Does Arch Come Back
Something I’m very curious about…almost similar to the Quinn decision in 2024. Quinn almost certainly would have came back for 1 more year if not for the Arch hype.
But also, it was very clear there some “internal encouragement” for him to go pro…because folks were over him by the time the Ohio state semi final game ended.
So I am curious, what do we think Arch and Texas will decide to do once the season ends?
I’d highly assume it depends on how it goes. If we make the playoffs and maybe perhaps win a game, maybe there’s more optimism…but if we miss it completely and go 9-3 again….id imagine that door is almost completely shut.
You also have to consider we have two 5 stars waiting for their turn…in an era where people don’t like to wait too long, because why would they when they can go make 1-2M else where and play right away?
Tricky situation. Thoughts?

At this point, if I’m a 5 ⭐️ QB, I’m seriously questioning why I’m at Texas. Setting aside the entirety of the offensive struggles for a bit, Arch is the second near perfectly rated 5 ⭐️ QB under Sark. Quinn sunk to the 7th round, and Arch is doing his best to tank what would have been a sure thing.
We are not properly developing our QBs right now. If we don’t get a handle on it, that’s the kind of thing that can negatively impact recruiting for the position and impact recruiting for the offense as a whole. How long can we hold on before we turn into Iowa and it becomes endemic.

u/azwethinkweizm Hook 'Em 13h ago
Drew Mestemaker is taking the college football world by storm and he never started a game in high school. At some point we need to stop giving a shit about stars and start looking for talent that can be developed.
18
u/TexasNatty05 13h ago
That’s partly my point. We aren’t developing the great QBs. Mestemaker isn’t automatically great. He was developed well. Mestemaker under Sark probably stays a 0 ⭐️.

u/barley_wine 11h ago
You have a one off example. I mean Brady is the greatest QB but that doesn’t mean you should skip 1st round QBs. More times than not a high rated QB does better than a worse rated one.
3
u/d1sportsball 7h ago
Cam Ward was also a 0 star QB recruited and developed by Eric Morris... became the 1st overall pick. Mahomes was a 3 star QB and was recruited and developed by Eric Morris... I dont need to explain how good he's been.
For all the talk of Sark being an offensive guru and QB whisperer... sure seems like Morris is a younger, more local and recently relevant example of that and is simply better than Sark at both.
Not trying to jump the gun here... but if Sark were fired I imagine Eric Morris is high on the list of replacements. He also lets his QBs make adjustments at the line, something that Sark is completely unwilling to do. He may also call his own plays which is rarely the formula for a national title winning team but he's much less of a tsar than Sark is.
2
u/barley_wine 7h ago
I think we’re talking about different things. I don’t believe the problem is as much the talent as the person developing them. We definitely need a someone to develop the quarterbacks, I feel bad for Ewers and Manning at this point.
1
u/d1sportsball 6h ago
My point is that if we're discussing QB whisperers, then Sark is very clearly not one, at least not anymore. Both Ewers and Manning have regressed under Sark, tanking their draft stocks. Both were 5 star #1 QBs (Manning never should have been one with his competition, but still a solid 4 star talent) and Sark is failing while other coaches, most notably Eric Morris, are walking into the middle of the great plains and practically building diamonds from the dirt on the ground.
Piggybacking off of OP, just about any QB can be developed, and EVERY QB needs development regardless of their star rating. Now it should be easier to develop a 4-5 star as the ratings are right more often than not like you said, but Sark can't even develop the highly rated QBs properly. If high rated QBs start realizing that... then Texas will suffer in getting QBs that aren't developed through the portal to come here.

