Analysis šŸ¤“ Is it time to have a conversation?

Post image

Forgive me because I havent watched a Giants game all year. So here I am asking reddit: Why is Skattebo so bad right now? Is it him? Is it the giants? He was such a baller last year as well as in college. Now I feel like he doesnt do anything.

He was never that good last year. Good for a 4th round RB. Not good enough to be the 1A guy on a team starting their backup QB

u/ooahah 19h ago

Lol this is accurate.

Skattebo is a fun* RB. I think bc of that people convinced themselves that he was the type of back that actually matters.

*by fun I basically mean a white guy who seems like he eats rocks and goes looking for contact

u/ContextMiddle3175 18h ago

7 tds in 7 starts is pretty decent for a rookie year

23

u/gar862 16h ago

Have to look beyond the td’s or you’ll also think Trent Richardson was good

5

u/CT-Mast23 15h ago

Which is crazy. Because looking beyond TDs it actually says he was...pretty dang good?

2

u/ContextMiddle3175 15h ago

Just saying its weird to write him off for a slow start when the offense is obviously got a shitty hand dealt to them. Just saying jury is out and he has a lot of upside.

3

u/CT-Mast23 14h ago

Oh no I'm on your side! Yeah, he's not Bijan, but I completely agree he has a lot of upside and has show he can run well. I think it was TN where he has 60 yards rushing, 72 yards after contact. Weird start to the season for him, and having Dart would help, but I think he's a lot better than he's getting credit for here!

1

u/ContextMiddle3175 14h ago

Sorry responded to the wrong person but like I feel like I’m not being crazy here. Just saying he doesn’t suck is all lol

1

u/motnorote Cheers from Iraq 15h ago

Lol what a nameĀ

1

u/Ok_Jellyfish_55 17h ago

Didn’t he have like one crazy blow up game that kinda skewed his counting stats.

1

u/ContextMiddle3175 17h ago edited 17h ago

He had a 3 tds game if that’s what your referring too.

He also has had a terrible situation this year and had 3 games were it was heavily raining and one where his QB went down on the second drive so it goes both ways

1

u/ooahah 13h ago

A TD a game is good for anyone, but it’s unsustainable for all but a very small handful of players ever. I’m more interested in how his play projects to the future.

1

u/ContextMiddle3175 11h ago

I agree with you and honestly rn it looks like he is missing a step but I don’t think it’s fair to write him off

8

u/themage78 New York Giants 20h ago

There's a reason Harbaugh was looking at drafting Love.

The Cardinals took him, and closed that door.

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Tea521 New York Giants 19h ago

I’m glad because Reese is a STUD. But yeah he a RB3 on a championship roster, RB2 on a contender.

10

u/Trifle_Old 19h ago

I'd your RB one is a fast shifty guy Skat would be a great RB2. Absolute wrecking ball in that situation. But using him all the time like that would be like downgraded Mike Alstott with no Warrick Dunn.Ā  Ā

2

u/ItsMeMofos13 New York Giants 18h ago

I said this to a buddy yesterday when watching the game. Skatt would be a good ā€œthunderā€ but needs his lightning. A shifty, big play RB would be a good compliment to him.

3

u/WayvieBones 18h ago

He was a damn stud in HS and College. He was versatile and fun to watch. But yes, Skatt’s nothing but a glorified RB2/RB3 in the NFL.

3

u/FootballAndBarbells 17h ago

This take would get downvoted into oblivion in our sub but this is 100% accurate. He is massively overrated by our fan base when the truth is he's undersized, slow and has ball security issues. We desperately need to draft a rb in April. He can not be our rb1 going into the 2027 season.

2

u/SonOfBroadly 14h ago

This is it.

He's not particularly explosive, doesn't make guys miss, doesn't read run plays very well, and isn't an especially good pass-catcher out of the backfield.

He's an object lesson in they kind of thing that can happen in the small sample game of football. Basically any RB on an NFL roster can get a few things to break his way across a handful of games if they fall into a lot of touches.

He's also a lesson in marketing/hype. He had an easily memeable and marketable personality and so ended up in front of people's eyes a lot more than his skill would suggest he should.

2

u/CT-Mast23 15h ago edited 13h ago

What is this revisionist history? 4.1 ypa in the offense (with 3.1 coming after contact). 1 fumble lost (and 1 fumble in general) through 101 attempts. With 207 yards receiving. During weeks 3-7 last year he forced 31 missed tackles, behind only CMC during that stretch. What are we even talking about here "he was never that good last year"?

Downvoting does not make your incorrect point any less incorrect

1

u/Gaming_Wisconsinbly 13h ago

He was a good PPR guy. Not going to rack up yards, but got a ton of red zone work and a lot of receptions.

Skattebo averaged 4.1 yards per carry last year. The NFL league average was around 4.3 yards per carry, for RB's. So, he was a below average RB, when it came to yards per carry.

I mean, in college he was a very good RB, but he was far from elite. An elite RB like Ashton Jeanty averaged 7.0 yards per carry, and Skattebo averaged 5.8 yards per carry. He was and always will be more of a battering ram, and NFL teams can bottle up most RB's without speed and elusiveness.

