Meta/sub related Images

You ever have that thing where you’re trying to explain something and it would just be so much easier if you could show a picture of it? Well that’s why images are back in the comments! There are still no images allowed in posts but you can put them in comments for on-topic illustrative purposes. If too many people are abusing it with pointless, off topic pictures like selfies and memes, it will get removed again. So y’all can reply to this post with all the nonsense images you want to get it out of your system, okay?

MEGATHREAD Trump Executive Order Discussion

This is the place to talk about anything related to Trump’s Executive Order regarding homelessness. Any posts outside of this thread will be removed. I know that this is stressful and there is a lot of fear and confusion about how this will be implemented and what it will actually mean. Because of that it is really important to keep this a fact based discussion. Posting unsubstantiated assumptions and speculative rumors is not helpful and only causes more confusion.

It’s fine to talk about your opinions and feelings, but they need to be clearly framed as opinions and feelings. Any misinformation or obvious outrage bait will be removed. It’s important to evaluate the trustworthiness of your sources. If it feels like an article is trying to make you feel scared or angry, it may not be the most reliable source.

Most importantly please be civil to each other. You can disagree with someone without resorting to personal attacks or name calling. You can hate someone’s opinion but still be respectful towards the person as a human being. Stay on topic and play nice everyone.

Just Venting can we just quit patting ourselves on the bqck ...

... it is astounding the amount of energy and ad space and website real estate and award dinners and honor given from the office of the mayor-  for all the hard work put into helping the homeless.

I think it's time that state and local governments get real and see that the unhoused is not pn;ly made up on the uneducated drug addicted and abused African American man that just doesn't want to not live on the street.   They put together programs and meetings and shelters and intake procedures to help the stereotype -  and then when he finally caves and moves into an  apartment that he really doesn't want because now he is terrified about how is he ever going to keep it - they run off and have QA prosecco brunch to honor all their hard work.

Meanwhile - educated white guy here that thought it would be smart move and go to work for FEMA managing disaster response across the country- because it's a government job and one that will always be in demand.   - until DOGE came along and ripped it all out from underneath me.   So I found myself in the market for a new job with about 450,000 other federal employees all trying to find something.   Anything - and land a customer service call center gig working remotely - three times, because each time they get cut short because of a merger.  or a tech issue that dramatically reroutes volume.   And each time I get laid off or taken off assignment - it's 9 to 12 months to find another one - usually for even less money.   So you blow through your savings...   and now you can't pay rent.   -  Unemployment isn't there, because you were not on assignment long enough to actually have the privilege of getting about half of what it takes to pay rent and bills.   Eviction is filed.  You seek assistance - only to be told that there are no longer any finds remaining to help.   You're humiliated - not one of life's finest moments being treated like half a person by a judge who can't see you as a person. but a deadbeat,   So you put what you can into storage and fill your 21 year old SUV with the rest -  and this is your new reality.   A mobile resident that you really can't park and get more than a few hours sleep before being told "  you can't just park and sleep here "

So. I did everything right.  I studied hard, went to college ( Univ of Texas) and earned a degree with honors.  I worked full time giving more to my job than it ever gave me, set aside a few months pay - and half way through life you live in an SUV at a truck stop outside of  the city.

So you know what I need?   I don't need a shelter with a treatment program - because while I may not have an addiction, I do have my 2 dogs...   the addiction is allowed in a shelter - my dogs are not.

I don;t need a coordinated intake procedure that can only be done in the phone place on one day of the week.   Because I can't bring my dogs.

I don;t need a caseworker assigned to me ( once the backlog is cleared -n about 6 months from now )

What I need is cash.   -

Cash would allow me to find a roof and pout it over my head., thus making me safe, and not having to stay up all night so I don;t get some cop waking me up telling me to move it along

Cash would allow me to put gas in my car.  As it stands now.  I spend about 5 hours a day hustling focus groups and surveys for a few dollars that goes directly into my tank so I can move when I get noticed.  ps, I have run out of gas in the middle of traffic 3 x this week.   Very safe,

If I had some cash,  I would have the time and bandwidth to look for a job 8 hours a day....   and then when I get that job, I have an address that I can give them to send my equipment , and go through training and actually work 40 hours a day.