u/austinfoodsnob 10h ago
maybe it's just better now to get a proven transfer over developing a 5⭐️ out of HS
1
u/gmr548 6h ago
Recruiting rankings are somewhat accurate in aggregate. Teams with a bunch of highly rated recruits generally outperform those without them, though there is obviously a lot of variance in there. For any given individual player they are a total crap shoot.
Also coaching staffs are not browsing 247 and looking at the star rating to decide whether to scout a kid lol
14
u/AppropriateCompany9 make em eat shit 15h ago
In fairness, Sark has never really developed a QB. Take an honest read of the QBs under his tutelage and the list actually doesn’t look very good. It hasn’t impacted his ability to recruit here or elsewhere.
5* QBs who come here are automatic locks to be on TV and get drafted, and that’s probably all they’re thinking about at that age.
2
u/UnappliedMath 14h ago
This isn’t really true it’s just been a while since he has developed a QB. Like 8 years
6
u/AppropriateCompany9 make em eat shit 14h ago
I’d argue the answer is still never, unless you want to credit him for his time at USC. Run down the list, this is objectively not a good case for development and NFL quality. Jake Locker might be his best development job. Seriously.
2
u/tygrib 7h ago
It’s not really fair to use nfl success as a sign of college development, especially if we have a sample size of how many qbs in the last 10 years?
1
u/AppropriateCompany9 make em eat shit 7h ago
Development means they get better to the point where they’re ready for the NFL. I think it’s misinterpreting my argument if you think I’m asking how many super bowls/mvps his disciples have earned. That’s not what I’m getting at.
2
u/tygrib 6h ago
I don’t think his qbs have been notably “unprepared” for the NFL. Considering the amount of pro style 12p full field progressions in our offense, I’d have to see a pretty convincing argument about what his coaching lacks that makes you feel this way. I honestly think you’re just saying the qbs play poorly in the nfl and that’s not really much of an argument.
Even the narrative of Ewers and Manning stagnating is murky. Ewers was injured and missed time every year in college, played his best ball in his second year as a starter, and led a pretty solid offense even after the switch to the SEC. Manning noticeably did develop through the course of his playing time last year (in fact it was all anyone could talk about). It’s fine to say they haven’t hit their ceilings as prospects, but that’s not really the whole story.1
u/UnappliedMath 4h ago
I was hinting at his time at USC. That is surely where the reputation derives from.
69
u/Cormetz Alright Alright Alright 16h ago
Not to be a doomer, but I actually hope he enters the draft and gets a decent 3/4 round result at a team that will really develop him.
As for Texas, it won't matter much who is QB as long as Sark holds onto the play calling and keeps Flood and Milwee around. He has not had a solid offense in years, and he needs to make a change. I am not saying we fire Sark now, but if there was a solid replacement we should start thinking about it.

