Shit Posting The Drake Maye Paradox
To determine if a team is good you simply must see how they perform against Drake Maye.
If a team loses to Drake Maye, that team is ass.
If a team wins against Drake Maye, Drake Maye is ass.
It’s very simple.

If a team is on Drake Maye’s schedule, it’s the easiest strength of schedule ever.
Not good for teams playing the Patriots, because he only beats bad teams.

-11
u/familybalalaikas Jacksonville Jaguars 11h ago
The Jags have a pretty good track record of getting to the AFCCG when we do actually make the playoffs. That just doesn't happen that often
I was moreso referring to the fact that the Jags have already made Maye look like the worst QB in the league this year so Maye is not in fact coming for the Jags. If they meet in the playoffs, it'll probably be in Jacksonville, and I would not be worried.

He's a young QB going through ups and downs. He had a breakout year last season and now teams have new tape on him, so he has to adjust his game. This is incredibly common in NFL history, but for some reason if a young QB struggles for a few weeks we immediately call them a "bust."
23
u/Andurhil1986 New England Patriots 11h ago
This year has been incredible for that phenomenon league wide. 1st couple weeks, every winner was going to the Super Bowl, every loser was a washed up fraud. I saw a post where someone said Aaron Rodgers was never elite. This is the year of bipolar fans.
7
u/HolographicHeart Jacksonville Jaguars 11h ago
Social media has ruined sports discourse as it's become commonplace to just shit on every QB that doesn't throw for 300 and multiple TDs every week.

It's also just the first 4 weeks of the season are so wonky because there is no longer a functional preseason in the NFL. I always think of Trent Dilfer. Well coached teams don't emerge until week 5.

Great point. There’s only a few Qb’s that were good right from the get go and stayed good/great through the next couple years. Mahomes and Burrow come to mind but Burrow is a stretch because of injuries. Before that. Big Ben? Many of the greats had some horrible seasons early in their careers.

u/FloatingMarbles Cincinnati Bengals 11h ago
People saying Drake maye is ass need to get a grip on reality. He was second in mvp voting last year (and imo should have won it) and is absolutely elite with the ball and has great mechanics. Easily a top 10 qb in the league rn and it’s not close
7
u/Gummy-Worm-Guy New England Patriots 9h ago
No you don’t understand it was just an easy schedule; every team that gets a last place schedule goes on to win 17 games and make it to the Super Bowl
4
u/FloatingMarbles Cincinnati Bengals 7h ago
Lmao. These people talking bout some schedule need to realize that an nfl team, no matter how bad it is, is a PROFESSIONAL team with athletes getting paid millions. It’s not like college where you can pay a school to play a team of walk one and steam roll them.
2
u/ChucksnTaylor 7h ago
I say this as a die hard NE fan. Those first 3 weeks warranted criticism. He was making mistakes that were completely out of character and suggested maybe something had gone terribly wrong. He wasn’t just being let down by the rest of the team, he was making it look like he didn’t understand the game.
I was holding my breath and hoping it was an aberration, but I was definitely worried. And I wasn’t wrong to worry, he legitimately didn’t look good. And now he returned to from which is great. But it doesn’t mean those earlier concerns were uncalled for.
2
u/FloatingMarbles Cincinnati Bengals 5h ago
Yeah for sure but 3 weeks doesn’t define a guy. I’m just saying I’m sick and tired of these people talking about some “meatball maye” or “Drake the schedule maye” bullshit, acting like he didn’t carry his team to the Super Bowl last year.
18
u/SuchInstances New England Patriots 11h ago
I just found the parallel narratives surrounding Darnold and Maye in the playoffs last year so damn hilarious.
People were praising Darnold as an example of why QBs shouldn’t be written off so quickly…
While simultaneously writing off Maye — the league’s youngest starter, coming off an MVP-level season better than any Darnold ever had — because he wasn’t immediately great against top-5 defenses in the playoffs while throwing to Diggs and Hollins behind a crappy O-line.

He’s not the sharpest tool in the shed, but the man is a very solid QB. Everyone has a bad game now and then.
5
u/Brief-Increase1022 10h ago
Yeah, I don't know if you can call it, "a bad game" so much as, "helmed a stretch of dogshit football". He wasn't great in the playoffs last year, or the SB. You can forgive that in my opinion, since he's so young. That's a ton of pressure.
Starting off this year the same way, it was tough to have any kind of optimism, however. He looked scared as fuck out there.
6
u/cookiesarenomnom New England Patriots 10h ago
This is his 3rd season in the league and he is STILL the 2nd youngest starting QB only after Dart, who is currently out for the season. So he's technically the youngest. He's a baby. He needs grace to grow and learn which apparently no one has the patience for.
0
u/Brief-Increase1022 10h ago
I completely agree. However, he started out OK, then became pretty good, then became mediocre as hell.
Towards the end of last season, he threw the football like he forgot to pull the chicken breast out of the freezer, and his Mom was pulling into the driveway after a double shift. Pure panic.
3
u/cookiesarenomnom New England Patriots 10h ago
I honestly think it was panic. Again he's so young. He entered the NFL draft early. Bo Nix has something like 30 games more experience than Maye. I think it was just a deer in headlights situation all playoffs. He was probably like, I am no where near ready for this, but I don't have a choice. And I can't blame the guy for that. Can you imagine having to lead a super bowl team at 23? I would have crumpled into the fetal position under the bench at that age.
1
u/Brief-Increase1022 9h ago
Same. That's pressure cooker shit, for real. I've gotten up to some wild, high pressure shit before. It also wasn't televised to the entire nation. With close ups.
3
u/Snoo_11942 10h ago
When he’s playing well he looks like a top 4-5 qb in the league. I would describe him as a player with potential to be a perennial mvp candidate if he can be consistent. That’s very different from “very solid”, but maybe we’re both biased in different directions.

