Admin [META] Kind Friend Updates / Chat GPT and Yo[u]

Hello Community,

I hope you are all doing well, or atleast a little better than yesterday. I wanted to put a post up around some recent changes and behaviour in the sub.

r/KindFriend has been privated.

Kind Friend was originally created as a sister sub to Kindvoice to handle more friendship orientated requests while Kindvoice focused on emotional support. Recently it seems to have caught to the attention of a number of bad actors. The posts had been gradually trending to a younger audience and I was becoming increasingly concerned that it was facilitating people looking to take advantage of these members. As such the sub is currently privated to prevent access and any further risk. I would encourage those seeking purely friendships to try more established subs such as r/makenewfriendshere or r/needafriend. This behaviour has thankfully not transferred over to r/Kindvoice.

Previously friendship posts had been against the rules of KindVoice, although not strictly enforced given that a lot of the time a good friend can make a world of difference to someone's current state. We intend to continue the current status quo in this regard and deal with friendship posts on a case by case basis as it makes a minority of posts. I would highly encourage users to use more focused subs for this if seeking purely friendship. If you are reaching out for a friend because you feel lonely or want to improve social skills, that post still has a place here. Just please be aware many offerors are volunteering their time when they can and should not be considered a permanent support placement or lifelong friend.

Chat GPT Usage

Over the past few months ChatGPT started recommending us as a place for lonely users or those who were feeling down to seek human contact. Alongside this we saw a dramatic increase in the number of bots, monetary requests and ChatGPT generated posts. We have literally gone from a few bans a month to a few a day.

- Accounts with less than 5 comment karma or less than 3 days old will now be caught in a filter for approval. I appreciate some people don't want to post here on main so a mod mail will be raised for each submission caught in the filter so they can be approved.

- Chat GPT is NOT against the rules currently HOWEVER PLEASE BE AWARE that many people come here looking for a human voice. You may believe that in writing an answer via Chat GPT you sound more articulate or better at supporting. In reality the message it often conveys to the looker that they can't find someone who is even willing to use their own words. Comments may be removed if they feel too robotic when the person is looking for a connection.

Final Notes

I would love to hear any community feedback on these points.

A huge thanks as always to the people that donate their time to help others. Look after yourselves where you can.

-AJ

[META] Seeking C[o]mmunity Feedback on Rule 2

I hope all of the Kind Voices out there are having a wonderful day and that my message finds all of the Lookers slightly better than they were yesterday.

This post is to gather some feedback from any willing community members around rule 2. Recently I have been rather lax on it's enforcement given r/KindFriend isn't hugely active (although it's had a surge recently) however I am aware there are a number of other very popular subreddits that fill the same niche so I want to ask your thoughts:

- Do you mind friendship based posts on this subreddit or would you rather keep them to other spaces?

- Do you feel requests asking for daily supports fall into this category?

- Any other thoughts you may have.

Looking [L] I feel like I can't talk about my problems

I'm 18f and for the longest time I so badly didn't want to be seen as attention seeking or annoying by talking about my problems to people, like having depression or honestly anything. But now I feel like I literally can't talk about anything emotional with people. Over the summer I was having a vacation with some of my closest friends, and they were sharing personal things, and they asked me and I just couldn't say anything. Today again another friend asked me something specific and I really did want to tell her but I just can't. Idek

Looking [L] I am alone at the hospital

I am alone at the hospital and recently I spent my birthday alone.

I just want to talk to someone.

I used to have this person, who was a girl, and she was very important to me. We would message everyday, whenever we could and we were each other’s emotional support without realizing it. Someone who is always there and you can share anything with. If anyone understands and feels the same way, please DM me.

If anyone needs someone to talk to and don’t have anyone, I’ll chat with you. 30M

Looking [L] My father screwed me financially and it's been getting to me

For context, I'm a 37F that lives with my parents. At the beginning of this year, I had plans to work on a whole budget plan so that I can finish paying off my remaining student loan then begin saving to move out.

