This demographic is key for Russian influence operations. In 2016 bots and misinformation arguably swung the election. In 2026 they're trying the same thing with the midterms. Bots are cheap and unfortunately 35% Americans are gullible enough to believe whatever they see on social media.

You may have noticed there are fewer bots on Reddit and Twitter the last few days. That is because Ukraine struck 3 of Russia's largest datacenters, knocking them and their crime-bots offline.

Side note: while its plausible that the bombings had an effect, the theory lacks strong evidence and doesn’t account for other factors.

But to chime in on your comments overall point, it’s not just elections they go after. Bots are frequently used to not just sway public opinion, but increase polarization and civil unrest among Americans.

If you’ve ever seen posts of images with a caption designed to look like a headline — those are often created by bots. Aside from the aforementioned purposes of disinformation, and to spark arguments and polarization, they also use them to create an environment/cesspool where it’s easy for bad actors to slip disinformation past us. In other words, the more frequently we get used to those kinds of posts, the less likely we are to question them and start accepting them as legitimate news sources.

Edit: I’m not necessarily doubting you, but that 35% figure seems very low.

9

u/ShaveTheTurtles 4h ago

It could be that bot nets in general have their c2 servers in russia because they arent going to help the US with investigations. Not all of the bots are ran by the Russian government, They are also ran by other folks as a way to make tracking them harder.

6

u/subLimb 4h ago

Yeah also this post is almost certainly conflating all Russian traffic with bot traffic.

u/CuriousCamels 3h ago

You’re completely delusional if you think only 35% of Americans, or any group of people, are gullible enough to fall for disinformation. I’ve been researching information operations for about a decade, and I assure you that the vast majority of people fall for some type of disinformation on a daily basis.

4

u/MorrisBrett514 3h ago

I thought you were going to go the other way and say it's less. Lol. Was about to be like "have you met anyone from this country?"

2

I guess I have a high opinion of myself and other millenials, but Ive only met a handful of us that are straight trumpy types. Ive met plenty of us that are just.... chronic contrarians, probably the worst disease that our generation carries, so I can see how that could be manipulated into pro Russian opinions.

But yeah, spare me the "WELL ACTUALLY..." because I don't care.

15

u/AngryVegan94 3h ago

It’s not about trying to turn millennials into trumpies it’s about creating complacency with the constant “both sides” bullshit so that you just don’t vote at all. That’s their endgame.

3

u/ChickerWings 3h ago

And checked out millenials who just watch reality TV and sports fall for the both sides stuff because it makes them feel like "whats the point anyway"

16

u/Woodit 4h ago

I’m convinced this same thing is happening on the various career subs. Sooo much obviously fake rage bait that most people still fall for shit how it’s best to quiet quit, walk out without notice, do the bare minimum etc. I’ve always wondered why people set up bots to share those stories but demoralizing a young and impressionable workforce would certainly pay off

35

u/CharlieFiner 1993 4h ago

And the posts espousing extreme introversion bordering on misanthropy, bragging about how they never leave the house. Bots trying to normalize sitting at home playing with the other bots in your phone instead of talking to actual people.

14

u/Woodit 4h ago

Anything to help population collapse and need for immigration leading to civil fracture. How many times have you seen a post or comment espousing “I am just totally done with dating. Nothing comes before my peace ☺️”

8

u/No-Inflation-2805 2h ago

Yes. The ultimate goal is to keep the US out of global p*****cs (this sub censors that word). They want people to either v**e (another censored word) for Nationalists or sit out of elections.

As an aside, I really wish the mods would adjust some of their rules for this sub so we can openly talk about what's happening to our world.

30

u/Clever_Mercury 4h ago

This would make sense in some of the debates that happen around economic mobility, why millennials don't have children, or about generational wealth. The most obscenely unscientific, unjustified arguments typically dominate here.

I'm surprised some of the other subs aren't much higher though. What's with the sports and car stuff being so popular for bots? Is it an accident of their programming that they like seeing humans get hurt in those activities or something?