I am so ready to be done with the arch manning era at Texas. The hype has brought more media and more pressure than we already have and his play on the field is just not worth it. I mean I genuinely think Sam Ehlinger was better than him.
20
u/jamtas 14h ago
Sam was 100% better than both Arch and Quinn, not sure that’s a hot take. Sam on any of the teams the past few years takes Texas to the natty game. An offense loaded with talent at WR & RB with a stout defense? Sam would have been cooking, especially since teams would have to also gameplay for a spy on him as well.
5
u/ParsnipCraw Aggy Sucks 13h ago
Man I am just so weirded out by Sarkisian right now. This was an issue basically all of last season, even in the wins.
Is he a total fraud as an offensive coach?
3
u/d1sportsball 6h ago
Its becoming more and more likely. Fun fact, Texas rushing yards per attempt have gone down every year since he got here.
2021: 5.276 2022: 5.271 2023: 5.1 2024: 4.5 2025: 4.4 2026: 3.8
For a team with a long and successful history as a run heavy team with great running backs and physical offensive lines, Texas has been getting worse the longer Sark has been here.
And as for total offense per game, 477.5 in 2023, 437.5 in 2024, 388.5 in 2025 and 379.2 in 2026. From our peak offense in 2023, led by many players who were originally brought in or recruited by Herman, down nearly 100 total yards per game with all of Sarks guys. And of the 2023 guys who were brought in entirely by Sark, most were already studs that simply needed to be flipped to Texas (AD Transfer, Worthy + Banks commitment flips). And it doesn't take some genius to convince a guy to play for Texas.
That 2023 team remains the best Texas team under Sark, being a play away from a national title match with Michigan where Texas, unlike UW, was a good matchup to beat UM. And yet after such a season of highs, beating Bama by 10 on the road, setting Big 12 title game records, making and competing in the 4 team playoff (Unlike OU in 3/4 attempts), things are on a downward trajectory.
Maybe this can be fixed, maybe this is a wakeup call like OSU-UM 2024, maybe Sark does the unthinkable and extinguishes his ego by at least letting Arch make a change to the play at the line. But his comments this week are concerning for a coach that's supposed to be elite and the guy who brings Texas back to the mountaintop.
3
1
u/Murky-Frosting-8275 6h ago
But dont forget Sark would've ruined him too. Nailed him down in the pocket and make sure he never runs. Make him 2nd guess himself and do dumb shit like pass the ball past the line of scrimmage, twice in one game.
20
u/Creative_Session2786 16h ago
In my opinion, I think he will come back. Trinidad Chambless would probably go ahead of Arch. Possibly even the QB at Oklahoma State, and Gunner Stockton as well. Might be a better decision to get some more experience.
22
3
u/rdickeyvii 13h ago
He needs more experience but not more of the same. There clearly needs to be some coaching changes both with the assistants and a real OC
1
1
u/DoubleG357 16h ago
And next years class would be much weaker too I’d assume.
This year is stacked.
1
u/Creative_Session2786 15h ago
Correct, and what about Dante Moore as well.
6
u/AppropriateCompany9 make em eat shit 15h ago
Dante Moore’s had an awful year thus far while healthy. I can’t imagine he’s serious competition for Arch in terms of draft position at this point.
0
u/I_Adore_Everything 7h ago
Who do you consider stacked? I don’t see any QBs killing it right now. I see big teams losing everywhere. I’m sure there are a few good ones but what makes it stacked?
-6
u/Own-Lavishness4029 16h ago
Gunner and Trinidad absolutely go before Arch. Haven't watched enough Oklahoma State yet.
22
u/imnotgoodatdis 15h ago
I really hope not. He doesn’t seem to be developing and it’s so fucking painful watching him. People can blame Sark all they want but I really do think it’s 75% blame on Arch.
Ewers had his own flaws but we saw him absolutely cook at times in this offense, Arch just isn’t a capable QB.
We’ve got two highly rated guys on our bench right now. I don’t want to risk losing them for another year of mediocre garbage on the offensive side of the ball.
6
u/Historical-Slice6369 13h ago
Agreed. One has to imagine that the Manning family has been developing Arch since the first moment he threw a football for this gig and he still struggles to adapt to what he sees on defense and forces plays that just aren't there.
In his defense, Cam Coleman and Ryan Wingo have made critical mistakes this season that have resulted in three and outs or turnovers. It's not like having Jeremiah Smith on the other end of the ball.
15
u/gmr548 16h ago
He probably should. He obviously struggles with the speed of the game still. QB and OL benefit most from an extra year. I don’t know if he will.
Does Texas want him back if he does though? I don’t know. He’s started 20 games. The evidence is mounting he’s simply not mentally capable of QB’ing a complex offense. However Sark would never live it down if Manning left for a system better suited for his strengths and lit it up, so I kind of think he would take him, even if it costs Lacey and or Bell.
Time will tell.
1
u/d1sportsball 6h ago
He did sacrifice Maalik, and I guess he got proven right as his career torpedoed. It wouldn't be shocking if he let KJ go as well (The middle man who can't afford another year on the bench, just like Maalik)
8
u/JuryTall1930 16h ago
Sark isn’t developing him to be able to play at the next level. I wonder if he does decide to go back to school, does he look elsewhere? The discourse on his development is not good and surely the family has opinions on that too.
12
u/hardgour 15h ago
It’s less arch problem and more of a sark problem. Sarks offense has been in a downward trajectory for years now. He took Quinn from elite to ok. And I’m afraid arch didn’t even get a chance to look elite. Sark has lost his offensive mojo
5
u/Timely-Fox-4432 14h ago
The way i've been explaining my views on sark is: he's a good ocord and a good HC, except when he has to do both things simultaneously, then he's average at best in both.
He's like a knob of butter spread over too much toast.
Then he has the call to shut down a reporter asking if he'd hire a playcaller without even acknowledging the validity of the question. Gimme a break lol.
I don't think it's 'fire sark' season, but if he won't replace the spec teams coord and won't get a play calling ocord, then he is the problem and needs to go. Muschamp is already here, maybe he could interim while we get a new staff in.
4
u/Administrative-Flan9 10h ago
"He's like a knob of butter spread over too much toast"
So he's Bilbo after carrying the one ring for like 70 years?
1
u/Forsaken_Block_5574 11h ago
Agreed. and to me the smart move is to transfer to anothrr school then get a real coach and excel, and improve his odds in the draft
5
u/TeacherFrequent 16h ago
Probably. He seems to love college and ATX. Unless he thinks he’ll develop better at the next level, I think he’ll be back. Should be a good thing assuming he improves. He’s still solid and well-liked.
4
u/AppropriateCompany9 make em eat shit 15h ago
The problem with that becomes keeping Dia Bell and, to a lesser extent, KJ Lacey.
2
5
u/countrytime1 11h ago
I’d like to see arch with a play caller that wasn’t a fool. Same for Ewers. Mike Leach would have them throwing for 6,000 yards a game.