I just need cash.  and I need it rather quickly -   considering how hard it is to get in touch with any organization that could help me - when I do, I am told that I need to " come in"   because assistance is only given with coordinated intake.  So I can get healthcare.  and dental, and discounts on dry cleaning and play stations.   I can get access to trade schools and classes starting for HVAC repair next week.

They will make sure that several different online banks will call me daily for a free debit card.

FUCK.   I don't need any of that.   I just need a few hundred that will get me a locked door and running water.  I get to keep my 2 best friends with me,  I can return to work and become a member of society again...  no longer the burden,

We have so much money in this country - and yet I can't get a small amount to return my life to normal.   and each day it slips further and further away.   I am applying for jobs  -but it will be madness if I get an offer... because I can't train for 2 weeks without an internet connection and a door.    .. and I can;t start in an office because whtf- leave the dogs in the car all day?

I have reached out .  and every help the homeless organization - if they even call me back.  tells me that there is nothing that can be done.   - looking at me like I( want the cash so I can go and buy every flavor of vape pin and a hooker.     They tell me to go to a church and ask.   I have no church affiliation - they tell me to call 211 ...  my child

Somethings gotta give   I am probably the easiest situation to quickly turn around -  i need the least resources - and probably the least expensive problem to solve.   ... but then where is the glory in passing out a check.,

It's this situation that makes me know that the government has failed.   It is a dizzying array of emotions that I am thrown in and out of by the hour of shame .  worthlessness   anger  helplessness   and heartbreak that I have made my 2 dogs have to endure this with me -  I  made  promise to care for them and keep the safe when i adopted them and I am failing them

... thanks for the rant.  I've got to get back to respond to my online surveys so that maybe by tomorrow morning - I can put 4$ in my gas tank and make it to the park to let my dogs have a break.

New to homelessness Living in a tent with my two dogs, I want to kill myself

I recently became homeless and am living in a tent with two dogs. It’s no way to live. I fear going anywhere because people have come up to my tent and left when they see me. I am barely eating because I am afraid to have to use the bathroom, and barely drinking because I am saving water for my dogs. This is miserable. I find myself contemplating suicide nonstop. All I want to do is die. How do I manage this misery without somehow losing my two dogs? I feel as though I am ready to call it quits. If I lose them, I will kill myself, and it seems there may be no other way forward.

Just Venting Finding a job with housing to escape homelessness is SO HARD

Well the fall season has started not too long ago and I can feel the temperature drops affecting my body. This absolutely sucks I hate this so much. It's so much harder to sleep outside because he gets so cold and when I wake up I'm all shaky and shivering. This blows. This absolutely blows.

What makes this even more unfortunate is that I've been applying to so many jobs the past few months. Like dozens and dozens and I feel like I'd be lucky if I even heard back from any of them, I'd rather be told that I didn't get the job than to just be left in the dark like I feel like I am for so many of these opportunities. It's not something that I just recently started doing, I've been doing this for months because I'm so tired of living like this but nothing has seemed to work out. I've had interviews and everything but I don't know I guess I'm just unemployable for whatever reason. Maybe it's because of my lack of variable work experience? Most of my experience is just working at the same retail store for 3 years, two of those three years be a cashier and the third year as a loss prevention associate. Maybe that's just not good enough for jobs around the country. Maybe my resume is just that unremarkable therefore marking me is that much of a failure in life.

That was getting colder out and it's only going to get even more cold as the season progresses, eventually getting into the winter season where it'll be absolute Frozen hell. At this point, I don't even care if I have to work for free as long as I can get a job that can provide me housing and lodging. And quickly too

I've been looking at CSX and thinking that maybe that would be my way out but I came to realize that you need a driver's license to do that and since I don't have a driver's license I get that rules that position out. I don't know, it's just frustrating. I would have thought that it would be at least a bit easier to apply nationally as opposed to locally but I guess not so who knows.

Maybe this is just the end and I have to come to terms with that.

Seasonal change is here

It’s getting to the low 40’s here at night. It was sunny and somewhat warm this week.

I’m staying well, hammock bikepacking and still able to water, feed and sleep, with fire. I’m even working.

But my friend, he does this thing where he doesn’t accept tools: I have other equipment I’ve used, like for instance: the trangia cook system or another sleeping pad, a wool blanket, a solar
Light, etc. I know how he’s doing, he’s not doing so well. I usually try to offer him some of the stuff I haven’t used, because those things are tools and they make living a lot easier. They’re simple to train with.