27

u/MoonshineEclipse 4h ago

Many of these subs are where young men are likely to congregate so they appear to be targeting a certain voting demographic

20

u/holistivist 4h ago

They’re trying to radicalize men.

11

u/PatchesMaps 4h ago
  1. Large subs so it's unlikely people will recognize or remember the username and a larger audience.
  2. Medium post volume most of the time so it's easier to get a large amount of attention on a post during the (relative) lulls in activity.
  3. Those sports are known to get involved in "tangential topics" (for censorship reasons).
  4. Even if they have rules to keep the posts themselves on topic, the comments tend to stray to other topics.

4

u/Clever_Mercury 3h ago

Thank you for the explanation. It's really disheartening when thinking about it because I (a woman) don't tend toward those areas or topics and figured that people were just having fun.

On a side issue, I've been a little skeptical of the whole male loneliness thing (I think everyone is lonely these days), but for what's worth, I bet a huge part of what is male-specific loneliness is coming out of the very radicalization happening in that way. What should be a no-cost bonding experience instead becomes about 'tangent topics' is not great for mental health.

The 21st century is a nightmare.

There was a post in another subreddit earlier stating there was "no cleaner, more potent high" than social plans being cancelled. The post was clearly written by AI and someone pointed it out in the comments. I have seen a lot of posts along those same lines in this sub about how much better bedrotting and doomscrolling are than having to deal with actual human connections, and people generally bragging about how they have no social life outside of work and do nothing all weekend but sleep. It dawned on me that I think many of those posts are bots too, trying to normalize misanthropy and extreme introversion in favour of interacting online with bots and algorithms.

I checked the other day (and actually updated this for current today)

Subreddit Activity Check

Results were inconclusive. My opinion is that low level bots may have been affected relying on a singular or a couple data centers. I bet their high-value projects are going to be proxied under US data centers though.

Right? Makes me doubt all the stats.

3

u/No-Inflation-2805 3h ago

5

u/MushinZero 2h ago

This explains it kinda ok I guess.

The political subs saw an increase in activity because the human Russian agents were being told be their LLMs to go to the subs on this image to respond to a post, since those LLMs went down they went back to their main subs to troll.

2

u/No-Inflation-2805 2h ago

Exactly. Russia's disinformation campaign against the US has been going on for well over a decade. It's far more sophisticated than it was during 2016, and in the decade since they've incorporated AI to expand their reach into more niche spaces. The troll farms that peddle out misinformation incorporate a mix of human agents *and* AI. In the case of the graph, AI was helping to guide human agents on which niche subs to target, and then human agents would write out comments and directly interact. The AI went down because of the attacks on the data centers, which left the human agents essentially blind. Without direction they went back to "default subs", so those subs saw an increase in activity.

•

u/rotundrikishi 1h ago

I wish I could be hired to do that back to Russia, I can shitpost with the best of them.

•

u/No-Inflation-2805 1h ago

I do it for free. Ninety percent of my reddit activity is dedicated to making people aware of disinformation campaigns. Focus on the sub for your city. Local subs are being actively targeted by bots/trolls, but they haven't been fully infested like some of the larger subs have. They're where you can make the most impact. Also, it's helping people directly in your community.

Don't just spam people with posts about disinformation campaigns. Tie it into conversations. Make it relevant to what's happening to the people around you, so they understand why it's important and why they need to pay attention. Point out troll accounts when you see them, explain why you suspect it's a troll. Back up any comments with links to sources on bot/troll activity on Reddit.

That’s not Surprising it’s a key voter block this midterm cycle.

It doesn’t take a lot to sway just enough. Even a 2% decrease to millennial voter turnout would be considered a massive success for an operation like this.

