Discovered this band about 6 months ago
I don’t know exactly how I stumbled upon Joy Division, but one day I ended up hearing Love Will Tear Us Apart on Spotify and I decided to check out the rest of their music.
Man this has got to be my favorite band to shake up my regular listening. I’m normally a mostly progressive/heavy metal fan. Mainly what draws me to this music is the bass and percussion forward aspect. Joy Division has that great heavy droning base that I love and the percussion is tight and methodical.
The instrumentals being what drew me in first, but after a short while I came to really appreciate the lyricism and tone of Ian Curtis. In my opinion he is one of the best examples of a singer not having to have some crazy spectacular range, but matching the overall atmosphere and tone of the band to a point that it’s magical.

You should definitely dig more into post punk. One of the best genres ever.

What other bands would you recommend?

Wire is excellent especially the first three albums. This Heat is excellent if you want the weirder more experimental stuff. The Cure is essential for everyone to listen to. If you like Joy Division, Pornagraphy is an album I'd highly reccomend, and ofcourse Disintegration is one of the greatest albums ever. Talking Heads obviously. Remain in light is a masterpiece.
Theres also The Fall, The Pop Group, and Public Image Ltd who are also great. Lots of great bands tbh hard to list them all.

Thank you, I have listened to The Cure a little but have never done a deep dive. I checked out like their top 10 songs after hearing some of my favorite artist mention them as an inspiration. Seems like they have a ton of influence like David Bowie does.

Never mind the hits. That may as well be another band. Faith might be a great place to start. Bleak. Pornography, also. If you want lushness and depth, Disintegration’s deeper cuts.

The cure are two bands essentially. One is catchy clever and danceable, the other is intense atmospheric and dark . The top ten on Spotify will lean heavily towards the first , the real joy division type stuff is more in the later , enjoy !
Oh and be sure to checkout the first two new order LPs and singles as they formed after the singers untimely death4

I have listened to Ceremony and In a Lonely Place. Such a shame we will never have a good quality audio of Ian singing Ceremony

I’m also mostly a metal/rivethead but have always loved Joy Division and would suggest you may like the album “Entertainment!” by Gang of Four

That Manchester tie will seldom lead you astray. So much to discover there.

The Sound — From The Lion’s Mouth. (This album is perfection.)
Magazine — Rays & Hail. (It’s a compilation, and is the best intro to this band.)

Safe to assume Jane’s Addiction isn’t news to you? Since you mention bass…

I’ve listened to some Jane’s Addiction but I’m not the biggest fan. I think it’s a combination of the vocals not being my style and a lot of the songs not being tuned down enough for me.
My main three bands that I listen to regularly are Tool, Primus, and A Perfect Circle. Some others are early Soundgarden, Gojira, Type O Negative, Opeth

A prog metal fan discovering Joy Division is a man realizing you can convey despair in four minutes without a keyboard solo about ancient Egypt.