15
11
u/rileysilva01 11h ago
Not really. There’s guys who literally can’t function sometimes. Through 4 weeks he had the 6th best epa/play disregarding turnovers. Obviously the turnovers were him playing bad but on a down to down basis he was still fine. He’s always going to be a little turnover prone just because of how he plays but the turnover rate was always going to come down from where it was weeks 1-3.
1
u/familybalalaikas Jacksonville Jaguars 11h ago
wtf kind of stat is "EPA/play disregarding turnovers"
6
u/rileysilva01 10h ago
A very commonly used one. Which is why they have a button that say “disregard turnovers”. Turnovers usually account for less than 5% of dropbacks yet drastically affect epa (which it should) so people like to see how qbs play the other 95% of their dropbacks.
-6
u/BillMurraysTesticle Detroit Lions 11h ago
Saying "disregarding the turnovers" is like saying Josh Allen isn't very good if you ignore all of the touchdowns.
9
u/Emperor_Gourmet New England Patriots 11h ago
No its not, Josh allen is still very good when not including his touchdowns, they just make him better. Inversely, Drake was playing relatively well outside of some boneheaded turnovers which were outliers. Once his turnovers return to his average, his play rebounded significantly. It’s not hard to understand.
1
u/rileysilva01 10h ago
No it’s not because I know the other 90% of Josh Allen’s plays he’s also very good because I actually watch the games
3
u/cookiesarenomnom New England Patriots 10h ago
He's baby Josh Allen. Allen's highs are fucking awesome and his low games are painful to watch. Allen has been around a lot longer and he's been able to lessen those lows a lot. I hope Maye in a few years can do the same. He's still very young. There are college QBs older than him.

You’re right, no one said the Raiders defense was good before the game.
Even if someone did say that, the Raiders defense ceased to be good once Drake Maye beat them, and they retroactively have always been ass.
-1

I mean the raiders defense was good against dolphins and chargers and has given up 27 or more to saints , chiefs, and pats.
Pats offense was bad against Seattle, Pittsburgh, and jags. Good against the 2 lesser defenses in Buffalo and raiders
8
u/Aegisurge New England Patriots 11h ago
But I thought 1st in takeaways, 1st in forced fumbles, 4th in sacks, and an allowed average passer rating of 85 was gonna be a big problem for Drake Maye 🤔

Do fans really think there is that large of a gap between a good and a bad NFL defense? Not the best and the worst, a generally good vs a generally bad defens. So much so That a guy can go from averaging 0 TDs and 2 TOs per game to averaging 4 TDs and 1 TO per game?
What actually happened is that his confidence got destroyed and the offense apparently used the first 3 weeks as a preseason. I’m not saying he’s going to keep putting up 400 yards and 5 TDs, but even against good defenses moving forward he’s not always going to be held out of the end zone and commit multiple turnovers.
Even last year he played 6 of the 10 defenses that had a positive EPA on the season. In those games he completed 62% of his passes for 8 yards per attempt, 7% TD%, and 3% INT%. Thats damn good.
If you take his numbers against those top 10 defenses and average them out over a full season, he would have had 3900 passing yards, 34 TDs, and 14 INTs.
1
u/gachzonyea Detroit Lions 11h ago
Yes there can be a large gap between a good and bad nfl defense. I watch a really bad one every week lol. Lions make bad or average qbs look good all the time.
I like drake maye and think he’s a good qb I do think there are some legit criticisms of him in regards to playing more difficult teams or defenses but some of that is more patriots roster and coaching issues than just simply drake maye schedule merchant
1
u/TheDufusSquad New England Patriots 11h ago
There can be, but it’s not at all like people are describing in this thread. The teams he played last year were largely average on defense. The main criticisms against him shouldn’t have anything to do with quality of opponent, but more his fumbling and his tendency to try and force plays when there’s nothing there.
He’s a good QB and he’s largely looked good against all levels of competition. He’s not immune to off weeks or questionable mistakes. He’s also not playing 14 games against the 3 worse defenses ever and 3 games against the 2025 Seahawks.
1
u/gachzonyea Detroit Lions 11h ago
Yes but his turnovers and forcing plays will mainly come into play vs better teams and not bad ones. I do think he’s a good qb though and will overcome that stuff longterm

For this season, the best two defenses he faced was the Steelers and the Jags.
Both team held him to under their current PPG.
Last year, his play against good and bad defenses is well documented. I hope this helps.
Also ETA: the only team the Pats outperforms the defense this year, against their PPG average was the Raiders.