Even then a lot of it is just slow psy-op type stuff. Slowly make people think X isn’t that bad, maybe Y is the right way to go about solving this problem. etc etc

It’s also really easy to block a certain opinion with bots. You just have to mass downvote those as they come up and attack them and make it seem like people organically think that idea is moronic and everyone will just follow the herd

Reddit is literally infested with bots.

A few years ago, when you could sort all of Reddit by NEW you would absolutely see strange subs with auto bots conversing with themselves.

There are sites where you can buy upvotes, and while they're against TOS, Russia and China have sophisticated spoofers and VPNs. Impossible to prove.

Reddit is a major problem because anyone can create an account without an email.

Not to say its to spread state sponsored propaganda, but Russia absolutely hosts these services to even the lowest bidder.

People forget, the goal with this kind of bot traffic isn't necessarily to achieve any specific political objective.

It's not to get this guy elected or that law passed. That kind of blunt instrument isn't the danger.

It's to demoralize entire nations (that's a direct quote from their playbook by the way, the word "demoralize" specifically) undermine it's confidence in itself and paralyze political decisionmaking.

They'll push any divisive topic, any negative talking point, undermine any positive achievement.

They aggressively push both sides of debate away from the center, and you're more vulnerable to it than you want to think you are.

3

u/Mike312 4h ago

The Obama admin had some pretty severe restrictions on Russia, including freezing the assets of oligarchs after the annexation of Crimea and the Magnitsky Act among other things.

There were also severe sanctions on Russian oil and gas, with those being their main export. Most of these efforts were led by the US over human rights abuses, and also Crimea. The US has also been a huge backer of Ukraine and provided a ton of weapons and intelligence that in a non-negligible way has helped Ukraine successfully defend itself.

If the US were to stop backing Ukraine, they could resume selling their oil on the black market, etc. then they'd have the funds to buy more weapons.

3

u/marvgh1 4h ago

I found it odd that no other generational subs are in the list at all, but then again could be selection bias

2

u/Sailing_Mishap 4h ago

My guess is that the bots go to subs where it’s easy to get upvotes like this one, post generic slop (in this case, nostalgia slop), then the bot accounts look more legit, then they use them to appear like regular people instead of new accounts.

2

Tbh the methodology in OOP is kinda bullshit as it compares sub activity (not even specifically bot activity) to a very short timeframe baseline, with no proper historical data. Sports subs are event-based, e.g., there are scheduled races in Formula 1 on weekends so the activity is up during the race events with posts and discussions, and low on other days. This is normal

Good point. I think this makes sense

u/duetmasaki 4h ago

Makes sense. That's where the let's go Brandon chant started

Is it really? What a bizarre connection.

Well the NASCAR had a race this weekend so yes after the race I would expect a huge decrease in posts. Probably more related to that than hit data centers but I could be wrong

u/aMoose_Bit_My_Sister 4h ago

theres no russian bots here.

im in california oblast and i havent seen a single one.

2

u/FibonacciSequester 3h ago

What's that joke?

An American tells a Russian, "You have really good propaganda, I hear."

Russian says, "Not as good as yours."

American replies, "We don't have propaganda."

Fucking runescape STILL top 4 for bots.

Nothing ever changes

u/cbck 5h ago

Will the actual humans looking to bond with fellow millennials please stand up? We need a secret code or something.

It’s worth mentioning that not all of these are “argue with you” bots, some are for searching & collecting info

9

u/Smellanor_Rigby 4h ago

I would fully believe that a majority of the "guess I'll never retire" posts are from Russian bots.

u/Rope_slingin_champ 4h ago

MMA and Nascar subs track

4

u/Imgonnagolaydown 4h ago

Nothing in the conservative subs? I'm gonna go look

4

u/MoonshineEclipse 4h ago

If you notice, there’s a trend for which subs are targeted and it appears to be towards subs that are likely to be frequented by young men:

- mma

  • formula1
  • overwatch
  • gta6
  • marvelstudios

2

u/heavyrotation7 3h ago

I mean look at the original post. The OP themselves admitted it’s a flaw to include sport subs as the activity is up during the matches and events and down after. I assume it applies to games or occasional releases so the discussions and posts are not on the same level daily. The OP measures total sub activity for some reason

Is that where the whole "millennials are miserable" bs keeps coming from?

