They should’ve at least had a silent card at the end of the show

363

u/InternationalPhoto33 Jan 25 '26

Having said that I still think their finest moment was the children’s choir singing silent night the day after Sandy Hook

237

u/Prestigious_Ad_5825 Jan 25 '26

I think SNL has trouble striking the right tone. The sketches are either too somber and self-serious (Kate McKinnon at the piano) or too flippant (the Trump awards). SNL should refrain from doing these topical bits until it figures out the right approach.

Their 9/11 return episode cold open with the first responders hit the right note. Lorne asks Giuliani if it was okay to be funny again, to which he replied with a shrug “why start now?”

159

u/I_make_things Jan 25 '26

Fuck Giuliani.

100

u/Otherwise_You_1603 Jan 26 '26

It takes incredible talent to have a massive amount of sympathy from the general public after a tragic event- Giuliani post 9/11, Christie post huricane sandy, Roman Polanski post the manson murders- and still find a way to make everyone hate you lol

35

u/jawisi Jan 26 '26

tbh Christie has kinda sorta navigated the second round okay. I mean, in an enemy-of-my-enemy way. But still.

I liked the post-2024 election cold open where they pretended to suck up to Trump out of fear, it's funnier than Hillarylujah but still conveys their actual opinion (Trump is a petty tyrant and everyone is scared of his second term).

43

u/ratstronaut Jan 26 '26

That open was a perfect example of doing it right. I do get how hard it must be, but we’ve all seen that they CAN get it right.

aw I loved the McKinnon piano song. I remember being comforted by it actually back then.

Same, people always lambast it I truly thought I was the only person in the world who actually felt moved/cried forever lol

I think people were more cynical since SNL had had Trump host around that time which contributed to his playful image (far more damning than whatever they're doing now tbh).

Same – and a lot of people forget it was the week Leonard Cohen died, which is partly why that particular song was chosen.

6

u/justveryslightlymad Jan 26 '26

That had actually completely slipped my mind. I still don’t love it but I’m seeing it in a much more sympathetic light now, thanks for the context.

5

u/UltraFinePointMarker Jan 26 '26 edited Jan 27 '26

Given everything else that's happened in the near-decade since then, forgetting that detail is understandable.

Though on a lighter note, I did a quick search to see if Leonard himself ever appeared on SNL ... and instead found this sketch from last year 😁

3

u/cherrypkeaten Jan 26 '26

I never knew that! I also really loved it.

Yeah, I’m not really sure you can make it funny when the government is actually doing fascism. Like murdering concentration camps fascism. What makes it more challenging is the man is already a clown. So they have to parody an evil demonic clown who is also somewhat funny himself. It’s basically impossible to do it right.

Some small thing that that, that’s all I expect. Changing the entire ripening monologue in less than 12 hours is an absurd ask. The show should’ve gone on as written, that makes sense to me.

But there are small, unplanned things that you can do like this that get the message across and say “we’ve got more for next week, we just couldn’t adapt this week in a responsible way.”

I couldn’t have written a single new joke yesterday. I don’t blame anyone who couldn’t. But do SOMETHING.

8

u/plant_magnet Jan 26 '26

The timing of the shooting put SNL in a bad spot. Having less than a day to write a whole new cold open about a situation that is still developing is nigh impossible.

I do agree they should've done something though.

3

u/Other-Razzmatazz-816 Jan 27 '26

Open to Host on stage: “hey, We had a cold open planned and it didn’t feel right after what happened today”…Commentary. Segue into host intro, lifting mood after acknowledging the shit. That’s it,

Some of the cast could have worn a Be Good button or a Minnesota t-shirt at the closing. I guess that could be seen as performative, but at least it would show that some of them are aware of what's happening.

33

u/Used-Gas-6525 Jan 25 '26

Of course it's performative. They are performers with no political power. They could at least perform like a human being would and show some fucking respect for the dead.

9

u/maxemum Jan 26 '26

It’s a tv show. Literally everything they do is performative????

