Help Digital controller for Gamecube to use with GB player attachment

I want to start utilizing my GB player on my GC more, but the original dpad on the GC controller isn’t great to say the least. I have a GBA sp and link cable I can use, but I don’t find that comfortable for longer sessions.

I’ve seen knockoff digital controllers on Walmart/Target for like $20 that are exactly what I’m looking for, but they have no reviews 😅 I haven’t found anything like what I’m looking for from other companies like Hori.

Was considering an SNES to GC adapter too, but same thing I’m not sure of quality and input lag.

I’ve wasted money on enough gaming junk at this point, so trying not to waste more on low quality crap…

Any thoughts? Thank you!!! :)

The 8bitdo wireless adapter paired with one of their controllers.

If you put the beta firmware on the dongle you can also use the NSO GameCube controller. That's really nice for GameCube games.

if you want something higher end look up the Gamecube Ultimate from HHL. It's very pricy and the 1st edition is a kit you have to assemble yourself, but it's a modern controller too. USB-c to Gamecube conversion cable sold separately

The Old Skool controller isn't bad - but the diagonals aren't the best. Howsver, swapping the membrane with one from a SNES controller largely fixes that issue.

It may be they've upgraded their materials in the past couple of years, but that is the "standard fix" for that issue.

The Old Skool membrane works just fine in a SNES controller.

There’s a couple of YouTube videos on the oldskool and cirka clones you can check out. But at that point for them being available at these big box stores you might as well just try it and return it if you don’t like it. I have the oldskool one and I like it. Following one of the YouTube videos I changed out the triggers and d-pad from an OEM SNES controller. It feels much better.

Retrobit Legacy GC isnt terrible, neither perfect. All of these "hori clones" have the same issue, too stiff membranes and inaccurate d-pad diagonals. Supposedly the d-pad can be swapped out with an OEM SNES one for little bit better accuracy. Generally wired controllers have low latency, so I wouldnt worry about that.

You could also just get an 8bitdo BT dongle, and a 8bitdo controller. Sure, BT is going to create some latency. But not any more than what modern consoles have.

I use Cirka's controller for my 16-Player Faceball setup, They're perfectly functional and definitely better priced than some of the alternatives. Not top of the line, if you're good with spending money, but, if you want to save a few bucks...

Mainly use them at Midwest Gaming Classic and have lots of people ask about them because they like them when using them.

I use a game cube to nes adapter with a nes fishbone. Works great for me.
