How seriously does Reddit take site-wide ban evasion?

• Upvotes

Hello,

It has come to my attention that a few individuals who were banned site-wide on Reddit have returned using other accounts. One of these accounts is new, while the other is an older alternate account.

I reported both accounts: one over a month ago and the other more recently. I did receive a reply from an admin stating, “Thanks for reaching out, we'll take a look at this user's activity and take any necessary action.” about the older report. However, nothing appears to have happened to that account. In fact, the user has even been reinstated as a head moderator of some communities and doesn't seem to be particularly secretive about having created a new account.

This leaves me wondering how seriously Reddit takes site-wide ban evasion and whether these reports are actually investigated. Or can they simply return after some time (or right away I guess) and carry on using Reddit as if nothing happened?

Old reddit access restrictions & subreddit wikis

• Upvotes

For reasons I still find rather frustrating, edits made to the "old wiki" versions of wiki articles do not synchronize to the "new wiki." Making the same edits twice is not something I'm interested in, so for some subreddit wiki articles I simply link users to the "old" version because that's the version I actually maintain.

It's not clear to me if many users being locked out of "old reddit" will prevent them from seeing the correct and updated version of these wiki articles.

As usual, it's a little frustrating that mods have to be the ones to bring up concerns like this whenever admin unilaterally changes something (sort of like automod being less accessible despite the "replacements" not being able to do half the things automod can)

How long until my subreddit can get reviewed? It’s been 70+ days yet it’s still unreviewed???

• Upvotes

(My sub in question: r/AlbertWhiskers)

This is negatively affecting my reach on platforms outside of Reddit where I want to advertise my subreddit!

It’s a very niche and quirky subreddit, but I know that the various people I’m familiar w/ outside of Reddit on places like Twitter & Pinterest might really enjoy it!

Unfortunately, since it’s unreviewed, it prevents most users from wanting to engage further since it requires the app or logging into an account to access.

Would really appreciate feedback! Preferably if it requires a certain amount of joined users, please state the exact number needed or the number of contributions needed for it to get reviewed! Thanks!

My account was hacked and used to add a moderator, and then placed the new mod as top mod.

As it says in the title. I am the sole mod of a community. Earlier today I got multiple emails about my account having a password change, email change, and 2fa change. Then I checked my subreddit and a new user was added as a mod. Seems like they used their access to my account to add their other account, and then using my account they reordered the mod team so that I cannot remove them. I've sent requests in all the channels I can think to, but I want to make sure this is resolved before they try to use their position as a mod for anything nefarious.

Edit: It seems as though my account is marked inactive. it's a pretty infrequently used subreddit so I hardly ever have any moderating to do, which I assume is why it's marked as such. Does this impact anything?

Harassment by a person

There is someone who has been banned for a year. He went off in modmail constantly attacking. We kept muting for 28 days and when it expired he would start back up again. Finally was able to perma mute and then block him on our personal accounts because he was in our dms there too. Well. Now a year later after some peace, hes harassing our new mods. Is there a place to report him to because this is getting ridiculous.

Mod code of conduct - where to report?

Five women's health subreddits have had their moderation taken over by a guy selling products from a company he is co-founder of.
The cofounder brag and links to his social media about the company are in his bio. He has posts and comments touting products from his company.

How do I report this as a clear violation of the Mod Code of Conduct?

Edit: helpful folks supplied the links below. Thanks everyone!

Can I make my subreddit of 70k visitors private and invite only?

I've reached a breaking point in my subreddit. I run a queer gaming subreddit that has been the target of constant brigading, attacks, has 2 dedicated subreddits stalking us. The stalkers ban evade from reddit and they're on their 4th account. Their new post is a threat to dox me after also posting a meme of a trans woman hanging by a rope. I am at my wits end and I don't know what to do anymore. I think for my safety and the safety of my queer members being a public subreddit is a risk. I want to keep the community I have but in a way where we don't have a constant target on us and only members can see the posts. Is this allowed? I want to make sure I'm not breaking MCoC before I try.

Hi Folks, what if we do NOT want moderation?

My lovely community, r/potsbox does not need or want moderation. I find that if I share a link to an exciting post? nearly ALWAYS people write back saying they cannot read the post!

That's the opposite of what we were hoping from reddit. We WANT people to be able to see and read and no, we don't have spammers attacking our group, we'd be so lucky to be that popular.

For the life of me? I cannot see what setting can TURN THIS OFF!!!

