Musical Guest Just rewatched a 2019 episode featuring Greta Van Fleet and the whole performance looks like a bit by Marcello.

Colin Jost twisted the knife by joking about them on Update right after the performance. “Sunday night will bring a Super Blood Wolf Moon, which is a rare lunar eclipse, and not, as I had assumed, the name of the band that just performed on our show.”

Actually not a bad sketch idea, have Marcello front a weird 70s band that sucks but is really into it...

u/ThinStrategy1974 13d ago
And Mikey day could be in the audience saying “this guy is WEIRD” and explain every joke.

I remember these dudes were very hyped up and already very divisive by the time they got SNL.
Watched their performance live when it aired and it felt like they had negative charisma on stage.
Watching this now, and it's actually not as bad as I remember.

u/Nicklord 13d ago
I watched them at a festival in 2024. They got better as performers and stopped sounding (completely) like Led Zeppelin. I think they're still touring big venues, even if the mainstream and the internet forgot about them
10
u/regdunlop08 13d ago
Saw them at a festival in '22. I remember when the lead singer wasn't involved (I.e. extended instrumental parts) they were blowing me away, musically. And when he commanded the stage he was distracting at best and annoying at worst. He just irked me. Looked like if my first landlord tried to cosplay early Prince*.
*(Only my wife could truly appreciate the visual of that, but trust me it's fucking weird.)

u/Savings-Monitor3236 It's fobody's nault! 12d ago
I also saw them in 2024 and had a similar experience. They leaned all the way in to being ridiculous with spaceships and glitter and Rick Wakeman-approved capes and I thought the show was pretty good. They were still just kids when this aired. I put them in in a similar basket as Lana Del Ray who also had a rough outing on SNL. This dogpile that they always seem to attract is exhausting

u/Michael_G_Bordin 13d ago
Good for them, but the biting Led Zeppelin pissed me off. They didn't sound like Zep, they just had a screeching vocalist and played hard rock. After Zep debuted, there were dozens of screeching heavy knock-offs that mostly sucked. In that camp, GVF isn't actually that bad, and I'm glad to hear they're still going. The novelty wore off, but being able to keep it going after that point is a testament to their capabilities. I don't like them, but I can appreciate what they're doing as someone who both loves hard rock and has played in hard rock bands. It's a tough genre to break out in (cuz, let's be honest, basically no one gives a fuck).

u/Automatic-Grocery338 13d ago
I don't think it was the sound for me, but the singers gestures while singing were a straight rip off of Robert Plant and then the dude says he never listened to Zeppelin before.
22
u/CharlemagneIS 13d ago
That last part. That’s what really pissed me off.
3
u/Dolanite 13d ago
They were a LZ cover band in high school and answered the same Led Zeppelin question a hundred times, then they finally said "who is Led Zeppelin?" and that made you angry?

I’m a pretty big fan of Greta for that reason. It’s not that they are the best rock and roll band of all time it’s that it’s 2026 and they are here making rock and roll when so many have bowed out to other genres. I will support them as long as they continue to make music…. Also as far as I know they’ve kept their noses clean. Zeppelin cannot say the same.

u/PotentialDeadbeat 12d ago
Thanks for this, your comment reflected my view as well. Big Zep fan and I felt at least for a song or two, GVF took me back to 1976 FM radio. I felt they were s homage, not a rip off.

Even though led Zeppelin ripped off dozens of songs and riffs before them?
7
8
u/Michael_G_Bordin 13d ago
Completely different category of problem. Led Zeppelin didn't rip off anyone's sound. Hell, before them, no rock band was as loud and aggressive, not even Sabbath. I didn't accuse GVF of ripping off other's people lyrics or melodies. I accused them off ripping off Zep's vibe.
As for Led Zeppelin "ripping off" other artists, people playing other people's music is, historically speaking, the norm for music. Zep went wrong by not giving proper credit where it was due, which was corrected via the legal system. It's also not like that's the only thing they did, it just took Robert Plant like 3-4 albums to figure out how to write lyrics.

