I called my dad by his first name for over 15 years. (Young when parents divorced, visited on weekends scenario). Step dad also by his first name. In my early 20s, i saw how painful that was to my father and corrected myself to calling him dad.

Im in the same situation now with my son, and im so happy he didnt do that same thing. Im Dad to him. He shortened it from daddy when he was around 8.
