I Built A Thing I made an open-source AI leaderboard that shows the best models your machine can run

Hey everyone, I made whatmodel.sh

To use it,

  1. Enter your RAM and GPU
  2. See what models you can run locally with its rank and the command to run it
  3. Compare them with API models on the same score

Building it made me realise a 32GB Mac can now run a model that scores on-par with GPT-5, completely locally and for free (e.g. Qwen3.8 27B at 4-bit).

Each model gets one score fitted across 19,731 published benchmark results, and every result links to its source. The method is at whatmodel.sh/method, and the data, scoring code and bench script are open source: github.com/jakemanger/whatmodel

It works from the terminal too: curl whatmodel.sh

If you'd like to contribute, there's a bench script to collect real-world tok/s and you can also submit any new models and benchmark scores along with their source on the github.

You can fetch the data we already have from https://huggingface.co/spaces/LocalLLaMA/local-model-explorer to make it better the dataset is also open - https://huggingface.co/datasets/LocalLLaMA/local-model-explorer-data

Thanks for suggesting the data! I've scraped so many but was missing this! Is super useful

Have added it as a feature request and will get onto adding it now: https://github.com/jakemanger/whatmodel/issues/6

Where is the 1GB of VRAM? 🥺

10

u/jakecoolguy 20h ago

That's rough bro!

Added 1, 2 and 4 for you. Will need to add more <1GB models as I think you will be left only with CPU and RAM options

(if anyone wants to recommend some with a github issue I would be hugely grateful)

7

u/Mihael--Keehl 19h ago

Can you also add 6GB VRAM option for those with 3050/4050 cards?

21

u/Final_Ad_7431 13h ago

these tools *always* undervalue MoEs (35b-a3b works shockingly good even on 8gb vram + 32gb system ram) and over estimate what fits on my system (27b absolutely does not run on 8gb vram unless i want 0.1 tok/s)

7

u/lungben81 12h ago

I have 24 GB VRAM and 64 GB RAM and Qwen flash next runs really well (60 t/s) with Strata, but according to the site it should only run slow.

However, great site!

2

u/WorldlyAd7946 11h ago

Is that on the VRAM?

2

u/lungben81 11h ago

Partially, the remaining experts are in RAM and the n-grams on SSD.

Strata optimizes which experts go to VRAM and uses both GPU and CPU simultaneously.

2

u/WorldlyAd7946 13h ago

Agreed 35b-a3b absolutely rocks on the snapdragon X lenovo mini pc (32gb LPDDR5) I just got for £300 - I'm getting 50+tok/s read and 20tok/s output on CPU inference 👍

u/rm2kfiles 12h ago

What models would you recommend for 8+32 for local agent coding tasks?

2

u/WorldlyAd7946 11h ago

I have had good results with python programming and this one (the coder variant of 35b-a3b)

2

u/Final_Ad_7431 4h ago

I agree with the other reply, qwen 3.6 35b-a3b or one of the finetunes (ornith, kat coder, you just have to try them and see how they feel for you) has been the best sweetspot for me, you have to look into offloading them properly though 'auto' settings on llamacpp these days is pretty solid in my experience, you can push it even further with one of the APEX quantizations to get more context and maybe a little more speed out of it too

How is it different from llmfit?

I see that it just lacks predictive TPS for hardware

6

u/jakecoolguy 21h ago

The biggest difference would be that whatmodel is for llms, image, video, tts and stt currently (and more types of models soon), while llmfit is more focussed on llms specifically.

That also looks like a tui whereas this is a site and can be used with curl. Thanks for sharing it. I didn't know that existed and looks pretty cool.

I'm currently trying to get TPS from crowdsourcing (there is a bench script users can run and it automatically helps them add github issues to contribute to the leaderboard).

Very cool, I have 2x 3080 20gbs and am already running Qwen 3.8. It would be interesting to include a custom ram/vram button as 40/80 GB is not a valid format.

2

u/jakecoolguy 15h ago

Thank you! Definitely would be a good idea, so will add it

3

u/ieatdownvotes4food 16h ago

very cool. nice work!

1

u/jakecoolguy 16h ago

Hope you find it useful!

3

u/-Sharad- 15h ago

Very slick! I like it

2

u/MikePounce 21h ago

when you click one of these, the "price" filter resets to "any"

1

u/jakecoolguy 21h ago

thanks for letting me know! Will fix that. Is a bit annoying

2

u/pasu11 21h ago

I will definitely try it out because I have a hard time figuring out which model to run locally.

2

u/jakecoolguy 21h ago

I found it pretty hard too and was the main reason for making this. Hope you find it useful

2

u/mechkbfan 21h ago

Whys there no 64GB for VRAM? e.g. 2xR9700 + 64GB RAM is great for Qwen Flash Next

2

u/jakecoolguy 20h ago

Just added it and 128gb!