Part of me thinks they expected to have bad ratings due to the weather (possible widespread power outages) anyway

1.1k

u/gggrandma321 Jan 25 '26

It’s not just this week though. I swear the Christmas episode you could hear a pin drop because no one was laughing. If they stop doing these sketches week to week, it’s not going to be because of any sort of political reason but instead because of how demoralizing it is to whoever is in that sketch

517

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '26

This shits only a joke if you are an insulated rich person that doesn’t have to deal with these issues. I don’t think anything about this administration is cute and funny

173

u/SweetandSourCaroline Jan 25 '26

Right??? I told my boomer mom count your blessings these policies don’t affect you but they sure as hell affect your two daughters!!!

61

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '26

It’s going to only make all of our lives worse. Rich people are going to make are going to benefit in the short term but we only have one planet for them to destroy.

Anyone that thinks this isn’t going to affect them is willfully ignorant or an actual dumb dumb. Or the vindictive conservatives that are also going to be negatively effected but get off on watching “libs” get shot

9

u/ChironiusShinpachi Jan 25 '26

It's self loathing, for anyone wondering. You can't take pleasure in others misery without self loathing unless you're a psychopath. It's hardwired in, which is why you have to dehumanize people, spreading propaganda to make people good with doing the bad.

You can try to lie to yourself, but your brain knows what you really think, how you really feel. Like when you act angry with people you feel like crap afterwards, but when you do something good you feel good. Like when you flex on someone but they didn't flinch, you can say you were badass to anyone you want, but you know they didn't flinch, and you know you weren't badass. You can't lie to yourself.

19

u/JohnnyHopkins77 Jan 25 '26

Responding with “Human and constitutional rights are only political if you’re in Russia/Israel” works every time

55

u/No_Use_9652 Jan 25 '26

There was also a significant number of people who said in 2016 “wouldn’t it be funny to just see what happens?” so yeah, the humor of the situation is pretty dried up.

61

u/PlumChrysanthemum Jan 25 '26

it's crazy that in 2015 I told my parents that all of this shit was going to happen and they said "no way, we'd stop him wayyyyyy before it got to that point!" and now they're celebrating concentration camps and cheering on the deaths of innocent people

genuinely no idea how to move on from this without ending it all

19

u/AppropriateSpite7881 Jan 25 '26

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by " ending it all". Stranger to stranger... I couldn't imagine my parents believing in this diabolical evil BS, please don't do any self harm , or any harm . Reach out . I'm here if you need an ear. Life is really difficult for most of us that have empathy and can't believe this is America.

Stay strong! No matter what happens. You're on the right side of History, imo! Sending you a hug.

My parents are dead otherwise this may be my reality also. I really empathize with you.

It's like telling cancer jokes at a children's hospital.

Yeah, I don't doubt your ability to construct a joke and deliver a punchline... but it's not actually funny right now and it takes a self-centered, clueless jerk to think the audience might appreciate jokes about the thing killing their loved ones.

And it's not ours. It never has been, and more importantly, never will be.

15

u/wrosecrans Jan 25 '26 edited Jan 25 '26

Lorne is clearly one of those guys who still thinks of himself as an upstart punk rebel in his internal narrative because of what he was doing 50 years ago, and deep down I think think he can't really think of himself as a member of the "establishment."

20

u/SweetandSourCaroline Jan 25 '26

THIS. This is what I’m trying to get through to all the repubs in my sphere, and all the black folks who usually vote dem but didn’t vote for kamala thinking trump would make them rich cause they got a $1,400 check during a once in a lifetime global epidemic.

33

u/Turbulent_Tale6497 Jan 25 '26

Lorne might be on the list.

15

u/Plus-Pomegranate8045 Jan 25 '26

South Park does a much better job of mocking fascism because they treat it with the malice and horror that it is while still being absurd enough to actually be funny.

As a Minneapolis resident, I wasn't hurt by this sketch. I wasn't even particularly surprised. It was just not funny and way too inoffensive for the kind of dire situation that they have put us in up here. Everyone is grieving, afraid for their lives, and some of us are on search for a cathartic release and I think SNL really missed the mark here.