3

u/SpiralBreeze 5h ago

Oh good!  I wanted to see what the numbers looked like!

3

u/Deranged_Kitsune 4h ago edited 2h ago

Looking over that list, I was surprised at how many I've already blocked for being bot-infested shit holes.

3

u/DrugChemistry 4h ago

99% of the time I post a comment here, there's <10 views of my comment. I figured it all bots.

3

u/PatchesMaps 4h ago

That's not surprising at all. Have you seen the post/comment activity? I've done a doubletake thinking I was on a boomer Facebook group a few times

I've noticed a decline in those "starter pack" posts and thank god for that.

7

u/InTheBight 4h ago

Makes perfect sense. This sub sucks and is cringe

Blyat!

NASCAR is interesting as a fan

2

u/MetalSlimeHunter 4h ago edited 4h ago

Yeah, which cracks me up when there’s a post like “What’s your birthday and did you ever watch Ren & Stimpy” and it gets 5000 comments. The bots barely have to try.

2

u/RevBT 4h ago

I wonder how much of those posts are for training their bots?

2

u/TBTrpt3 4h ago

The re-posting bot circle jerk of this sub is insane. I'm happy to see it slow down.

2

u/Matthmaroo 4h ago

This sub is depressing as fuck

If your not on the verge of homeless , the bots go crazy

2

u/DavidHoggsDong 4h ago

It’s ripe with opportunities to create division, especially among age groups and groups within groups. Their whole moto is to divide and think they’re conquering but Americans are built different

2

u/kevymetal87 4h ago

I feel like this is less about directly influencing voters and more about stealing personal data.

2

u/MJ_Live92 3h ago

How tf did we beat nascar and mma lol. That’s crazy. I figured fauxmoi would be in the top ten as well. I find that sub extremely suspect.

2

u/Dependent-Law7316 3h ago

Honestly I’m surprised there aren’t AI subs in this list. There was something in the news earlier this year about a bunch of editorials/social media posts opposing AI coming from russian and chinese propaganda machines. There are obvious strategic advantages for them to halt or slow US AI development, so it’s a bit surprising that this movement isn’t necessarily reflected in the top subreddits.

(And yes, not all opposition to AI is botting. There are plenty of perfectly valid reasons to want to slow that down and scrutinize new data center locations and resource use. That doesn’t mean foreign actors aren’t amplifying that position because it suits their agenda).

2

u/lion7725 3h ago

I would guess it’s the doomer circlejerk posts on here about how poor everyone is.

Find it odd that UFC is #1. Guess they are arguing Khabib is the GOAT or something

2

u/notyouravgredditor Xennial 3h ago

No shit. The doomer "everything sucks now and was better in the 90s even though I was born in 95" posts are probably all bots.

2

u/CrazedRaven01 3h ago

Привет!

To be fair, I think a lot of sociopolitical issues do crop up on this subreddit, especially social justice related issues and if what we know about Russian bots is true, they feed off division and hatred.

2

u/fleebleganger 3h ago

No shit? What do you think most of the nostalgia posts are. They’re designed to make you think now is worse than it is.

2

u/tonylouis1337 Zillennial 2h ago

Interesting that there's a lot of Russian bot activity in fauxmoi

2

u/VizualAbstract4 2h ago

I believe it, lots of "Generation ___ bad" to keep people separated.

u/saffytaffy '88 5h ago

4

u/olivedeez 4h ago

I remember getting the email from Tumblr that I had interacted with one! I was scandalized but now I’m doing it all the time on Reddit. The internet has changed a lot in a few years.

Well, we as a generation are much more likely to be liberal than any other generation. So that tracks.

Pop culture chat is definitely a cess pool. faux moi is one of the worst subreddits