39

u/RubbleR0user New England Patriots 19h ago

He was a special college player because he was a man amongst boys. His game is a dime a dozen in the NFL he’s a solid short yardage back with a solid nose for the endzone. However, and I can’t believe no one in the comments has mentioned it, he had a pretty serious injury last year that took away that extra burst. Combine that with dart being out and your seeing why he was a 4th round back.

10

u/themage78 New York Giants 19h ago

He's probably not 100% back from the injury, why they picked up Harris who has been meh.

Losing Bricillo as a line coach has hurt, coupled with our best lineman is also playing injured.

Final nail in the coffin is nobody needs to spy on Jameis, so he is getting less running lanes than if Dart was in.

1

u/RubbleR0user New England Patriots 19h ago

Yep agree with all that!

0

u/Rare_Direction_1449 19h ago

Man amongst boys in the conference he was in. He wouldve gotten stonewalled in the SEC or BIG10

11

u/xThePoacherx Dallas Cowboys 19h ago

Skattebo tore up Texas in the playoffs. So please stop with the BigXII hate. Skattebo was a very good running back in the 2024 BigXII, but was not head and shoulders above UCF’s RJ Harvey or Texas Tech Tajh Brooks.

2

u/Horns8585 Dallas Cowboys 17h ago

He looked pretty good against the Longhorns, in the playoffs.

-3

u/Rare_Direction_1449 17h ago

Texas…. The forever underachieving Texas Longhorns. Okay

2

u/Horns8585 Dallas Cowboys 16h ago

Say what you will about them, they have had pretty solid defenses.

-3

u/Special_Engineer_445 Detroit Lions 19h ago

A poor man's David Montgomery

10

u/bigchunkbabygoo Dallas Cowboys 19h ago

Hes fun to watch, but he runs like he doesn't care for his life or limb. His fumble was ugly, and his performance drops off with every weapon the giants lose. He wont be a factor in a few years. Hes like Ezekiel Elliot but worse

18

u/yungfatface 19h ago

Way way way worse. Zeke was a legitimate top 5 candidate for multiple years of his career

11

u/VybeTurkey 19h ago

Zeke was a very good nfl running back

10

u/Turd_Ferguson420 Arizona Cardinals 19h ago

How is he anywhere close to Zeke?

0

u/LuciousLeftFoot1 18h ago

Think he stated it pretty clearly. His physical running style will shorten his career.Ā

7

u/VybeTurkey 18h ago

Zeke played 135 games over 9 seasons. That’s an eternity for a running back

1

u/Marq544 14h ago

Facts

1

u/Marq544 14h ago

Comparing him to Zeke is crazy. Zeke was a top 3 RB for years. Are you new to the NFL?

1

u/ghostnthegraveyard 14h ago

Zeke was also #1 in belly shirts

12

u/keni804 New York Giants 21h ago

Teams have no reason to respect the pass because Jameis is decent at his best and squirrely in the pocket.

Edit: run blocking especially in the interior has also been very bad

3

u/Technical_Heat5215 19h ago

Jameis and the passing game wasn’t the issue yesterday…

9

u/keni804 New York Giants 19h ago

Just because Jameis and the passing game was good yesterday doesn't change my point.

Jameis is slow and squirrely in the pocket so rushers can focus more on stopping the run and dont have to worry about sneaks or rollouts so less focus is on defending the pass and they dont have to eliminate a defender on a spy.

Jameis didn't play good against a defense that was focused on the pass, Jameis played good against a defense who's primary focus was to stop the run and let Jameis be Jameis and we just happened to get the good side of Jameis, and thats not even mentioning the fact the Commanders secondary is actual dogshit.

2

u/iamthedayman21 Philadelphia Eagles 18h ago

Bingo. There’s a reason Jameis had a 30/30 season. You just happened to get the ā€œ30 TD Jameisā€ yesterday.

9

u/Special_Engineer_445 Detroit Lions 19h ago

The conversation should be how only dumb people thought he could carry the workload.

Very nice backup and a great 3rd option at RB but shouldn't be a top guy.

11

u/Dazzling-Attorney891 New York Giants 20h ago

Dart is far better than anyone in this sub would care to admit and opens up the running game for him very well. Winston is not the same

u/fonkordie Fuck the Dodgers 17h ago

🤔

5

u/sillyfunnyguy05 New York Giants 19h ago

He’s a solid player and a tough little guy that grinds out tough yardage. He isn’t a full time RB1 and was never supposed to be. Problem is that without Dart, teams are just focusing on stopping the run and daring Jameis to beat them. And it works for most of the game tbh. So Skat looks way worse. And since Harbaugh doesn’t want to use Tracy for some reason, who’s much faster and more elusive, we’re stuck with Najee who makes Skat look fast.

5

u/hughesn8 19h ago

Dude was an early 4th round pick & the 8th RB selected in the draft. You’re acting like he was a 2nd round pick.

