News Subreddit changes and new moderation

Hi, I have recently become an additional mod for this subreddit. Firstly thanks u/scislac for approving me.

I've made a few small changes to start off with that I think are small enough to not cause any trouble/warrant community approval, though if there are comments about this please reach out.

  • Images embedded into comments now enabled: Now you don't have to link externally to attach images. Hopefully this should make it much easier to solve help requests with visual info.
  • Post flairs now enabled: For a while the pinned post from 10 years ago said to prefix help posts with [HELP]. A lot of the responses to this said that post flairs should be used instead, which I agree with. This has been superceded with post flairs which for now are mandatory (I think this isn't too intrusive but will consider any feedback). I've added a few categories, such as:
    • Help - for all help requests
    • Solved - for when a suitable solution has been found for a help request. Generally you wouldn't make a new post with this flair, but for changing a Help-flaired post afterwards when the OP no longer requires help.
    • Showcase - For showcasing your finished work
    • Tips & Tricks - Sharing knowledge and tutorials
    • Meta - For community suggestions and stuff related to the subreddit; comments about the software; memes; catch-all for things that don't fit in the other categories
    • News - Interesting news about inkscape; version releases, etc.
  • Update to rule 4: I have included AI-generated responses as examples of possible low effort comments. They aren't specifically disallowed, but now it is the commenter's responsibility to ensure the accuracy and relevancy of the information. The response must directly address the help request, and must not contain incorrect or "hallucinated" information.
  • u/litelinux and u/Xrott have also become moderators.

Please let me know if there are any issues regarding these changes or if you want anything else changed. I'll also consider revamping the look, for example adding a banner image. There will soon also be some optional user flairs available.

Showcase Geothermal Module for Watts Ahead - Puzzle Management Game

Post image
25 Upvotes

This the Geothermal Module or also called Geo Module.

This can be deployed on specific tiles that have an access to the deep ground so we can use geothermal energy to produce electricity.

This is one of the four modules used in my 2D isometric turn-based puzzle management game called Watts Ahead.

Help inkscape plugin for draftsight?

I have to use draftsight for work, but it sucks. Draftsight does handle svg imports, but its not a full implementation of the svg format, it can only really handle paths. I havent worked out exactly what svg elements it can, or can not process.

Anyhow, Im looking for an inkscape plug-in to convert inkscape drawings to svgs that draftsight can handle. if such a think exists, I really want to know about it.

Help Sometimes nodes can't be moved

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Sometimes when I’m tracing an object with the Pen Tool, this happens. All the other nodes work fine, but I can’t edit this part. None of the tools seem to do anything.

Why does this happen, and how do I fix it?

Solved What is the difference between ID, Label, and Title, & why do none of them affect the name of the shape in Layers and Objects?

Thumbnail

Google's AI did answer this, but it also implied that changing the label would also change the name of it under Layers and Objects. And as you can see: changing the label does nothing to change how it is named under layers and objects. So I'll consider it's information dubious.

I'm at the stage where actually naming everything would be useful, so knowing what the difference is actually are would come in handy. I did notice that changing the name of the object in layers and objects does change the label, but why would vice versa not apply?

When I tried looking up tutorials I only got things for making labels, but nothing about the differences between these three things.

Thank you in advance!

Solved How to create a graph in Inkscape?

I'd like to create a graph (nodes and lines) in Inkscape. But there's no way to add a line between two existing nodes as far as I know. And if I try to draw two lines with the bezier tool that end on the same points, then use the node tool to drag a selection box around the overlapping node and select "Join selected nodes" from the toolbar, the two nodes still remain separate. So if I move one node, the other line doesn't move with it. How can I achieve a connected graph with no duplicate nodes please?

Help What does converting from RGB to CMYK mean in practice? (For printing)

With my SVG open and a colour displayed with RGB I can just press a button in the Fill and it shows me the same colour but with different numbers for CMYK.

For example the orange of this sub is RGB: 255 / 135 / 23 so if I create a rectangle in Inkscape and make it that orange I can then click the option changer which tells me that in CMYK it's 0 / 47 / 91 / 0. I've not meaningfully converted anything or changed anything as it's very togglable.