He still refuses things. He sometimes makes up emotional tangents that don’t quite make sense to me, either from my own ignorance or his particular train of emotional thought.

It’s damn cold at night, so he has a tent and some stuff but the biggest things to aid him would be what I offered him, a stove system and more blankets.

We have known each other for two years. We are decently friends.

It’s just so awful. I know what slowly starving people act like. Being able to feed and water yourself with fire is a huge improvement on living.

Why won’t he take the tools I’m offering to give him?

How was your first night on the street?

So, I’d like to know what you felt on the first night you slept on the street.

What goes through your minds? Childhood, adolescence, a sad youth—what is it?

Is there any resources for a homeless 20 year old who still wants to go to college…?

I became homeless at the very beginning of January,2026. Family has always been…unreliable and trauma inducing,so they eventually disowned me a couple months after I turned 19. I’m in Nh,and when I lived with my parents it was in the boonies( Wakefield, ossipee, effingham area) unfortunately I never learned how to drive, and I had to quit working at my part time job because it wasn’t safe to stay in that area. I’ve gotten to and from places from random people, old friends, etc. but I finally got into a youth “transitional living program”in Manchester Nh…but it’s a very temporary program. My main goal is to leave NH and go to school for Photography. I quit literally don’t care what state,as long as I can go to school, have some sort of food pantries nearby, and hopefully have some sort of shelter situation.I’m in the process for applying for disability because I quickly found out how horrific working at the mall after not working for 9 months with little to no socialization for that entire time has instantly made it impossible for me to work a “normal” job. I’m on Reddit asking if anyone knows resources to help me get into a college where i won’t die with horrible debt, and any information someone might know that could help with that or just noteworthy things to help in general.

Need Advice I need help with a plan.

I'm a 34 yr old male, no kids, who recently got out of jail on felony probation ( non violent felonies). Relocating isn't an option, and I'm not sure if I'd be able to get an apartment due to being a felon and unemployed. For the time being I can crash on a friends couch (becoming a permanent roommate isn't a viable option), but im not sure how long that will last for. I'm unemployed obviously, and have no vehicle.. On the positive side of things, I have a working cellphone and some money saved up to work with. Also I forgot to mention that my credit is horrible so I'm sure that will affect some of my opportunities. Any advice?

Need Advice Is it worth it?

I’m planning on leaving home in a day or two. I live with my parents, but recently they’ve just been treating me terribly. They got me a car and everything, but took it away the moment I attempted to end myself. A bit of backstory, I have mental health issues because of childhood trauma caused by my father. Anyway, the moment I came back from the hospital, they took away my car and even my debit cards. Their solution was that I go to church every weekend even tho I told them that’s not something I believe in. Anyway, I went for their sake, but afterwards my mom wanted to go to the store and I asked her to drop me home and she said “so ungrateful. One rotten potato makes all the potatoes rotten. That’s what you are. A rotten potato. So fucking useless..etc” I’m planning on calling a homeless shelter to see if there’s space and then finding a job. I’d be leaving my university behind, but I guess that’s something I can do later. It’s not like I’ll do well living in this environment anyway. Am I overreacting or is leaving valid? I don’t know what to do cause the longer I stay here, the more I feel like hurting myself again. I’m trying not to.

Has anyone actually got arrested—almost arrested for sleeping in public when you have no car and shelters full? how was your encounter with cops? (For reference I’m in North Carolina where it is an arrestable offense) now I’m worried.

Need Advice Need Help on my Final Year Project on Homelessness!!

Hi everyone, I'm currently studying Product Design and for my final year project I haven chosen the topic of homelessness to focus on. Currently I am researching the topic of the transition between temp housing/homelessness to permanent housing.

I'm struggling to get in contact with any social workers or service providers for my primary research on this project. I've decided to have a go at posting this on Reddit to see if I can get any information from here. I'm looking for people to give me some insights, have contacts I can use or just general back and forth conversations to have regarding this topic.

Anyone can answer of course but it would be really beneficial to speak with some people who have experienced this first hand (homelessness), know anyone who has experienced this, workers in this sector or just anyone else with useful information and insights.

Thank you and I hope I can get some help with my final year project!!