41

u/jmpinstl Jan 25 '26

Listen, I get that we need comedy in times like this. I woke up to the news that Alex Pretti was murdered in cold blood in broad daylight. I was distraught all day yesterday. I’ve been watching SNL so far this season and due to what happened yesterday I decided to tune out because one of us, a regular person, with a life, a career, a family and many beloved colleagues and friends was killed as a result of practicing his fundamental rights. I get that laughter is healing but I didn’t want to see or hear anyone making light of the current regime as it is not funny anymore. Yes, make fun of them while they’re in office, as they commit heinous crimes in front of our eyes, in broad daylight, for the world to see… but have some compassion for a life that was lost so horribly and whose reputation is questioned and tarnished in the media after his murder. If Alex Pretti was one of your loved ones, would you have still watched SNL and found it funny last night?

37

u/grillest-pigger Jan 26 '26

To be fair, it's been "not funny anymore" for way too long.

As an outside observer, it seems that every month something crazy happens in the US that makes people go "well this is the tipping point, surely", only to be outdone with something crazier the next month, but the point never tips.

On any given week, the emotions may be high, but it's hard for the show to tell whether it will form a lasting memory, or be completely lost to time (like I'm not a Witch). Having watched how the country moved on from Jan 6th, it's hard to blame them.

7

u/JohnCavil Jan 26 '26

I think a lot of Americans are, or have been, so disconnected from what their country does that it's easy to laugh at it. Laughing at Greenland or Venezuela or Iraq, or Canada is easier, then when ICE executes someone in the street the half of the country who still thought it was funny stop laughing. Welcome to the club.

Haha Trump says he will invade Canada. Tee-hee Trump will build a skyscraper on Greenland, lols America just bombed nuclear facilities in Iran. Whoops Trump just ruined the economy of some small country, what a goof.

I actually think it could be funny if something was being done about it. But the fact that nothing really happens and everyone just sort of stares at the trainwreck makes it really hard to laugh. A monkey driving a car is funny, until you're going down the highway and the monkey is literally holding the steering wheel. I think a lot of people just detach completely from the situation and treat the whole thing as this abstract thing, like TV show or something, and can't actually understand how this isn't just something that happens on TV or TikTok, but real things ruining peoples lives.

3

u/Jphoenix7x Jan 26 '26

Totally get that… the world must think we’re a sado-masochistic society.

5

u/SomeonesLostWallet Jan 26 '26

u/kathmhughes Jan 25 '26

u/IheartPandas666 Jan 25 '26

I got lornes bio for Christmas. I’m having a really hard time having any interest in the man. He literally lives in a castle above everyone else and has no fucking clue what’s going on. First chapter he reprimands Cecily for having a political opinion.

92

u/RellenD Jan 25 '26

First chapter he reprimands Cecily for having a political opinion.

Wow

61

u/dammit_dammit Jan 25 '26

That's wild -- comedy and politics can be so powerful when handled correctly, and she is someone who I think was very skilled at that. Cecily's "Goober the Clown on Abortion" was one of the best pieces on the show in recent memory for me. I'd never seen anything like it and the way she threaded that needle was jaw dropping.

48

u/Top_Specific8490 Jan 25 '26

What would the creator of the show think of his legacy being tarnished by that bastard?

74

u/CharleyNobody Jan 25 '26

Lorne has been rich and famous since he won an Emmy Award in 1973. More than half a century. I remember when him and his whole SNL crew piled into Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett with all the rock stars of the time (1970s), vacuuming up piles of cocaine and believing they were the coolest, hippest people in the universe. Look at them now, paying off Donald Trump. Hell, their kids all went to private schools, birthday parties and on vacation with the Trumps, the Milkens, the Rockefellers.

Paul McCartney, another Amagansett resident, is now married to the daughter of a NJ trucking mobster and her ex husband is the far rightwing Republican Nassau County executive Bruce Blakeman. Blakeman recently announced he’s was going to put wall-to-wall security cameras at the Queens/Nassau County border because a Muslim democratic socialist had been elected mayor of NYC. McCartney is now stepdad to that guy’s son.

Times gave changed. The cool antiestablishment people of the 1970s now bow down to someone worse than Nixon and have great grandchildren who are 3rd generation inherited wealth and fame who grew up going to same schools and partying on same yachts with the oligarchy

20

u/Cantstop-wontstop1 Jan 25 '26

The 'counterculture' generation of the 70s grew up to be the most conservative generation in america since the great awakening.