My my father kept asking to "borrow" a lot of money from me. I usually don't mind helping financially since I love my dad, but this was more money than I usually give. He claimed that he would pay me back last month, but it's October now. And I can't ask him about it now because he just had surgery for a fractured foot and he's upset about it.

I was okay with it at first, but I've been having a lot of things come up, such as paying to replace a broken windshield and urgent care for bronchitis. And it's been practically impossible to recover financially to allow me to pay extra on my last loan and get it done quicker.

I want to move out so badly since there's been so much tension between my parents and it's been suffocating me. Lately, thinking about this has been making me burst into tears, knowing that I'm stuck here. The most I have done is open a savings and have it automatically withdraw once a week, but who knows how long that will take to make enough to leave. The only light of hope I have is that a friend of mine offered to room with her after she finishes law school, but I want to maybe go on a long trip with her first to make sure we're compatible as roommates.

I'm just feeling full of despair right now, knowing I'm doomed to be trapped in my parents house because of my dad taking money and not paying me back like he promised.

Looking [l] Pretty little life…

• Upvotes

Hey guys I am 35 male.
just wanted to talk a bit, since I am under too much pressure that haven’t experienced to this scale and to be honest at this stage don’t have many people to talk with in this deep level.

Maybe it will be helpful for me.
Well I came to Germany around 5-6 years ago and work in IT sector,
I always had a good life, in my home country, and here in Germany.
there were always problems that annoy of course or things become difficult or different sort of challenges, but all of them were passing eventually.
But I lost my job about 2 years ago. Had very bad experience in my dating, and since then it is just continuing and it never stopped.
I always tried, I looked for job, I learned, tried to open my business.
But very interestingly, everything was failing non stop.
And at this point after 2 years, I still couldn’t find job and many more things got added up.
I was in a relationship, and very close to a marriage. But it didn’t work and of course it hurts deep losing someone you think could be your “the one”.
I had visa issue since I lost my job and very close to not be able to extend and had to go back to my home country, which is not safe also and gave enormous stress.
Since I was in IT sector I used English, but past months I tried to make my German in a better level which going very slow even that I had some good progress before. And this takes lots of energy.
Tried my business but couldn’t push it forward since cant focus on one thing.
Tried to get different sort of jobs but each of them interestingly failed, even that some of them I was sure I am so close to get them.
And nowadays I am struggling with money issue for the first time in my life which is really not nice and has many bad consequences, and it can lead again me not being able to stay here.
I have money for 3-4 months of my living now, and it is such a huge pressure.
I have a customer that I made his company platform, he is playing games and not paying me up yet. And it is giving me lots of stress which is unusual for me.
Also past months, I talked with German offices to give me permission so I can work part time at least any job I want(non IT related), for months I talked to them but they rejected it, so I even cant cover my life with doing some non-IT job temporary which based on chat gpt, I am eligible to get it, but end of the day, they have the saying for it.
They say bring a contract first for those jobs.
And if I go find. Non-IT jobs, they tell me first get the permission and then we give you the job. So it is like a circle that I can meet up requirement because it needs the other part first.

And all I want is to be able to pay my life.
I used to have blue card, I paid tax for years here. And they are making my life so hard.
some people tell me why you are making your life so hard, just do things illegally and earn the money you want, but I never done things illegally my life and not interested in it, thats why I am trying so hard to find a way.
But anyway…
Everyday lots of rejection everywhere, from jobs that I apply, from paperworks, tax office problems,
I am so overwhelmed …
Past months I tried to give myself lots of self motivation ( I am very good at giving people motivation, hope and all and I do it all the time towards people around me or even strangers)
I tried to keep my motivation high with staying social, going to hikes, dancing, making new friends, gym, German class.
But now the pressure became too high that I started disfunctioning…
Yesterday I skipped a class of mine, today I skipped a German class…
Past days I was home mostly
And I have done some attempts still, like waking up6 am and be productive, taking walks, talking to parents or friends.
I am doing anything in the book.
This is just too much pressure,
And there are many more, its like a long long list of things that doesn’t work
Thats why I am taking it slow for one day or two, and I try to give myself time. Just sad that I cant talk much
I really show lots of empathy towards people and try to be there for them whenever they are down or in fears. And I wonder why when I am in this low state, why people avoid me and not showing the care and empathy a bit more.
And of course it is just my feelings and thoughts, they can do whatever they want. Just that makes me sad and wonder. And also it doesn’t matter at this point.

