Admin Replied Why can some users comment on their posts when filtered for mod approval when others cannot?

We had a pretty good system for making sure everyone was a human who had read the rules in one of my subs. The past few days it has not been consistently working.

If their account was under a certain subreddit specific karma requirement, their post would be filtered and an automod comment would appear on the post to say “you’re in our queue, please reply to this comment and we will approve your post”

Some of the users in our queue are able to reply and doing just fine, others are sending us modmail that they are unable to reply to our automod comment aka “it’s greyed out”.

This seemingly unannounced change is adding a lot of extra effort to our workflow. Does anyone have ideas as to what is happening?

Why can some users comment on their posts when filtered for mod approval when others cannot?

We are having a similar issue and one of our mods determined they were all mobile users with negative site karma. They are able to pass the automod with the browser.

Thank you - I hope Reddit can fix this soon. If you put in a bug report let me know and I’ll bump the thread

"They are able to pass the automd with the browser."

Can you elaborate on this?

They can reply to the automod message from browser but not from mobile

OK. They're not bypassing AutoModerator; they're simply commenting.

Correct. In our case we have them answer a question which put it into the queue for manual review. If they don't respond to the auto mod its removed after an hour and they would need to repost. However currently mobile users with negative karma can not comment even though nothing is showing locked from our end. It seems they are able to respond outside of the app though.

Identical issue, except ours is 2 hours and we manually approve it

Sounds like a glitch/bug with the app.

Hey u/ScreamAndScream! Thanks for reporting, we're looking into this!

Have users mentioned wether this is primarily happening on iOS or Android?

For any other mods noticing a similar issue, feel free to chime in!

ETA: If you could share an example automod rule either here or via modmail/chat, it would be super helpful!

I have reports from android and iOS

The automod rule is pretty straight forward - it leaves a comment on posts that are filtered to queue. All my automod rules are public on the referenced subreddit’s sidebar

type: submission priority: 0 author: account_age: < 30 days combined_subreddit_karma: < 25 satisfy_any_threshold: true action: filter action_reason: "New Account - possibly spam" # please note we manually approve anything that gets filtered. As of right now there is no way to trigger a reply to a comment to approve a post.

We’re getting a ton of this in /amioverreacting, we haven’t been asking everybody for specs but the first few cases were on mobile.

Automod code:

# comment on new or low karma account requesting the password

type: submission
author:
account_age: "< 14 days"
comment_karma: "< 50"
satisfy_any_threshold: true
is_edited: false
action: filter
action_reason: VERIFY spam prevention

Hi {{author}}, in order to prevent spam and bot posts, this subreddit temporarily removes some posts until OP proves that they are human. Please **reply to this comment and answer the question:** what is your favorite board or card game?

Mods will manually review submissions and approve posts with a correct response. Please be patient, especially during overnight (USA) hours, as our mod team is not online 24/7. Posts that are not verified within one hour will be removed.

Reddit is apparently experiencing a glitch where some low-karma accounts are not able to reply to comments on mobile Reddit. If this is happening, you may load this post in a browser and you should be able to reply there.