9

u/Madock345 Jan 25 '26

It’s because the counterculture movement was a minority movement. A subculture. A very successful and later romanticized one, but actually most people that age were always conservative. Live somewhere like Arizona and you’ll still pretty frequently meet old hippies, they didn’t grow out of it to become boomer stereotypes.

I think right now when we’re evaluating people to be on the good side or the bad side the best approach might just be who’s against Trump and who isn’t simple as that because numbers tell us we make up 70% or more but that 70% spends an excessive amount of time pointing fingers at one another

There have been so many "cut for time" sketches that have been consistently better than everything that aired. To have this out there in front is so fucking tacky.

It’s really disgusting frankly. It’d be funny if it wasn’t just yapping. Show his purple hands exploding with blood, show him fat and uncoordinated, show him in cognitive decline. Not just JAJ getting lazier with it by the week.

There are plenty of subversive dark jokes happening about Trump and even ICE that are funny. I saw a tiktok that was “When you sneeze near an ICE agent and they turn you into the next movement” which made me laugh. SNL is just being pathetic about it.

101

u/LieDry7854 Jan 25 '26

As they should be. There’s nothing funny about a guy who is actively trying to destroy people livelihood.

72

All of these "blasted" articles pull the most random X users to prove their point lol

14

u/Sunnydocny Jan 25 '26

Yes, it was disgusting of SNL considering that two people have died within the past month from gunfire from ICE thugs.

5

u/Elegant_Holiday1234 Jan 25 '26

100%. I really think they should have gone dark last night. Timberwolves canceled their game. Everything should fucking stop for this level of terror and tragedy, or we make it like it’s BAU, the move cycle moves along, etc. Putting on a “comedy” show where you’re trying to make a joke of the president who’s already a joke was simply not it. We actually don’t need to laugh through this or find a way to make it light, we need to stop and make everyone focus on the situation at hand.

3

u/Sunnydocny Jan 25 '26

I agree. I think SNL making fun of this is simply normalizing this horrible brutal behavior. We must not just make fun of it, we must protest against it and scream at the top of our lungs that this is not right until something is done to stop it.

SNL can't muster an anti-Trump joke more biting than the average person commenting on SNL being unfunny.

If SNL just held on a card that said "Trump isn't funny" it'd be meaner and funnier than any of their jokes.

76

u/News-Royal Jan 25 '26

The sTrump skits are getting OLD, and even worse, unfunny.

51

u/MidnightAltas Jan 25 '26

It's just too hard to joke about. The man (Trump) was directly responsible for the murder of a peaceful observer, ICU nurse yesterday.

What are we joking about? With Trump doing fascist murder stuff every day, then every single day is a "too soon" day to make a Trump joke.

8

u/sumerislemy Jan 25 '26

It’s not too hard, they just spineless about it.

As soon as I saw the cold open was about Trump again, I shut that shit off. SNL had an opportunity to address what is happening in this country and instead they keep pushing luke warm parodies of Trump. There is nothing to laugh about and joke about anymore when the reality is so evil.

10

u/Myis Jan 26 '26

Not a fan of Che saying “shooting at a nurse” when it’s murdering a nurse.

20

u/IWasOnThe18thHole Jan 25 '26

The sad thing is there is a good number of people who are blind to politics and this is their only exposure to Trump. They are going so soft with the satire that even Sutler from V for Vendetta wouldn't bother getting upset.

3

u/lemurlad13 Jan 26 '26

You really think someone who has access to TV, or videos on the Internet, this is their only exposure to Trump? I'm ambivalent to the argument that SNL is obligated to use the opening as a soapbox to Reddit's views, but that's just silly.

They need to go way more meta with the Trump impressions. Allude to all the crazy news media just regurgitating straight insane lies from the White House as one side of a complicated issue. Like they could make it obvious their version of Trump is how Trump would like to see himself parodied rather than an actual insightful parody. Because while I think to a certain point they have been allowed to continue because of its relatively benign impression, it is getting too safe by far.

10

u/mutant_anomaly Jan 25 '26

They portray him as energetic and coherent.