I feel so alone, so desperate at this moment.
I have huge goals, it is not about me being successful or being rich.
It’s about making this world better or helping people.
But thats funny how life twists and make things so difficult, that I even cant take care of myself
And I like challenge , I do my best always.
Just this time it became too long, and I dont have any emotional support and I am very drained. I am fighting this for a long time, and at this point I don’t have a safe shoulder to put my head on.
I can date, I have it physically, but, what I mean is some deeper connection who cares and its not related to gender.

But yeah… just shared a tiny bit of my feelings here, and hoped it could be helpful for me.
Kinda dumped random thoughts of mine here, maybe it doesn’t make sense to most people.
I just hope things works.
Right now it is too scary, and never been this low really… hope this pass quickly too.

Looking 32M [L] I just want to feel taken care of.

Is that weird? I feel like that might be weird. It just feels like I do everything for everyone, and I get nothing in return. I feel alone, and I want to be taken care of and doted on a little. I don't know... I'll probably just delete this. I'm kind of depressed. 💀

Offering [O]Does Anyone Else Get Like This When They're Angry? 🥺💔

Is anyone else like me?

When I get angry, I can't scream. I can't yell. I can't even get the harsh words out, no matter how badly I want to.

Instead, I cry.

The angrier I feel inside, the harder it is to speak. I try to open my mouth to shout, to let everything out, to finally say what I've been holding back… but all that comes out is tears.

And the more I try to hold them back, the harder I cry.

Sometimes, I'm not crying because I'm sad. I'm crying because I'm SO angry, so frustrated, and have so much bottled up inside me that I don't know how to let it out.

It's frustrating when your heart is screaming, but your voice can't seem to do the same.

Sometimes, the anger is so deep, but all people see are your tears. They don't realize how much you're holding inside or how badly you want to scream, because all you can do is cry.

Please tell me I'm not the only one. Does this happen to you, too? 🥺❤️

Looking [L] 27m My life has been extremely lonely, and I'm reaching a point where I am extremely miserable and regretful.

At 27 I'm working full time with a decent job, and I'm getting my life together and losing weight and overall just trying my best. But I still live in the house I came home to after I was born, with just my mother. My father had a new family and is now dead, and my sister is 11 years older than me and was out of the house by the time I started kindergarten. So my entire life has pretty much been just me and my mom.

I am resentful of how despite how hard I've worked and everything I've done in my career, I've been careless with myself and my money to the point where I am a pathetic single man living with his mother. I am so incredibly lonely all the time. I can barely appreciate the good relationship I have with my mother because I am so extremely resentful of the fact that I still live with her. I am stuck in the same place, physically and metaphorically, that I have been in since I was born. My life hasn't moved at all. And what's even worse is that when my mother is away for work I turn into even more of pathetic mess because being completely by myself in an empty house is torture. When I'm not working, I pretty much just rewatch familiar TV shows and try not to lose my mind because I literally cannot feel comfortable anywhere I am without hearing familiar voices.

I despise myself. Sincerely and fully. I'm several years clean from self-harm, but it's on my mind weekly anyway. My friends and even my therapist have pretty much told me that they don't want to hear anything about how I feel unless I'm telling them what I'm trying to do better. That, and at my age I don't think I can really rely on my friends to know or care how I feel. And it will be a cold day in hell before I turn to my mother for help. So I really don't have anywhere to go anymore.

[L] feeling alone. Could really use a friend?

Life feels lonely as of late. Its so hard to make friends as it is, I've never really had many people in my life, so when I met my online friend life felt like it had colour.

I thought we clicked so well but they ghosted me. I didn't realise how alone I was until I met them, and when they ghosted me I wasn't expecting the deafening silence that is my life.

