No Spoilers [NO SPOILERS] What is your favorite battle in Game of Thrones?

Blackwater is and has always been my favorite. Of course the production quality and budget were not the same in the early seasons so the ‘battle’ isn’t as intense or grand as later seasons but Tyrion single handily holding off an army until troops arrived is great.

So many amazing moments in Blackwater.
“They want music? Let’s play. Drums.”
“Come with me and take this city.”
“Those are brave men out there. Let’s go kill them.”
“Fuck water; bring me wine”

The Battle of Castle Black. The Watchers on The Wall is an absolute masterpiece of an episode.

Jon's speech at hardhome is genuinely one of the best Speeches in Television and that episode is, for me, the best episode in the show

Blackwater >= Castle Black >>>>>> every other battle
Castle black might be the best battle, I like Blackwater more but mostly because of Tyrion's speech and the side plot with Cersei and Sansa. I also think Blackwater and Castle Black are both improvements on their book counterparts, though tbf none of the others on this list have happened really in the books (Meeren is happening in the Winds sample chapters, hardhome might be happening to Cotter Pyke)

While Battle of the Bastards is objectively the better battle, Castle Black is the one I look forward to the most on a rewatch.

Objectively?

People don't know how to use words good

u/Varanoids 2d ago
I remember when the word “literally” was used literally. Now it’s just a filler word

BOTB was nonsensical and has the same problem the other post S4 episodes/arcs/battles had - it broke from the logic of the world and turned it into an insulting spectacle.
We go from the early season’s “oh I never thought about how that might be an important factor” to “oh come, why would they do that?! that doesn’t make any sense!”
1
u/Zayasaurus_Sick 3d ago
I agree with all of that, but the one thing that it it does amazingly well is show the chaos of battle. So few movies/shows manage to pull that off so I'll always have a soft spot for it

Battle of the Golden road. I like the suspense feeling the a jet turbine sounding dragon just swoops down.

Battle of winterfell is epic with the most "fuck yeah!" moment. But battle of the bastards is pretty good too because it showed that Jon Snow was not infallible and was going to lose that battle because of he's emotions

u/zeauxzydeco 2d ago
Jon almost lost to the fooking legend of gin alley during the raid on crasters keep

Kings Port? You mean Kingslanding?
Goldenroad? Ist it called the "Loottrain attack"?

People aren’t baiting you when they state a different opinion. It’s immature to think otherwise.

I see you deleted your comment. Did you realize how hypocritical you were being?

what did you like about it?

u/North_Button_5257 4d ago
It was an epic battle that was a fitting end to the White Walker storyline. The spectacle was mesmerizing, the cinematography was beautiful, the deaths were emotional, and I was completely invested the entire hour and twenty minutes. The episode had me on the edge of my seat, especially the final ten minutes when the haunting music started to play. It was truly an unforgettable experience.

I was immediately taken out of it when I saw how they set up their cavalry and then had the Dothraki charge to their deaths in the dark.
Truly waterbrained episode that was a spectacle for the sake of spectacle. They stripped the show of the best part - the underlying brutal and unforgivable logic. It felt like an insult and I would have rather D&D just jingled keys in my face.

u/North_Button_5257 3d ago
The Dothraki are the best Calvary in the world. Them charging down the enemy is what they do best. That being said, the tactics used in the battle weren’t great, but the same can be said for the vast majority of battles depicted on the screen. These sorts of battles were always about spectacle.

No, it's beyond "not great." It's suicidal and moronic. Same with the artillery placement. It was beyond stupid and totally unfathomable in the first four seasons, back when the show was actually good.
In the early seasons of the series, the tactics used were actually pretty sound, and a lot of thought was given to them. I found myself saying, "Oh wow, I didn't think that would actually be as important as it is, but it makes sense," fairly often. After season 4, it was saying, "That's so stupid. Why would they do that?" More often than not.
The reason the show was good (includjnf the battles) wad not about "spectacle". Spectacle was always there, and it was always important, but the reason a show was good was because these tactics and strategy decisions actually mattered, and even if they were ultimately the wrong decisions, they were still somehow justifiable from the perspective of the person making them.
There is no world where it makes sense to send your cavalry in to die in the dark against an enemy that can turn a dead body into a troop. It just adds more enemies to fight and demoralizes anyone who visibly sees a large part of their force get killed and turned into another thing that they have to battle. Subjecting the viewer, who is invested in the show and accustomed to some form of internal logic within this show, to that sort of BS is insulting.
Also, regarding your half-assed analysis of how cavalry are best deployed: it took me 30 seconds to realize that if they would have waited until the melee was engaged and then sent the cavalry around the side, they would have been 10,000 times more useful.

I think the Battle of Bastards is filmed beautifully and maybe the last good ep in the show.

Hardhome, toda a construção em volta da chegada dos vagantes brancos é incrível, é um episódio que me marcou muito.

Battle of the Blackwater. no contest
it has the most narrative weight.
normies will say Battle of the bastards or Hardhome and i personally hate both battles. Jon Snows plot armor is so thick in both of those. he should die like 20 times in Batards and probably 5-10 times in Hardhome. Just because theres way more camera cuts and more people swinging their arms around doesn't make it a better battle.

Blackwater and watchers on the wall.
Gold road was 3rd.
What's the battle of kings port?
An incorrect translation?

The Battle of Blackwater still gets like a little kid. Nothing gets me like that wildfire explosion. I could watch it a million times and not be over it.
Side note; Battle of the Bastards is tough to watch because I can LITERALLY FEEL the suffocation!!

Castle Black for story
Hardhome for suddenness
Battle of The Bastards for spectacle
Blackwater for how good it was for a first major battle on screen

u/Timely-Violinist-89 14h ago
Battle of the bastards in pure eye candy, its story isn't really done well. Blackwater is beautiful to look at (at least for a battle lol) and the story behind it is also magnificent.

The Battle of Winterfell was an incredible episode, and people don’t want to acknowledge it because of the problems with the last couple episode.
2
u/pebis_man_ 3d ago
what? why? everything about it sucked so much i couldn't take it seriously. the defenders have a totally moronic "battle plan", every single character gets saved by plot armor several times, the lighting is awful, nothing makes sense and it ends in a really stupid way. genuinely what did you enjoy about it?

u/Beautiful_Quit8141 3d ago
I thought it was me, I kept trying to turn my tablet lighting up like, "wtf u can't see shit"... So INCREDIBLY disappointing...

Hahahaha if you are an owl and can see shit in the dark. Otherwise for humans a true piece of shit. For one thing you can not see things and the things you can see turn out to be utter garbage

I enjoyed the entertainment but story wise, all characters except 2 surviving is just bullshit, I would have loved it if half of them died. It's an impossible situation, there's a few batshit stupid decisions like sending the dothraki rushing head first as a frontline and putting all the women and children in the crypt with all the dead people... Half of the main cast should have died... That being said, Battle of the Bastards also has it's problems but I just like it more