u/azwethinkweizm Hook 'Em 13h ago
I took a lot of shit from people for saying Quinn was a 6th round talent only for him to be drafted in the 7th and now traded away to be the backup to a rising number one overall pick in Trevor Lawrence. I don't think Arch is drafted next year as it stands right now. He might go as a project pick where he sits behind a veteran for 6 years to learn. But as it stands right now, he's playing college football in 2027.
5
u/Ok_Calendar_6953 16h ago
Doesn't it come down to how much NIL Texas is willing to commit to him next year? (And, I guess, if there are any higher bidders out there...)
41
u/gmr548 16h ago
I think people consistently overestimate how money motivated he and his family are.
5
u/Fergi 16h ago
I know performance in sports is ultimately a meritocracy, but part of me wonders if being born set for life kind of robs him of a psychological edge. I agree that he's demonstrated that he's not trying to get rich playing college ball. I kind of wonder if that's somewhat of a disadvantage, even though that seems counterintuitive.
7
u/Wooden-Broccoli-7247 15h ago
I almost think he opposite. He is motivated to live up to the GIANT expectations and legacy. I think you’re right, money might not be AS big of a factor but also Eli and Peyton’s money isn’t his money. His dad has money but I don’t his kids just get millions out in their bank accounts. Also his dad doesn’t have Peyton or Eli money. Who knows how much grandpa has, probably the least of all of them. Football players weren’t paid even remotely close to what they are today back then, even in inflation adjusted dollars. However I’d imagine wanting to live up to the expectations is the biggest motivating factor. Imagine that family holiday and being the only person at it to play the position and not be a success and not be successful at it.
1
u/Single-Zombie-2019 14h ago
c'mon now. They are motivated by money. Otherwise, why sacrifice you and your kids' body and brains?
8
u/fridchikn24 15h ago
Arch took a big pay cut to bring guys like Cam Coleman and Hollywood Smother in. So money wouldn't be a deciding factor

u/Physical-Snow4387 16h ago
it all comes down to the money now, nil changed everything. if texas backs up the truck for him he stays, simple as that
but if some other school throws a bag at him and we got two 5 stars getting restless... yeah that door closes real quick
3
u/investmentbackpacker 15h ago
You guys don't know how this works with a celeb QB.... It's legacy for both sides. If he transfers out it looks like a failure for Texas whether in eval, development or both.
For the Mannings it's a gamble on a 1 year rental year at likely non-SEC school. The only place I could maybe see it work is Georgia where he wouldn't have to be the straw that stirs the drink since they would be an OL dominant offense focused on running the ball and play action deep which fits Manning's skill set.
1
u/AppropriateCompany9 make em eat shit 15h ago
Miami will be looking for a QB.
1
u/d1sportsball 6h ago
Miami would not bother with a guy like Arch. They'll either repeat what they did with Ward by going after Braden Atkinson or Marcus Stokes, or they'll steal a big name P4 QB that's actually good like Kamario Taylor or Mason Heintschel.
1
u/Ok_Calendar_6953 15h ago
It could very well end up a failure for both sides if he stays, fails to develop, and ends up UDFA. Wouldn't it be cleaner to say we needed to use our NIL for other reasons and keep Bell/Lacey?
0
u/Good_Split_3749 14h ago
I predict he’s going to go to a different school next year for $7 million dollars, somewhere dumb like tech
2
u/dayoneishuce 16h ago
We need an Offensive Coordinator more than anything, not to bye Felicia Arch Manning imo.
I'm almost there with Steve Sark though. I can't imagine Arch coming back with Sark still the HC/OC, he needs to give one of those titles up lol.