Jimmy Page stole from black blues musicians left and right. You're off your rocker man
I like a lot of Led Zeppelin's music but in no way do I think they're the band to get sanctimonious about originality
1
u/5centraise 12d ago
Jimmy Page stole from black blues musicians left and right.
This is true. You know who else did? Willie Dixon, one of the main guys LZ stole from, and who was the one to beat them in court over it. Dixon's theft was arguably worse and more evil than Zeppelin's, as the way he did it was by "taking care of the paperwork" for inexperienced, often illiterate musicians who brought songs to Chess Records to record. Dixon would put his name on session sheets, giving himself songwriting credit.
Don't believe me? Ask Buddy Guy. He talks about it in his memoir.

u/Michael_G_Bordin 12d ago
I'm not sure if you're just a lazy reader or of poor comprehension, but I addressed that fact pretty directly, if not quite so explicitly. I certainly did not dismiss or ignore it in the slightest. Nor did I sanctimoniously defend the originality of Led Zeppelin. Misplaced righteous indignation is a good dollar, though. You should try to monetize your hot take, I'm sure no one's ever heard it before.

u/Alfie_Shydog 13d ago
Good to hear. I lost track of them after those early years. Will check out their new stuff.
1
u/YogurtclosetDull2380 12d ago
The only (unconfirmed) truth here is that you saw them in 2024 the rest is unquestionably false and immune to opinion.
17
u/cuatrodemayo 13d ago
I remember taking bass lessons at the time and at the studio, the instructors were all talking about how low Pitchfork rated their debut album. Felt like the most “High Fidelity” moment ever.

u/scooter-411 13d ago
The lead singer was not hitting the notes when they performed live. Their recorded stuff is so much more tolerable.
12
u/cogginsmatt 13d ago
They were from the area I grew up in and I was in music circles as they came up. Everyone hated them. Spoiled rich kids with an awful sound that would bail on like half their gigs to go on yacht trips.
7
u/Earptastic 13d ago
I honestly first saw them on SNL and thought they were great. Then I hear about how everyone was talking smack on them and was confused.
7
u/_SmashLampjaw_ 13d ago
They're the worlds absolute best Zeppelin tribute band.
I think some of their songs are pretty good, but they're obviously not playing an original sound.

It was insane to watch live. I couldn’t believe it and I’m still shocked they tried to pull that off

The singer of Greta Van Fleet looks like if a man and a woman had a baby

u/wormbreath 13d ago
This is how I first heard of Greta van fleet and now they are one of my favorite bands. I didn’t even know people thought it was that bad until way later lmao

u/DarklySalted 13d ago
I've re watched the little clip trying to figure out what he's singinig about 100 times. It's so funny to me.

u/tyler-86 13d ago
He looks like some kind of cross between Marcello and Pete Davidson. I think it's all the stoned smirking he's doing.
8
u/mailboatcustomarr 12d ago
Thanks for reminding me that this shit existed. One of the most annoying performances I have ever seen.
29
u/imadragonyouguys 13d ago
I remember seeing them and thinking "damn hobbitcore sure is something."
10
u/DeNomol0s 13d ago
I think they have songs that sound zeppelin-inspired, I remember hearing the lead singer in an interview say that he had never heard Led Zeppelin when the band was formed and I call some heavy BS on that.
3
u/doesanyonekno 13d ago
Nah, iirc they mentioned being Zeppelin inspired for ages until one interview where they cited aerosmith as being another influence. Then the commenters were livid they omitted the obvious LZ answer.
unless you're talking about the satirical article lol
12
u/Pgh_VW_Fan 13d ago
I actually like GVF but I have to admit this is the worst performance of theirs ever. They had just performed a few months earlier on the Tonight Show and brought the house down.
6
u/Nerdmitage 13d ago
It's a few times now someone I like has come on SNL and completely biffed it. Role Model last year was one. He's actually quite good but both performances he biffed it HARD. Was very awkward to watch because I've seen him live and he can sing, but damn not that day. Must have been extreme nerves.
6
u/claravarner 13d ago
That SNL performance was my introduction to Tucker, and I was dumbfounded as to how he got a record deal. Months later, I saw a video of him from a concert and couldn't believe it was the same person.
3
u/Nerdmitage 13d ago
Yeah it was one of those 😳 moments as a fan. Live tv must be next level nerve wracking.