Screenshot of two identical orange rectangles labelled RGB and CMYK. Below each is the numbers relating to the colour palette. The RGB one is described as 255 Red, 135 Green and 23 Blue. The CMYK one is described as 0 for both Cyan and Black and 47 for Magenta and 91 for Yellow.

If I want to export my orange rectangle either as a PNG or PDF and send to a printer who wants CMYK only, do I need to do anything special to it before exporting? Printers' websites talk about converting colours to CMYK which suggests a degree of effort beyond pressing a button. Or can just write down the numbers and send those?

Thanks!
Jo

Showcase Hydro Deployable Module in Inkscape with very simple shapes

Post image
24 Upvotes

Now comes the time of the hydro module I created using Inkscape. I took inspitation from lot of Pinterest images.

This represetns a hydro module that you can deploy and produce clean energy using the tides and the watter currents.

It's part of my latest game, a 2D turn-based puzzle management game called Watts Ahead, where you have to use those clean energy modules to power human settlements on a distant planet.

Help why can't i export the sky object with everything else

first time using Inkscape, but one object is not exporting, it's just a square object with gradients named sky

also few things i've tried:

removing the gradient of the sky, which then somehow it lets me export the sky,

different scale, did nothing,

exporting the entire document, the sky still didn't show up

moving all the objects to a new file, didn't really work as well

though i really need the gradient!

Help Trying to create a cross hatch for a pen plotter.

Post image
5 Upvotes

I'm trying to create a cross hatch "filter"(?) for pen plotting. Because this is for a pen plotter, it is important that the resulting hatching is comprised of strokes and not paths or at least has an easy enough means to convert to strokes.

My first instinct was to create a grid of my desired hatching that covers the whole canvas and then use path > intersection to mask the hatching to a vector I wanted hatching within. For some reason, this didn't work as I expected. I assume it's because I was trying to use a path operation on a stroke, but the outcome was always that both my hatching and path disappeared from the object list without a trace. After some experimenting, I found that path > cut path worked mostly? It just meant an exorbatant amount of manual work manually going in and deleting sections of the strokes that had been "cut up". Frankly, way too much manual work. Push come to shove it would work eventually, but I'm sure there's another way. Pictured is my attempt using "pattern fill" but I can't find an obvious way to make that fill into strokes or even paths for that matter.

I did come across an extension called "hatch fill" which by its description sounds like it would do just what I want but when I enable it it returns a script error and then doesn't actually show up in the menu.

I'm using inkscape 1.4.4 on fedora linux 44.

Any advice is greatly appreciated, cheers in advance.

Help How to convert hand drawn diagram to a digital copy with ease

I have a logo designed on a paper which i want to convert in a digital format so that i can edit it.

AI tools are also welcome but the SVG generated using chatgpt, gemini (pro) and claude(pro) are very different from the image uploaded. I managed to get rid of the background using canva but want to make it available in a form where i can change color, handle different sections of it separately and also smoothen out the edge slightly.

For additional context, I am not from creative background but need to do it for a personal project.

Help Turning handwritten font into a monoline font?

Hey guys, I'm trying to make a come back into doing neon flex signs. The thing that I'm wondering is "how do I convert my handwritten font text into monoline?" And believe it or not I cannot find what I'm asking anywhere. The thing is that the logo I'm trying to engrave has strokes with variable width and I need to make it monoline to simulate a centerline path.

Is this doable with inkscape??

Help Old feature back, please

I forgot what it was actually called but you used to be able to resize content with added margin. Like say, you wanted a canvas 800px by 600px but you wanted to add 20px margin around the edge. You used to be able to do this. Now you can't. It sucks! Bring it back.

Help Is there a good way to make evenly spaced inset patterns without disortion around curves and corners?

Does anyone know a good way to make even spaced insets without distorted curves? Scaling a duplicate never lines up, and the pattern along path tool tends to distort around the curves and corners, even turning small curves into straight lines.