8

u/flojo2012 Jan 25 '26

I understand it’s hard to keep up with something that just happened. But maybe ditch the weekly Trump jokes. Everyone has a Trump impersonation. It’s not funny anymore. It’s easy. It’s low hanging fruit. Move on

7

u/External-Parsley-280 Jan 25 '26

They need to stop these. There is nothing funny about trump anymore. We cannot be making light of what’s going on here.

8

u/pennyclip Jan 25 '26

Reads like a bunch of nepo babies who have huge safety blankets ignoring people getting beaten and murdered by the government, and this asshole threatening war on our neighbors every other day. Not a time for lighthearted pokes.

That or the Blake Lively-Justin Baldoni drama.

7

u/beerandloathingpdx Jan 25 '26

Am I the only one who not only doesn’t find parodying Trump funny anymore but also thinks that SNL needs to remove literally all kid gloves from the writers room if they’re to remain a relevant comedy show?

Jim Downey would have his teeth out writing skits against this. Instead they have a writers room of gen z tiktokers and people who think Americans being gunned down in the street is something we’ll all just sit back and forget and laugh about

12

u/Agreeable-Amoeba5459 Jan 25 '26

I am 48. I have watched SNL most of my life. I haven’t watched recently. They made too many Trump opens. This isn’t a tan suit. This is the second civil war in the US and it is tragedy and heartbreak.

12

u/rainbirdmelody Jan 25 '26

Also, if they are going to have a Trump sketch, it needs to reflect how terrible he looks and how doddering he is. Instead he just come across as quirky and healthy.

9

u/Tygorz Jan 26 '26

They literally focused on the bruises on his hand in the cold open. I believe there was also something about him losing his mind and going to hell in weekend update.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/mutant_anomaly Jan 25 '26

They portray him as energetic.

7

u/Agile-Enthusiasm Jan 25 '26

I feel like the “America, this is you” montage bit kinda flew right over a lot of people’s heads, eh

5

u/Tygorz Jan 26 '26

Yeah I mean I think it was a pretty scathing cold open, at least for a comedy show

5

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '26

I can’t laugh at these anymore. What he’s doing to the country isn’t funny so they should stop the Trump sketches and move onto something else. Politics isn’t cutting it these days for sketch material.

24

u/Classic-Exchange-511 Jan 25 '26

The way they portray him I think does a lot of harm for how regular people view hik

8

u/Serengade26 Jan 25 '26

Yeah amusing ourselves to death. Plus he gets the ultimate reward attention

3

u/Weird-Chemistry9819 Jan 26 '26

I totally agree. I was JUST texting my sister about this the other day and was saying they’re making him out to be too witty and goofy (and honestly with it mentally as well which he is definitely is not). They’re murdering us and he’s actively destroying the country, why are they portraying him in a positive light?

9

u/JonathanLarsonJr Jan 25 '26

They should do a FINAL political cold open next week in which Lorne locks trump, hagseth, and all the people that play his administration up in a soundproof cage and throws away the key.

9

u/SerArryk Jan 25 '26

I tuned in to see Geese. I don’t think they are too soft or too hard on this administration. I’m just so tired of seeing it parodied everywhere. My discontent is immeasurable, but this shit isn’t funny anymore.

10

u/T-sizzle-91 Jan 25 '26

A little surprised nobody in the crowd shouted something. Fuck Trump/ abolish ICE etc... it'd be really cool if somebody did that...

5

u/MarkyMarkATFB Jan 25 '26

Comedy and entertainment changed after 9/11 and adapted to the new world we’d been (involuntarily) ushered into, SNL of the time included.

Similarly, lots of comedy and entertainment shifted/grew after the first Trump election win…SNL was not one of them and that fact has finally become too big to ignore.

4

u/PrincipledBeef Jan 25 '26

It’s super lazy writing. Move on, we’ve had enough of him. What other more creative ways can we find laughs?

4

u/Mr_Caterpillar Jan 25 '26

You know how Norm got fired because he kept making jokes about OJ? This is like if OJ had done the murders on camera in front of a crowd of people and SNL still went "you can't criticize that!"

3

u/verusisrael Jan 25 '26

don't do a sketch with donald trump, do a sketch about what its like to live in donald trumps america.

5

u/TheFrontCrashesFirst Jan 26 '26

SNL bows to the network, they made a whole show about it ::queue the 30Rock theme:: c'mon.