At this point, Arch is QB4 at best behind some order of Mensah, Chambliss, and Mestemaker. Kind of a coin toss between him and Moore. I don't get people saying Stockton. He's a very late pick at best

He will be quietly told to move on and enter the draft, just like Quinn was.
2

He should, but if he does i don't see lacey and bell staying for another year without seeing the field in any meaningful way. One way or the other we need to move on next season
2

If the season ended today, he’d have to come back.
I think it really depends on how he performs the next 7 weeks. If he’s at all decent, he’s gone.
1
u/VirusWithShoesGuy Hook 'Em 12h ago
I think the question is what he (or we) would expect out of him by returning. Will he progress further with another year? Because at this point he looks like he’s regressing. If we’re not developing QBs then what’s another year get everyone? It may be time to sit with the Mannings and kindly point them to the next step rather than entertain a return if we see mediocrity on the field. Will it hurt his draft stock? Sure but we need to focus on what keeps us winning and move forward.
1
u/mextizo 11h ago
I think sark wants to prove to everyone that he can do it all and thus refuses to hire an OC. I almost feel that if he wins the natty, then he will give himself permission to hire an OC. CDC has to force him to hire one. is there a better QB/OC coach out there that can develop in a year? better just to enter draft and develop professionally.

1
u/OnMyNerves23 11h ago
I know this sounds bad, but does anyone here want him to come back? Does it feel like he has improved YtY? He seems like a nice young man and doesn’t cause any issues besides the media surrounding him. Everyone has an opinion on him. That can’t be good for his mental health.
It also feels like the offense isn’t as complex as it usually is with him under center. Could be him or arch but, I’m not sure why Sark is now running a pro-style offense with a QB and possibly the line that can’t do it.

Not a Texas fan here but I think you might have some of it backwards, if yall make the playoffs & win a game or so, that likely means arch plays well which tends to lead to going pro. Vice versa for the other scenario. Either way, I am also interested to see how it plays out
1
u/AppropriateCompany9 make em eat shit 15h ago
I don’t envy Coach Sarkisian at all, because he’s gonna have to have this conversation at some point.
There’s been a lot of investment, both emotionally and financially, from Longhorn fans, boosters, and the athletics administration in this project working out. At best, the jury’s still out on whether we reach expectations.
As it stands, he’ll get drafted if he goes out, but late 1st/early 2nd with a notoriously badly managed team (like the Browns, Jets, or Cowboys, etc.) - but most other teams are probably looking to get him as cheaply as possible in the 4th or 5th rounds. His arm strength, pedigree, athleticism, and highlight reel will get him drafted if he really wants to make the jump. Just not as a top 10 kind of guy, as we were all expecting.
Everything I’m hearing/reading though suggests that his camp is leaning heavily toward another year of college ball.
I don’t know what I’d do in Sarkisian’s position, but luckily he’ll have the rest of the season’s results to help underpin whatever his choice is.
Right now, the dropoff between Arch and KJ Lacey isn’t a big one. Dia Bell is pretty likely to hit the portal if he isn’t given an honest chance to take the reins next season.
Arch might end up having to be a portal mercenary. I’m sure Ole Miss will be looking for a QB now that Trinidad will be gone, no question Miami is gonna wave a bag in front of him–what kind of QB wouldn’t want to play with that skill talent and o-line? It’s hard to imagine Arch’s window at Texas remaining open unless we have a close loss in the Natty game or something.

