Discussion This isn’t funny anymore

Post image

This administration of pure cruelty should no longer be normalized with “satire”, we are well past that point. this shit isn’t funny anymore.

The problem with these is it just seems like a re-enactment not a parody. Some of it is slightly amusing (Jost as Hegseth) but most is just meh

It's not even satire

Yeah it's mostly "this is what is happening". Ok?? So where is the joke? We don't need to be reminded of the cruelty without a point. In a way it normalizes the behaviour

I agree. As a bizarre metaphor Jason Voorhees comes to mind. It’s the same movie after the next than Jason Goes to Hell comes and the FBI and the police finally take this seriously. Probably one of the most missed opportunities in film because it’s not a good film when it could have been great. I think we’re all tired of the goofy Trump. He’s got a massive dark side that’s not really shown on television. SNL should show him to be more crazy in person than portrayed in public speeches. There are so many stories of Trump doing really stupid shit. Use that material rather than the easy writing.

But then Trump would begin attacking any Comcast business move they tried to make. And there’s the actual rub.

Oh well, call their bluff, they should do it anyway

He already does that

I love you for this analogy.

I love Jason Goes to Hell, it’s my second favorite F13 movie after part 2. Heavy Lovecraft vibes. The unrated directors cut is the way to go.

Oh, haven’t seen that.

If anything it kind of makes it seem like the reality of it is less serious than it actually is. Like “oh it’s just goofy ice and trump being silly again. Let’s all make a joke and just forget about it all again”.

💯. I had to stop watching Colbert because he just kept making fun of how stupid Trump is. Like, yeah, he's not a smart man, but he's not sitting around playing with smoothed-out building blocks either - wildly overestimating his stupidity and grievously underestimating his evil, particularly with the context of turning it all into jokes, is part of how we got here.

I absolutely don't think that was Colbert's intention, but he was fatefully ignorant of the kinds of personality disorders at play, and the end result was the "what a dumbass, he's too stupid to do any real harm, he's just a dumb asshole, not a truly soulless genocidal threat to the very fabric of the country".

It was weird seeing Trevor Noah figure it out in real time. He bounced not too long after that, and I definitely wonder if that was a factor.

Exactly as a Brit I'm giving SNL a rest as what's happening to Greenland isn't funny. And Venezuela is scary.

25th amendment. J.D Vance becomes President. I have no fucking idea what Vance would do.

1

u/indiginary Jan 25 '26

That's the whole point: It's not about Vance. Or Trump or Hegseth or any of them. It's about Vought, Project2025, Miller... the ones behind the curtain, executing the plan, unflinchingly. "Do this, say that." This is all scripted.

1

u/ObscureObjective Jan 22 '26

Absolutely. It makes it look "cute" and minimizes the actual damage being done. It's like "oh gosh, look at those silly Americans again, those rascals".

Well, the hat is bigger than a normal hat, so it's funny.

I don’t need to click the link, I just know it’s Norm MacDonald.

I was feeling generous enough to open our little circle to any potential outsiders. This special slice of hell we share in which celebrity jeopardy one liners have invaded decades worth of every day thoughts

I was saying this to my s/o years ago. How everyone doing these satirical personalities of him, or making lighthearted jokes about the way he speaks over and over is just normalizing this vile behavior. We need to curb this bs not make jokes about it.

7

u/calaxrand- Jan 19 '26

Agreed - it’s mostly just caricature… which is a little too close to cute.

8

u/MilesAndMilesAhead Jan 20 '26

It does normalize the behavior, which I think is exactly what the NBC suits want - avoids the $100 million dollar fake Trump lawsuit. Comcast which owns NBC - does business with ICE

IMO, SNL should splinter the "topical" political intros and sketches off to a 15 or 30 minute online streaming option, and let the writers and sketch performers get creative for 90 minutes on the live show (without constrictions). It's become that hack, Lorne.

2

u/ErinUnbound Jan 20 '26

They should just play these characters in the most staid, responsible fashion possible to highlight how wildly they’ve divested themselves of any semblance of propriety, ethics, good faith, etc.

4

u/agent_uno Jan 19 '26

Amen! I stopped watching a year ago! SNL needs to quit this shit and start actively protesting! Otherwise I name them complicit! Fuck SNL, their writers, producers, and actors for normalizing all this fascist shit!!!!

The joke is this administration.

I’m not a huge South Park fan but they have done a much better job exposing and ridiculing the trump administration. The SNL skits have been an exercise in impersonation without saying anything substantial or risky.