I feel lost.

I could really use some conversations with good people, show me there's some good out there in the world? I really need it.

Hello everyone, i have had a troubled childhood, and a month ago i was met with very turbulent ghosts of the past. I am doing fine now. It made me remember how tenderly humans should be treated like. I am no therapist or an expert, but if you just need some stranger to talk to you, i am offering internet hugs, handshakes or whatever you need <3. Feel free to reach out, i know a simple conversation can never fix any issues, but for that moment it might make you feel less alone.

19M vet student, tired of being lonely and pretending I'm fine (OCD, anxiety, lots of feelings) [o]

19, vet student, tired of being lonely and pretending I'm fine (OCD, anxiety, lots of feelings)

Hi everyone. I'm 19, in my second year of vet school, and I'm writing this because I'm honestly tired of feeling alone.

I have OCD (I hid it for four years before I could finally get help) and anxiety, and I take medication for both. I also suspect I might have ADHD and some borderline traits, but nothing is diagnosed. My OCD is mostly intrusive thoughts and guilt. I replay things in my head, look for proof that I did something wrong, and feel the need to "review" my day before I can move on. It's exhausting.

My emotions are a rollercoaster. I'm talkative and I open up easily, but part of me is always waiting to be betrayed, so I regret it right after. I'm scared of being abandoned, of never being loved, and of getting bored once someone's affection is "guaranteed". As a kid I was the clown who loved making people react, and I think I still am, to hide how much I need to be seen and appreciated.

Home has never felt warm. I always had food and a roof, but love felt conditional, and I think that's why I chase approval so much.

I've had two relationships with girls. One was on and off, with someone who kept leaving and coming back, and I got hurt a lot. The other was short and ended because my OCD was at its worst. I stayed "just friends" with both while still having feelings, held on to resentment, and lashed out when I was hurting. I'm tired of this pattern and want to learn healthier boundaries.

At school I did well in first year, but I feel like a fraud. I feel like I've forgotten everything and will be incompetent later. I also worry about finding a job after graduating.

What I love: anime (Bleach, Hunter x Hunter), phonk, gacha games, running, and deep conversations about life, morality and dreams. I'm bi and an atheist.

[L] The childhood trauma, (silent treatment & emotional neglect, I received as a kid is now biggest trigger in adulthood) is ruining my adult relationships

I don’t really know where to start, but I just need to get this off my chest.
I grew up in a household where my father was emotionally avoidant, and my siblings seemed to pick up the same behaviors from him. There wasn’t much compassion or kindness when it came to dealing with conflict. Whenever an argument happened, nobody really tried to sit down and understand each other. It was always accusations, blame, and hurtful comments that went straight for your heart.
Even the smallest disagreement could turn into something painful. There was a lot of cold treatment and silent treatment, and it often felt deliberate, as if the goal was to make the other person feel unwanted, unloved, and unaccepted. It made you feel like you were nothing, like your feelings didn’t matter, and like you could be emotionally abandoned just because someone was upset with you.
I grew up experiencing this throughout my childhood and teenage years, and it has affected me more than I can explain.
Now, whenever someone becomes distant, ignores me, or gives me the silent treatment, I immediately start feeling like they don’t love me anymore. It scares me in a way that’s difficult to put into words. It’s not just sadness or being upset. It feels almost haunting, like I’m being taken back to all those moments when I felt unwanted growing up.
I got married last year, and my husband is genuinely different from my family. He’s calm, kind, and compassionate. I don’t see him as the same kind of person they were, and I don’t believe his intentions are the same.
But there’s one thing I struggle with.
Sometimes he asks me not to do something, and I end up doing it anyway. It frustrates him or disappoints him, and when that happens, he needs a few days to process his emotions. During that time, he becomes distant and gives me the cold or silent treatment.
From what I understand, he’s not necessarily trying to punish or hurt me. He just needs time to process his feelings. I can understand that. I know people handle conflict differently, and I know that needing space isn’t automatically a sign that someone has stopped loving you.
But emotionally, I can’t seem to handle it.
Those few days feel unbearable to me. I start feeling neglected, unwanted, and unloved. I become scared that I’ve ruined something, that he no longer feels the same way about me, or that I’m going to lose the relationship because I’ve disappointed him.
It’s like my brain understands that he’s not my family, but my emotions don’t understand the difference. His silence brings back all those old feelings, and suddenly I’m that same person who grew up feeling unwanted whenever someone decided to withdraw their affection.
The worst part is that it affects me physically, too. Whenever I feel deeply neglected or unloved, I sometimes develop what feels like a high fever, my throat gets sore, and my whole body feels like it’s burning. I don’t know whether it’s stress or something else, but the physical symptoms make everything even more difficult. (I know I shouldn’t automatically assume a fever is caused by stress, and I need to take the physical symptoms seriously, too.)
I don’t know how to stop reacting this way. I don’t know how to teach myself that someone being upset with me doesn’t mean they’ve stopped loving me. I don’t know how to stop feeling terrified of emotional distance, even when I know the person I’m with isn’t intentionally trying to hurt me.
And I feel so alone with all of this.
I don’t really have friends I can talk to about these things. I feel like people who didn’t grow up in a similar environment might not understand why something as simple as someone going quiet for a few days can affect me so deeply.

