in order for them to be in any serious conversations. Bottom offense that didn’t score a TD in nearly 7 quarters. Can’t win high level games like that I’m sorry

1
u/SuperSaiyanBen Miami Dolphins 10h ago
Look, I hope they keep it up, and I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t see that Defense holding up to the grind and wear-n-tear of an NFL season. That Blitz rate is insane right now, but it’s only a matter of time before those bodies start breaking down.

Is it? The team has looked bad offensively and they've yet to have a signature win that makes you think they could go to the Super Bowl. Not to mention the years and years of implosion the team has presented. No reason to believe this will keep up.

1
u/TimeRater 10h ago
I think its fair. Losing to some random team is not what makes you a contender. If they beat the team's they should beat at the beginning of the season then we can talk.

1
u/NudeBeachEnthusiast Seattle Seahawks 9h ago
The D is obviously very legit, but the O?? Who is their best win so far anyways?
1
u/JablesMagicBoom Detroit Lions 9h ago
2 years ago they started 5-0, ended the season 14-3, but lost the division to Detroit, then lost to the Rams 27-9 in the wild card. That team had the QB that won the Super Bowl last year and this team has Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz. I imagine at least some of these things factor into people's decision to not view the Vikings as a legit contender after another 5-0 start.
1
u/JiveChicken00 Philadelphia Eagles 9h ago
If Kyler keeps playing like he just did, they’ll be discussed soon enough.
1
u/Some_AV_Pro Mr. Irrelevant 9h ago
Based on this season, and I think 5 games is enough to base on this season, I have 4.5 real contenders:
1) 49ers
2) Jags
3) Chiefs
4) Vikings
???) Seahawks
1
1
u/SteelSecutor 9h ago
This works in the Vikings favor. If the rest of the NFL underestimates them like the media is, they will be a force to reckoned with, disorganized offense or no. That defense buys a lot of advantages most teams would kill for.
1
u/IllustriousRow9790 9h ago
So NE last season was a total disaster team with an easy schedule but MIN gets to be a superbowl favorite? I’m a NE/MIN fan but this feels unfair lol. They gotta be better first.

The offense needs to be better than one game. Up until Sunday, Will Reichard was the team’s leading scorer and it wasn’t close

1
u/NoWayBro44 Pittsburgh Steelers 9h ago
I don’t have a ton of confidence in the Vikings defense remaining elite long enough to make a serious playoff run. They don’t have many (or really any) serious stars on defense.
1
u/ChipmunkSuch4907 9h ago
it’s not crazy. they have no qb confidence.
it’s the classic start 9-0 team that ends up being a wild card exit

But if it’s just “why not the Vikings” having a clear cut and recognizable QB is a sales tool and marketing piece for the league. All this back and forth with McCarthy has been amusing but it’s made the Vikings look really bad.

Then towards the end of the season he’ll be called Kyler “The Schedule” Murray.

Their last 3 opponents have an combined record of 2:13. Yes they are 5:0. Yes they have a great defense. But that offense will need to make a jump if you really want to have a chance at the chip. Houston last year had a great defense, but their QB shit the bad in the playoffs. So you need at least a good QB.

Considering Minnesota does have the NFCN third place schedule I’m hesitant about getting overhyped like NE fans were last year.
But in general Minnesota isn’t a blue chip franchise. They could be IN the Super Bowl this season and in the pregame the talking heads would 100% say things like “I know Buffalo isn’t in this game but Josh Allen is a far better QB than Kyler Murray”
Or
“If ever there was a year to have a crossover team like they do in the CFL it would be this year. This 12-5 KC team is looking good”
Or
“Somehow the Minnesota Vikings made it this far without a player like Myles Garrett at DE”
They could literally be #1 seed in the NFC and the weekly power rankings might have them in like 12th place

It’s 2023 all over again. A .500 team over performing and obtaining a better record than they actually are. Will get stomped in the playoffs again. Vikings are not a legit Super Bowl threat which is why no one is talking about them as such

u/TennisArmada 10h ago
They have no depth at RB, WRs are injured, and you have Kyler Murray! All these wins turn into losses in the 2nd half of the yr, the football gods always do this. Check Tampa from last yr or Green Bay, bad football catches up to you sooner rather than later.