What can a moderator do so we don't have to "check" every comment and post to make it visible? I've done everything I can think or see!

help!

thank you --

How to change icons and banners

This may sound very stupid. I have created a new subreddit and want to change the icon and banner. Every time I do it never saves, but there is no option to save. Hitting refresh reverts it and I am unsure if it has something to do with settings or if I have to go into settings to change it.

Categories do not work

I don't think this is just an issue on my end, as I've already tried from another device using a different account, in addition to my own. I think there's a problem with the macro-categories in the various subreddits. When clicking on them (iOS, mobile app), instead of opening the leaderboard/ranking, it throws an error. Does anyone know why?
Thanks!

Admin Replied Can we delete our existing mod only chat channel?

I want to ask that can we delete our existing mod only chat channel and create new one, I know we can create new one, but Idk how to delete the older one permanently, Since our current mod channel is filled with so many clutter and non sense talks, I want to fresh start and delete the older one so new mods can't access that

Mod Answered [Mobile and Chrome] No option to remove scheduled post

I am trying to update the rules in the sub I moderate. They were posted by automod and I thought that a scheduled post would go through automod and it doesn't, it'll post as me. I'm new to this part of modding, so I tried to research and clearly I failed. How do I delete this and get it to post through automod?

ETA - I'll go to the correct sub for how to get it posted correctly. Just need help on the deletion of the scheduled post.

Examples on mobile and Chrome

Admin Replied Is reddit sending surveys to users that visits your subreddits?

So, just had this modmail come through from one of our users:

Hi there!

We're contacting you as part of our regular research process, in partnership with the volunteer moderators of r/my_subreddit, to understand how Redditors engage with r/my_subreddit. You are receiving this survey because you visit r/my_subreddit. If you choose to participate, your responses will be anonymized and shared with the volunteer moderation team of r/my_subreddit so that they can better understand the needs of people like you and make improvements to r/my_subreddit.

If you're willing to participate in this survey to help make Reddit and r/my_subreddit better, please complete the survey at this link within the next week. The survey should take no longer than 5 minutes to fill out. Thank you so much for your time!

Best,

The Reddit Admins

For more information about this survey, including how to opt out, please see this link

Emphasis is mine. The user did not include the links that got sent to them, and did not say which account it came from as I write this message.

My concern (and immediate red flag of it being a scam) are the words "in partnership with..." - we don't have a 'partnership' with the admins, and unaware of surveys being sent to visitors.

Ads for competing products

My users are complaining that every time they go to my sub there is a competing ad for a product that I am promoting in my sub. For instance if I'm promoting public health resources the users see "call this support center" or "this doctor has the best experience in ..." ads. How can I stop those? I see other subreddits with similar content that have absolutely no ads whatsoever. What did I do wrong in setting up my sub?

Mod Answered Mod went rogue and deleted all of our flairs

Over 45,000 posts were untagged and all of our flairs deleted.

Is there any way that this can be rolled back? Obviously we removed the offending mod.

Automations Trouble: Block From Submitting Feature

Question Answered: Automations have trouble recognizing blocked words and phrases when users utilize quotation marks and spoiler text, and automations does not have a built in way to fix this at the present.

Hello,

I help mod a couple eating disorder subreddits, and we make heavy use of the automation feature to block certain words and phrases from being posted to not encourage promoting disordered eating habits including but not limited to throwing up, fasting, OMAD/one meal a day. These features have worked as intended for around...six or seven months? I forget the exact date we began to use this to block comments, titles, and posts with certain words and phrases.

I thought perhaps something changed with how words were recognized when:

  • Someone posted "OMAD" with quotation marks in a title, and I thought perhaps they got around the word ban by adding quotations, making automation think this is a different word.
  • Someone posted "fasting" without quotation marks in a post body text under a spoiler, and I thought the spoiler was limiting the automation recognizing this word.
  • Someone posted "throwing up" without quotation marks in a comment under a spoiler, and I thought the spoiler was limiting the automation recognizing this word.

All of the above issues occured in the past 30ish hours. We trying to get answers on whether or not automations have changed or if our userbase has found ways to get around automations. We are a small mod team, looking to remedy this issue quickly because we understand leaving up such content not only drives away users but leaves up content that could be potentially harmful for our community. We try to take these community violations down as quickly as possible.

All of our automations use the same "if" [banned word] "then" [block from submitting] feature. If it changes how automations work, this blocking includes a pop up to remove banned words from the post, the title, or the comment.
