General Discussion Gun transfer from Ohio

Hello everyone new CPL member here,

My Dad lives in Ohio and I live in Michigan and he is giving me with old 9mm that he just wants to get rid of. What or is there any laws stopping me from legally obtaining that gun and using it as my personal concealed carry?

Thanks for any advice!

Your dad needs to ship the pistol to an FFL in MI. The MI FFL will facilitate the transfer to you. You will pay a transfer fee to your FFL and your dad will pay his FFL to ship it.

Cross state transfer of handguns require an FFL. Federal law.

This ↑↑↑

The only legal way to transfer ownership of a handgun across state lines without using an FFL (in the recipient's state) is through a bequest or intestate succession (inheritance)

ETA: Dad can also bring it to MI and do a transfer to you in person at a MI FFL. Saves some money on mailing and outbound transfer fees.

Expect at minimum a $10 state Pistol Sales Record fee and what ever the dealer sees fit to charge. Typically $25 to $50.

What?
You can print out as many RI-060's as you want ... for FREE at home.

I think the charge is a state processing free? I've always been told and charged it.

Are you getting these $10 forms from a dealer after purchase or a PD/Sheriff before you go to the dealer.

One form is for folks with a CPL (or buying a long gun from a dealer) -- sales record
The other form (from the PD) is for folks without a CPL -- license to purchase

If a dealer is charging you, you're getting hosed...find a new dealer.
If the PD is charging you ($10 notary fee) that is normal.

Never heard of them - is this a storefront? I would go somewhere else, even if I had to spend the $10 in gas.

Their statements about RI-060 requirements/exemptions are also flat out wrong.

Their policy - what they are trying to say - is $25 transfer for non-pistols and $35 for pistols. Calling it a "$10 RI-060 fee" is dumb and confusing - and basically works out to a $10 tax for a CPL holder. No mention of a fee for a RI-010 (LTP) for non-CPL holders picking up a pistol....or even doing an RI-060 for a long gun (statutory requirement).

Mmm...anything to do with weaponry, for me, requires increasing levels of trust. I normally dont even reveal im an owner, let alone a holder. Even on the .02% thats on the up and up, its a shady enough feel that Im going elsewhere.

Not to make it a PSA or anything, but for anyone whos new to shooting or CPL: the 2a and CPL community in MI, particularly west MI, has almost a club feeling. Be above board, respectful, and above all SAFE and you have friends all over the state who just want to hang out and help out and get you on the range. Do the opposite, and see those doors close and friendly ranges dry up. Just putting some of my experience out there for anyone who wants to listen.

Thanks again friends, it was only a ten, but it sure had a bad taste.

You can literally fill out the form in adobe on your PC, print, and sign it for free. That is what you would do with a cpl if buying from another Michigan resident. Or you get a non resident cpl from another state and don’t do any registration, legally.

FFL here.

As others have said since your dad isn’t an MI resident he’ll have to mail it to a Michigan FFL (or if he comes up to Michigan he can meet you at an FFL).

Since you have a CPL you don’t need a permit to purchase a firearm.

Once at the FFL you’ll have to fill out the 4473 and pay the transfer fee (ours is $20 for example but it varies for each FFL). Since you have a CPL the dealer doesn’t have to run a NICS check (basically a background check is the easiest way to explain it) but they still might depending on store policy.

I would recommend to call local FFL’s to see what they charge for a transfer and if they accept firearms from private individuals (as not all do). You can also use a few online tools such as GunBrokers FFL locator.

You will also need to obtain a Michigan CPL if you intend to carry concealed. (If you don't have one already) Ohio is a constitutional carry state, Michigan is not.