Oof, the cringe. I remember it feeling like they dressed up in grandpa's clothes from the attic and were auditioning for the part of a band in a movie set back then. Extra bonus weird points for the twitchy lead singer.

Saw them live in concert (tix were cheap). We left early to beat the traffic home.

I was at the gym a few weeks ago and over the intercom I hear this song and think to myself "holy shit this is the worst Led Zeppelin song I've ever heard." But here's the thing: I love Led Zeppelin and have every album memorized, or at least I thought I did. Maybe this is some alternate version of some obscure track off of Coda or something?
They have this bespoke music video system that lists the names of the artists who play on the TVs so I went over to check. It was Greta Van Fleet.

I get the criticism, but I’ll take this over a lot of SNL musical acts. We all have our likes and dislikes.
I’m not a huge fan, but I like Highway Tune.
5
u/RealHotThroatLA 13d ago
They were just on Kimmel, and honest to God:
They performed a song that had no redeeming qualities to it.
Wasn't rock 'n roll, wasn't interesting, and literally had no hook to it.
And that singer is just creepy and has NO stage presence.
How these guys remain signed after their first album is beyond me.

Nothing at all tops the ridiculous performance last year by Role Model. Geese was an acquired taste too. But Role Model just felt like a bad skit

God I love this bit of culture.
There was a whole tiktok trend of the "where.we've.bin." reflexive nod "won't you hold my hand and stay a woy-uhl" look down with closed eyes section

HWWELP! This is one of my favorite performances to poop on
I love when he's waving the mic around in front of his face while trying to get that reverb sound. Looks like he's having a real good time...
2
u/DrBoogerFart 12d ago
The problem with this band is they don’t suck while also not acknowledging that they’re just cosplaying Zeppelin which sucks. I’m out.
1
u/EntropicPoppet 12d ago
I was really confused when everyone went crazy of GVF for a minute but Wolfmother, who also drew a bunch of Zeppelin comparisons, got dragged for it and relegated to obscurity.
I guess my complaints were premature because I haven't heard about GVF in a good while.
2
u/CarlosLuis23 12d ago
It was the hype from "Highway Tune" and he having such a similar voice with Robert Plant. I believe at the time Robert Plant himself said the band was Led Zeppelin 1 and that the singer "borrowed" his voice.
1
u/Grootfan85 11d ago
To be fair, Highway Tune has a 10/10 success rate for getting you hyped for any occasion.

they arent the worst musical guests, cause there’s absolutely been some real shit music on the show in the last five years (I mean, remember role model?), but they are just so goddamn lame. Remember when they tried to insist they never listened to Led Zeppelin and didn’t understand why people were always comparing them?

I haven't heard anything about them in years. Wasn't a fan of the blatant Zeppelin ripoff.

That for me is the example of who I was just starting to notice but then saw them on SNL and lost interest. You get plenty of “..who is this? Oh cool!” But I had heard the band that sounded just like Led Zeppelin and decided it might be pretty cool. Then saw it was a band of hobbits and was like “…yeah no…”
-4
u/Profitsofdooom 13d ago
Anyone who said this band sounds like Led Zeppelin doesn’t have working ears.

Love them or hate them, these guys more musical talent than most modern groups (barring good metal bands). Singer’s got insane chops and they don’t rely on pre recorded shit

This was the one and only time I was selected for the lottery. I drove overnight to be at the show, Rachel Brosnahan hosted. Alec Baldwin and Mulaney made appearances. We sat beside GVF’s parents. Terrible episode, coolest experience of my life