4

u/NoPressureUsername Jan 26 '26

Getting tired of the, "Trump is a buffoon and does and says stupid shit." Either GO AT HIM or ignore it. People have been shot in their hometown by masked federal agents. This cutesy "aww shucks" parody of evil ain't it.

8

u/trash235 Jan 25 '26

They’ve been softening the images of fascists for a long time now. The subversive roots of SNL are long dead.

11

u/burgonies Jan 25 '26

They could at least stop with the Trump cold opens. It’s so fucking old at this point. It’d be at least a little understandable if they were killing it with laughter each week. It’s jus bizarre

7

u/Suicidal_Jamazz Jan 26 '26

Political satire during this dictatorship regime is not funny anymore. It stopped being funny for a while now.

3

u/benny-bangs Jan 25 '26

It’s just getting old. honestly mostly because they aren’t even going after them harshly it’s so playful. Need better writers who can come up with good unique ideas

3

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '26

I’m watching it right now and I do feel like he’s got a lot more disgust in his delivery. But yeah, these skits are not funny at all anymore. It’s too serious.

3

u/yestbat Jan 25 '26

Tone deaf.

3

u/squirrelinthetoilet Jan 25 '26

Yup, SNL has gotten a little out of touch. There’s no teeth to this satire.

3

u/Professional_Drive Jan 25 '26

They need to bring Jim Downey back to pull a Season 7 Michael O’Donoghue, and have the writers shown how to write political sketches.

3

u/olyfrijole Jan 25 '26

The proverbial mussing of the hair continues unabated. Lorne was a rung on the ladder that brought Drumpf to power.

3

u/DrebinofPoliceSquad Jan 25 '26

The only political sketch I have ever liked was Will Ferrell as Janet Reno. Guest staring Janet Reno.

3

u/SnowblindAlbino Jan 25 '26

No shit. It's long past time to have Mussolini on the TV, even in parody form. The next thing I want to see him in is a trial. Not a comedy sketch.

I've been watching SNL since the 1979 season. It's often tone-deaf, but they really need to have a talk with the writers about T-rump.

3

u/DaYmAn6942069 Jan 25 '26

Bill Mahers season opener was week as fuck too, and now I’m perma banned from that sub for saying so. It’s not that I look to these shows for information or inspiration or something of that nature. And they are obviously two completely different shows but damn it would have been nice to hear a little more fire and brimstone somewhere.

3

u/AceofKnaves44 Jan 25 '26

Lorne definitely voted for Trump this time around. There’s a reason his “parodies” are so toothless and weak.

3

u/ryanro24 Jan 25 '26

I’m so fucking tired of the Trump cold open.

3

u/nowyoukillin Jan 25 '26

Johnson called Trump “charming” so this feels on brand.

3

u/Only1Schematic Jan 25 '26

Simply put, it’s just not funny anymore. If they’re too afraid to really go after them, the halfhearted cold opens we’ve been getting are almost worse than nothing at all.

3

u/Vladd3456 Jan 25 '26

It's time for SNL to go off the air. I've been complaining about the lazy writing and light hearted Trump cold opening for years now.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/TruskVarner Jan 25 '26

They were more mean to a Boy Scout than they were to Trump.

(The Boy Scout joke was funny but that’s beside the point.)

3

u/jephyri Jan 25 '26

since it is always a trump cold open now, I change the channel and then come back usually in the middle of the opening monologue or the commercial break thereafter.

3

u/Abbey_Something Jan 25 '26

SNL has been toothless. A man was executed on the street in broad daylight and they roll out the over played kid gloves on Trump sketch. Notice Trump is never mad about it or rage tweeting about it.

3

u/QuiGonColdGin Jan 25 '26

I found it hard to watch, and didn't find myself laughing. The state of the country and this administration has become too dire and tragic for anything to be funny anymore, even in parody.

3

u/TrustInRoy Jan 25 '26

I can write a Trump sketch.

Have Trump in the White House with his advisors watching the film of the execution of an American citizen by ICE.  One person narrates everything that actually happened, and then Trump comes up with lies he can tell the American people.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/FranciscoGarcia69 Jan 26 '26

I skipped the cold open and won’t be watching it again as long as they’re doing “Look at Trump being a bumbling grandpa” bullshit.