2

u/Saintgein 20h ago edited 20h ago

I tested it for my system, it says i can run qwen 3.8 flash next through ollama, which was marked as slow. While i run it through strata which is actually really fast. Soon this mtp will also be available in llama.cpp btw. Maybe you can add this new technique to the mix, since i'm quite sure smart offloading into ram is the future for local models.

1

u/jakecoolguy 20h ago

That sounds really interesting! Haven’t heard of mtp yet and will add it as an option.

If you have any more ideas like this, please submit an issue or PR on the github and I can add it to the roadmap

1

u/Saintgein 20h ago edited 20h ago

You can read more about strata here: https://github.com/Niko1221/Strata and here's a video that explains it really well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0VHx73SAG0

Just a few models use this architecture, since it's much more efficient than loading entire models into vram or ram. It even uses ssd for some parts of the model. Qwen 3.8 flash next uses this as a preview of qwen 4, which is supposed to come out soon. I also read that a deepseek model supports this, but i haven't worked with that yet. The thing is that this makes me run a 125b model on my pc with about 100 token/s output. Which is really fast for a model that is loaded into ram for the most part.

2

u/jakecoolguy 20h ago

yeah that's super fast and useable. Was wondering exactly why qwen 3.8 flash next is so high up in the leaderboard with such little ram usage.

thanks for sharing the links. Will be using it

u/thibautrey 20h ago

Good stuff

1

u/jakecoolguy 16h ago

Thank you!

2

u/bluiz 19h ago

Great! Gave me a couple of new suggestions for tts models to try.

1

u/jakecoolguy 16h ago

Glad to hear!

u/LegendarySoulSword 16h ago

How are the RAM numbers calculated? You say they include context, but not how much. If it’s the model’s max context (e.g. 1M tokens), that would explain why a 4B model shows ~10 GB, which is misleading. Could you state the context size used, or add a slider for it?

2

u/thedogcow 16h ago

The RAM numbers look low to me, I'm assuming not full context. I would also like to know.

Also noticing the scores do not change with the quantization level, are the scores just for full precision? since it mixes them that could be misleading.

2

u/jakecoolguy 15h ago edited 15h ago

You're right for both. The scores are mostly full precision for now (depends on what the study or database provided and many weirdly don't even provide precision frustratingly enough).

I would like to improve that and hope others contributing can improve how quantisation reduces score. Not sure if I should have a score range in those cases or just on the model page, have each score for each quantisation (although that will require even more data)

1

u/jakecoolguy 15h ago edited 15h ago

Good point. It's not the max context and is an estimate from the download size and an approximate modest context. A context slider is a really good idea and I'll add it.

I also have a benchmark script on the site that I hope users can use to add more real-world data so those estimates aren't needed. If you have any data to share, each page has a contribute button to quickly add it

2

u/cinnapear 16h ago

I have two sparks. I'm not sure how to input them on your page.

2

u/jakecoolguy 16h ago

good point! just put in as "apple silicon" for now and set to 64gb or 128gb or 256 if you have 2 128gb sparks (whatever RAM you have). Apple silicon is also unified memory so will filter the same.

But will add a dedicated "unified memory" option for this

2

u/cinnapear 16h ago

Thanks for the quick reply!

1

u/jakecoolguy 15h ago

No worries. Hope you find a cool model!

2

u/hideo_kuze_ 13h ago

great stuff

but needs to include quantized models. I'm guessing 99% of us run quantized models

u/social_tech_10 13h ago edited 13h ago

I love this interface! It's simple and elegant. The info density is high, and it's based on live, open, crowd-sourced data. What's not to love? It let's you drill down gracefully to unpack deeper levels of detail. The fit and finish on the TUI may be the icing on the cake, but I think the TUI aesthetic is just a hint for those paying attention that the real gem baked inside is the curl interface.

The author has clearly put a lot of thought and effort into this project, and I love the style!

1

u/jakecoolguy 7h ago

I’m glad you like it! Wanted it themed like a terminal

2

u/charlespreuss 10h ago

I'm confused, it told me justice to run qwen 27b but I only have 12gb vram on my graphics card? Maybe I did something wrong.

2

u/jaybsuave 9h ago

reminds me of canirunit for video games, super cool

2

u/Redditburd 5h ago

How are yall running 19GB models on 16Gb of Vram. I'm missing something huge.

The recommendations on this page are useless to me.

1

u/Shermington 57m ago

You keep remaining chunk in ram and either swap or use cpu for computation. It's typically much slower due to lower ram bandwidth. For llm you need to read all weights each token, so if you have 20gb model and 40 gb/s ram speed, you will get 2 t/s max.

2

u/JustLovett0 2h ago

Great site, I love it. Can there be a definition of what (slow) means? Is that sub 30 tok/s, or whats the goal for a non-slow?

