General discussion Unpopular Opinion: Home Improvement doesn't have more staying power because the writing is kind of lazy
As someone who frequently goes back and watches old '90s sitcoms, it always amaze me that amongst all of the major hits from that era, Home Improvement never maintained the huge following or staying power of other multi-season chart toppers like Friends, Frasier, etc.
I think a big reason is because the writing, even from some of the earlier seasons, was pretty lazy. There were never any significant multi-episode story arcs, and even in some of the earlier seasons they jumped the shark. Like the time they shrunk themselves on live TV to 4" tall and went inside a car engine...lol, what?
I'm in season 5 right now, where Al markets his Tool Time game, and the whole premise is absurd. He would be sued by Binford 5 seconds after launching that first commercial for infringing on their intellectual copyright. There's no way in a million years that he would be able to market and personally sell a Tool Time game. Yet the whole episode fixates on the mechanics of his potential financial loss due to manufacturing defects.
It's a fun enough show to go back and watch for nostalgia purposes, but thinking through this lens, and comparing against features of other hit '90s series, it's a bummer that they didn't put in just a bit more effort.