3

u/bixbixby Jan 26 '26

Because this stupid imitation doesn't hurt Trump. At its worst it just makes him seem like a buffoon, not a real cruel threat to democracy that he actually is. If anything it makes people think it's funny to talk like him.

3

u/Polish_Jesse Jan 26 '26

I would have preferred they didn’t do trump or politics at all last night.

3

u/Humbled_Humanz Jan 26 '26

That open was GROSS.

3

u/yetagainitry Jan 26 '26

The was like if they did the post 911 show and did a bit about how bad airplane food is.

3

u/ChipKellysShoeStore Jan 26 '26

Queue the Tim Robinson quote

3

u/fisconsocmod Jan 26 '26

Or maybe the POTUS could stop trying to become a Totalitarian?

3

u/AndOnTheDrums Jan 26 '26

He’s not a laughable buffoon anymore - he’s unleashed ghouls like Bovino and Miller to literally threaten our way of life. Not a funny thing about it.

12

u/Important-Radish-722 Jan 25 '26

This is NBCs way of telling Trump they still support him and are still on board with normalizing his behavior.

They are uniquely responsible for both of his presidencies.

6

u/jordansideas Jan 25 '26

A network TV comedy show that averages about 2.5% of the United States' population watching its broadcasts is not responsible for who becomes president

Tacky and tone deaf. JAJ should abandon ship and do his own thing. Michaels neutered his Trump impression and made it a great big nothing. The show is not able to keep up with the times. The WU anchors are out of touch and barely even trying. Their biggest concern is what prank they will pull on the other rather than doing something interesting with that segment.

When he first started doing the Trump videos he had a perfect angle of fighting absurdity with absurdity but times have changed. The show would never allow him to pivot to anything but the empty impression.

u/Learned_Hand_01 Jan 25 '26

Yeah, I thought this sketch was significantly harder on him. It didn’t include all of the meta commentary portraying him as understanding all the dynamics around him and being a puppet master. It showed him as vain, greedy and frail.

I think people are just so angry they don’t want to see him at all.

I thought this was a pretty big tonal shift and much more uniformly negative. The problem they have is it is a comedy show and whatever they do also has to work as comedy.

I think many people won’t be satisfied until more of the current reality of him being semi-awake, semi-coherent, fully ID, fully stupid and fully cruel is reflected, but I don’t understand how that can work within comedy and I don’t think anyone else does either.

Part of the problem is that when JAJ speaks he is always smarter and more likable than Trump, but it will always be important to make fun of Trump. Humor is one of the best tools against autocrats. I thought this was a good try and showed they are aware of the problem. Doing better than this would require an entire new approach and probably a recast of the actor.

8

u/Ok-Definition4938 Jan 25 '26

i completely agree with your take. Me and my husband were talking about the cold opens and i felt this recent one was definitely more aggressive. Instead of basically reenacting what happens every week, they mocked and even highlighted some of the dark things going on with trump

It’s a hard position. If they stop doing the trump skits, everyone will say they’re silent. But if they’re going to do them they still need to have a comedy aspect bc that’s the point of the show

4

u/sumerislemy Jan 25 '26

Yes because it’s just talking, they’re not willing to show him doing anything embarrassing

They gave him awards.

He isn't ashamed of his vanity, he had always be proud of it. You can't mock something someone is proud of.

6

u/Three_Twenty-Three Jan 25 '26

They should have gone with the same setup but then kept denying him the awards. Then cut away to their Trump getting angrier and angrier until he's a big diapered baby in a bassinet, bawling his eyes out because he didn't get a golden twophy.

6

u/paisleycatperson Jan 25 '26

Yeah.

He likes his fake awards. Handing him more fake awards is not satire. Giving Noem an AWARD on the day she had a man in the back is B A N A N A S.

You have to go after things he hates, like losing awards, his body, epstein. "Pedophile protector" got him mad. Fake awards made him happy.

5

u/billyvnilly Jan 25 '26

They should not have aired it. It should have been black screen with victims names.

3

u/IngsocInnerParty Jan 25 '26

I’m glad this is being called out in the media and not just this sub. It’s ridiculous.