Looking [L] Middle-aged woman struggling with loneliness, grief, and feeling left behind in life

I'm a middle aged woman, and lately I've been struggling with where my life is. I don't really know who to talk to, so I'm hoping to find someone who might understand.

I've experienced several things that have changed how I see myself and my future. I had a facial injury that left me with a prominent scar and affected my confidence. Before that, I enjoyed creating hair content and modelling products for a small business I ran. It was something I loved, but since the injury, I've struggled to return to it.

My relationships have been painful, too. I've hoped for marriage and a lasting partnership, but things haven't worked out. I also know that I can never have biological children, and that's something I continue to grieve.

My family relationships are complicated, and although we're trying to rebuild them, things aren't the way they used to be.

Financially, I'm living paycheck to paycheck. I have a chronic illness on top of everything else, and I'm trying to improve my career and financial circumstances. But after years of trying, I feel exhausted by the setbacks.

Sometimes I look at other people building families, progressing in their careers, and enjoying the things I wish I had, and I feel as though life has left me behind. I often find myself wondering why I have to struggle so much for things that seem to come more easily to other people.

Why does it feel like I have to fight so hard for a little stability, love, and happiness? I'm tired of trying so hard and still feeling like I'm falling short. I don't know why my life has turned out this way, and some days I struggle to make sense of it all.

I'm not writing this because I expect strangers to solve my problems or tell me everything will be okay. I think I'm looking for someone who understands what it's like when several parts of your life are difficult at the same time, and you're tired of having to keep going as though everything is fine.

If you've experienced a similar season of life, I'd appreciate hearing how you've navigated it. I'm looking for a kind, honest conversation with someone willing to listen without minimising what I'm feeling or trying to fix everything.

Sometimes I just want to feel a little less alone.lone.

[L] 38M, It’s been a long day

It’s been one of those days where I’m tired and would really appreciate someone to talk to while I unwind. Not necessarily looking for advice or someone to fix anything, just a little company and a genuine conversation. I’d be happy to hear about your day, too. We can talk about whatever’s been on our minds or keep things light and give each other a reason to smile. You don’t need to have the perfect thing to say; a simple hello is welcome.

Feel free to send me a message. Adults only, please.

[O] I'm glad you're here. If you need someone to sit with you and listen, my door is open.

Hi friend,

I hope today is being gentle with you. But if it isn't—or if you're carrying a feeling that feels too heavy or complicated to hold all by yourself—I want you to know that you don't have to.
Deep down, we all have days when we just need to know that someone genuinely cares about what we're going through and respects how we feel.

If you could use a listening ear today, here is what you can count on:

Come just as you are: You don't need to put on a brave face, make sense of everything, or find the "right" words. Whatever you are feeling right now is completely okay.