He gets national spotlight bc he is in New York & he is a little crazy.

Look at Kaleb Johnson. Drafted 20 spots ahead of Cam. Has already been traded for a 6th round pick after year one. He is the 3rd string RB for the worst run game team in the NFL who had no snaps in the 1st half vs the Bears. And he’d be 4th string if that team’s #1 RB wasn’t on the Commissioner’s Suspension due to personal issues.

2

u/BnSMaster420 19h ago

Jameis not a good substitute for how the giants appeared to run their offense vs cowboys in week one..

In that style.. Skatt would be great..

2

u/TheycallmeJohan7 17h ago

Hell of a pass blocker. The main issues he’s slow and and has no burst.

2

u/Slag-Bear 16h ago

Lots of people in here not watching giants games just like you, really a combo of injuries and weather. You lose out on the dual threat qb, so the only run you have to defend against is the RB. Add in coming off the major injury, he probably isn’t back at 100%

1

u/jidewalker New England Patriots 19h ago

He’s not the smartest runner so in order for him to be effective, you need a better offensive line.

1

u/bobbacklund11235 New York Giants 19h ago

I like skatt but even as a giants fan I don’t think he’s our rb1. I seen harbaugh going RB in the draft to improve his system tbh

1

u/Timely_Patience_5026 New England Patriots 18h ago

There was a guy on here claiming skat was an actual GENIUS, where is that guy?

1

u/corvine3 New York Giants 18h ago

Bro had one amazing game last year and everyone crowned him as great.

He plays hard and is good but he’s not a workhorse guy who can carry an offense on his back.

1

u/ArcticFox-NA33 18h ago

Peyton Hillis 2.0

1

u/Painting-Capital Kansas City Chiefs 18h ago

He was never that great he just has a big personality so he was talked about a lot and people assumed he was great.

1

u/Snickits New England Patriots 18h ago

He’s a personality, was never a RB1 - he’ll be a backup/ rotational guy in no time

1

u/AnyFigure8588 18h ago

I think they would be better starting Harris

1

u/ForeverCrunkIWantToB Indianapolis Colts 18h ago

He's fine. He does everything you need for an RB with the caveat that he's an average athlete. He's not going to be able to generate offense all by himself.

1

u/OrangMan14 17h ago

He was good at ASU but he's too small and dumb for the NFL.

1

u/DentonTrueYoung Chicago Bears 17h ago

He’s never been good. Wasn’t drafted to be good. Hes just popular because he’s a spectacle

1

u/Flat_Quarter3552 17h ago

He needs to be moved to a fullback role. His style of play is not sustainable for a traditional RB. Keep him for goal line situations and go back to a Tracy/Singletary/Harris regular rotation at RB

1

u/Possible-Soup1791 16h ago

He cost the Giants the game

1

u/jamesdfffghj 15h ago

The line can’t run block. He generates almost everything after contact, (39th in yards before contact/attempt, and 14th in yards after contact/attempt). First guy rarely ever brings him down and he’s always falling forward which is why everyone loves him. The fumbling has been an issue but a lot of the blame can be placed on the situation, if you can’t block it doesn’t matter how good you are, your numbers will be down. He’s also the type of back who gets better as the game goes on, and with the rotations of Harris & Tracy taking his touches, I don’t think he’s able to find his groove as well as he did last year

1

u/Medium_Change_4858 15h ago

He's not bad. Running is hard because we have a backup QB, playing in shit weather the last 3 games. Teams are trying to stop the run and want Jameis to throw. When everyone and their mothers know a run is coming, it's hard to run. It's not just the running back, it's the online, the scheme. It's a tough situation to have great stats.Ā

1

u/Treater9811 15h ago

He was good on a college team known for an elite run game and having ā€œstandoutā€ seasons at RB. And then he goes to the giants, or nfl in general, where a whole team and scheme isn’t designed on making a RB look good.

1

u/Keoki- 15h ago

He's pretty good at pass block.

1

u/Automatic-Schedule61 15h ago

He's a big intangibles guy, and sort of the heartbeat of the offense, but I think hes a bon afide RB2, we need a legit Rb1 option. In fact Id be open to trading for a RB upgrade pick this season to bolster our offense to take some pressure off of him and Jameis.

1

u/ay0river Dallas Cowboys 14h ago

Perhaps parading all over town and showing him at every single public event over the offseason plus a ton of commercials and sponsorships was a little premature after like 400 career rushing yards and an injury.

1

u/Marq544 14h ago

I feel like people on the outside hyped him up from clips and tik toks. Giants fans have known who he is for a while. A change of pace short yardage back at best.

1

u/jgnurly 14h ago

I think they're using him ineffectively the same way LA is with Hampton. They rotate their backs situationally so often that it's very obvious they're running when Skatt is in the game

1

u/bodaflack 12h ago

He was never the guy. JAG at best. I tried to figure out ways to short him even though I owned him on 0 teams.

Cool tough guy. That's it.

1

u/SuccessfulOwl4388 12h ago

Wait...people thought he was actually good?