1

u/jakecoolguy 56m ago

Right now that means it fits using plain old RAM instead of VRAM or unified memory, and that can be overridden if I get a data point saying someone ran X model using the same or a smaller RAM/VRAM combo

However, I'm working on revamping that to account for approaches like strata. If you have any suggested improvements or additions for the data there's also contribute buttons everywhere

4

u/Perfect-Campaign9551 18h ago edited 17h ago

Why do you even have Closed models on this? You don't need to care about RAM or GPU in that case. Once you turn on "RAM" or "GPU" values it should immediately filter all closed models from the list...I shouldn't even have to select "Local" it should do it automatically once you've selected any of the ram or gpu values.

It's also wrong anyway because it says I can run Qwen 3.8 Next Flash 2 bit for my configuration, but I'm able to run 3 bit just fine (using Strata)

2

u/DangerousReward1411 17h ago

Because its useful to know alternatives and how they rank on the list? Also have you never heard of YMMV? Its brilliant to say that something works for your configuration without stating said configuration

1

u/Perfect-Campaign9551 16h ago

Um you are literally choosing your configuration on the website.

4

u/jakecoolguy 16h ago edited 15h ago

Main reason is for a comparison (is this as good as GPT-4, 5, 6 etc). And I agree the local not being immediately selected is a bit confusing there. Changing that behaviour now.

Each page can be contributed to. If you can run 3-bit please click the model page and contribute.

The reason it won't be there is literally i couldn't find a public source saying it can. And I'm trying to crowdsource the data to add missing info like this, so any help is much appreciated

2

u/ij123zhasd 12h ago

I like this. E.g. I can see that a local model I can run is similar to Sonnet 4.6 for example, this comparison actually helps me way more than just seeing an some score.

2

u/social_tech_10 14h ago

Just click "Local" on the Price to filter out all of the API models.

1

u/IntelArtiGen 19h ago edited 19h ago

I like these projects but this one doesn't work well with all browsers. Also as others pointed out if you add tps it would be perfect.

1

u/jakecoolguy 16h ago

is this on mobile you're getting issues? Would be really useful to know so i can fix.

Just released it today so am wary of issues like this

1

u/dennisbgi7 15h ago

does it not work for dual gpu setups?

1

u/jakecoolguy 15h ago edited 14h ago

should do. The best approximate will be from putting in your total VRAM amount after selecting graphics card.

If you have any ideas, different commands or workflows you usually need to run for dual, please contribute with a github issue (links are everywhere on the site)

1

u/Tieng 14h ago

i understand that benchmarks show that qwen 3.8 27b can match opus but does it do so *at 4 bit quant?*

1

u/BryarGh 14h ago

Thanks for the share, I'm going to write an article about Qwen 3.8 27B 4bit, it will be very useful for you then..

1

u/PotentialAccident339 13h ago

havent there been 100 of these that got stood up and then abandoned? i bet there's one telling me that llama 3.1 is the best i can do

1

u/Moarkush 10h ago

This tool completely ignores Blackwell (nvfp4) or N-GRAM RAM offload.

1

u/abajinn 21h ago

This looks like LLMfit

1

u/overthetop2017 18h ago

where is ranking of decision models

-1

u/jakecoolguy 16h ago

do you mean reasoning/thinking models? If so, they're on the main page and pick "agent tasks". But i'll make this clearer as clearly not that obvious

1

u/overthetop2017 12h ago

I meant like Jev

1

u/openroom_xyz 17h ago

Well can you even do anything useful with 2 x RTX 3090 and 128 Gb DD4 Ram can you build software with this or basically well not even worth building what do you suggest ?

1

u/jakecoolguy 16h ago

yeah you should be able to run a variant of Qwen3.8 27B I believe (e.g. with ollama, llama.cpp or lm studio). That should likely be the best model. And is similar to something like GPT-5 in performance from benchmarks

1

u/openroom_xyz 15h ago

Well currently I am using modified version of strata running the qwen 3.8 Flash Next but yea

1

u/Imaginary-Unit-3267 8h ago

How is this different from llmfit, which already exists?

-1

u/Equivalent_Bit_461 21h ago

Why it's always slop like this and almost never cool projects

3

u/social_tech_10 14h ago

Do you have anything positive to contribute? Please share a link to a cool project, bonus points if it's yours.

-1

u/Equivalent_Bit_461 12h ago

My project is far from ready since it's not slop vibe coded in an afternoon on Claude, so yeah, I'm gonna criticise when I see trash

1

u/zovix 9h ago

You're in a LLM sub. It's like your complaining about people eating pie in a bakery.

-1

u/Equivalent_Bit_461 9h ago

There's good sloppa and there's bad sloppa, knowing the difference can save your life

1

u/social_tech_10 1h ago

I think you misunderstood my question. Please name a project, by anybody, that you feel is worthy of of praise.

-1

u/cleverusernametry 16h ago

I see Claude written stuff used as is, I just disengage and mentally file this under low effort/slop