A patient, unhurried space: There is no rush and no pressure. Take all the time you need, whether that means typing out a single sentence or a whole long story.

Presence over advice: I’m not here to judge you, evaluate you, or try to fix things for you. I am simply here to listen, sit with you, and let you know that you matter.

Whether you need to talk through something heavy, share a quiet victory that nobody else noticed, or just have someone acknowledge your day—I’m glad to be a neighbor in this space for you.
Feel free to send a message whenever you're ready. Take good care of yourself today. 🫂

Looking 32M [L] - a life of pushing through through my anxiety/autism is now falling apart

I am on the spectrum but mildly so. Being exactly at the edge of being able to do normal work/study meant I've always been pushing it to my limit to be able to make it work. This gave me nice gifts like anxiety issues and IBS to name a few. Those then became its own problem.

Unfortunately the limit was truly reached a year ago. Burnout, realizing my partner wasn't right for me.. So now everything I've built on a shaky foundation is falling apart. Relationship over, work on the verge of ending because of long sick leave. The house going to be sold in a year because of the breakup.

It's like I'm completely reset back to my twenties and it's incredibly painful.. and also just so much that people who didn't live this do not really understand. They mostly get shocked which makes it even more lonely right now.

I think the thing that hurts the most is that I've been the friend and partner that had everyone come to him to cry in the past. But after the last few years i've become more isolated because my old friends didn't really go deep enough for the issues I was carrying...so I am now crying alone...

I don't really know what I want. I guess I want to feel less alone. I don't need anyone to really tell me it's going to be okay. Honestly I'm not even sure if and when its going to be okay. But if you are in a similar position, please reach out to me.

Looking [L] My life plans have been turned upside down

Hi all. My partner of nearly 2 years broke up with me the other day. I'm feeling lost and alone and could use some kind words, maybe some advice.

I moved to a different part of the country to go to school back in 2024 with the intention of moving home once I was done. Then I fell in love and changed my plans.

This guy wasn't the type I've typically dated in the past, which turned out to be great. No one I had ever been with had even hinted at wanting or seeing a future with me, but this guy would practically scream it from the rooftops. I felt very hesitant at first because nothing has ever worked out for me and I didn't want to let myself get too excited because I was always in the mindset of 'you never know what could happen'. But he would speak so matter-of-factly about our future that I started to feel more secure and open to making those kinds of plans. We planned out what I wanted my engagement ring to look like, we talked about kids and when we wanted to have them, we would call each other future wife/future husband.

What made him similar to the guys I've dated before was that he was someone who didn't like to share when he was feeling upset about something. So little did I know that he had been feeling unhappy in the relationship for over a year and decided to keep that to himself and push through in hopes that things would somehow get better and he'd get happy again. I imagine he didn't think I would notice, but there were a few times I mentioned feeling off and asked if everything was ok, and he always assured me things were fine.

He kept that to himself while my family helped move all my things out here, a good 20hr drive from home. And while he listened to me talk about how much I miss my family and hope we can move closer to them some day. While I signed a year-long contract for my dream job. While we signed a year-long lease for a house together.

So here we are, less than 2 weeks in our new place that neither of us can afford on our own, and he's broken up with me. In less than a month, I've gone from plans of settling down as a wife and mother with my dream job to plans of moving back in with my parents.

The only people I really know out here and who have supported me are his family. So I'm feeling incredibly alone, lost, angry (actually, whatever I'm feeling is so far beyond anger idek what I would call it).

I still love this man, though... Is it crazy that I still want to convince him to work on things? I won't because he's clearly made up his mind.

The point of me typing all of this is that I'm 26 years old and I'm having a hard time believing that I'm not too old for this to be happening. I've always wanted to be settled down and having kids before I was 30, but now that vision seems completely out of reach. I feel like it'll be impossible for me to ever trust someone like this again.

I will say, I am already in therapy which has been incredibly helpful in helping me not lose it completely, but I would love to hear if anyone has maybe gone through something similar and turned out ok.