u/Timely-Fox-4432 14h ago
To add even more mud to the water, if I was Arch's agent I'd tell CDC Arch needs another year, but not under Sark.
I wouldn't be surprised if Dia bell transfers regardless of arch staying or going. This is our second multi-year highly rated quarterback who just doesn't seem to progress past their high-school level and might even be regressing a little. I can't imagine someone who every team wants like that stays.
At least Sark took some ownership in this week's presser, but tbh, I don't believe he actually thinks it's his fault, even though it is.
1
u/AppropriateCompany9 make em eat shit 14h ago
If the Manning family does that with CDC (and I don’t believe they will), he’s gonna tell them to fuck off immediately.
It would cost insane amounts of money ($36.5 million at this point) and create a ton of scandal around the program at a time when there are no clearly available head coaching upgrades. Losing Arch would probably save us a good deal of money.
2
u/Timely-Fox-4432 14h ago
Maybe he would, but they'd be right. 🤷♂️ sark is gonna cost us long term money either way cause he's just not tough enough to fire his friends.
That was one of the only two rules I had when one of my managers wanted to hire a friend: treat them like everyone else, and you have to be willing to fire them when they deserve it.
0
u/AppropriateCompany9 make em eat shit 14h ago
I think that his loyalty to himself and Kyle Flood may well get him fired eventually, it just won’t be soon unless we just … lose every game this season.
-1
u/No-Ebb8746 11h ago
Sark would have a high paying HC job where he can call shitty plays to his hearts conten t instantly if Texas axed him.
I guess he could be a cunt and take a OC NFL job making Texas responsible for nearly all of that money.
0
u/AppropriateCompany9 make em eat shit 11h ago edited 10h ago
I mean, yeah. I think it’s generally inadvisable to fire somebody who nearly any other program would hire immediately. To say nothing of how expensive it would be to do so.

u/tygrib 7h ago
Late first should generally have more good teams/organizations. Not sure why you’re asserting the opposite, nor why you’re speaking with such certainty about Mannings stock
1
u/AppropriateCompany9 make em eat shit 7h ago
Two of those three teams are pretty good right now. They’re still poorly managed. And I’m only speaking with certainty because I’ve paid close attention for a long time to how these sorts of things go. Of course, no one knows for sure, and I’m not pretending I do. I’m making an informed guess based on decades of knowing what I’m talking about.

If he plays another year, it won’t be at Texas unless Sark is gone or at minimum we have a dedicated OC and QB coach. Even BEFORE last season Arch was projected as 1:1 in the Draft. Assuming he cares about that, then it only makes sense to have another full year. If he doesn’t, he’s gone and he’ll still be a first rounder.
1
u/esalenman 15h ago
I hope not. You need a quarterback progression to recruit. If he comes back we probably lose other promising quarterbacks that might be gamers more than Arch.

Even if Arch has a mediocre season (which I am not saying he will), I think Arch should go pro (which I am not saying I want him to). He definitely has the NFL size and tools and if meh college QB like Mitchell Trubisky and Bo Nix can go 1st round...Arch should go. (Again, not saying that I would want him to. If he hasn’t got it together in 4 years (2 learning, and 2 being the starter) it’s hard to see him improving more next year. Sark needs to dump this style of offense he has and play a QB that fits it, screw pep style we need a winning college offense.

If he comes back next year we’re fucked. Him and special teams are holding us back majorly

He is not ready for the NFL. I won’t be surprised if he transfers, especially if things stay the same.

Should he not show much progression rest of the year then we need to make major changes to keep him or next year light it up elsewhere. His growth has stunted here as is.

He'll be back. He would be a fifth or sixth round draft pick at the moment. More money in college.

Unfortunately he will come back. He is a great athlete and has a good arm but his football IQ is horrible. He can’t call a pass protection and struggles to make reads.
I think Sark needs to go as well. I don’t think he has the back bone to truly RUN Texas. He seems to be very mellow. I fear he might not have as much say as most coaches due to the boosters having such a large impact on the roster.

i mean, given what he has shown so far. yes, he should.
the problem is he will be drafted based on potential and his last name alone. that might be enough to get him in at least the 3rd round.
the other problem is that he has shown little to no growth. im still waiting to see the electric arch we saw 2 years ago when he filled in for quinn briefly. so if he isnt getting better under sark, he might come back... but not at texas.
